From the COO On December 13, Pragmatics’ management team and key staff members from across the company gathered at Reston headquarters for our annual management meeting (for more on the meeting, see Page 4). Managers from the National Capital Region, California, Florida, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania got together to collaborate and discuss last year’s achievements and our plans for next year. We covered a lot of material during the full day of events, but it was well worth the time and effort. We have the best management team in the industry, as demonstrated by high customer satisfaction. By bringing the team together to discuss important topics affecting our company and industry, we strengthen their ability to lead, work with other managers, and leverage company resources. That’s what we mean by empowered leadership!

Highlights of the all-day event included:

• Six PMs presented project cameos that demonstrate how our capabilities and management team are constantly evolving to deliver innovative solutions for our customers’ most difficult challenges.

• Attendees completed four workshops that covered human resources, our customer satisfaction program, proposal writing, and generations in the workplace.

• In keeping with our long history of giving back to the community, teams assembled 10 Radio Flyer wagons as part of a teambuilding event. Those wagons were donated to children in need through a local charity.

It was exciting to see the energy and collaborative spirit displayed throughout the day. We have an excellent team, and I am confident of their ability to execute their areas of responsibility. As managers, we work to provide an environment where our employees can be successful and where they can work to make our customers successful.

I look forward to 2014 and the challenges and opportunities it holds for Pragmatics. As I often say, I believe in open, honest, and thoughtful communication on every level. I want each of you to know that I value your input and ideas every day.

Pragmatics announced on December 23 that it was awarded two task orders by the U.S. Army. The awards were made under the Information Technology Enterprise Solutions-2 Services (ITES-2S) contract for the Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) Enterprise Classroom Program.

Pragmatics was selected to continue to provide world-class audiovisual and distance learning services at more than 750 classrooms at Army installations nationwide. These facilities are used to train approximately 400,000 soldiers each year. Since 2011, Pragmatics has modernized over 1,300 classrooms, introducing digital design and infrastructure that will provide the best technology platform to meet the U.S. Army’s TRADOC 2015 classroom vision.

Pragmatics COO Joe Brock noted, “I am pleased that the Army has selected Pragmatics to continue to support their critical training mission using our state-of-the art solutions. Our service members deserve the most effective and integrated training capabilities as they carry out their duties for our nation.”

Pragmatics Awarded Contract To Support U.S. Army

► Washington Technology recently noted the U.S. Army’s award of two task orders to Pragmatics. For more information, see the article above.

► On November 7, CBDO Dr. Kim Nguyen was quoted in the Asian Fortune article, “AAPI Small Businesses Profit from Dept. of Defense Measures.” The article discussed how the DoD has recently created more opportunities for Asian Americans’ and Pacific Islanders’ (AAPIs’) small businesses.

Dr. Nguyen commended the DoD’s measures, saying, “As a former small business (Asian-American owned), and as a federal contractor, we are encouraged by DoD’s efforts to provide increased access to, and participation in, federal programs

where AAPI small businesses need support and increased awareness. Improving the ability of these small businesses to build and sustain alliances and partnerships and promote workforce diversity will give them new direction and enhanced visibility.”

► On October 29, Business Wire mentioned Kimberly Gianni as a member of the ACT-IAC 2013 Partners Program Graduating Class of Future Government and Industry Leaders. The program provides government and industry participants the opportunity to establish working relationships while gaining real-world leadership training over a nine-month period. Pragmatics Exhibits at ATCA 58th Annual Conference & Exposition

The Air Traffic Control Association (ATCA) held its annual conference at the Gaylord National Resort and Conference Center from October 21 - 23. The conference is the largest of its kind in the Americas, attracting 3,000 conference attendees from more than 40 countries. ATCA is the premier forum for aviation professionals, and the conference is attended by key corporate and government decision-makers from around the world. The conference includes extensive panel discussions, breakout sessions, and keynote speakers.

Many Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) customers are familiar with Pragmatics’ wholly-owned subsidiary, Innovative Solutions International (ISI), and this conference and exposition provided a platform for the FAA and potential partners to associate Pragmatics with ISI.

Pragmatics was well represented at the conference. ISI Vice President and Transportation Group Manager Dieter Guenter, Senior Capture Manager Jim Leary, Vice President and General Manager of the Pragmatics Federal Civilian Agencies Division Chris Hegedus, and Chief Operating Officer Joe Brock were among the attendees. Pragmatics met with potential and current partners and FAA customers during the event.

The conference was a great success for Pragmatics; we took many steps toward our goal of promoting Pragmatics/ISI familiarity among industry vendors and FAA customers.

Pragmatics employees celebrated the holiday season and 2013 at the annual gala at the Waterford at Springfield, Va., on December 14. More than 400 employees and guests enjoyed an evening of great food, live music, dancing, and awards presentations.

CEO Dr. Long Nguyen kicked off the event by thanking employees for their hard work and dedication throughout the year. Training Manager John O’Keeffe and AFSO Brian Brognano were the evening’s Masters of Ceremonies.

The presentation of Service Awards and Chairman’s Awards was one of the highlights of the evening: 46 employees received awards for 5, 10, and 15 years of service; eight employees received Chairman’s Awards for Community Service, Infrastructure Support, Project Management, Project Support, Senior Technical Leadership, and Technical Support.

Partygoers enjoyed beverages and hors d’oeuvres, followed by dinner and dancing to The Great Expectations Band. Employees won door prizes throughout the evening. The lucky winner of the grand prize, an iPad Air, was Bruce Pearce, Program Manager at FDIC.

Thanks to everyone who helped to make the evening a great success, and special thanks to CEO Dr. Long Nguyen, who made this wonderful event possible.

Other Pragmatics locations across the country also held holiday celebrations, including Oklahoma City, Okla.; Trevose, Pa.; and Tampa, Fla.

In March 2013, Mike Sousa was appointed Chairman of the Technology Advisory Board for the Federal Government Distance Learning Association (FGDLA). FGDLA is a nonprofit professional association formed to promote the development and application of distance learning in the federal government. The association actively fosters collaboration and understanding among those involved in leveraging technology and instructional media in supporting the government’s education and training needs. FGDLA focuses on supporting government agencies involved in distance learning and encourages applying all forms of distance learning media and embracing innovative methods in integrating instructional technologies to meet training and education needs.

Sousa, Program Manager for the Army Enterprise Classroom Program, applies his 20 years of experience in consulting with customers in training, education, and conferencing technology. He leads a group of training technologies professionals in creating case studies, noting market trends, and compiling lessons learned for FGDLA members. This enables government members to increase their knowledge about what others are doing and to track industry trends. One example is the “bring your own device” initiatives the federal government is working toward.

The Army Enterprise Classroom Program won the FGDLA Five Star Award in August 2013 for its leadership and best practices in developing and applying proven distance learning technologies

supporting the government.

Sousa was a featured speaker on the FGDLA annual membership call, where he presented “Mobility Trends” and discussed the Army’s Limited User Test (LUT) Pilot Program. The FGDLA Technology Advisory Board will complete two to three case studies per quarter and have one quarterly Web conference.

Sousa’s leadership in this group further positions Pragmatics as an innovator in audiovisual and learning technologies.

Pragmatics honored its veterans at the first annual Veterans Day Breakfast at Reston headquarters on November 8. COO Joe Brock, Vice President of Human Resources Kerri Morehart, and CBDO Dr. Kim Nguyen welcomed employees and spoke about the importance and significance of Veterans Day.

Senior Vice President and General Manager Mike Yocom, a retired army officer and distinguished Vietnam veteran, also talked about the need to honor those who selflessly answered our nation’s call. Yocom thanked Pragmatics for recognizing employees who have given so much to our country.

Veterans Day began after World War I. It was originally called Armistice Day, because all fighting stopped on November 11, 1918, even though the treaty was not signed until June 4, 1919. Several decades later, in June 1954, Congress decided to change the name to Veterans Day. This Congressional act made November 11 the day we honor all American veterans from all wars.

Pragmatics is proud of our veterans and all those who continue to serve; we owe them a great debt of gratitude.

Pragmatics congratulates Kimberly Gianni, Independent Verification & Validation (IV&V) Subject Matter Expert (SME) and Technology Solutions Group (TSG) member, on her graduation from the 2013 ACT-IAC Partners Program. ACT-IAC is a public-private partnership dedicated to advancing the business of government through the application of technology. The organization provides a forum for collaboration between government and industry to create solutions for government information technology (IT) challenges. Pragmatics has been an active member of ACT-IAC for several years.

The Partners Program is ACT-IAC’s flagship executive development program for leaders in government and the IT industry. The program’s goal is to prepare future government and industry IT leaders for senior executive roles. Gianni graduated from the program in October at the Executive Leadership Conference in Williamsburg, Va.

Government participants are paired with industry counterparts. Participants then form “Pods” to attend and produce programs throughout the year. Gianni’s pod organized a breakfast event for all 40 program participants. The

event explored the government’s challenges in using mobile applications (tools, security, data, and “bring your own device”). The program was well received and provided an excellent forum to collaborate and share lessons learned with a panel of mobility experts. Overall, the Partners Program is a dynamic learning experience that delivers networking benefits and a forum to meet members across multiple government agencies and industry domains.

Gianni has been active for several years as a volunteer for the ACT-IAC Emerging Technologies (ET) Shared Interest Group (SIG), first as Communications Co-Chair, and currently as Program Chair. The ET SIG evaluates and reacts to game-changing events; shares lessons learned in the federal space; forms committees around, and provides insight on, high-potential technologies to accelerate awareness and adoption; and actively monitors the emerging technology landscape. Multiple programs are conducted during the year, exploring various technologies such as agile development and big data/analytics.

Pragmatics is dedicated to continuous training and advancement and has sponsored many employees through this program. For more information about ACT-IAC SIGs or the Partners Program, contact Kimberly Gianni at [email protected]; or Pragmatics COO Joe Brock, a 2006 graduate of the Partners Program, at [email protected].

Knowledge is power. Knowledge and information are some of the world’s most sought-after assets. Electronic communications, the Internet, and social media have made massive amounts of information available from a seemingly infinite number of sources.

So how does everyone seem to know everything, even things they shouldn’t? The evolution and abundance of phishing, malware, and cybercrime have made their way to the forefront in recent years.

Pragmatics is part of an ever-expanding group of contractors supporting our federal government. Foreign hostile intelligence

organizations, using phishing and malware, mainly target unclassified industry information, because it is less protected than classified information. Unclassified information is generally left to the owning organization to protect under its own rules and procedures rather than through steadfast federal protection requirements, usually making it easier to access. With enough unclassified information, someone can attempt to piece together more sensitive (sometimes classified) information. The average cost per cybercrime victim in the consumer space is $300. The amount would be significantly more if a company or the federal government was affected. There are new versions of malware and viruses that encrypt your files and hold them hostage on your own computer.

There are a few easy ways to combat phishing and malware. The first is simple and straightforward: do not open any unsolicited e-mails from those you don’t know. Another way to protect yourself from the inadvertent

installation of malware is to disable the reading pane on your e-mail. The reading pane automatically opens all incoming e-mails when they are selected. Some classes of malware only require opening the message body to initiate the embedded code. Also, do not click any links or open any attachments associated with these e-mails.

Scams take many forms, with many easily mistaken for common e-mails such as social media invites, phone and credit card bills, and health insurance correspondence. Keep an eye on the origin of the domain name, and look for subtleties in the titles: misspelled words or “close-but-not-quite” idiomatic phrases.

Since phishing and malware are constantly being changed and modernized, it never hurts to be proactive. Whether you catch something before or after you open it, let the Pragmatics Security Office know immediately. Send a separate e-mail to [email protected]. Do not forward the original e-mail. Include the subject of the suspicious e-mail, note whether or not you opened it, and provide any other information that might be important. The Security Office will then give you instructions on how to proceed.

Awareness is the greatest defense to cyber threats. Your assistance protects not only Pragmatics’ information, but also our federal customers’ information.

If you have any questions, please contact the Pragmatics Security Office at [email protected].

#TrendingTopics – How to Use Trending Topics and Hashtags to your AdvantageBy now, most people have heard the term “hashtag,” but not everyone on social media has used one. A hashtag is a word, saying, or phrase beginning with the symbol “#.” Hashtags help to group messages so a user can search for a hashtag and find messages that contain it. The popularity of the hashtag started on Twitter, but it has since expanded to other sites such as Facebook and Instagram.

How can we use hashtags to our advantage from a business standpoint? We can use them to communicate and network with others. For example, in October, Pragmatics attended the 58th Annual Air Traffic Control Association (ATCA) Conference and Exposition (see Page 5) and posted about it on our social media pages. If you saw some of these posts, you might have noticed the #ATCA58 (the event’s hashtag) at the end of each post. The hashtag showed up as a hyperlink, and when people clicked on it, everyone who posted a message or photo with the event’s hashtag showed up.

If you were going to attend the event, you could have looked up and used its hashtag to see what companies and people were saying about the event. Even if you weren’t able to attend, you could get updates.

What if you’re not attending an event? How can you network using hashtags? You can look for local trending topics relevant to your job. For example, during the government shutdown, #shutdown, #governmentshutdown, and #govtshutdown were trending. If you searched for these hashtags on Facebook or Twitter, you could see what people were saying about the shutdown. This could help you find people and companies relevant to our business.

How can you tell what’s trending and what’s not? There is a trending box on Twitter that can be customized to the country and city you are interested in seeing, one major city at a time (e.g., Washington, D.C.; Baltimore, Md.; or Richmond, Va.). To get an idea of what’s trending in the D.C. area, use the Trendsmap. This map shows what is trending on Twitter in real time for the entire United States. You can zoom in to see what is specifically trending in the metro area (http://trendsmap.com/).

If there is nothing relevant to you currently trending, but you are still interested in networking, Twitter has the #Discover button. This option shows live tweets tailored to your profile. Tweets from people with profiles that have common interests, related posts, or that are similar to profiles you’re already following will appear on your screen.

Once you discover a profile you’re interested in, you can follow that person to get their updates. You can also start a dialog with them by sending them a message, commenting on their post, or responding to it. Social media can help you discover companies and people you wouldn’t ordinarily find otherwise.

So start networking using social media! And don’t forget to follow Pragmatics, Inc. on Twitter and LinkedIn and “like” us on Facebook.

The weekend of November 1, Denise Ennis from Pragmatics’ Tampa office, and her husband, Brian, participated in a three-day bike ride to benefit the Tiny Hands Foundation. Thirty people participated in the 280-mile journey.

The Tiny Hands Foundation helps to improve the quality of impoverished children’s lives in Sarasota, Fla. Congratulations to Denise and Brian for their dedication to this worthwhile cause.

Pragmatics Participates in Angel Tree ProgramFor a sixth year, Pragmatics partnered with the Salvation Army to participate in the Angel Tree Program. The program focuses on providing children in need with gifts of clothing and toys for the holiday season.

This year, Pragmatics has helped spread joy to 100 children up to 12 years of age in the Washington, D.C. community. Thanks to everyone who participated for their great generosity!

On November 8, the Philippines were hit by a devastating typhoon. Typhoon Haiyan was the most powerful storm on record to ever make landfall. More than 13 million people were affected; some were left without food, water, shelter, and medical supplies. An earthquake hit the area soon afterward.

To help those affected, PragmaticSERVES partnered with the Red Cross. Employee donations and CEO Dr. Long Nguyen’s generous corporate match raised $13,700. This will help provide families with drinking water, cooking sets, toiletries, water containers, blankets, and other much-needed necessities.

Pragmatics thanks everyone who contributed to this effort.

I’m Deke Moeller, a program manager (PM) on a contract for the Department of State. I’ve been with Pragmatics for more than nine years and have enjoyed my time on a variety of projects in many different roles. I guess I’d call myself a bit of a jack-of-all-trades.

Earlier in my Pragmatics career, I wrote requirements and was a requirements analyst for both the Library of Congress and the Department of Justice (DOJ). As a project manager, I was responsible for a requirements assessment/synthesis and subsequent procurement for another department within DOJ. I then changed hats to become a risk manager for a program at the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA). My next role was a systems

engineer for two other departments/programs at DISA, where I led the development of the system engineering process and documentation. In another PM role, I led software application development teams for a federal regulatory agency, generating dashboards and reports displaying pie charts, metrics, and trends.

In between these various projects, I’ve helped to write proposals, including transition plans, technical approaches, and corporate capabilities.

In each situation, I never felt fully prepared to step into my next role. However, I always received encouragement and support from management that enabled each transition to go smoothly.

I enjoy my current PM role and enjoy interacting with team members, customers, and the management and support team at corporate headquarters. I admire our values of openness, honesty, and integrity, and I do my best to live up to them.

New Employees

On October 21, Pragmatics hosted an ice cream social at Reston headquarters to celebrate the success of the Employee Referral Program.

Attendees enjoyed Baskin-Robbins ice cream as CEO Dr. Long Nguyen expressed his appreciation for everyone who participated in the referral program.

The winners for 2013 were:

• Ate Etim-Edet from the project control team in Reston, who won the fourth quarter award and received a Kindle Fire HDX.

• Frank Adams from the Iran Litigation project in Trevose, Pa., who won Third Prize and received a Kindle Fire HD.

• John Grenoble, from the Classroom XXI project in Reston, who won Second Prize and received an iPad mini.

• Alexander Jonathan Miller, from the SITEC project in Tampa, Fla., who won the Grand Prize and received an MS Notebook with keypad.

Pragmatics congratulates all of the winners! To refer someone and participate in the Employee Referral Program, please send your referrals to Virginia Alfaro at [email protected] or to [email protected].
