to grow and be the best provider of electronic security products and solutions worldwide.

This is certainly an exciting time for our business. Our brands continue to lead in product excellence, and we are fast becoming known as the force in the security industry.

As we begin the new fiscal year, it is not without challenge. We are still facing an uncertain economy and, just as Tyco takes measures to remain strong and competitive, we too, need to be vigilant about maintaining our focus and keeping our costs down.

Every month, I say the same thing because it bears repeating…all of you make the difference. Without your hard work, talented ideas, and unwavering commitment, our story would be different. ✦

as we approached the end of the year.

First, the announcement that Tyco is planning to separate into three publicly traded companies. As lead-ership transitions over to George Oliver, who will assume of the role of CEO of the commercial fire and security company, we expect the transition to be seamless and the process to be business as usual. George has a long history with our brands and has always been sup-portive of our strategies and tech-nologies. Naren Gursahaney, who has also been a strong advocate for the work that we do, will assume the CEO role of the new ADT North

America residential and small busi-ness security business.

Our senior leadership team will be working with George over the com-ing weeks and months to assess the needs of the new organization. At this time, no decisions have been made yet about the structures that will be required in the new com-pany. As always, we will be sure to share any decisions that are made through the Global calls, here in the Momentum, and through other means as needed. Additional infor-mation on the process is also avail-able on InsideTyco.

This news came on the heels of our equally exciting announcement re-garding our pending acquisition of Visonic, a world leader in wireless technology. Tyco Security Products is positioned now, more than ever,

American Dynamics and Q Video Systems Set Sail in Sydney Darling HarborOneTyco Event for Oil & Gas

Unique Installation at Hemlock Semi Conductor (division of Dow Chemical)

American Dynamics and Q-Vid-eo Systems used the “Q-Cruise” to launch their new partnership in Sydney’s Darling Harbor dur-ing the ASIAL 2011 Exhibition & Conference. The launch events, starting on August 24th, were a great success. Over a two day span, more than 400 in-vited guests took part in various 2-hour cruises around Sydney Harbor.

Tyco Security Products took this opportunity to announce that QVS has been chosen as the sole-distributor of American Dynamics video products to the Australian market. As the sole-distributor, QVS will provide pre-

On Sept 24-25, more than 500 people attended our OneTyco event in downtown Rio de Ja-neiro. Important customers in attendance included Petrobras, Transpetro, Bayer, IBM, IESA, Chemtech, Bureau Veritas, BNDES (National Development Bank), Brazilian Navy, plus our main integrators and partners.

The first day of the event was a huge success with executive speeches from George Oliver, Naren Gursahaney and Patrick Decker. Tyco’s commitment to Social Investment was high-lighted during the event with a speech from Karen Lassner from

sales support and after-sales ser-vice to all customers of American Dynamics. Those in attendance on the various cruises took advan-tage of the opportunity to meet Tyco and QVS management and support members, as well as to peruse the various solutions that were set up for viewing on the boat.

In addition to the activities on the boat, Q-Video had a booth in the ASIAL 2011 Exhibition Hall show-casing “victor”, the American Dy-namics unified-client and the new range of Illustra IP cameras, mar-keted as a “camera that provides higher resolution images without breaking the bank for storage.” ✦

the Brazil Foundation, who pre-sented Tyco’s partnership to Fun-do Carioca. The opening session was concluded with a presenta-tion from the Petrobras keynote speaker Claudio Roberto Lima do Rego, Procurement special-ist who presented an overview of the company’s business plan for 2012-2015.

Special thanks to the team of 40 people who worked for 48 hours to assemble a sophisticated 140m2 exhibit area with key products from TFC, TSS and TFP, all integrated to a Central Monitor-ing Station, presenting integrated solutions from all divisions. ✦

Tyco Security Products - Belfast Team Building Event

The CEM and American Dynamics team in Belfast recently enjoyed a great team building day & BBQ. The day comprised of a variety of fun activities, such as building catapults, bridges and the NASA space challenge. Congratulations to all who took part and, in particular, Team 4 for collecting the Winner’s Trophy and to Team 10 (you know who you are) for taking home the wooden spoon. All in all, it was a fantastic day of Team Building fun for all involved! ✦

We have implemented the ini-tial release of very unique set of Software House reports for HSC’s chemical / industrial site to locate personnel that have “Rallied” to-gether into a “Safe Zone”. Basi-cally, when the site declares an emergency, personnel who are possibly in the affected area are shown on the left side of the re-port; when personnel go to their safe station and swipe their card they are then displayed on the right side of the report to indicate that they have reported safely.

This installation was key to vari-ous important milestones. First

and foremost, this reporting/dis-play management system was key to the successful deployment of the C∙CURE product. With-out this solution, HSC would not have been able to open the plant for operation. This solution will expand as we work toward up-dating all of HSC/DOW chemical facilities worldwide over the next 12 to 18 months. This is another example of how our skills and the flexibility of the Software House Business Intelligence Reporting Suite (BIRS) allow us to meet the needs of our customers and pro-mote new opportunities. ✦

To tweet or not to tweetOne of the most common themes I hear when talking to someone who isn’t on Twitter is, “I don’t care what you ate for lunch…and no one needs to know what I am doing.” And to be honest, I don’t really care what you ate for lunch either (unless of course it was the most amaz-ing thing ever, in which case I just learned about something new to try.) However, Twitter has moved beyond senseless communication and celebrity hoopla and has become a relationship building tool that helps us learn, share, and network.

Why is Twitter relevant? It has 200 million registered users, 100 million of them are active every month and 50 million users are on the service every day. Twitter is 5 years old and the number of users logging in every month is up 82% since the begin-ning of this year alone. Twitter is here to stay and understanding how it can benefit us as a person as well as the business are keys for our growth.

Here are some ways twitter is relevant to you:• It’s a place to learn (‘Follow’ individuals and companies from the industries that interest you.)

• Engage with those people by publically asking questions or commenting about their posts or by sending direct messages (in private)

• Stay connected with friends and family (read what they’re up to, post interesting things you’re doing)

• Meet new people and build relationships that could strengthen your career or personal endeavors

• The most obvious business use of Twitter is to meet potential customers and leads the same way you would at a networking event or tradeshow

Here’s how Tyco Security Products benefits:• Promote content we’ve created, including webinars, blog posts, video, white papers, etc.

• Track what people are saying about our brands

• Monitoring what our competition is doing

• Build brand champions (they retweet useful Tyco content to their followers – which grows brand awareness)

• Cultivating a community (interacting with customers, employees, security professionals, and business partners)

• Keeping up to date with industry trends

• Create buzz around upcoming events

• Possibly improve customer service or tech support models

Who should tweet? Everyone! While those in sales are obvious beneficiaries, those throughout our organization benefit from how they cultivate their network and the information they receive. I encour-age everyone to at least create an account and follow the brand profiles.

So how do you get started?

Easy! You can watch my Twitter video series for detailed instructions and tips. But as an overview: sign up for a free account at twitter.com, completely fill out your profile information (including a photo), follow all of our brand accounts, then use the Twitter search field to find people related to a topic of interest and then “Follow” some of them. Start by ‘listening’ (reading posts) if a post is informative and something you feel others would find useful, then “retweet” (sharing that same post with those who follow you.) This is where employees can really make

a difference and help promote brand awareness – retweeting posts by brand accounts. Lastly, interact with others on Twitter to build beneficial relationships in your personal and professional lives.

While Twitter and other social networking tools create new opportunities for communication and collaboration, they involve certain responsibilities for Tyco employees, especially in profes-sional use. Please review the Tyco Social Media Guidelines. Tyco employees should approach online worlds by using sound judgment and by adhering to Tyco’s Guide to Ethical Conduct and other applicable policies including the company’s “Personal Data Protection & Privacy”, “Intellectual Property”, and “Insider Trading” policies. These and other policies can be found on PolicyIQ (must use Internet Explorer.)

If you would like to use your personal Twitter account to further promote brand awareness beyond the occasional retweet, please email me at [email protected]. ✦

Momentum: Being involved in the legal aspects of such a large corporation must be very challenging. What are some of the projects that you find most interesting here at Tyco?

JH: The biggest challenge of my job is also the most inter-esting: supporting every aspect of the global Security Products business, from engineering and product management, to our global sales team, across all of the brands. I love that I never work on the same thing twice. Whether it’s working with HR on a personnel matter or with our compliance department on international product regulatory issues, there always seems to be a new twist. Just when you think you’ve seen it all, some-thing crazy happens. For ex-ample, this past year, I worked around the clock to complete an agreement with a strategic partner, which we signed at 2 AM, while their products were already installed in our booth for a trade show that opened at 10 that same day. There is very little that happens around here that I could call routine. The projects I find most inter-esting and rewarding are those that have a real impact on the business – like the Visonic ac-quisition and the interactive monitoring project with intru-sion. It’s really in those deals

you see how all the hard work has a direct and impactful effect on business.

Momentum: What’s your back-ground? Where were you before Tyco?

JH: I’ve been an attorney since 1994. I started my corporate law career at Hale & Dorr, a law firm in Boston, MA (now Wilmer-Hale). I started with them about the time of the start of the dot com boom, and I was involved in about as broad a range of activities as a corporate lawyer can be, including IPOs, venture capital financings, mergers and acquisitions, securities law is-sues, commercial deals…you name it, I did it. I left the firm in 2000 and spent the next 7 years with Hewlett Packard/Compaq. I spent the first half of my career at HP/Compaq supporting what was left of Digital Equipment Corporation, including their Al-phaServer hardware business and Unix and VMS software units, doing a lot of the same type of work I do today here at Tyco. I left HP in late 1997 to pursue a role at a biotech start-up and ultimately joined Tyco in the spring of 2010.

Momentum: What are some of the challenges of being part of a shared service in such a large organization?JH: The biggest challenge for me is to effectively function within the matrix environment. Half the battle is knowing who the right people are to help you, and then building relationships with them. My experience at HP, where most of my colleagues were on the other side of the US in Silicon Valley or overseas, has come in very handy, as it has helped me to forge good working relationships with col-leagues around the world.

Momentum: How do you view your impact to the business?

JH: I’ve adopted the philosophy of the former General Counsel of Digital and Compaq, who firmly believed that the job of the in-house attorney was not to al-ways be the tough guy and say “no” to everything, but rather, to act as a business counselor to management and to find ways to help the business be success-ful. I think the value of my role is the ability to leverage my ex-periences to help Tyco Security Products find ways to achieve its goals while minimizing the risk to the business and our share-holders.

On a related front, one of the things I have always found most rewarding in my career is to be part of a team involved in some-thing with tangible results with real impact on the business –

something that I can show my kids so they can easily under-stand what their dad does when he goes to work. For example, I can point to the DSC panel in our back hall and tell my kids that their dad helped to make that. They get that, and I find it very rewarding.

Momentum: What is your ab-solute favorite thing to do out-side of work?

JH: I have a very active lifestyle. I am a self-proclaimed workout nut and I really enjoy doing phys-ical activities with my wife and three kids. We recently took a biking trip to Martha’s Vineyard, which is a beautiful island off the coast of Massachusetts. While we were there, we biked across the bridge that’s featured in the movie “Jaws” and all jumped off it into the ocean below. It was a really invigorating experience, although I don’t think I’ll be able to use the old line “If your friends jumped off a bridge, would you follow?” on my kids anymore. ✦
