Denver's Tattered Cover Bookstore Celebrates Three Locations at DIA

The Tattered Cover, Denver's premier literary emporium since 1971, now has three locations at DIA (one at each concourse).

Denver Mayor Michael B. Hancock, airport CEO Kim Day, Tattered Cover Bookstore owner Joyce Meskis, and several authors celebrated the Tattered Cover's arrival at DIA with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Concourse A location.

Denver Mayor Michael B. Hancock attended the opening of Tattered Cover bookstores at Denver International Airport on August 13.

"Know that we stand firmly committed to help our local brands get their opportunity to really soar and to expand their role across the world by being present here at DIA," Hancock said at the Aug. 13 ceremony.

also to look back at August 1910, we present the following postcards, which record the Aviation Meet at Interlaken Field, in Asbury Park, N.J., from Aug. 10 to Aug. 20, 1910.

Several flyers with the Wright Flying Exhibition Team participated, operating Wright aircraft. A Wright airplane with wheels instead of skids appeared publicly for the first time. The New York Times said, "Five of the best aviators developed under the personal instruction of Orville and Wilbur Wright will give daily exhibitions."

One of the pilots, Walter H. Brookins, was badly injured during the exhibition when a gust of wind caused his plane to dive back toward earth. The plane hit several onlookers, killing a boy. The meet continued the next day, and the Wright flyers accomplished many aerial feats, including flying at night (the first public

one of his books. Heller was at the airport to sign copies of his new novel and help celebrate the opening of Tattered Cover outlets at DIA.

The Tattered Cover has an exclusive license agreement to operate with Hudson Booksellers and its parent company, the Hudson Group, at the airport.

Meskis told the audience, "It's my pleasure to be with you to celebrate this day." She was joined by Denver author Peter Heller and by Joe DiDomizio, Hudson Group's chief executive officer. Meskis thanked her customers and the authors who visit for book signings, saying they are "so much a part of the presentation for the love of the book."

Joyce Meskis, Tattered Cover owner and president, celebrated the opening of three of her bookstores at DIA—one store for each of the airport's concourses. Meskis purchased the original Tattered Cover in 1971 at the Cherry Creek North shopping area. She and her company have become one of the largest independent book retailers in the United States.

DiDomizio said, "It's much more than a bookstore. It's a sanctuary." It's a place to share ideas with friends and find purpose and meaning with stories.

Earlier that morning, Heller, the best-selling author of The Dog Stars and several nonfiction books, including Kook, The Whale Warriors, and Hell or High Water: Surviving Tibet's Tsangpo River, arrived at the Tattered Cover's Concourse A location to sign his latest book: The Painter.

Throughout the day, other Colorado authors visited the DIA Tattered Cover Bookstores to sign their works and talk to their readers among the airport's passengers:

Ingrid Law - the author of the New York Times bestseller Scumble, companion to the Newbery Honor Book Savvy, which was selected for this year's One Book, One Denver.

Jessica Brody – whose books include teen fiction: Unremembered (the first book in a trilogy), 52 Reasons to Hate My Father, My Life Undecided, and The Karma Club, and women's fiction Love Under Cover and The Fidelity Files.

Sandra Dallas – a novelist, whose works include: Tallgrass, The Bride's House, Whiter than Snow, Prayers for Sale, and New Mercies.

Kevin J. Anderson – prolific writer of 125 published works, including 50 national bestsellers. He has more than 23 million books in print

Terminal East Departure Level Detour Set for This Weekend

The new elevated roadways on the east side of Jeppesen Terminal are nearly complete, but workers still need to place a strip of concrete to finish Level 6 (departures).

To allow the concrete to be placed and cured to the required level of strength, DIA will close Level 6, Terminal East, beginning at 10 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 22, 2014, and ending at 4 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 24.

Vehicles dropping off passengers for Air Tran, Alaska, Delta, Frontier, Great Lakes, jetBlue, Southwest, or Spirit flights will be rerouted to Terminal East Level 4—the passenger pickup level—until the concrete is set some 30 hours later, and Level 6 can be reopened.

Drivers to Terminal East will notice a single lane closure on Peña Boulevard, where it splits between the terminal's east and west sides, as traffic is routed to Level 4.

Denver International Airport's Terminal East passenger departure level will be closed for about 30 hours over the weekend of Aug. 22-24 while workers finish remaining concrete panels for the elevated roadway leading from this level to Peña Boulevard. Vehicles with air travelers who are departing on flights will detour to Level 4—Arrivals, also known as Passenger Pickup.

Delays are likely, so travelers should allow extra time to pick up or drop off passengers. Departing passengers should arrive two hours before their flight leaves.

It is imperative that vehicles more than eight feet high use Terminal West to drop off passengers. Vehicles of this height cannot use the detour route on Terminal East, Level 4, because there is not enough room between the top of the vehicle and the bottom of Level 5, directly above.

During the hours of the detour, there will be plenty of signs to help direct passengers to check-in locations, and additional staff will be available to assist travelers.

Once concrete is set on Level 6, the roadway will reopen and all three levels at

Terminal East will return to near normal operations.

DIA's New Gates at Concourse C Focus on the Customer Experience

A 39,000-square-foot extension at Concourse C's west end will have five new gates for Southwest Airlines and will provide an area that enhances the customer experience.

The new space, expected to be completed in November this year, is designed to be airy, light-filled, easy-to-navigate and will reinvent the way passengers use gate areas at DIA.

Developing the space is Paradies–Taste 5280, LLC, which was selected through a competitive bid process as the concessionaire to create a unique architectural and cultural experience at the new gates. Denver City Council's Business and Development Committee voted unanimously Aug. 7 to move the agreement for approval to Denver City Council and Mayor Michael B. Hancock.

The design mixes urban and natural architectural features, integrated with technology. Architectural references to Colorado's industrial history will be found in materials such as steel beams—strong unifying elements that are the main architectural features of all the storefronts and will be seen in custom pieces such as communal tables.

"Not only will the addition of these five gates help the Southwest passenger on Concourse C, but the integration of food and retail and the traditional hold rooms will greatly improve the options and ambience of waiting for a plane," said Denver International Airport CEO Kim Day.

This new space will feature iPads integrated in custom high-top tables, providing an opportunity to receive concierge service, order beverages, or simply check e-mail or flight status. Improved seating will offer electrical outlets, cup holders and individual tables.

Amenities in DIA's C Concourse expansion for Southwest Airlines will feature iPads integrated in custom high-top tables, providing an opportunity for customers to order beverages and receive concierge service, or simply to check e-mail, review flight status, and catch up on the news. Improved seating choices will include electrical outlets, cup holders and individual tables.

New concession tenants will be: eSavvy, a partnership with PeachMac featuring popular electronic accessories and devices from top brands; Say Si Bon Marketplace, offering gourmet snacks and news in an atmosphere evocative of a French market; the Coors Silver Bullet Sports Pub, where sports fans will gather to watch Denver's top teams; and Modmarket, with a menu of farm fresh offerings. Air travelers will also find pop-up

concepts such as Tapas Sky Bar, Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, and Colorado's own ink! Coffee.

"We're excited to partner with DIA and Paradies on the integration of this new customer experience for our Denver customers, as we continue to bring more service options to the market," said Dave Ridley, Southwest Airlines senior vice president for business development.

of United's new air connection and visit Idaho.

The resort, which opened in 1936, has been the locale for more than a half dozen motion pictures, and was visited often by Hollywood stars: Claudette Colbert, Gary Cooper, Bing Crosby, Errol Flynn, and Clark Gable.

Sun Valley is located in the Wood River Valley between the Sawtooth and Pioneer mountain ranges in central Idaho.

You'll arrive at Friedman Memorial Airport (SUN) in Hailey, Idaho, just down the valley from the Sun Valley Resort. If you're a mountain biker, you won't have to go far to access great biking trails. Croy Canyon and its bike trails begin immediately west of Hailey.

Near Sun Valley (about 60 miles away) is Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve.

The National Park Service describes it as, "a vast ocean of lava flows with scattered islands of cinder cones and sagebrush." Bald Mountain, Sun Valley's dominant peak (known as "Baldy" by the locals), has 28 miles of hiking and biking trails. You can hike to the top of the mountain (9,150 feet) and take a chair lift and gondola back to the valley. Speaking of gondolas, the Roundhouse Gondola takes riders halfway up Bald Mountain to the Roundhouse—a restaurant that is about as old as the resort itself (it opened in 1939). The Roundhouse, which serves lunch, is known for its great views. It's a popular spot for relaxing in the sun and enjoying landscape panoramas as you sip cocktails at Averell's bar, which was named for W. Averell Harriman, who purchased the initial 4,300 acres to build the resort. As head of Union Pacific railroad, Harriman wanted a luxury resort that would entice travelers to travel west by train in winter—not only in summer.

Hiking trails near Sun Valley and its neighboring old mining town, Ketchum, include the Warm Springs Trail, Cold Springs Trail and Broadway Trail. You can climb nearby peaks Johnstone, Boyle and Fox or choose a horizontal jaunt by walking along Wood River.

Mountain biking and trekking are two of the more robust summer activities to be found in Sun Valley. For the adventurous, there's paragliding off the slopes of Bald Mountain or whitewater rafting on the Salmon River. If you seek a more tranquil float, sign on for a ride through the majestic Sawtooth Valley and The Upper Salmon River Canyon.

Tranquility incarnate is Redfish Lake, about an hour north of Sun Valley. At Redfish you can swim, fish, boat or lay on the beach. Other lakes in the area are also destinations for sunbathing and swimming.

No resort worth its salt would lack golf courses—and Sun Valley doesn't. You can hit the links at any of three courses: the signature original course, Trail Creek; the 18-hole Elkhorn, designed by the father-son team Robert Trent Jones Jr. and Sr.; and the nine-hole White Clouds, which has lots of elevation changes. The Sun Valley Lodge has a spa, enclosed swimming pool, tennis courts, and other offerings typical of a world-class resort.

The new service between Denver and Sun Valley will run from July 2 through Sept. 23

Plane Pull

Special Olympics Colorado, in partnership with Law Enforcement Torch Run, hosted its second annual Plane Pull fundraiser at Denver International Airport on Aug. 9. The event raised more than $82,000 to date from individuals and corporate teams that participated, from pledges for plane pullers, and from corporate sponsorships.

The plane pull is a competition among teams—each team having 25 people—who pull a 164,000-pound Boeing 757 commercial jet at least 12 feet in the shortest time. More than 50 teams competed this year.

The 2014 Plane Pull for Special Olympics Colorado was supported by the following sponsors: Denver International Airport, Signature Flight Support (the event took place on its ramp and in its hangar), Law Enforcement Torch Run, 850KOA, Jeppesen, FedEx (which provided the B-757), American Family Insurance, Rocky Mountain Law Enforcement Credit Union, HMS Host, U.S. Air Force Academy Athletics, and Morgan Awards.

Last year's Plane Pull at DIA drew close to 50 teams and raised $75,800.

Teams and individuals continue to fundraise online through this week at www.SpecialOlympicsCO.org.

Snow Crews Test Skills in Annual Snow Roadeo

DIA's expert snow removal crews competed Aug. 6 in the airport's 30th Annual Aviation Snow Roadeo. The event serves as the kickoff to DIA's snow removal season. To participate in each event, employees must complete a written test on the rules of the road (and airfield), a diagnostic vehicle inspection, and a timed obstacle course. In addition to taking part in the Snow Roadeo, workers will complete more than a month of snow removal training, including coursework.

As a judge monitors his degree of precision, an operator of this piece of airport snow removal equipment competes in DIA's Snow Roadeo on Aug. 6.The airport is celebrating 30 years of its Snow Roadeo competition.

The Snow Roadeo tests an operator's ability to maneuver vehicles by simulating roadway barriers or hazards. Some are tests of skill and agility, such as using the blade under a grader to knock a softball off a holder into a basket, placing a bucket into a barrel with the bucket of a loader, maneuvering for mirror clearance, and backing into an alley dock.

The annual competition offers four separate events:

Single Axle Snow Plow – a two-person team eventTandem Axle Snow Plow – a two-person team eventWheel Loader – an individual eventMotor Grader - an individual event

The top three winners in each event of DIA's Snow Roadeo competition go on to compete in the 34th Annual Western Snow and Ice Conference and National Snow Roadeo. Watch the Snow Roadeo video.
