From the President . . . Happy2010FriendsandColleagues,

The year 2009 has proved to be a difficult one formost of us. Our state governmentgrouped school employees and teachers in with the "non‐essential" services andfurloughs have cut wages and lost instructional time. We lost Les Paul, Lukas Foss,Michael Jackson, and many other prominent musicians. We saw our wonderfulsymphony orchestra lose its funding and declare bankruptcy. Fortunately, music has

continuedtoenrichourlivesandthelivesofourstudents.

Musicisacrucialpartofourdays.Wesing,playinstruments,dance,andlistentoahugediversityofmusiconourradios,stereos,andMP3players.Youngpeoplestrum`ukuleleonstreetcorners.Childrenperforminconcerts,inlivingrooms,andclassrooms.Theylearn,grow,andgainconfidencethroughtheirparticipationinmusic.Innosmallpart,youaremakingadifferenceinyourstudents' lives.Youarehelpingthemgrowintomusicians, lawyers,custodians,doctors, teachers,andcontractorswithwell‐roundededucations.Youarereachingouttothosewhoneedmusicinourcommunitiesandworkingtogethertomakeadifference.Letmefirstandforemostsay"Mahalo."

Pleasedon'tgetdisheartened,but instead,getvocal.Musicshouldbe inEVERYschool forEVERYchild inour beautiful state. Talk to your colleagues, friends, neighbors, administrators, and government officialsaboutmusic'sroleinourschools.IncludedinthisissuearematerialsfromMENCabouthowtoadvocateformusictoourparentsandourprincipals.

Irecentlyrereadaspeechaformerprofessorofminegavetocollegemusicstudentsandtheirparentsmorethan5yearsago.Ican'tmakeabettercaseforwhyIthinkmusicismorecriticalinoursocietythanhedid.PleasetakeafewminutestoreadDr.KarlPaulnack'smessage.

ShirleyLacroixDirector,ProductManagementMarketing,MusicandArtwithPearson isaContributingAuthor of SilverBurdett Making Music. Since 1987, she has been associatedwith thecompanyasaperdieminmusicandleadclinicianatSummerMusicWorkshops.Shirleyhas alsopresented at regional and national MENC meetings and for theNationalLaboratorySchoolAssociation.Withovertwentyyearsofteachingexperience,Shirleyhas

taughtelementary general music and middle and high school choralmusic in the Northeast. Before shejoined Pearson, she wasan Associate Professor of Education at Rhode Island Collegewhere shetaughtelementary general music in the campuslaboratory schooland courses for undergraduateandgraduate students in music education. Shirley’s degrees include a Bachelor of Music in VocalPerformanceandMusic Education fromAnnaMaria College, aMasters of Arts in Teaching ofMusic fromRhodeIslandCollegeandaPh.D.inEducationfromtheUniversityofRhodeIsland.

PeterBoonshaft

Peter Loel Boonshaft holds Bachelor of Music (Summa Cum Laude), Master of MusicEducationinConducting,andDoctorofMusicalArtsdegrees.HeiscurrentlyonthefacultyofHofstraUniversityinHempstead,NewYork,whereheisProfessorofMusicandDirectorofBands.HeisConductoroftheHofstraUniversityWindEnsembleandSymphonicBand,professor of conducting and music education, and Director of the graduate wind‐conductingprogram.Dr.BoonshaftistheauthorofthecriticallyacclaimedbooksTeaching

KirkKassnerMr. Kassner has recently retired after 40 years of teaching all levels from pre‐schoolthrough graduate school: band, chorus, orchestra, general music, music theory & eartraining,andmusicpedagogy.Heisauthorofover70publications,NationallyCertifiedin1993, has presented hundreds of sessions throughout American and Europe, andmentoredover50internteachersandnewandstrugglingteachers.

NolaA.Nahulu

Schooled at Whitman College and UH Mānoa (MA, Music Education), Nola Nahulu hasdevotedherselftoeducatingHawai`i’schildrensince1978attheOurRedeemerLutheranSchool, the Kamehameha Schools, and the University Lab School. Since 1982 she hasdirected theHawaiianChorusat theUHMusicDepartment.Herbroadchoralexperiencealso includes Hawai`i Children's Chorus, Moloka`i Children's Chorus, and the BishopMemorial Choir. She is currently choral director for Pearl Harbor Hawaiian Civic Club,

Kawaiaha`oChurch,Hawai`iOperaTheatre,andKaWaiolaoNaPukanileoandhasservedastheExecutiveDirector fortheHawai`iYouthOperaChorussince1986. InhersparetimeshesingswithNoKaliko,anacappellatriodevotedtoHawaiianchoralmusic.WithherfamilysheisownerofBete,Inc.,manufacturerofclassicmu`umu`u.Ms. Nahulu has also served the community as a boardmember of FM/AMMusic andSocietyforGeneralMusic,asapanelist fortheStateFoundationonCultureandtheArtsandasPresidentandmemberof theboardof theAmericanChoralDirectors'Association,Hawai`iChapter. InhonorofhermanyactivitiesshewasnamedHawaiianoftheYearin1987bytheAssociationofHawaiianCivicClubs.

BarbaraMcLainBarbaraMcLainiscurrentlyanassociateprofessorattheUniversityofHawai`iinHonolulu.Prior to that time, shewas amember of themusic education faculty at theUniversity ofNorthCarolinainGreensboroandtaughtinstrumentalandvocalmusicinthepublicschoolsofArizona,Illinois,andIndiana.Dr.McLainisanactiveadjudicator,clinicianandauthorandrecently served as the National Collegiate Chair for the Music Educators National

Conference(MENC).HerarticleshaveappearedinprofessionaljournalsincludingTheInstrumentalist,theMusic Educators Journal, the Journal of the College Band Directors National Association, College MusicSociety Symposium,NewWays,T.U.B.A. Journal, andTriad. She receivedaB.M.E. degree fromAugustanaCollege,RockIsland,IL;aM.M.degreefromtheUniversityofArizona,andthePh.D.degreefromTheOhioState University. She has extensive experience as a conference speaker, concert and marching bandclinician/adjudicatorandhasservedasguestconductorfornumeroushonorbandsacrossthecountry.

Featured ethnicmusic and dances include those of Hawaii, Tahiti, Samoa, Tonga,New Zealand, Chuuk, Kosrae, Japan, Korea, China and Vietnam. Their diverse repertoire ranges fromPachelbel’s“CanoninD”totheTemptation’s“MyGirl”,fromhulakahikotocontemporaryHawaiian.Crowdpleasersinclude“LeiPikake”,“Waikiki”,“TheGreatPretender”,“PhantomoftheOperaMedley”,and“LeanOnMe”.

MargueriteWilderMarguerite Wilder is widely recognized as a conductor and clinician, having conductedhonor bands throughout the United States, Canada, England, Italy, Turkey, and Australia.Servingasaresourcepersonforin‐servicesessions,sheworkswithbothlocalandregionalschoolsystemsanduniversities.Herclinicsonmotivationaltechniquesforbeginningbandare often featured at state and national conventions, including the Midwest Band and

Orchestra Conference. During the summer, Marguerite serves as a conductor/clinician for the Bands ofAmerica Concert Band Camp in Normal, Illinois, and numerous middle school music camps. She is acontributingauthorforTeachingMusicthroughPerformanceinBeginningBandandacontributingeditorfor Do It! Play Recorder and Do It! Play Clarinet, published by GIA Publications. MargueriteWilder is agraduateoftheUniversityofGeorgiaandGeorgiaStateUniversity.Professionalaffiliations includeMENC,GMEA,NBA,andPhiBetaMu.

Dr.JoeRuszkowskiDr.RuszkowskiteachesmusicatKamehamehaSchools,theHonoluluWaldorfSchools,andtheUniversityofHawai’i’sPacificNewMedia.HeistheformerAssistantProfessorofMusicTechnology at the University of Hawai`i, assistant band director at Hawai`i PacificUniversity, and Associate Director of Music Technology at the Word of Life Academy in

Honolulu. Dr. Ruszkowski is awell‐known consultant in Hawai`i, and his services are available from hiscompany, “MusicTechPro”.He isa1990graduateofTempleUniversity inPhiladelphiawithaBachelorofMusicEducationdegree,a1993graduateoftheUniversityofWyomingwithaMasterofMusicdegree,anda2006graduateoftheUniversityofHawai`iwithaPh.D.inMusic.

Eurhythmics. Frego is past‐president of the Dalcroze Society of America. As an instructor in DalcrozeEurhythmicsheregularlypresentsworkshopsthroughoutNorthAmerica,Europe,Asia,andtheMiddleEast.In 1998, Frego established the Dalcroze Research Center in the Lawrence and Lee Theatre ResearchInstituteatOhioState.Hisresearchinmovement‐basedmusiceducationandtherapyispublishedinmusiceducationjournalsandmedicaljournalsforartsmedicine.OtherteachingandresearchareasincludedancephilosophyandtheapplicationofDalcrozeEurhythmicsaspalliativecareforterminallyilladults.

AmyLynnSchiffnerMs.SchiffneriscurrentlyanAssistantProfessorofDanceandTheatreattheUniversityofHawai`i atMānoa.Her primary areas of teaching include pedagogy, theory and criticism,anddancetechnique.AmyholdsaMasterofFineArtsDegreeinDancefromtheUniversityofCaliforniaatIrvine,aBachelorofArtsDegreeinEnglishEducationfromCaliforniaStateUniversityLongBeachandaCaliforniaSingleSubjectTeachingCredential.Amyisastrongarts education advocate who supports local community outreach programs and serves

leadership roles in many professional arts organizations. Amy’s primary research interest are in artsassessment, academic literacyandarts curriculumdevelopment. Investment in creativeprojectswill alsocontinuetobeanimportantpartofherwork.Amyrecentlypublishedherthesiswork,BroadeningStudentLearningExperienceswithAcademicLiteracy:AnApproachtoCurriculumandInstructionDesign.Amywasan invited guest speaker at the Annual California High School Summit in 2005,where she presented onStandardsandAssessmentinArtsEducation.During2005‐2007AmyheldthepositionofartisticassistanttoworldrenownedchoreographerDonaldMcKayle.Shehaschoreographedmanyoriginalworksincluding,Traffic(05),Faith(06)andAngularArticulation(07)thathavebeenshowcasedinavarietyofperformancevenues.Amywasa2004InnovativeChoreographerrecipientfromtheNationalDanceAlliance.HerdancetrainingincludesbeingascholarshipstudentattheAlvinAileyAmericanDanceTheatreSchoolinNYC.Amyhasdancedwithmany southernCaliforniadance companies including InlandPacificBallet, InlandDanceTheatre, and Intersect Dance Companywhere she performed numerous principle roles including SophiaCarreras2004.

DavidO.Akombo,Ph.D.Dr. Akombo is currently an Assistant Professor covering content in Music Education,Ethnomusicology,Multi‐culturalmusiceducation,Teachingandlearningtheory,Psychologyof music, Choral and Instrumental arranging, and African dance performance. Interestsincludemusictechnologyandinterdisciplinarystudiesinmusicandbiomedicalsciences.

JudyBondJudyBond,CoordinatorofMusicEducation,teachesundergraduatemusiceducationcoursesandisresponsibleforthesupervisionofthestudentteachingprogramforchoralandgeneralmusiceducationmajors. JudyearnedaPh.D. fromtheUniversityofMinnesota,whereshetaughtundergraduatemusiceducationcoursesandconductedresearchintheareaofmulti‐culturalmusicasitrelatestogeneralmusiceducation.Herpublicschoolexperienceincludes

In1990shewasCo‐DirectoroftheInternationalsummerCourseattheOrffInstituteinSalzburg,Austria.Hermostrecent international teaching was in China, where she taught a course for Chinese music teachers atTsinghua University in Beijing. Judy served on the Board of Directors of the American Orff SchulwerkAssociation for tenyears,duringwhich she servedasNationalConferenceChair andPresident. She is anhonorarymemberoftheorganization.JudyisanauthorofSHARETHEMUSICandSPOTLIGHTONMUSIC,twowidelyusedmusictextbookseriesforK‐8publishedbyMacmillan/McGraw‐Hill.

Mr.Wallhasledactivity‐based;life‐skilllearningprogramsforovertwentyyearsandistheauthor of the book “Live Your Dreams.” Michael is the curriculum designer and courseleader for the ten‐day Discovery Accelerated Learning Program in New Zealand andAustralia.Hisadultteambuilding,“RhythmsofChange,”hasbeenfeaturedonKHNL‐TV’sHawaiianMovingCompany.MichaelisanARTSFIRSTInstitutementor,andhascompleted

boththeKennedyCenterandReflectiveTeachingArtistsworkshops.

Sandra Cox, winner of the National Flute Association’s Convention Performer’sCompetitionin2003and2004,performedattheNationalFluteAssociationConventionsin Las Vegas and Nashville. She received her D.M.A. degree from the University ofMemphis,whereshestudiedwithBruceErskine.

U.S. Army All-American Marching Band . . . CongratulationstoChristopherBright,senioratKamehamehaSchools,whowasselectedfor,and performed in the 2010 U.S. Army All‐American Marching Band on January 9 in SanAntonio,Texas!

The U.S. Army All‐American Bowl is the premier high school football game in the nation.ProducedbySportsLink,itfeaturesthenation'stophighschoolseniorfootballplayersandmarchingmusicians.StudentsselectedasAll‐AmericansreceivepaidtripstoSanAntoniotomarch in the halftime performance of the All‐American Bowl at the Alamodome. The

students are honored in a national selection tour and receivemediarecognition.

Christopheristhefirststudent fromHawai`iwhohashadtheopportunityofperforming
