By David Ellis, Attorney-at-Law

Everyone is worried what this rocky stock market, shaky economy and painful belt-

tightening will mean for our retire-ment. But do these tough times mean you have to give up your dream of a comfortable, worry-free retirement? Absolutely not!

By making the right moves now, you can ensure your nest egg lasts the rest of your life…tap a hidden fortune by spending smarter (without cutting corners) …and even grow your retirement savings to new heights, in spite of today’s uncertain economy.

How do I know this? Well, extraordinary times like these call for extraordinary measures! That’s why I pulled together some of the world’s best financial minds, including analysts and economists from Morningstar and Standard & Poor’s…CEOs of insurance and investment companies…the country’s lead-ing wealth advisors…and top-

notch tax and estate planning experts.

I was amazed by the wealth of information these experts shared with me. For starters, this one secret can help you rebuild your battered portfolio in plenty of time to still enjoy your dream retire-ment—no matter what your age…

Simple Way to Beat the Market and Rebuild

Your Portfolio FastThink you need to pay fat fees

to financial advisers and fund managers to rack up market-beating returns? Think again.

As you’re about to discover, there’s a better way to beat the market and rebuild your portfolio fast. Some of the world’s most suc-cessful investors—including Warren Buffett—swear by this investing secret. Even better, this simple strategy requires mini-mum time and effort, and can save you a fortune in investment fees.

Do This and Pocket an Extra $6,000 or More

Each YearSaving on investment fees means

bigger returns for you. Take a look at the typical expense ratio for an index fund: Just 0.5% or less. Compare that to the average 1.4% fee managed funds charge (nearly three times more!)

Then there are the higher trad-ing costs for actively buying and selling stocks—up to 1% of assets—which also get piled onto your tab. Before long, you’re looking at 2.4% or more of your portfolio being eaten away each year by these fat fees.

On the other hand, if you invest your nest egg in index funds, you’re already ahead by nearly 2% a year simply by slashing these fees to the bone. If you’re sitting on a $300,000 portfolio, that can add up to an extra $6,000 a year right off the bat! And in these tough times, the more money you keep in your pocket, the better.

But what happens when you need to start taking that money out? How can you make sure you never run out of dough…and have plenty to live on the rest of your life? The solution is easier than you may think…

Easy Way to Make Sure You NEVER Run Out

of MoneyOnce you retire and your pay-

checks stop coming, the only money you can count on is a monthly Social Security check and (if you’re lucky) a pension from a previous employer. Other than that, you’re banking on stretching out the nest egg you’ve squirreled away in your IRA, 401(k) and other retirement accounts for 30 or more years.

So what’s the ideal amount to safely withdraw each year—in

good times or bad? Most experts recommend the “4% solution” for retirees who need to live off their investments. Here’s how it works.

The first year you withdraw 4% of your retirement account. In each year that follows, you increase that amount by the annual rate of inflation to maintain your standard of living. For example, if you’re sitting on a $300,000 nest egg, the first year you would take out 4%, or $12,000. If the rate of inflation is 3% the following year, you would increase that $12,000 amount by 3% to $12,480, and so on.

Studies show this “4% solution” practically guarantees your retire-ment money lasts for 30 years or more, based on historic returns from stocks and bonds. But is this the best approach to take in a down market?

The top investment and retirement planning experts I spoke with reveal their latest advice in a new Special Report, called Best Wealth Secrets for a Worry-free Retirement. I’ve reserved a FREE copy in your name. There’s no

cost or obligation. It’s my gift to help you make sure your retirement years are everything you’ve worked so hard for.

This FREE Special Report tells you exactly how to tap your retire-ment portfolio in this rollercoaster stock market. You need this infor-mation now more than ever to make sure your nest egg can weather the storms and last a lifetime.

But that’s not all. You also need to know which assets to withdraw to keep your portfolio safe and growing in the years to come.

The Right Way and the Wrong Way to Tap Your

Retirement AssetsIf you’re like many retirees, you

probably have savings in both tax-

Investing in index funds. That’s right, index funds!

Index funds may not get much respect from professional inves-tors, nor are they as exciting or sexy as investing in the hottest trends. But they tend to rack up much bigger returns over time than do managed funds.

That’s due to two reasons. First, you may be surprised to learn even the pros can’t beat the mar-ket year after year. A recent Standard & Poor’s report shows most fund managers underper-formed the S&P’s indices for the past 5 years.

Second, index funds of fer expense ratios that are much lower than those for managed funds, since they simply mirror a particular index. So you keep more of your hard-earned money working for you!

Bottom Line/RETIREMENT publishes the opinions of expert authorities in many fields. But these opinions are no substitute for legal, accounting, investment, medical and other professional services to suit your specific personal needs. Better than Viagra?

Eating watermelon may be good for your sex life!

That’s because watermelon con-tains phytonutrients that can deliver Viagra-like benefits to your blood vessels and libido.

A recent study out of Texas A&M Universitysuggests lyco-pene, beta-carotene and citroline —all present in watermelon—can help relax blood vessels in the same way Viagra does. What’s more, watermelon actu-ally increases blood flow and helps reduce erectile dysfunc-tion. Bonus benefit: You don’t have to worry about risky drug side effects like headaches, heart attacks and vision changes. •

able and non-taxable retirement accounts. But sometimes it’s con-fusing to know which accounts to tap first. Make a mistake and sell the wrong investments from the wrong accounts and you could quickly drain your nest egg or pay unnecessary taxes.

One common mistake is to start withdrawing money from your IRAs, 401(k)s and other non-tax-able retirement accounts as soon as you retire. This may make sense since retirement is what you’ve saved this money for in the first place.

But your financial future could be a lot brighter if you draw on your taxable accounts first—and keep your hands off your non-taxable retirement accounts as long as government rules allow, typically age 70½. Meanwhile, this gives your investments extra time to grow, so you can rebuild your nest egg as the economy recovers.

Tapping your taxable accounts first is just one way to turn your retirement savings into a lifelong money machine. You’ll discover

two other strategies that can help you stretch out your nest egg and take a big bite out of tax bills in your FREE Special Report, Best Wealth Secrets for a Worry-free Retirement. Plus you’ll also discover…•How to protect 50% of your

Warren Buffett’s success on Wall

Street has made him the richest man in the world. No one has a better record of protecting assets and m a k i n g s h r e w d investments in diffi-cult economic times.

Now you can be privy to the same secrets Buf fett uses to build and maintain his immense wealth in bull or bear markets. By following this time-tested advice, you can survive and thrive in spite of whatever the market

or economy throws your way.

SEcRET #1: FocUS oN baRGaiNS.

Buffett is a stickler for only buying qual-ity companies with an ethical, commit-

ted management team. Often he finds these companies in essen-tial but unexciting industries. He then patiently waits to buy them at large discounts — at up to 40% off their value. In a bear market, these types of bargains abound.

SEcRET #2: NEvER SEll iNTo a PaNic.

The recent mar-ket upheaval has made this a tough secret to follow. But Buf fett isn’t wor-ried about the big

picture for America. He believes the economy will do very well and so will people who own a piece of it. A few years from now, we’ll look back and see we could have made some extraordinary buys.

Foolproof Trick to Remembering Almost Anythingif you’ve ever walked

into a room and promptly forgot why you did…forgot some-one’s name almost right after hearing it…or couldn’t remember where you parked your car or what you meant to get at the store, don’t worry. These memory lapses are fairly common as we age. But it doesn’t mean they’re not frustrating or embarrassing!

Now there’s a simple way to remember almost anything. An ancient memory technique called the “Roman Room Method” can significantly boost your memory power. Orators back in Ancient Rome remembered lengthy speeches using this secret. Here’s how it works...

Visualize yourself walking a familiar route, such as the rooms in your house. Mentally place images to be remembered on specific points on the route. For example, if you want to remem-ber to buy coffee, mentally place coffee beans on your kitchen counter. Then later at the gro-cery store, when you’re trying to remember what you ran in for, you simply retrace your steps.

Over time, you can add more objects in your rooms. If you

want to remember to pick up the newspaper, add it next to the coffee beans. If you want to remember your airline tickets, tape them to the refrigerator door. You can add more rooms and other familiar loca-tions to help you with

certain kinds of memory tasks. You’ll find other brain-boosting

techniques in your FREE Special Report, Best Health Secrets for an Active Retirement, including: •Why saying this one word

improves your memor y. Strange but true.•Simple technique makes

relying on lists almost obso-lete. Three-step mind-linking technique puts data magically at your fingertips. Use it to remem-ber grocery lists, honey-do’s, errands, names and more.•How ha i r br ushing

ment. Left untreated, high blood pressure dramatically raises your risk for hear t attack, stroke, dementia, and heart or kidney fail-ure.

Doctors usually treat high blood pressure with prescription drugs. But these drugs are notorious for causing dangerous side effects such as dizziness, insomnia, depression, impotence and leg cramps, just to name a few. What’s more, these drugs can cost $800 or more a year. It’s no wonder an estimated 80% of people over 65 with hypertension don’t take med-ications as prescribed!

Know Your NumbersOptimal blood pressure:

120/80 to 139/89Stage 1 hypertension: 140/90 to 159/99Stage 2 hypertension:

160/100

If you’re worried about high blood pressure or want to avoid the high costs and side effects of drugs, you’ll be happy to know there are safe, natural alternatives that can drop your blood pressure to normal and keep it there.

For example, you may be sur-prised to discover that something as simple as eating more protein can lower your blood pressure. This may be because protein con-tains compounds that prevent the production of a chemical known to constrict blood vessels. Research shows you can see results in as little as 6 weeks!

Many people don’t eat the ideal amount of protein each day. And much of the protein we eat isn’t high-quality protein. For example, red meat and eggs also contain high levels of cholesterol or fat.

One of the best ways to add high-quality protein to your diet is

to help. Ask your regular carpenter, plumber or electrician if they know of a trustworthy person to help with minor repairs.

Cure Headaches and Muscle Aches— with Peppermint?!

When your head hurts and your muscles ache, you want to feel better, fast. Often this means reaching

for an over-the-counter or prescrip-tion pain reliever. But there are natural pain stoppers that offer the same relief—without unwanted side effects like upset stomach, ulcers or even liver damage.

For starters, next time you get a headache, try this natural alter-native to aspirin and ibuprofen: Peppermint. Simply drink a cup of peppermint tea, or place a dab of peppermint oil on your temples. It makes a mild headache vanish almost instantly.

Acupressure is also effective for relieving mild tension headaches, backaches and muscle cramps. This ancient Chinese technique uses gentle pressure and light massage on specific pressure points to make pain disappear.

study found two little-known foods that can have a much greater impact in warding off macular degeneration, the leading cause of blindness in people over age 65.

Harvard researchers studied more than 70,000 men and women, and found that eating fish cuts your risk for this degenerative eye disease—especially tuna fish.

In fact, people who eat canned tuna more than once a week are 40% less likely

to go blind than those who eat tuna less than once a month. Note: As long as you don’t eat more than 12 ounces of canned tuna a week, you don’t have to worry about mercury.

If you (or a loved one) already suffer from macular degeneration, another common food can help save your pre-cious eyesight: Nuts! Research shows eating just one handful per day of any type of nut slows the progression of macular degeneration by as much as 40%.

cal problems can quickly turn into major financial problems. But there are many ways you can cut big medical bills down to size.

One thing you can do is to always ask your health care pro-viders for itemized bills. This is especially important after surgery or a hospital stay. With an item-ized bill, you can spot double bill-ing and charges for services not rendered. Plus you can compare these bills with the statements you receive from your insurance company or Medicare. You won’t get these itemized bills unless you ask—and they can save you a fortune!

Here’s another money-saving tip most people overlook. If a claim is denied, ask your health care provider if the procedure was coded properly. Many times insurance and Medicare reject

power since 2000 due to the ris-ing cost of food, energy, prescrip-tion drugs and other expenses.

But thanks to this FREE Special Report, you’ll discover smart, clever ways to get more for less. Slash your healthcare costs to the bone. And cut your everyday expenses for food, electricity, insurance premiums, even taxes! Let me share with you a few examples to help you start saving right away…

In many cases, you can take a free tour and get free samples—all while expanding your culinary horizons. Three road trips to consider…■ Vermont Cheese Trail. Sample three dozen individual

Best Used Cars for Older DriversSave thousands…and find the safest, smoothest, easiest car to drive

it’s no secret t h a t y o u

c a n s a v e thousands of do l lars by buying a used car. New cars

depreciate as much as 20% in their first year alone. While sav-ing money is important, older drivers often care more about the practical issues of driving.

You want to know your car is safe, easy to drive and park. A smooth ride, comfortable seats and good gas mileage are impor-tant factors too. Plus, it would be nice if the car was easy to get in and out of.

Here are some great used car choices at af fordable prices. Since used car prices can vary significantly due to condition and mileage, it’s helpful to check specific details in a used-car pric-ing guide such as the Kelley Blue Book for current pricing.

Compact: Toyota Corolla (2002–2007)

T h e Corolla is actually f a i r l y large for

a compact with good, head, leg and shoulder room for both front- and rear-seat occupants. Also, it doesn’t have a steeply angled windshield/roof (as on some other compacts) that can make it hard for people with lim-ited mobility to get in and out of. It has performed very well in government crash testing. Later models sport such safety fea-tures as antilock brakes, dual front air bags—and even side impact bags.

Midsize: Buick LaCrosse (2005–2007)

T h e L a C r o s s e offers you a plush and quiet ride,

roomy interior and upscale styl-ing. The car can seat as many as six passengers comfortably (depending on whether it has bench or bucket seats). It comes standard with a smooth and pow-erful V-6. Prices for slightly used models (only a year or two old) are extremely reasonable.

Large: Mercury Grand Marquis

The Grand Marquis is the last of the traditionally built full-size American roomy sedans. It has a cavernous interior that can sit six comfortably with a huge (21-cubic foot) trunk. Its 4.6 liter V-8 engine provides easy power without hav-ing to mash the gas pedal. The car is simple and rugged and pro-vides a long service life and low-cost maintenance. It’s exception-ally safe in a crash due to its large size. It scores as high as a Mercedes-Benz E-Class or BMW 5 series in crash tests, but costs tens of thousands of dollars less.

How to Scam-Proof Your Computer Password

Today, scam-mers use

sophisticated software to decipher common computer passwords. For example, if your password is a date, name, word or a repeating or progressive series of letters or numbers such as “zzzz” or “2468”, a high-tech criminal could quickly crack it.

The safest way to protect yourself is to use a multiple-word phrase that’s memorable to you, such as “my2dogsareyel-low” or “Ilikeham.” Two other helpful ways to scam-proof your password: Use different pass-words for each account and NEVER write them down near your computer. •

companies have come up with doz-ens of clever ways to trap you with outrageous credit card fees. But you can fight back.

For example, let’s say you use your credit card more than usual during a particular month (most credit cards no longer decline pur-chases that exceed the credit limit). No merchant declines it, so you assume you’re under your credit limit.

Instead, they allow the transac-tion, charge you an over-the-limit fee of up to $39 and increase your interest rate to a “default rate” as high as 30%. To prevent this from happening, call your credit card and request that any charges above your credit limit be declined.

That’s just one sneaky practice credit card companies don’t want you to know about. You’ll discover five more credit card fee traps to

it’s no secret most weight-loss diets are

hard to stick to. After all, you have to elimi-nate 500 calories a day just to lose one pound by the end of the week.

As you probably know, diets often leave you feeling hungry most of the time, making it hard to stay on a diet for very long. It’s no wonder that 95% of people who do manage to lose weight are unable to keep it off for longer than a year or two!

But here’s a better and simpler solution to weight loss than a fad diet. The secret is to eat foods that curb your appetite and help you feel full.

For example, a small handful of pine nuts can make you feel full. That’s because pine nuts stimulate the body to release a hormone called cholecystokinin, or CCK. This hormone helps you feel fuller, even when you’re eating fewer calories.

Another way to feel full is to eat a little fat with every meal. Until recently, fat was consid-ered a “no-no” since it contains a higher number of calories. But since fat is more satisfying, it makes you crave less food—so you end up eating fewer calories

overall. So next time you eat a salad, use full-fat salad dressing— in moderation —instead of fat-free.

There’s an old joke that says, “Be kind to your children. They choose

your nursing home.” But there’s nothing funny about nursing homes — or ending up in one.

The good news is, moving to a nursing home doesn’t have to be your fate. As you grow older, you can stay in your home safely, comfortably, cost-ef fectively — and indefinitely. All it takes is some smart planning. Here are five smart moves you can make now to help you stay in your home forever.

SmaRT movE #1: SmaRTEN UP yoUR HoUSE

M i n o r renovations, s u c h a s increased l i g h t i n g ,

extra handrails and getting rid of scatter rugs, electrical cords and other trip hazards can keep you safe at home. Consider adding

a first-floor master bedroom and bath. Another renovation to consider would be to widen doorways in case one day you’re in a wheelchair. Other safety renovations include a more accessible kitchen and entry-ways. To help you plan effec-tively, look for general con- tractors with expertise in home modifications for retirees.

SmaRT movE #2: GET GooD iN-HomE HElP

Housekeeping, cooking, laun-dr y, personal errands, even walking the dog

can become more than pesky, time-consuming tasks later in life. They can become impossible chores. Reputable home-care companies can provide reliable part-time housekeepers and home health aides. Look for a company that is licensed, bonded and insured, and does back-ground checks on employees. Specialists in eldercare issues can also arrange in-home care.

SmaRT movE #3: DoN’T Do iT yoURSElF

At some point, minor house-hold repairs , such as fixing a leaky sink or climbing a ladder

to clear gutters, may become dif ficult, even dangerous. Be smart. Know when it’s best to get a friend or family member
