A word from our Chapter President… Mike Lustig Dear Members, Chapter 266 has honoured past member Hank Smulders, who passed away March 16, 2011, with a plaque which has now been posted at the CAHC museum. Michel Moreau will have a few words to say about this gesture at our October meeting. Annual dues are now due. Please take advantage of this opportunity to renew now at the same inflation-busting price of $25. See John Dudkoff for this. Also, we are pleased to offer the possibility of paying chapter dues electronically for the first time. Speak to Roberto Cea-Campo for guidance on this. Chapter election for the Board of Directors will be held shortly. If you would like to volunteer to be a part of this exciting experience, please speak to me or any of our other friendly directors on Thursday. Best Regards to All, Mike Lustig President, EAA 266 A word from our Editor Richard Guevara A book I brought back from Oshkosh this summer was “GA Airfoils” by the late Harry Riblett, a gentleman who seemed not to be shy about letting his opinions be known to the homebuilder community and the FAA alike. I had heard this book mentioned here and there but never gave it any heed until I walked through the EAA bookstore and it attached itself to me (like in the movie Alien) so I had to buy it. I am sure that Leo and Nora can attest to this phenomenon. Riblett describes 98 airfoils for GSA powered aircraft. They are, in his words, selected and “cleaned up” NACA airfoils ready to be used by the airplane designer. Unsuitable and dangerous airfoils from the NACA collection were not included. He spent some time describing the sharp stall of the 5-digit airfoils and why they should not be used. One has to wander what the ATR-72 designers and the FAA think of his comments on their choice of the NACA 430xx airfoil. Riblett starts by giving a short history and synopsis of the early work done by NACA that form the basis of most of the airfoils in service today. But, he gives some new (to me) insights as to what NACA was thinking when it defined the many airfoil series families and later performed the wind tunnel testing. This was done in an era when digital computers had not yet been invented, so the experiment was the only means to validate airfoil theory, and did NACA perform experiments! This explains the reams of airfoils and NACA technical reports still available today. But the NACA test data and technical reports remain in their “raw” form and, to my knowledge, no one has made a seminal investigation into and produced an integrated tomb explaining how everything fits together and which airfoils are useful and which are not. It appears that Riblett’s book is an attempt at this daunting task.
