President’s Message

Hopefully everyone has had a chance to at least get out on the water and maybe do some fishing. If not, or if you are like me and just have not caught anything yet, then consider joining the Ron Shaefer Memorial Fishing Trip aboard Captain Randy Dean’s Bay Hunter fleet. The fishing trip will be held on Wednesday July 18. See Bill Walling at the meeting for information and see the later article and the accompanying flyer in this newsletter.

Several chapter members drove to Ocean City to fish aboard Captain Monty Hawkins’ Morning Star on Friday June 8 to fish for sea bass. From the pictures submitted by attending member Craig Teuber, it sure looked like everyone had a great time - especially chapter member Earl Macey who not only caught the largest fish, but, also walked away with most fish caught honors. Look for the picture of Earl’s big smile and winning fish with the article submitted by Jean Hoffman. You might even see Earl’s picture on the wall before our meeting gets under way.

do it. We will do our best to get your pictures on the wall at the next meeting.

The June 20 Chapter meeting is the last meeting to be held at the American Legion Post until we reconvene meetings at the Post in October of this year. The Ron Shaefer Memorial Fishing Trip, mentioned above, takes place on the July meeting date. In August, we take a break from meeting. Chapter member Larry Muscatello emailed me a news report video concerning the flesh eating bacteria vibrio. The report cited that the vibrio bacteria is more prevalent in the Chesapeake than what we may think. Bottom line is that you need to be careful when fishing and even being in contact with the water if you have open cuts. It might be a good idea to carry in your onboard medical kit some hydrogen peroxide or other anti-infection solution just in case.

I have seen various comments about the new fishing regulations which were included in the May 2018 newsletter. Some comments have not been positive regarding the fish mortality issue as deep hooking can still occur with the non-offset circle hooks. So the jury is still out on whether the regs are appropriate and will work for the intended purpose. But for now, the regs are the regs.

I look forward to seeing you at the July fishing trip and/or the September crab feast.

Responsibly enjoy the Bay and our rivers. Let’s get out there and fish.

MSSA Annapolis Chapter Meeting

June 20, 2018 Meeting, 7 p.m.

Speaker: Captain Brady Bounds

Topic: “Cold Water Immersion Survival and Light-Tackle Fishing Techniques”

Captain Brady Bounds was one of the first guides to embrace light-tackle fishing on the Chesapeake some 50 years ago. As a young man living in Leonardtown in St Mary’s County, Brady bought a used Chesapeake Bay deadrise. He then dedicated himself to becoming a skilled bay fisherman. He obtained his commercial license and earned money chartering the deadrise trolling, chumming, and bottom fishing. Captain Bounds was soon drawn to tournament bass fishing. To be competitive, Brady had to perfect his structure-fishing game. He shared his tournament knowledge and promoted bass and striped bass angling. Captain bounds prospered by chartering fly fishermen as he was certain he could get fly anglers on fish. This experience expanded his business as light tackle anglers wanted the big fish experience. Captain Bounds was one of the first to present fly and light tackle fishing on the Bay. Brady provides excellent shallow water, close range action on striped bass, speckled trout, red drum, bluefish, and many others, ac-cording to season. He is a fulltime year-round, licensed guide operating in the Chesapeake Bay and tributaries, in-cluding the Susquehanna Flats, Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, and the Potomac River. And by the way, Captain Bounds is a strong advocate of having his clients wear a PFD while out on the water.

Thanks to Bay Weekly from which this information on Captain Bounds was drawn.

Vendor: Matt Baden of Jig the Bay light tackle fishing store.

Matt Baden is owner of JigtheBay.com, a digital fishing store. Matt provides many types of fishing products includ-ing jig heads, soft plastics, top-water lures, books from well-known Bay anglers, and light tackle charter services by a number of charter guides.

MSSA Annapolis Chapter meetings are open to the public. Spouses and Children are most welcome to attend. There will be drawings for door prizes. When you arrive, don’t forget to get your free door prize ticket. A 50/50 raf-fle will be held; tickets are $5 each. Food and drinks are available at very reasonable prices at the American Legion Post. So arrive early and have dinner.

MSSA Annapolis Chapter meets at the American Legion Post #7, 1905 Crownsville Rd, Annapolis , MD. The meet-ing starts at 7 p.m.

9th Annual Rock On Warriors Fishing Event Postponed Due to Inclement Weather – Rescheduled for Sep-tember 8, 2018

The 9th Annual Rock On Warriors fishing event was set to be held on April 29, 2018. Detailed planning and organiz-ing were complete and the fleet of 25 boats and nearly 100 warriors and their guests were ready to go; however, the weather forecast degraded significantly overnight on April 27 and throughout the following day. A very strong low-pressure system brought 20 to 30 mile per hour winds and 4 to 6 foot seas to the Chesapeake Bay along with wind chills in the mid-30’s on April 29. A decision was made mid-day on April 28 to cancel the event to ensure the safety of our warriors, captains and crews.

The MSSA Annapolis Chapter is pleased to announce that Rock On Warriors has been rescheduled for September 8, 2018. The event will be held at Anchor Yacht Basin in Edgewater, MD with fishing in the morning and a BBQ in the afternoon.

Rock On Warriors would like to thank Anchor Yacht Basin and all of our sponsors and supporters; the day would not be possible without them. For additional information about Rock On Warriors visit www.facebook.com/rockonwar-riors or contact Brian Stempowski at [email protected].

OCEAN CITY FISHING TRIP

Fourteen people signed up for a beautiful day of black sea bass fishing aboard the Morningstar with Captain Monty at the helm. The weather was fantastic with a slight breeze, plenty of sunshine and flat seas. Anyone who has ever been fishing out in the ocean knows you don’t get many like it. We met up at 6am and by 6:30am we were underway.

We headed south with a stop to drop some block to create structure for coral. For those of you who don’t know, Cap-tain Monty is a big supporter of the offshore reef building project and we were honored to be aboard as the mates dropped block number 21,000 overboard. That mission accomplished it was on to a great day of fishing!

By the time we returned to dock it was 4:30pm and everyone was smiling, coolers packed with 107 keeper sea bass! Earl Macey beat out Lee Slagle for the biggest fish at 19” making him the winner of the “biggest fish pool”. He also caught the most fish of any single angler aboard that day, making him the overall winner for our chapter.

If you’ve never signed up for this event you are missing out on a truly great time with plenty of friendship and fish-ing action! Next time you find yourself in Ocean City, see Captain Monty and crew aboard the Morningstar for a great day of fishing.

On June 10, the MSSA Scholarship Foundation conducted the drawing for all prizes in the 2018 Sportsman’s Pack-age Raffle. Winners were notified by email or phone call.

During the following week winners of scholarships for academic year 2018 – 2019 were selected and notified of their awards.

I am pleased to report that the Scholarship Program will merge into the CCA Maryland Chapter organization shortly after the 2018 scholarships have been distributed to the winners. We look forward to continuing our environmental work to help educate the future scientists, engineers, and managers who will devote their careers to solve the press-ing problems of the Chesapeake Bay and coastal ocean waters. The Annapolis Chapter’s support has played a key role in the growth of the Scholarship Program over the past eight years. I look forward to forging a new relationship with you as we go forward together.
