Austin, a 7 year old boy with Cerebral Palsy is Sandy Murray’s grandson and a tournament was run on the 23rd September to support Austin and his family to go to the USA for life changing surgeries. Austin and his brother came along to the start of the day and spoke to the players. There was not a dry eye in the room after Austin made a heartfelt speech to thank everyone. Many members paid more than their entry fee and one very generous member donated $1000. The raffle organised by Carol, raised close to $700. Sandy was overwhelmed by the generosity of the members and wishes to thank you all.

Last day blues

Oh dear, so many tired people about and bids are missed, or forgotten.

Julie Sheridan did not see her partner (Karen Martelletti) open and thought she was making the first bid and went 1NT (11-14). The opposition overcalled 2S and Karen passed thinking Julie had 6-9 points. Luckily for Julie, after the 2S bid, she spotted Karen's 1D open, so was given a 2nd chance and bid 3NT. Poor Karen wondered how her partner could find so many points that must have been hidden when she made her 1NT response. All went well and 3NT made, but a few boards later Karen returned the compliment. After the opposition opened 1C, Julie bid 2C to show 2 suits the same colour. Karen thought that because the 1C bid could be strong and short, 2C was natural, as they have a different convention over the strong 1C. Neither thought to discuss their defence before the start of the match, so as a result neither were on the same page. The opposition could not pass fast enough and poor Julie ended up playing in a 2-0 fit when they could make 6 hearts !!! 5 light minus 250....opps !

I guess on day 8 and Boards 506th and 515th played that week will be re-membered for a wee while !!

Lifted from the Tauranga Bridge Club Website. (Thanks Karen)

Lead Tip #5

Do not lead a singleton against a slam if you have an ace. It is highly unlikely your partner has the ace of that suit to give you a ruff. Instead you are probably help declarer set up that suit by finding a missing honour

Leading an ace against a suit slam could promote a trick for the declarer, but failing to lead the ace may give the declarer a chance to discard that suit and you end up not making the ace at all. An ace will be right more often than not, but listen to the bidding, as there maybe a clue here.

Bidding Tip #3

When RHO uses Stayman and you are in fourth hand and have five or six clubs headed by 2 touching honours or the Ace, double to alert your partner you want a club lead against any eventual contract.

A double of an artificial bid is called a lead directing double.

You hold: ♠xxx ♥xx ♦xxx ♣AKJxx

North East South West 1NT Pass 2♣ ?

Double. You want a club lead.

Do not double with clubs looking like this: Kxxxxx

Also use the lead-directing double when the opponents go through Ace asking. If the response to 4♣or 4NT is a suit you want led, double!

Important! You hold: ♠xx ♥xxx ♦KQ10x ♣xxxx

West North East South (you) 1♠ Pass 2♥ Pass

3♠ Pass 3♠ Pass

4NT Pass 5♦ ?

Double 5♦ to alert partner you want a diamond lead against an eventual spade contract. At the four level or higher a double of an artificial bid can be made with a strong three or four card suit eg KQx(x). If you don't double 5♦, partner is likely to take the inference that you didn't want a diamond lead.
