DIA Wins FAB Award for "Best Food andBeverage-Related Innovation"

Crú Food & Wine Bar Named "Best Airport Wine Bar"

The Moodie Report (a self-described e-zine) recently held its third annual AirportFood & Beverage Awards, honoring Denver International Airport's Premium ValueConcessions (PVC) Program with Best Food and Beverage-Related Innovation.

The award, announced Oct. 2 in Dubai, recognizes DIA's new approach to retaining thebest shopping and dining concepts for airtravelers. The PVC program gives the airport's

top-performing concession tenants the opportunity to directly negotiate newcontracts in lieu of going through the request for proposal process. Programperformance is measured by sales volume, contract compliance and customerservice. DIA collaborated with many of its tenants to design and develop the PVCprogram, which officially started on Aug. 1, 2012.

Crú Food & Wine Bar, operated at DIA by HMSHost, was named the Best Airport WineBar at the awards ceremony. Crú, which is has a location on Concourse B at DIA,opened in December 2012. Crú Food & Wine Bar has been the annual recipient of theAward of Excellence by Wine Spectator magazine since 2004.

Competition Honors Hotel and Transit CenterProgram's Use of Building Information ModelingAutodesk's Excellence in Infrastructure Competition has awarded design companyHNTB first place for exemplary use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) for civilinfrastructure on DIA's Hotel and Transit Center Program (formerly known as theSouth Terminal Redevelopment Program).

"Each of the winning projects offers a model forthe application of forward-thinking Building

Information Modeling workflows and technologies for infrastructure projects," saidLisa Campbell, Autodesk vice president for industry strategy and marketing. "Firstplace HNTB, for example, employed Autodesk technologies to drive a BIM processfrom early stages of planning through design, and now into construction—engaging alarge group of stakeholders from the airport to a host of design and engineering firmsworking to make this project successful."

CGarchitect, an online magazine and end-usercommunity for architectural visualization anddesign professionals, managed the annualcompetition, which was co-sponsored byAutodesk (produces 3-D design software) and Hewlett Packard. A jury of industryexperts selected the winners from submissions covering a wide range oftransportation, land development, urban planning, water/wastewater and energy-related projects.

HNTB provides planning, design, program delivery and construction managementservices.

Northern Lights: Adventure Tourism in Reykjavikand Fort McMurrayEntrancing, mystifying, awe inspiring—whatever adjective you want to use to describethe northern lights, or aurorae borealis, they are worth a journey.

A manifestation of color, seen in bands of light, an aurora borealis is most oftenvisible in skies in northern latitudes. (Conversely, an aurora australis is seen in theSouthern Hemisphere as you travel toward the South Pole.)

Aurora sightings may be only a nonstop flight away. Two of DIA's newer internationaldestinations are known for northern light displays: Reykjavik, Iceland, and FortMcMurray, Canada. Take Icelandair to reach Reykjavik and United Airlines to fly toFort McMurray. Both cities are many degrees higher in latitude than Denver and offera better chance for a northern light experience than in Colorado. Winter may be thebest time to go because nighttime hours are long up north.

Iceland is a great place to see the northern lights. At a latitude of 64 degrees north, it is nearthe polar region, where the aurora phenomena are more likely to be seen.

Catching the light show can be problematic. Aurorae are the result of specific solaractivity that is difficult to predict.

A clear winter night in Iceland might be visited by the northern lights.

The sun triggers an aurora borealis when it explosively ejects massive volumes ofsuper-heated gas—full of electrons and protons—from its corona. These particlestravel faster than the perpetual solar wind, as fast as 2 million miles per hour. Ifthey head toward Earth, they rendezvous with the Earth's magnetosphere, ormagnetic field, which surrounds the planet. "This field is invisible," explains StenOdenwald in his book The 23rd Cycle, Learning to Live with a Stormy Star. "If youcould see its shape, it would make Earth look like a comet with a long magnetic 'tail'stretching a million miles behind Earth in the opposite direction of the sun."

When the solar particles reach Earth, they flow along the planet's magnetic field linestoward the poles and collide with oxygen atoms and nitrogen molecules in the upperatmosphere, releasing energy in the form of colored light.

These cosmic phenomena have beenaround since Earth began. But the

earliest mention in the historical recordcomes from Babylon. Astronomers, usingclay tablets, recorded sightings ofnorthern lights during the reign of KingNebuchadnezzar II—around 568 and 567B.C.

Aurora color depends upon altitude andthe chemical composition of Earth's atmosphere at that altitude. Oxygen atoms 120miles high produce red light; oxygen atoms at an elevation of 60 miles give off greenlight; and nitrogen molecules emit purples and blues.

Ghouls Garner Grins and Gasps at DIA

Travelers at DIA were surprised on Halloween when a hoard of zombies took over partof the Jeppesen Terminal atrium with flash mob dance performances of MichaelJackson's "Thriller."

Dancers from the Littleton-based Overstreet Dance Gallery formed a flash mob in the JeppesenTerminal atrium on Halloween and performed the choreography of Michael Jackson's "Thriller,"the title song of a music video he released in 1983.

Dozens of dancers in zombie-themed costumes and makeup took part in the flashmob, which was organized by DIA's Art and Culture Program in conjunction with theLittleton-based Overstreet Dance Gallery. Passengers arriving in the terminal, airport

employees and other visitors were treated to two performances of the classic"Thriller" dance, based on the 1983 hit music video that is celebrating its 30thanniversary this year.

Watch video of the performance by clicking here.

National Fossil DayNational Fossil Day was Oct. 19. This year it had added significance for DenverInternational Airport because as the foundations for the new hotel and commuter railstation were being excavated, construction workers found fossils of plants.

DIA employees view and photograph some of the fossils found when construction workersexcavated land for building the new hotel and transit center foundations.

Fossils are not new to DIA. Numerous preserved fronds of sub-tropical palm speciesand leaves of the Katsura tree (now found only in China and Japan) and ancestralsycamore leaves were uncovered when the airport was built, indicating this area hada sub-tropical climate during the Paleocene.

Air New Zealand Safety VideosIt is not uncommon for airlines to brief their passengers about flight safety with avideo presentation. Some carriers have found new ways to get the travelers'attention.

For example, Air New Zealand has produced some clever presentations, including onefeaturing Betty White and another inspired by Middle Earth. Watch these Air NewZealand videos on YouTube.
