Do you know Unaffiliated Jews in Chester County, Montgomery County

and Delaware County?

Celebrate with an Oneg

Do you have Jewish friends or acquaintances who live in Chester County, Montgomery County and Delaware County who are not already members of a synagogue? If you do, why not invite them to one of the upcoming events at Or Shalom. They may have a good time and decide to come back. They may have such a good time that they decide to become members themselves. According to a recent survey by the Jewish Federation, there are many, many unaffiliated Jews in Chester county. We’d love to contact them, but don’t know who they are. You can help. Todah rabah!

The President’s Column

What have you created today?

First, I would like to start off with a big Or Shalom Congratulations to Rabbi Knapp on her engagement to Jonathan. I cannot think of better news this new year. I hope you all can join me personally in congratulating them on this simcha. When I say personally, I mean show up to service and tell them face to face. I am sure that will mean more to them then receiving a text, email, or card. I am sure it would even mean more to them then if you made a donation to the synagogue in their honor (by the way … these are not mutually exclusive).

Next, I would like to thank Dan Bernick for organizing the Men’s Club brunch in January and Larry Bilker for his 4th presentation on the newest technology. This is always a great presentation with great friends and great food. I am really curious why I did not see you at the presentation. I find it interesting because we continue to survey the congregation and one of the consistent responses relates to have a greater number of social events. What can be more social then hanging out with friends, sharing a good meal, and good conversation? Is it be-cause it is too expensive? Should we lower the $10 price tag and just covers the food? Is it because you did not hear about it at services, in the monthly newsletter, or the weekly email blast? Was it because none of your friends were going and you do not want to meet any new friends? Was it too early in the day or too late in the day? This may come off as a little snarky but I really would like to know what we can do to build greater community at Or Shalom. People put a lot of effort into organizing these events and it is a little disheartening when the attendance is low. Especially, when it is a presenter and topic that has received such positive feedback in the past. Please give this topic a little thought and let me or another board member know what we can do to help promote attendance and community involvement. I would hate to see these types of events disappear because people cannot get up off their sofa.

Raise your hand if you enjoy the cool refreshing feel of air conditioning in the summer time. I know it is hard to think about with all the cold weather outside this winter. I know I like air conditioning. Especially during a long service on a hot day. In case you are not aware one of the Air Conditioners at shul broke last summer and we have been requesting donations to get a replacement. At this point we are less then half way to our goal or $7,000 to replace the A/C unit. How can you help? I am glad to asked that question. Please consider making a donation. I can assure you that we run a very tight financial ship at Or Shalom and the A/C will NOT be replaced until we have received the funds to pay for the replacement. I appreciate all of you for your contribution to the Or Shalom community. We would not be here without you and I look forward to seeing you all at shul. Remember, it does not have to be a high holiday. We are there for you every Friday and Saturday evening. In G-d we trust. Andy

Rabbi’s Reflections

On January 5, we began our newest cycle of studying the Talmud known as Daf Yomi. But first what is Talmud?

Talmud is the central text to rabbinic Judaism; it is the primary source for Jewish religious law (halakha) and theology. There are two versions of Talmud: the Tamud Bavli (Talmud written outside the land of Israel) and the Talmud Yerushalmi (Talmud written within Israel). The most popular Talmud to study is the Bavli.

The Talmud consists of the Mishnah (dating to 200 common era) and the Gemara (conversations and debates which occurred from roughly before the common era (BC) to 5th-century common era). The Gemara consists of recorded discussions and debates all based on the Mishnah with LOTS of sidebars! It is written in a mix of Aramaic and Hebrew and consists of complex phrases that necessitate studying the text rather than just reading it.

When I began rabbinical school I was terrified of Talmud but as the years go by, and more importantly, the more I study it, I have grown to deeply love it. I have come to love it like a puzzle. When all the pieces are spread out I have no idea how they are going to fit together but then bit by bit, piece by piece, I put it together, and soon I start to see the bigger picture.

Daf Yomi began in 1923 by Rabbi Meir Shapiro as an effort to bring Jews together around a sacred text by studying one page of Talmud a day. Because the Talmud is 2,711 pages it takes about 7.5 years to study the entire Talmud. So when January 5th came along folks were excited to jump in and start another cycle from the beginning. This cycle marks the 14th cycle of Daf Yomi.

I encourage everyone to look into Daf Yomi and start learning a bit about Talmud. A good first place is the book: The Essential Talmud by Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz. This gives a good background to Talmud, it’s structure and content, and method. Believe me when I say, Talmud is accessible to everyone, the key is to study it together, with another person or a class.

If you’d like to start following along in Daf Yomi, a very accessible and short resource is Daf Yomi for Everyone by My Jewish Learning. They send out a summary of the page every day (know that it is a very short summary so it does not teach everything on the page) and has a discussion group on Facebook. For those looking for a little more intense study and have a solid foundation in Talmud check out Daf Yomi for Women (it is not just for women!). The daily class is taught by Michelle Cohen Farber, a brilliant Talmudist who explains things very well, albeit quite fast. This recording is 45 minutes. There are many other ways to engage with the text, please let me know if you are interested. And most importantly, if people are interested in a Talmud 101 class I would be very excited to teach it starting in late Spring!

B’hatzlacha (good luck) studying, Rabbi Kami

February is Jewish Disability Awareness & Inclusion Month (JDAIM) - a unified national initiative to raise disability awareness AND support efforts to foster inclusion within the Jewish community. Please join us after services on Friday, February 7th, as we welcome Alanna Raffel. Alanna is a speaker from Whole Community Inclusion, an initiative supported by the Jewish Special Needs Consortium of Greater Philadelphia. Alanna Raffel is an occupational therapist and accessibility consultant. She graduated from the University of Maryland with dual degrees in Psychology and Dance and from Thomas Jefferson University with a Master of Science in Occupational Therapy. She has worked as an occupational therapist in acute rehab, early intervention ages 3 to 5, outpatient, and school-based settings. Alanna has facilitated accessibility in a variety of ways including autism-friendly Broadway performances in New York City, open captioning at People's Light in Malvern, and organization mapping events to collect data on physical accessibility. Her company, Ac-cess Point, strives to increase inclusion in Philadelphia and beyond by advocating for access, creating solutions, and promoting aware-ness of accessible opportunities for people with disabilities and their friends and family.

sisterhood news

Hi, I was away on the day of the Or Shalom Chanukah party and had to miss it. I want to thank Mindy Markovitz and Joel Stern for all their help to make it a success. Joel was kind enough to do the shopping, and Mindy did some cooking and the prep work. Thanks also, to everyone else who helped out. Our next Sisterhood event is Sunday, February 23rd. Join us from 10-12 when a beekeeper will be speaking about his beehives and will bring honey samples to try and some for purchase. A bagel & lox brunch will be served for a $10 donation. Don’t forget to rsvp! On Thursday, March 5, we will be preparing the Shalach Manot bags at 11:00. Please let me know if you can help. Janet will be hosting our book club in March. Have you read a book lately with a Jewish theme that you recommend? We are open to suggestions. Let me know. Mindy Bernstein Sisterhood President

Larisa Averbakh

Education Director Or Tamid

As we opened the new year, and the new semester of Jewish studies, with a delicious pancake breakfast, graciously cooked for us by a CBENT Men’s Club, I have realized that breakfast was the only meal of the day I haven’t had yet with Or Tamid students, parents, and teachers! And since this milestone was passed, I feel like I am no stranger anymore, but a fully accepted and integrated member of the Or Tamid Family! We had a very nice discussion with parents right after the breakfast, and everybody agreed that we should meet more often. So I would like to invite you to the next meeting with other parents, clergy, and yours truly, on Sunday, February 9, at 10 am. That will allow parents in attendance to join our children for a Tu BiShvat Seder, a celebration of the New Year of the Trees, that starts at 10:45 am, immediately following the meeting. You can even quietly eavesdrop on a Purim spiel rehearsal at 11:45 am, if you wish. As always your opinions and input on various aspects of your children’s Jewish education. What is your feedback on our new electives offered to Hebrew High? How can we boost attendance at Junior Congregation and regular Shabbat services at CBENT and Or Shalom? What should we do to foster friendship and bonding between our children, which extracurricular programs and activities would spark their interest and excitement? Those are just a few from an inexhaustible list of questions, that I would like to ask you… Or Tamid Religious school is a Sacred partnership between families, clergy, and educators. Only in collaboration we can achieve our lofty goals, only together we can insure that we are passing Jewish values and traditions l’dor vador, from generation to generation. Hope to see you all on February 9

th,

Morah Larisa

Class Service The Or Tamid Dalet-Hay class and the Or Shalom Advanced Tuesday class did a great job in helping to lead the January 25th Or Shalom Saturday Morning Service. Ian Shapiro carried the Torah and Finn Peveto cheerfully assisted in leading prayers. The Daley-Hey teacher Miriam Leshem beautifully chanted the Haftarah while the students sat on the bima following along in Etz Hayim. Thank you, Mindy, for having sisterhood provide a lovely Kiddish Luncheon that was enjoyed by eve-ryone. Or Shalom Education Committee Meeting A meeting was held on Sunday, January 26th and the parents and grandparents agreed that the Or Shalom School is a no homework school. On Tuesday the emphasis is Hebrew, Torah, holidays and prayer. On Sundays Or Shalom joins with CBENT forming the Or Tamid School and special events and projects are added to the curriculum. The children enjoy the special events and projects that the school director, Larisa provides. The focus now is the Purim play. In order to schedule participation, the parents and grandparents requested that they be given several weeks’ notice with details for the activity since they have limited time and many obligations. Sometimes events may change or be added. Future Events and volunteers are needed. There will be an Or Tamid Tu B’Shevat Seder on Sunday, February 9th at CBENT. Help is a need to set up starting at 9am. The Seder will begin at about 11am.You are invited to participate. Please let me know if you can help. Volunteers are needed for setting up and helping during the Purim Carnival. It will be held Sunday Morning, February 8th at CBENT. Set up will take place Saturday night, February 7th after Havdalah. Havdalah will be at 6:41pm. Sunday March 8th is the first day of Daylight-Saving Time. Clocks are set one hour ahead. There will be a basket lottery at the Purim Carnival. Thank you, Shapiro Family and Melissa for volun-teering to donate baskets. Help will be needed for the Model Seder which will take place at CBENT. Log B’Omer and Confirmation will take place at Or Shalom. Please volunteer and let me know when and how. Kul Tov, Alice Presley, Ph.D. Chair of the Education Committeeman

Students in 7th-12th grades will have the opportunity to meet with a Holocaust Survivor in a smaller group setting and then all groups will come together to hear from an inspiring keynote speaker. The program, which includes transportation and a light breakfast, is provided free of charge by the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia's Jewish Community Relations Council. Please see the attached the form to make your school's reservation for the program. The Conversation program takes place prior to the Philadelphia Community Memorial Ceremony for the Six Million Jewish Martyrs held at 1:00 p.m. that same afternoon at the Holocaust Memorial at 16th and the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. Each year hundreds of members of our community memorialize those who died in the Holocaust. As the years go by, the Survivor community is decreasing and so there is an increased responsibility on the rest of the Jewish community to honor and recall those who perished at the hands of the Nazis. We strongly encourage you to have your students stay for the beginning of the Ceremony to participate in the March of the Generations. It has great meaning to those Survivors present at the Ceremony.
