CHALLENGE OF TRACKING HORSES DISCUSSED IN NYBy Tom LaMarra

The challenges of tracking retired racehorses were

evident in the results of research discussed Aug.

30 during a New York State Gaming Commission

aftercare summit in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

The summit, designed to provide updates on

current efforts and solicit ideas on raising aware-

ness—and more funding—for aftercare, followed

one held last year in New York. One of the projects

started last year was an attempt to confirm the

status of horses after their last races at New York's

four Thoroughbred tracks.

"Last year we provided an update on what the

numbers are and what the needs are," said Jack

Knowlton, operating manager of Sackatoga Stable

and a member of the New York State Task Force on

Retired Racehorses. "I'm still frustrated we're not

able to get where we want to get."

With assistance from The Jockey Club, the task

force identified more than 3,800 New York Thor-

oughbreds that raced in the state from 2010-12 but

never raced again. Of the total, 1,325 last raced at

Finger Lakes Gaming & Racetrack, 434 at Aqueduct

Racetrack, 387 at Belmont Park, and 126 at Saratoga

Race Course. About 20% ran their last races at tracks

outside of New York.

Thus far, Knowlton said 1,082—a little more than

27% of the total—have known status. Of that group

54% are broodmares, 29% are deceased, and almost

15% fall into the categories of retired or adopted. Of

the more than 2,800 whose status remains unknown,

they raced for about 900 trainers; some had one-

horse stables while one had more than 90 horses in

training, Knowlton said.

Of the horses accounted for, 58% were in New

York and 42% out of state

"There are a lot of challenges in finding out where

(the horses) went," Knowlton said. "This gives you

a flavor of the breadth of where these horses are.

We're looking for ideas on how, on an ongoing basis,

to track horses as they leave the racetrack so we can

really understand where they are going."

It was noted during the summit that beginning

in 2017 microchips will be mandatory for any Thor-

oughbred registered with The Jockey Club; the

program is voluntary this year but requests for

microchips were made for about three-quarters of

registrations. For aftercare purposes, the chips will

aid in identifying horses when they are found but

can't take the place of responsible horse ownership

as noted during the meeting.

Tom Gallo III, president of the New York Thorough-

bred Breeders, a farm owner, and managing of owner

of Parting Glass Racing, said viewing a NYSGC video on

aftercare should be mandatory not only for trainers

but for owners.

"We are in a modern era, and a lot of people have

a need for immediate gratification," Gallo said. "A

lot of owners (today) aren't in it for the love of the

horse. When I talk (to people interested in partner-

ships) I tell them, 'You don't own a horse until its last

race. You own a horse until it is properly placed in an

accredited (aftercare program)." BH

Six stakes and total purses of $845,000 for 11 races

will be offered Sept. 3 when Parx Racing returns

from a more than three-week break with a program

for mostly Pennsylvania-bred runners.

The Saturday card, dubbed "Pennsylvania's Day

at the Races," includes one open race—the $150,000

Princess of Sylmar Stakes, which attracted Cash is

King's locally based Cathryn Sophia, winner of the

Longines Kentucky Oaks (gr. I). The one-mile Prin-

cess of Sylmar for 3-year-old fillies serves as a prep

for the $1 million Cotillion Stakes (gr. I), a 1 1/8-mile

event for 3-year-old fillies Sept. 24 at Parx.

There are five $100,000 Pennsylvania-bred stakes

on the Sept. 3 card, including the Roanoke for 3-year-

olds and up at 1 1/16 miles. The race attracted Some-

day Farm's grade III winner Res Judicata and two

from the Graham Motion barn: The Elkstone Group's

Edge of Reality, winner of the Robellino Stakes for

state-breds on turf at Hollywood Casino at Penn

National Race Course last time out, and Augustin Sta-

ble's Forward Thinker, a regular in state-bred stakes

who returns to dirt for the first time since July 2014.

The annual celebration of the Pennsylvania-bred

program comes as the Pennsylvania Horse Breeders

Association works to restore breeder and stallion

award payments—about $6 million so far—that have

been held up for about seven months because of

problematic language in a new horseracing reform

VINMAR ANNOUNCES DISPERSAL, LISTS FARMBy Ron Mitchell

When Marc Ferrell built VinMar Farm, it was

designed with "the idea that we would

provide the best environment for broodmares,

weanlings, yearlings, or horses in need of some

rest and relaxation from racing," according to the

farm's website.

Now, six years after starting the state-of-the-

art nursery near Versailles, Ky., Ferrell has decid-

ed to leave the Thoroughbred industry, perhaps

temporarily, to pursue a new business interest.

He is dispersing the 189-acre farm and its horses.

VinMar announced it will offer a complete

dispersal of its Thoroughbred holdings during

Keeneland’s September yearling sale, to be held

Sept. 12-25, and November breeding stock sale,

which begins Nov. 8.

Archie St. George’s St. George Sales will act

as agent for the dispersal. Included are year-

lings by Quality Road, Super Saver, Violence, and

Shanghai Bobby and weanlings by top sires Uncle

Mo, Tale of the Cat, and Lookin At Lucky. Young

broodmares in foal to proven stallions Awesome

Again, Mizzen Mast, and Quality Road also will be

part of the dispersal.

The farm is listed for sale through Kirkpatrick

and Company, with an asking price of $3,848,000.

Ferrell first became acquainted with Thor-

oughbred racing at a young age in Arcadia, Calif.,

home of Santa Anita Park. Shortly before he and

a friend were going to graduate from high school,

they enrolled in Santa Anita’s “hotwalking school,”

a course that taught the basics of horsemanship

needed to do basic chores around the barn.

Once qualified to be a hotwalker, Ferrell was

assigned to Hall of Famer Jack Van Berg’s barn

during the same year Alysheba won the Kentucky

Derby (gr. I) and Preakness Stakes (gr. I), and

before long was promoted to groom; he traveled

to nearly all of the California tracks.

Ferrell eventually left the track and in the early

2000s established a health care company that

bought distressed hospitals and reopened them.

He returned to the horse industry after selling

that company in 2010, establishing a racing sta-

ble and building VinMar.

Among the horses campaigned by Ferrell have

been grade II winners Madame Cactus and Sec-

ond Summer (in partnership), grade III winners

Goldsville and Called to Serve, as well as stakes

winners Fiddlers Afleet and Well Deserved.

Ferrell said the decision to disperse came

about because he has established another health

care company based in Washington, D.C., and

those responsibilities along with him and his

wife, Vinka, caring for seven children (ages one

through 22) left little time for the farm or horse

racing.

"It is a bittersweet decision," said Ferrell, who

indicated he might return as an owner in the

future. "It’s a business I really enjoyed but it got

to point where I wasn’t able to participate in the

enjoyment part of it. I wasn’t able to spend time

at the farm or at the sales. It is very time-con-

suming if you want to do it right. We just felt it

was time to take step back and focus on some

other things. I would say at some point we will

get back in the business." BH

MULLING STUD PLANS FOR FLINTSHIRE, ARROGATEBy Eric Mitchell

Juddmonte Farms is holding a hot hand right now

with brilliant racehorses Flintshire and Arrogate,

who both delivered commanding performances Aug.

27 at Saratoga Race Course. These runners also pos-

sess strong potential as future stallions.

Specific stud plans for both horses don't exist at

the moment, according to Garrett O'Rourke, manager

of Juddmonte's American division—but with Flint-

shire now 6, a decision will be made sooner on his

stallion career than with 3-year-old Arrogate.

"We have had a lot of patience with Arrogate and

it's coming to fruition," said O'Rourke of the Unbri-

dled's Song colt who won the Travers Stakes (gr. I)

by 13 1/2 lengths in track-record time. "With a horse

of his size and stature, you have hopes for a lot of

excitement ahead. Prince Khalid (Abdullah) has never

been shy in the past about racing older horses. There

are plenty of big dirt races on offer, especially

next spring, so we would have to recommend rac-

ing him next year if everything is 100%. Everyone

benefits."

Regarding Flintshire, O'Rourke said serious

conversations about his stud career won't begin

until closer to the Breeders' Cup World Champi-

onships, where Flintshire earned a short-priced

spot in the Longines Breeders' Cup Turf (gr. IT) by

taking the Longines Sword Dancer Stakes (gr. IT)

in 2:23.45, only a fifth of a second off the 1 1/2-

mile track record set by Awad in 1997. The Sword

Dancer is a Breeders' Cup Challenge "Win and

You're In" event.

"His performances so far are definitely de-

serving of a championship; that was the whole

goal of bringing him over here and getting him

the accolades he's proven to deserve," O'Rourke

said. "Unfortunately over there (Europe) he kept

running into horses like Treve and Golden Horn.

There probably should have been an Arc with his

name on it but hopeful there a championship

with his name on it over here."

Flintshire finished second to Treve in the Qatar

Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (Fr-I) in 2014 and sec-

ond to Golden Horn in the 2015 Arc. The Sword

Dancer was Flintshire's third start this year and

third graded stakes win. He previously won the Knob

Creek Manhattan Stakes (gr. IT) and the Bowling

Green Stakes (gr. IIT).

Regarding how Flintshire would fit into Juddmon-

te's breeding program, O'Rourke said any horse of

his caliber is a good fit.

"Anytime you can take a horse who is that brilliant,

that consistent, and that sound and consider what

magnificent genes he must have... I think you are

never afraid to add more of those genes into your

broodmare band," he said. "I don't think you can go

far wrong with that kind of a stud."

As for the appetite American breeders have for

turf sires, O'Rourke said it seems to be growing.

"The top European breeders used to keep mares

here especially to breed to the top turf stallions, back

to when we had Irish River and Riverman and Nijin-

sky," he said. "But they've thinned out. Now people

are starting to realize the supply may be beneath

what the demand might be, so they are happy to look

at those turf stallions again." BH

Three horses sold for six figures at the second edi-

tion of the Barretts select yearling sale, held Aug.

30 at Del Mar. A California-bred daughter of Smiling

Tiger brought the highest price of $130,000, while a

Cal-bred son of Tribal Rule was the top-priced colt at

$115,000.

Barretts conducted its inaugural select yearling

sale last year after the Del Mar races, and for 2016

the company switched to a dark day. That, plus

what sale officials termed "a catalog with more sire

power," led to increases at the top end, with overall

figures virtually even with 2015.

In both years, 44 yearlings sold, grossing

$1,635,000 and averaging $37,159 this year. In 2015,

the gross was $1,629,000 with a $37,023 average.

The median dropped to $27,500 in 2016, from

$32,500 in 2015. Of the 67 through the ring this year,

23 did not sell, for a buy-back rate of 34%

"Knowing that the market is so haywire at the

moment, we felt if we stayed even, it would be a win

for us," said Kim Lloyd, general manager of Barretts.

"Considering the circumstances, we felt like we came

out very good today."

In 2015 the sale toppers were a pair that sold for

$90,000 each. Five horses this year went through

for six-figure bids, two of those not selling. Hip #42,

a son of Lucky Pulpit, was a buy-back at $145,000,

and hip #24, a son of Union Rags, did not sell at

$120,000.

"The median was down because the lower-end

horses sold a little lower this year," said Lloyd. "The

higher-end horses brought all the money. We were

pleased with the high end because it gives people

the confidence to bring in a marketable, commercial

type of horse."

Sue Greene's Woodbridge Farm consigned the

$130,000 sale topper, Hip 68. The filly is from the

first crop of millionaire Smiling Tiger and is out of the

Pentelicus mare Chanceofalifetime. Jeff Bonde, who

trained Smiling Tiger, bought the sale topper. She

is a half sister to stakes winner Kelly's Princess and

three stakes-placed runners.

Trainer Dan Hendricks successfully bid $115,000

on behalf of Super Horse for Hip 16. Consigned by

Mary Knight, the colt is by deceased Tribal Rule,

who regularly ranks high on California sire lists. The

youngster is out of the Thunder Gulch mare Marala-

go, a daughter of multiple graded winner Tricky

Squaw and a half sister to stakes winner Tricky Six.

The third horse to sell for six figures was Hip 59,

from the consignment of G.W. Thomas' Willow Tree

Farm. Gary Hartunian's Rockingham Ranch went to

$110,000 for the Cal-bred colt, a son of Dialed In out

of the Siphon mare Boro. The colt is from the family

of $946,190-earner Gene's Lady. BH

LOCH LEA'S DR. GORDON LAYTON PASSES AT 84By Blood-Horse Staff

Dr. Gordon E. Layton, prominent Central Kentucky

equine veterinarian, Thoroughbred breeder, and

co-owner of Loch Lea Farm, died Aug 28 at his home

in Paris, Ky. He was 84.

Layton practiced veterinary medicine from 1956

until his retirement following a heart attack in 2008.

In 1979 Layton became the first equine veterinari-

an in North America to use an ultrasound machine in

equine practice to determine early pregnancy status

of mares. Among the many farms he worked for were

Claiborne Farm, Runnymede Farm, Drymon Farm,

Golden Chance Farm, Forest Retreat Farm, Stoner

Creek Stud, Hidaway Farm, and Hillside Farm.

Layton and his wife, Lyn, founded Loch Lea Farm

in 1964, which was managed by their son Jim Layton

since 1980. Loch Lea Farm raised many top Thor-

oughbred racehorses, including Racing Hall of Fame

member Bold 'n Determined, champion 2-year-old fil-

ly Stardom Bound, English and French champion and

Epsom Derby (Eng-I) winner Teenoso, English cham-

pion 2-year-old filly Cherry Hinton, and

French group I winner Imperial Beauty.

Layton was proud of his family

heritage of working with horses for

more than 300 years in England, Can-

ada, and the U.S. and that his father

founded the first blacksmith school in

the U.S. at Cornell University. He was

active in helping young people interest-

ed in agriculture and mentored several

budding young veterinarians in the

1980s and ’90s.

Honored to be mentored by late

Claiborne Farm resident veterinarian

Col. (Dr.) Floyd Sager, he was the back-

up veterinarian at the Hancock family's

farm near Paris for 30 years and cared

for many equine stars there. He was,

however, most proud that he never

missed a call when needed.

Layton learned many old-time remedies from

Sager, but was also progressive in adopting new

management techniques based upon his keen pow-

ers of observation.

Layton served on the Kentucky Board of Veteri-

nary Examiners, was awarded a Lifetime member-

ship of the Kentucky Veterinary Medical Association,

received the KVMA Distinguished Service Award, was

a member of the KVMA Foundation Board, and Hon-

or Roll Member of the American Veterinary Medical

Association. He was founding president of Mountain

Pleasure Horse Association.

Layton graduated from New York State Veterinary

College at Cornell in 1956 with Doctor of Veterinary

Medicine degree.

Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. EDT Aug. 31 at Hin-

ton-Turner Funeral Home, in Paris, Ky., and Sept. 2 at

1 p.m. with a celebration of life at 2 p.m., also at Hin-

ton-Turner. Expressions of sympathy can be made to

the Alzheimer's Association or the Hopewell Museum

Grade I winner Rich Tapestry disappointed in a

gate trial Aug. 30, putting his anticipated career

finale in the inaugural $608,000 Keeneland Korea

Sprint Sept. 11 in South Korea in question.

Trainer Michael Chang's 8-year-old stable star

faded to finish sixth of 12 in the six-furlong trial on

the all-weather track at Sha Tin.

The Holy Roman Emperor gelding scored a histor-

ic first for a Hong Kong-trained horse when he won

the 2014 Santa Anita Sprint Championship (gr. I). In

his most recent start he was a lackluster seventh in

the Dubai Golden Shaheen (UAE-I). He emerged from

the race with a soundness issue.

"He injured the joint in Dubai and I gave him three

months off," said Chang. "I started him back in late June

and he's been working up to this race in Korea, but this

morning he was just feeling a bit sore again. He was

feeling a little soreness in his joint so we will give him

some medication today and then see how he is after

the weekend. If he passes the vet we will go on to Ko-

rea, but if he is not himself then we will not take him.

"Hopefully he will still make it, but if not, he's done

his job. If he does not go to Korea, I'll recommend to

the owners that we retire him." BH

conditions at Saratoga Race Course are not to blame for

14 equine deaths during the track's current meet.

NYSGC executive director Robert Williams, who present-

ed a brief overview during a board meeting in Saratoga

Springs, N.Y., said the number of deaths is similar to equine

fatalities during the 2014 and 2015 summer meets.

The state's Equine Safety Review Board, a panel whose

members include NYSGC equine medication director Dr.

Scott Palmer, is expected to publish its findings on the

equine deaths in the coming weeks. The panel has been

meeting weekly, Williams said, to discuss the Saratoga

fatalities.

Williams said he has been informed that a review of

various track-related issues, including cushion depth,

moisture content, and training times, "indicate that the

2016 main track surface meets standards consistent with

previous years, thereby making track condition unlikely as

a contributing factor for 2016 Saratoga equine fatalities."

Williams said the 14 fatalities since May 30 at Saratoga

included 10 exercise-related musculoskeletal injuries, six of

which were racing-related and four training-related. One

was deemed an "accidental death" due to a fall, one from

an infectious disease, and two from sudden cardiac deaths

following exercise. There were 13 in 2015 and 14 in 2014.

The six training-related fatalities occurred on the main track

and at the Oklahoma Training Track, the NYSGC said.

The New York Racing Association also brought in

racing surface expert Dr. Mick Peterson to review the

Saratoga track.

"While any equine fatality on the grounds of a New

York track is tragic and fully investigated, this spike has

been the cause of great concern for the commission

staff and the New York Racing Association," Williams

told NYSGC members. BH

ARROGATE REFLECTS LEGACY OF UNBRIDLED'S SONG

The line applies to a totally different icon, but Neil

Young's "...gone, but not forgotten..." is what

came to mind when I pondered the recent legacy

of Unbridled's Song. The captivating gray passed on

July 26, 2013, at age 20. Since then he's been rep-

resented by 20 individual stakes winners, eight of

them grade I, including champion 3-year-old male

Will Take Charge; last year's Woodward Stakes (gr.

I) and Las Vegas Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (gr. I) hero

Liam's Map; and on Aug. 27, the stunning Travers

Stakes (gr. I) scorer,

Arrogate.

Injuries prevent-

ed Unbridled's Song

from fully realizing his

potential as a run-

ner, but at his best,

in efforts such as the

Florida Derby (gr. I)

and the Wood Me-

morial Stakes (gr. I),

he appeared almost

invincible. That is also

a pretty fair descrip-

tion of the impression Arrogate created.

Making only his fifth start and his first in stakes

competition, he vividly recalled his sire as he towed

the field through a swift opening six furlongs in

1:10.74. Given a breather through the next quarter,

Arrogate re-broke to storm through the last two

furlongs in :23.84, opening up a winning margin of

13 1/2 lengths. The final time, officially 1:59.36, was

a track record and lowered General Assembly's

Travers Stakes record that had stood since 1979.

A 2013 Travers victory provided the springboard

for Will Take Charge to become the first 3-year-old

since Skip Away in 1996 to earn a division Eclipse

Award without capturing a Triple Crown event.

Arrogate may have to win the Breeders' Cup Classic

(gr. I)—a race in which Will Take Charge was beaten

a nose—to become the second son of Unbridled's

Song to achieve the feat, but it goes without saying

if he turns up in the same shape, he will take some

beating.

Arrogate's dam, Bubbler, was a smart performer

in her own right, winning six of nine starts, including

stakes at Sam Houston (twice), Lone Star, and Fair

Grounds Race Course & Slots, and taking third in

the Ouija Board Distaff Handicap (gr. IIIT). What's

more, she has a pedigree made to fit Unbridled's

Song. A half sister to a stakes winner by Unbridled,

the sire of Unbridled's Song, she's a daughter of

Distorted Humor, who's sired two stakes winners

from Unbridled's Song mares and who is a son of

Forty Niner, a horse found in the broodmare sire

line of Liam's Map and as sire of the second dam

of Unbridled's Song's three-time grade I winner

Zensational.
