STREET CRY COLT TOPS AT $1.4MBy Tom LaMarra
Three yearlings surpassed the $1-million mark
during the two-day Fasig-Tipton Saratoga select
yearling sale, and the second-highest price of the
three—$1.4 million—was paid for Hip 168, a colt by
the late stallion Street Cry during the sale's second
session Aug. 11.
Consigned by Paramount Sales, the session-top-
ping colt was purchased by Sheikh Mohammed's
bloodstock manager John Ferguson.
"It is very hard to breed a good horse," Fergu-
son said. "He's handsome and as good-looking as
any of the horses here. The breeders deserve to
get paid."
Ann Bakhaus, owner of Keene Ridge Farm near
Lexington, co-bred the dark bay or brown colt with
Sheikh Mohammed's Darley breeding operation.
The colt's second dam, Cuando Quiere, produced
nine winners including Flower Bowl Invitational (gr.
IT) winner Honey Ryder, who banked more than
$2.27 million. The sale of the $1.4 million colt fueled
a more than 66% increase in gross for the session
compared with the same session in 2014. BH

YOUNG BUYS MALIBU MOON FILLYBy Ian Tapp
Agent Steve Young paid $800,000 for the top-
priced filly during Fasig-Tipton Saratoga's Aug.
11 second session. Consigned as Hip 170, the
daughter of Malibu Moon—Red Hot Bertie sold
from the consignment of Hill'n' Dale Sales Agency.
"She was at the top of our list," said Young, who
declined to name his client but indicated the filly
was bought to race. "She basically sold herself every
time I went and saw her. She's smart, she's a very
good mover, and I couldn't be happier with her.
"I probably went to see her four times, but I
look at horses more than some people do," he
said. "Some people look at horses multiple times
to knock them or to get off of them. When I go

SARATOGA SALE POSTS MAJOR GAINSBy Tom LaMarra
Boyd Browning wasn't speechless, but he said he
was almost speechless when the numbers were
tallied for the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga select yearling
sale Aug. 10-11 in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
The gross for 145 horses sold jumped 40% to
$46,755,000, while the average of $322,448 increased
a healthy 10%.
The median
inched up 5.3%
to $250,000,
while the RNA
rate was 15%, a
3.9% improve-
ment from last
year.
"This was a
tremendous sale
overall," Browning said. "We had an extremely con-
sistent group of horses on the sale grounds. I think
there is increased confidence by owners to bring their
horses to Saratoga, and I'm pretty confident they will
be rewarded with graded stakes success."
Browning said the results are tied to improved
economic conditions in the industry but also the
efforts of the Fasig-Tipton team.
"There's a lot of pressure on us up here—most of
it self-imposed—because we want to do a great job,"
Browning said. "We'll start working on 2016 in the
morning. We want to build on this success." BH
EL CAPI RACING A RECRUITING SUCCESSBy Eric Mitchell
Fasig-Tipton's increased commitment to recruiting
Latin American buyers is paying big dividends.
Last November the Lexington-based sale com-
pany hired Ramiro Restrepo as its market repre-
sentative for South America and the Caribbean. The
34-year-old South Florida resident started by building
up the base of potential buyers at Gulfstream Park.
Through prominent Venezuelan trainer Gustavo
Delgado, Restrepo met Francisco Convit and broth-
ers Carlos and Jose Uzcategui, three of five partners
in Miami-based El Capi Racing. Restrepo paved the
way for the partners to participate in Fasig-Tipton's
Saratoga select yearling sale, where on opening night
(Aug. 10) they paid $2 million for a strapping Tapit
colt out of Dress Rehearsal, a grade III winner by
Galileo.
"All these guys are new to the U.S. racing scene,
but they are prominent players in their home coun-
try," Restrepo said. "They did their homework and
targeted this horse. They called him'El Toro'—the
bull. They believe this is the horse that is going to
take them to the big stage." BH
Browning attributed gains to increased confidence by owners to bring top horses

STRONG SALE FOR THE FACTORBy Eric Mitchell
Offspring of first-crop yearling sire The Factor
attracted considerable attention at the Fasig-Tip-
ton Saratoga select yearling sale among pinhookers
and end-users alike. All six of the War Front stallion's
Saratoga yearlings sold during the Aug. 11 second
session, where they averaged $386,667.
The Factor's top-selling lot was Hip 202, a
$750,000 colt out of Street Scene purchased by Willis
Horton. Top Line Sales consigned the colt.
'"With War Front doing so well, this is a way to get
a War Front at more value," said Torie Gladwell, own-
er of Top Line Sales with her husband, James.
The Factor was a speedy, multiple grade I winner
who set a six-furlong track record of 1:06.98 at Santa
Anita while breaking his maiden.
"They are very athletic and very well-balanced,"
said Andrew Cary, co-owner of Select Sales, which
sold Hip 152, a $185,000 colt out of Pieria. "They have
enough stretch, so I don't think they will be one-di-
mensional horses." BH
TAPIT, SCAT DADDY LEAD BY GROSSBy Ron Mitchell
While Tapit predictably dominated the Fasig-Tipton
Saratoga yearling sale, the breakthrough sire
would have to be Ashford Stud's Scat Daddy, who was
second by gross and
averaged $450,000
from six yearlings
sold.
The top-priced
Scat Daddy was
Hip 126, a $600,000
colt from Hurstland
Farm's consignment
that sold to Roy and
Gretchen Jackson's
Lael Stables during
the sale's second
session Aug. 11.
Scat Daddy's results are even more impressive con-
sidering his current yearlings were conceived at a rea-
sonable $30,000 fee in 2013; he stood the 2015 season
for $35,000. Sale-leading Tapit's current yearlings were
bred on a $125,000 fee, and the Gainesway stallion
stood for $300,000 in 2015.
Scat Daddy currently sits second on the 2015 sires
of 2-year-olds list and has been on fire this summer
thanks to Acapulco, a $750,000 2-year-old at the Oc-
ala Breeders' Sales Co.'s March sale and subsequent
winner of the Queen Mary Stakes (Eng-II) at Royal Ascot.
Acapulco is among the top prospects for the Nunthorpe
Stakes (Eng-I) Aug. 21 at York. BH

STANDOFF ON FEDERAL MEDICATION BILLBy Tom LaMarra
The gloves came off during the Aug. 11 Saratoga Insti-
tute on Racing, Equine, and Gaming Law conference,
at least when it came to discussion of federal legislation
for equine medication. The commentary offered further
proof there is no consensus among industry stakehold-
ers but, perhaps worse, there is a lot of distrust.
The Association of Racing Commissioners Interna-
tional and horsemen's groups claim they've had no
input in the bill's language, and that supporters of the
initiative want to do away with race-day furosemide in
the United States.
Panelists on the pro side made their case that state-
by-state regulation hasn't worked, and that the Thor-
oughbred Horseracing Integrity Act of 2015, which would
give the United States Anti-Doping Agency oversight of
equine medication policies, testing, and enforcement,
is the only way to bring about uniformity and reform.
Meanwhile, the day's keynote speaker, U.S. Rep. Paul
Tonko of New York, who co-sponsored the legislation,
said he is open to getting input from horsemen and
even from racing fans in advance of a fall hearing. BH
RACING COMPACT OFFERED ONCE AGAINBy Tom LaMarra
A panel discussion on pari-mutuel wagering at the
Aug. 11 Saratoga Institute on Racing, Equine, and
Gaming Law conference brought up an old concept
that had quietly gone away for lack of industry support.
Several years ago the National Racing Compact
had been proposed as a means for state regulators
to agree upon and quickly implement model rules
and policies under a pseudo-federal structure that
protected states rights.
Association of Racing Commissioners Interna-
tional president Ed Martin revisited the idea of the
compact in relation to advance deposit wagering
companies that deal with licensing requirements and
fees in each state in which they do business.
"It was declared a failure, but it was never really
tried," Martin said
of the compact. "I'm
surprised none of the
ADWs realized this
was a vehicle worth
pushing."
Jack Jeziorski, ex-
ecutive vice president
of Monarch Content
Management, which
manages simulcast signals, said ADWs might be
more open to the compact today than they were five
years ago, given the regulatory climate and increas-
ing license fees. BH

TOP FIGS FOR WHITNEY RUNNERSBy Frank Angst
If any concerns remain about the
quality of this year's $1.25 mil-
lion Whitney Stakes (gr. I) in which
Honor Code rallied from 19 1/4
lengths back to catch Liam's Map
in the final strides, this week's
Equibase Speed Figures should
eliminate those doubts.
Boasting seven grade I winners,
the Whitney looked to be the best
handicap race offered so far this
year; it more than lived up to its
billing. The top four finishers reg-
istered the four highest Equibase
Speed Figures of the week. Honor
Code, who entered off a Metro-
politan Handicap (gr. I) victory in
which he registered a then person-
al-best 122 figure, improved on
that, posting a 126.
Whitney runner-up Liam's Map
also was credited with a 126 after
coming up a neck short. Classic
winner Tonalist finished 1 3/4
lengths behind the winner in third,
and earned a 123 while grade I
winner Wicked Strong, six lengths
back in fourth, received a 117. BH
GLENEAGLES, GOLDEN HORN TO MEET AT YORKBy Madison Scott
Leading European 3-year-olds
Gleneagles and Golden Horn,
both unbeaten this season, are set
to face off Aug. 19 in the about-10-
furlong Juddmonte International
Stakes (Eng-I) at York.
Gleneagles has dominated
3-year-old milers, having won two
Guineas and the June 16 James's
Palace (Eng-I). Golden Horn won the
Investec Epsom Derby (Eng-I) and
successfully cut back to 10 furlongs
in the July 4 Coral-Eclipse (Eng-I).
Gleneagles had been targeting
the Aug. 16 Prix Jacques le Marois
(Fr-I), but concerns over the ground
prompted trainer Aidan O'Brien to
alter course.
"I've always considered Glen-
eagles a true miler, but he needs
good, fast ground to be seen at
his best," O'Brien said Aug. 11 in a
Coolmore release. "Therefore, York
will probably be his next race as we
are running out of options."
Gleneagles, by Galileo out of
a full sister to Giant's Causeway,
appears to have the pedigree for
added distance. Golden Horn, by
Cape Cross, heads into the Inter-
national after skipping the group
I King George VI and Queen Eliza-
beth Stakes, also due to concerns
over ground. BH

STALLIONS
A LESS-THAN-EFFICIENT MARKET
Forty-plus years ago I claimed my first brood-
mare prospect and a week later began
teaching financial economics at the university
level. Since then I've researched or written on
the economics and finances of Thoroughbred
breeding and racing on an almost daily basis
while trying to perfect the art of buying low and
selling high in the broodmare market. I consid-
er it my good fortune to have been invited to
continue my research and writing for the new
Blood-Horse Daily. My goal with this column is
to help readers make more informed decisions
in the bloodstock market with financial eco-
nomics in mind.
I often use analogies related to academic
finance and economics topics, and here's the
first. The Efficient Markets Hypothesis (A Ran-
dom Walk Down Wall Street is a great read on this
topic) argues that stock prices, especially those
of large companies, are typically fairly priced,
and that it is a waste of time to look for bargains
in the stock market. In a recent New York Times
article, Robert Shiller contended that real estate
prices are significantly less efficient than stock
prices. I'd argue that bloodstock prices are even
less efficient than real estate prices.
One of many examples I can cite is Elek-
traline, a Canadian grade III stakes winner who
dropped in for a Can$80,000 (about US$50,000
at the time) claiming tag Sept. 19, 2002, while
on the downward side of her racing career. I
convinced my partners that she was a bargain at
that price, and we claimed her and entered her
in the 2003 Keeneland January sale, where she
brought US$110,000. Her pedigree had not im-
proved one whit since the claim. You probably
have a similar story you can tell, but the point is
that good buys can be found in this market. But
this game isn't easy. The average random buyer
of stocks makes money while the average ran-
dom buyer of bloodstock loses money. So, if the
financial outcomes of your breeding and racing
ventures are important to you, it's paramount
that you use careful analysis and employ good
management techniques.
In future columns I'll cover topics such as risk
attitudes, proven vs. unproven stallions, sound
vs. unsound stallions, and other market trends.
My list of potential topics is at 30 and climbing;
if you have a topic you would like to have dis-
cussed, send me a note.
Finally, I have a question for you. Is a proven
stallion worth more if wholly owned by a farm
or if syndicated? Why should a breeder care?
The reader who submits the best answer to
[email protected] (60 words or less) will receive
an iota award in a future column. Next week's
topic: more on market inefficiencies. BH

2015 SIRES BY LIFETIME AEIListed below are the top 10 leading sires by lifetime Average Earnings Index (AEI) through August 10, 2015. Only active stallions in North America (excluding stallions that were exported prior to the 2011 breeding season) with at least 150 named foals of racing age are included. All statistics are Northern Hemisphere only. AEI indicates how much purse money the progeny of one sire has earned in relation to the average earnings of all runners in the same years; average earnings of all runners in any year is represented by an index of 1.00. CI indicates the average earnings of progeny produced from mares bred to one sire, when these same mares were bred to other sires.
