TRANSCRIPT
Message from the Principal:
Dear student, parent/carer,
Welcome to this week’s Year 13 bulletin, a day early due to tomorrow being the bank holiday to celebrate and remember VE Day, Victory in Europe - the beginning of the end of work War II. In today’s edition there is all the normal curriculum content plus a VE Day Competition with amazon vouchers up for grabs as prizes. There is information and suggestions for Mindfulness in May, the 17 sustainable goals (has anyone noticed how blue the sky is?) and an article on Big Cats - I think we are obsessed with cats at the UTC. Next week’s social media quiz of guess the teacher’s pet proves that! More recipes for goodies to make/bake are here - jam doughnuts (maybe for tomorrow’s street party) and Indulgent Chocolate Fudge which apparently takes 187 minutes to make. For parents there are further tips on how to keep youngsters safe on line - for Tik Tok and Snapchat. Have a great long weekend and enjoy the sunshine while it shines.
Kind regards
Richie Wheatcroft

Destination Updates
Please make sure you are continuing to check your
information on the website regarding your offers.
Do not worry if you have not accepted your confirmed and
Insurance place yet, there is still plenty of time. If you do
confirm your choices please drop me an email with your
choice of university, course and requirements so I can track
these for you and offer further support.
I’ve made my choices, what can I do now?
If you have made your choices you may be concerned about what to
you can do now? You may be thinking about:
• Accommodation
• Start Dates
• Student Finances
• Course Content
If you are, there is support for you.
In the first instance, call Admissions at your first choice and discuss this
with them. Universities are having to re-think how they support
students at this time and they are certainly keen to support you in any
way you can. It is better to make a phonecall and talk to someone
directly rather than send an e-mail.
If you do make a phonecall – prepare in advance what you want to
know and have this with you – you can then make notes about the
feedback you are given.
If you are struggling to get the answers you are looking for – please e-mail
me and I will certainly make some calls to help you and do some research so
I can update you with what is happening as it is shared
Thank you to those who have returned their
destination forms – this has been helpful in being
able to share further information in these
newsletters. One area that came up from this who
have responded is the struggle in looking for
apprenticeships. I hope you found some of the links
useful last week and have used the 2 websites to
continue looking for opportunities.
If you liked the look of some of these but they were
not suitable, for whatever reason, please do let me
know and I can continue to share links that may be
useful to some of you.
I wanted an Apprenticeship but I am concerned I may not
get one for September, what can I do?
Now is a difficult time and not knowing what September will bring can be
worrying but it is important that we look into back-ups for you.
You may not have considered 6th form as an option but it is important that you
look into this if you are struggling to find an apprenticeship.
Many 6th forms are and will be offering virtual tours and links to virtual open
events for this Post-16 options. Please do take a look at these.
You do not have to do A Levels, there are a variety of courses that you can follow
– please do let me know if you need any support looking into this alternative
option as you may not know where to start if you had not considered it
previously.
Two useful websites to look for opportunities are:
Use the search engine on the website. This morning there are 328 different
opportunities using the school postcode DE24 8PU and a 25mile radius!

Can You Solve This Riddle From Literature?
• Riddles are rooted deeply in the Western literary tradition. The Exeter Book, the largest extant collection of Old English writing, contains punning, rhymes, and riddles in the form of kennings, or compound words serving as a metaphors for a single word ("whale-road" translates to "the sea.") Some riddles demonstrate the wit of a story's protagonist, or allow a character to escape a dire situation by using their brain rather than their brawn. Other, more puzzling riddles simply remind us that some questions are unanswerable, and while this can lead to hours of frustrated head-scratching, these are sometimes the most pleasantly strange riddles of them all.
Can you solve this riddle from literature?
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire by J.K. Rowling When competing in the Tri-Wizard Tournament, Harry must answer a riddle posed, unsurprisingly, by a Sphinx:
Q: "First think of the person who lives in disguise, Who deals in secrets and tells naught but lies, Next tell me what's always the last thing to mend, The middle of middle and end of the end? And finally give me the sound often heard, During the search for a hard-to-find word. Now string them together, and answer me this, Which creature would you be unwilling to kiss?"
Answer: on the next briefing!
Answer to last week’s riddle: Emma by Jane Austen Emma's wit is put on display when she correctly answers a riddle posed by Mr. Elton.
Q: "My first displays the wealth and pomp of kings, Lords of the earth! their luxury and ease. Another view of man, my second brings, Behold him there, the monarch of the seas!" A: Courtship.

3 ingredient chocolate fudge
(3 hours 7 min includes setting time) This easy fudge recipe takes minutes to prepare and doesn't require the use of a hob. Easy and fun to make!
Ingredients
Serves: 20
• 50g unsalted butter • 397g tin sweetened condensed milk • 400g dark chocolate
Method
Prep:5min › Cook:2min › Extra time:3hr chilling › Ready in:3hr7min
1. Line a baking tray with greaseproof paper or foil 2. Place butter and condensed milk in a microwave safe bowl and
microwave for approximately 2 minutes on full power (the butter will be melted and the milk very hot).
3. Stir the mixture so the butter isn't sitting on the top then place all your chocolate in the mix (broken up in to pieces) and stir until it is all melted.
4. Place the mix on your baking tray and place in the fridge for 2 to 4 hours (I prefer 4 to be safe).
5. Remove from fridge, you should be able to lift your large block of fudge from the tray and chop it up.
Tip
Milk chocolate is okay to use but never use cooking chocolate, as the fudge will not set if you do.
This fudge needs to be stored in the fridge or it will start to melt and go gooey.
MICROWAVE JAM DOUGHNUT
Ingredients
• 2 tablespoons (1oz/30g) Butter
• 4 tablespoons plain flour
• 1 Egg yolk
• 2 tablespoons sugar
• 1 tablespoon milk
• 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
• 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
• 1 tablespoon Strawberry jam
• Sugar to sprinkle on top
Method
• Place butter into a microwavable mug and
microwave until just melted. (roughly 20 seconds)
• Add in the remaining ingredients; mix well with a fork until just combined
• Once the batter is mixed place the spoonful of jam down into the batter
to get a jammy centre
• Microwave for 45 seconds or until it is firm on top. (Cooking time is based
on my 1200W microwave so your timing might vary) Always keep a close
eye on your mug while in the microwave so it does not overflow or
overcook.
• Sprinkle some sugar on top and enjoy!
Tips
The ingredients can be mixed up in advance for an even speedier meal
Cooking time will vary depending on your microwave and the width and depth of
the mug
You can replace the egg with 2 tablespoons of banana or apple sauce.
You can bake them in the oven at 180°C)for roughly 10-12 minutes. However
every mug is different so I advise checking on it after 10 and then make a call.
