Editorial

Welcome to the latest edition of the magazine.

So what have we got this month?

A little more this month … We have an update from Francis, with his car now back in UK he has been tinkering and identifying what needs doing to the car. He is still waiting on HMRC to react to his “Notification of New Arrivals “ certificate. We have a few more images from the donated slide collection, this series has been relatively easy to identify we have a feeling the some of the others may present a bit more of a challenge! We recently took our Mini out on a run organised by Brooklands, a report and pictures are included.

Also included is a reminder about our new clothing supplier.

More stories, reports or tales would be more than welcome!

Donated Slide Collection

Having published a taster last month, this month’s selection is from the 1963 Guards Trophy at Brands Hatch. Finding out who and what in this case was quite easy, the race meeting appears on a number of sports car websites and also picture libraries so finding out the detail was quite easy. I think some of the others might prove more of a challenge.

Sussex Meander

Having recently undertaken a Mini Cooper Register Tour in my Mini we decided we should make a bit more use of the car! After this tour it was apparent we needed to sort the exhaust out as it was constantly banging against the subframe. I had replaced the exhaust with a cheap one (mistake!) and the fit was not perfect. So a new stainless steel one was acquired and fitted. Much better!

they advertised a Touring Assembly around the lanes of Sussex. Sounded like a good idea for a run in the Mini.

On the 5th August it was up early to join the run at Billingshurst with a bacon roll supplied and coffee. After the drivers briefing the cars started off at 9.15. The entry was quite varied, with one other Mini and several Jaguars. Singleton entries included a Triumph Stag, Lea Francis, Bristol, Lancia Fulvia and others.

The route took us to the South East, interestingly the organisers had opted to use words to describe the route rather than tulips. Their mileages were pretty accurate as well. Our first stop was at Ditchling Beacon, being a hot day we had an ice cream! The car park soon filled up with those on the run. We headed off for the next 30 miles to Birling Gap just down the road from Beachy Head.

At Birling Gap it was quite busy, there is an access point to the beach here, hence the number of people. Sadly for them the beach had been closed because part of the cliff had fallen. We drove on about half a mile and found a lay-by and parked up, a little walk and we had a lovely view of Beach Head.

It was a short run of 15 miles to our next stop at Michelham Priory. It was time for a late lunch and a look around the Priory which also had a craft fayre. A very interesting place and worth a more longer visit.

The final section was some 23 miles to the Llama Park at Forest Row where a cream tea awaited - very tasty!

A good day out, road book was very accurate and we only overshot one junction (despite the howls from the navigator)! Mini performed well, lets look for another run to do!

Waiting on the Wings

It is now over a month since Matilda, the seriously patinated 1962 Ford Consul Classic 315 was unloaded on to the Eastern Dock at Southampton.

She has not been seen since, having been transported to a lock-up in Ash Vale. That is other than the occasions when she has been rolled out to have the red dust of Africa and the residual Atlantic spray washed off. Then the casual observer might have seen the removal of sun-bleached decals from all over the bodywork preceding a careful polishing of the already scarce and exceedingly thin remaining paint. No need for the crude angle grinder to imitate ‘patina’ on Matilda!

The lovely Weber 36 carburettor has been stripped, cleaned and flushed with ‘genuine 95 octane’ fuel; not always what this Old Girl has been expected to run on in her previous days in Africa!

The relevant badges are now on the badge bar and ‘ classic safari style’ spot lamps replaced on the front

wings.

What remains now are a number of serious jobs!

1) Fitting 3 point front seat belts to replace the existing lap straps. This involves the trepidatious task of drilling the B posts. Any experiential help or advice will be very graciously received.

2) A minor weld on the exhaust, where the tail pipe meets the rear silencer box. A slight blow at the moment,

3) Critically important is to Waxoil the chassis:/box sections and rust traps on the underside of the car. Classic 315’s are notorious rust boxes - evidence so few on the road today - though Matilda has, so far, avoided the real excesses of the damnable red-rot.

There are various brands of sealants and rust inhibitors on the market, most of which are best sprayed on. For this application the car is best hoisted on a ramp or driven over a pit. Steam cleaning and Wax-oiling can be done professionally, though not the first choice for ‘The Parsimonious, Shoe-Stringing, Jury-Rigging Owner’! Any useful advice, suggestion or help on this task will be most gratefully received, too!

All this and all the planned adventures to follow (more about the planned adventures later) await the return from holidays of the Officials from Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs. They have been on holiday for the month of August with their children, buckets and spades to the sandy beaches of such popular resorts as Skegness, Scunthorpe, Aberystwyth, Minehead and Margate or perhaps even Bognor or Both! It is high time these ‘Apparatchiks’ removed the knotted handkerchiefs from atop their heads, rolled down the hems of their trousers, uplifted their posteriors from their candy-striped deckchairs, remembered that they

were public servants and hastened back to their Official Desks where they could attend to matters of clearing the progress of waiting Motor Cars. You will have deduced that the delay and consequent vitriolic disaffection arises from the non appearance of the long awaited Notification Of New Arrivals or NOVA Certificate, without which an imported car cannot be registered, and in the case of Matilda, be issued with an age-related number.

Anyway, extreme patience is being practised. There may be a ‘minor issue’ as Matilda is registered as an NSU on her South African Log Sheet. That’s a story of bureaucratic blundering for another time.
