IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR MEDIA

PRODUCT USE, DEVELOP OR

CHALLENGE FORMS AND CONVENTIONS

OF REAL MEDIA PRODUCTS?

By Emily Joslin

My mast head is similar to that of ‘BLENER’ magazine as it is bold black text.

The background of my front is white which is very conventional for magazines such as Blender and Q. However, the contents page background of magazines such as Blender, Q and Vibe all tend to have some kind of colour/effect on them, I stuck to this convention and took inspiration from Vibe. I kept the background colour the picture I used already had and spread it across the whole page.

My colour scheme is pink as it is a girly colour and my target audience is teenage girls; a colour scheme is conventional with magazines like Vibe.

I broke the convention of the music magazines I researched having one person on the front cover and instead decided to have two in the form of a pop duo. I done this to make my magazine unique and interesting. I took inspiration from Vibe and added other aspects other than music to my magazine. In vibe they have a fashion section but I changed this to gossip as that is what my focus group preferred.

Having subtitles on the contents page is very conventional for Q magazine and I liked this convention so I incorporated it into my work. It is also conventional to describe each page a bit under each page reference, I used this in my work as I thought it made my work look less mediocre.

For my double page spread I took inspiration from Vibe magazine and Flavour magazine. In Flavour magazine it is conventional for them to have a ‘box out’ in the corner of the page. I used this in my work to make it look more interesting and professional.

I also took inspiration from Vibe magazine to have the lines on the page, this fills the page out more and gives it more flare.

I went against the general convention of images only being on one side of the page and decided to switch it up a bit by having images on either end of the page, I done this to make it original.

I stuck with the convention of all images having direct mode of address from the people in them as according the Uses and Gratifications theory this helps build personal relationships with people therefore encouraging them to buy the magazine.
