March 2017 3

Sean LynchStation Manager

Welcome back everyone!

I am beyond excited to begin my tenure as Station Manager! It has already been a great start to the se-mester with DJ shows picking up and departments be-ginning to hold meetings. We also had to say goodbye to our senior board members which was bittersweet because they are graduating, but they are also moving on to bigger and better things as professionals. We have 12 new additions to the board of directors and they are all amazing! Mike O’Malley, Brandon Fields and Josh Svetz make up the Programming department. Stephen Wilt is the new assistant music director. Joe Cerualo and Dustin Schriebman compose the Sports department. Diana McElfresh and Yoselin Person will be bringing the news. Emmy Kolbe and Joe Fulmore are the Promo department. Alex Prusik is the assistant Production Director. Finally, Nick Inglisa is the Business Director. These talented individuals are great additions to the Board of Directors and I am excited to be working with them and the returning members of the board. There was also one switch in departments. Former News Director Liam McGurl is now the new Co-PR Director. I am excited to see what he has to offer to The Buzzworthy publication. We are also in the process of building up a delay system in the booth. This will enable us to have people call in without worrying about anyone using profanity. Our advisor Joe “Patch” Paci-orkowski has also been helping throughout the station to bring in new equipment we received from Sirius XM, and has also repaired some of the older equipment and added a new microphone in the booth. We had our DJ Lock-In on February 28 through the 29 and raised over $100 for Embrace it Africa. The Lock-In has always been a staple at The Buzz with DJs playing anything from the traditional format to more obscure genres like doo-wop and country. That’s all from me for now. Make sure to stay tuned for what’s coming next from The Buzz and keep reading for some awesome stories from our Buzzworthy staffers.

Music is ubiquitous, but this month it seems like Chance the Rapper’s music is “all we got.” Since his debut Grammy performance, Chance and his music have been a hot topic on social media—and everywhere else. Tickets for his spring tour went on sale a few days after his incredible Grammy performance, and 11 of the 37 cities sold out after less than a week. For someone who’s stayed out of the spotlight for the better part of his career, that’s quite the accomplishment. Why do people rave about Chance so much? It could be his unique take on the hip-hop genre as a whole. It could have something to do with the fact that Chance revels as an independent artist and refuses to sell his music. He proudly offers it on streaming sites like Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal and Soundcloud. But the likely cause for all the enthusiastic chat about the Chicago rapper is that he’s a genuine and likable human being. During his acceptance speech, the 23-year-old said, “I want to thank God for my team. I know people think inde-

pendence means you do it yourself, but independence means freedom. I do it with these folks right here. Glory be to God, I claim the victory in the name of the lord, let’s go!” Although he’s an indepen-dent recording artist, Chance hardly gives himself the credit. He recognizes that ev-eryone around him is a crucial part of maintaining his suc-cess. And let’s face it, rappers who make dope beats rock the charts, but rappers that put out creative music while having a charming personality win in every aspect. And Chance is already winning this year. His spring tour kicks off in San Diego on April 24—al-ready a sold-out show. The “Same Drugs” singer has left his mark on old fans and new fans alike, especially since his 2016 release of Coloring Book. It’s only fair to say the young rapper’s career will continue to thrive and flourish from this point on.

The Best of the Month” in music

Chance the Rapper Shines with Well-Deserved Grammy Accolades

The early front runner for album of the year in 2017, G.O.O.D music’s Sampha lived up to the hype with Process. A 10-track LP coming in at a cool 40 minutes, Process commits little to no er-rors through adventurous songwriting and harmonic melody. Using atmospheric and symphonic instrumentation, coupled with Sampha’s diverse and beautiful voice, Process comes close to R&B perfection. Beginning with the wide-ranging Plastic 100’ C using synthesizer, drums and piano setting the tone for the eerie, yet intoxicating project. Highlights include the upbeat and rhythmic “Blood on Me,” detailing Sampha’s increased anxiety due to his past mistakes. Kora Sings a tribute to his mom who died of cancer in 2015 in “Like the Piano,” a minimalistic and introspective love letter to his piano and how nothing in this world understands his deepest thoughts,

Sampha’’s Process Exceeds Fan Expectations in Risk Takingdreams and inse-curities like his beloved instrument. The standout track, “Reverse Faults” features a reverb-filled and nightmarish intro-spection of a past relationship. The track builds with stripped-back production until the chorus, which explodes as a metaphor for anger and regret. Sampha strikes a chord with the deep thinkers while also not alienating a general audience. His visual storytelling combined with ex-cellent production and gorgeous vocals brings together not only February’s best project, but the best album of a young 2017 so far.

clean-freak who has an addiction to watching women dance, Hedwig, a nine-year old boy who has some sick dance moves and overuses the word “etcetera” and Miss Patricia who is chilling and flips shit when she doesn’t cut a sandwich into perfect halves. These identities drop hints to the girls about them being sacrificed to the Beast as “sacred food.” The character

of Casey (Anya Taylor-Joy), who has dark secrets of her own, can maneu-ver around the different identities of Kevin. She is especially tricky and manipulative towards Hedwig, whom she ends up getting information from, as he knows the secrets to how the girls could escape. Writer-director M. Night Shyama-lan allows the audience to get a closer look into Kevin’s psyche through the character of Dr. Fletcher (Betty Buck-ley), his therapist, who has done exten-sive research on those with DID and

Watching the trailer for Split, I was expecting jump scares galore and horror movie basics, including pitiful attempts at an escape, girls crying and begging for mercy, and of course, the villain who is just pure evil. But, I was wrong. James McAvoy plays the role of Kevin, a patient with dissociative iden-tity disorder (DID). Kevin has 23 iden-tities living inside of his body, plus one more that is about to emerge, identified as “the Beast.” Unfortunately, we only get to see a handful of these identi-ties during the length of the film. It is the identity known as “Dennis” who captures the three teenage girls in the trailer: birthday girl Claire, Marcia and the misfit, Casey. The very beginning of the movie is filled with suspense as the audience doesn’t know what “Den-nis did to Claire’s father, nor does the audience know why Dennis took these girls. In fact, at this point in the film, the audience doesn’t even know who Dennis is. The girls are ta ken into a bunker-like cell where they encounter the identities of Dennis, a meticulous

has other patients besides Kevin with the same affliction. Dr. Fletcher’s meetings with “Barry,” another one of Kevin’s personalities, helps the audi-ence understand Kevin’s abusive back-ground and allows the audience to see the character Kevin as someone who has suffered from a deeply traumatiz-ing childhood, and is not someone who is a complete psychopath. Dr. Fletcher explains that Kevin’s other identities act as a defense mechanism to protect Kevin from the pain of the outside world. Dr. Fletcher also explains to her colleagues who also study DID that the human mind, when placed under cer-tain levels of stress, can transform you. She even references to a blind person with DID creating identities that could see. Later in the film, it is also seen that one of Kevin’s other identities has diabetes and needs certain medications, whereas the other identities don’t. Without giving too much away to prospective viewers, I’m ending this review with my overall suggestion: Go watch this movie! Although Shyama-lan takes a predictable delve into the supernatural, the acting of McAvoy and Taylor-Joy is phenomenal. Split will definitely leave you wondering about what the human mind is really capable of.

It doesn’t seem like that long ago when we’d “tune in” each week to watch a new episode of our favorite shows. Probably because it wasn’t that long ago. But watching shows weekly was a pain. If your pre-ferred program was a half-hour show, you’d be subjected to at least 10 minutes of advertising. Besides that, there would be times where you’d have to miss the show, and it would be dif-ficult to catch up. That’s probably what makes streaming services so appealing — no (or, at most, limited) advertising and the ability to watch it whenever you want. So, if you feel like binge watching, you can do that. If you’d rather space your viewing of a show out to make it last, you can do that, too.

Streaming: The New Norm for Show Watching

Amber Canbek

Diana McElfresh @dmcelf

Just last week, my roommates and I discovered last year’s massive hit, The People vs. OJ Simpson. We started it on Netflix — meaning we could watch it at our own pace — we watched two episodes in one night, but it wouldn’t matter if we didn’t watch again for six weeks. The show would still be waiting for us. Or, say you got to the Stranger Things game late — it would only take about 10 hours of streaming to catch up to your friends — rather than the 10 weeks it would take if weekly shows were still de rigueur. Streaming is the way to go for people with limited, fluctuating schedules — so, basically everyone.

The 2017 Grammy Awards dealt a night of slip-ups, political nuances and shocking snubs nobody quite understood — even the winners themselves. And then there’s the live performances, the kind that usually situate themselves as polar opposites — some sitting just right in the cultural context of the time, others over asserting and a contingent centered on striped-down vocals and simple sets. This time around, hosted by The Late, Late Shows’ James Corden, the annual red carpet event kicked off on Sunday, Feb. 12, with some of the best live performances in Grammys history. Each genre was represented in its own light and — despite anti-Grammy protests from usual, A-lister attendees (like rappers Kanye West and Drake) — genres found their represen-tation in on-stage performances, more so than in the faulty categorization that comically dubbed Drizzy’s smooth sung “Hotline Bling” a tradi-tional rap effort. Each performance was knockout, none flawless; and that candid nature’s what made this year’s Grammys one of the 2000s’ best. Corden’s stadium-wide cardboard carpool of Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline,” Adele’s abrupt halt to her emotional George Michael tribute, a faulty Metallica mic and a baby-bearing Beyonce backbend: It was all too damn entertaining; but no mishap overshadowed the music. Each performer delivered a sense of power, elegance, esteem — and that made the night all-the-more enjoyable. A timely shift, in a time of experimental and artistic risk taking, the night’s most explosive performances came from the ranks of non-traditional Grammy performers — off the charts, on top of their game. Sure, Beyonce brought amazing production and kickass vocals — she always does. Of course, Adele still inundated the Grammys arena with a cosmic concoction of low register belts and scrappy high notes. And, not surprisingly, Bruno Mars’ Prince tribute blended his soulful showmanship into the smooth sounds of the late icon. But, the playtime and ac-claim dealt on the heads of less-known artists was nice, and needed. Metallica joined forces with Lady Gaga for an electrifying, pirotecnic-heavy rendition of “Moth Into Flame.” Mother Monster, post-Super Bowl _ half-time show, dove off the stage with swooping vocals, effortlessly complementing James Hetfield’s vocals — post technical difficulties. Chance the Rapper’s gospel infused performance of ““How Great” and “All We Got” was a knockout — his bars elevated by signature inflections and carried by a booming, smiley chorus (starring Kirk Franklin and Tamela Mann). One of the simpler sets of the night, the Chicago-native’s minimalistic approach and authentic artistry — having never sold an album — ranked him in the upper echelons of the night’s performances. He just loves music, plain and simple. Political performances from Katy Perry and A Tribe Called Quest also dominated, with Perry — donning a Clinton-esque pantsuit, singing “Chained to the Rhythm” from behind a metaphoric white picket fence, only to dismantle her

All the snubs AND slip ups

stage set into a backdrop for The U.S. Constitution’s projection. Fist held high, with Skip Marley at her side, she proclaimed “No Hate,” a shot at “President Agent Orange” — as the later performance dubbed the presidential ap-pointment. Simply put, ATCQ spoke for the general consensus of the room — maybe even getting some inspiration from model Chrissy Teigen’s personal Twitter. The group was joined by a force of marginalized in an on-stage protest.

They broke Trump’s proposed border wall. They made their convictions as clear as Anderson .Paak’s melodic taps: We, a nation, reject intolerance. It was bold, in all the right ways. Aside, the night’s awards weren’t all that shocking. Chance won “Best New Artist,” the most deserved award of the night. Lemonade, Beyonce’s praiseworthy ode to black empower-ment, naturally won “Best Urban Contemporary Album.” Adele’s belting served a clean sweep, naturally, (even at Beyonce’s expense, in the night’s only shocking award snub). Her triumphs in the “Best Pop Solo Performance,’ “Best Pop Vocal Album,” “Record of the Year” and “Song of the Year” were expected. An “Album of the Year” snag from Beyonce’s Lemonade, well, not so much. On stage, Adele admitted her shock, too. The night’s takeaway: Maybe reputation’s given a lesser value as the industry charges into 2017. Experimental might be the new norm — and banking on consistency and fan base, an award-loss-ensuring cop-out.

Staffer for the Music Department and Assistant Music Director.

What is your favorite Buzz memory?I love the lock-ins. They are a great opportunity to hang out with friends and play music that you want to play for a good cause. It is really fun to broadcast at random hours of the night and wonder if anyone is even listening.

What was the journey to being stationmanager like?

Overall, it has been a fun experience. I am glad that I have had the opportunity to rise through the ranks from staffer to station manager. What do you think is essential to rising up to a leadership position on campus?

One of the most important things is to sur-round yourself with people who want to work hard and be successful. When you put yourself around people who care about their craft, it forces you to work harder because you don’t want to let them down.

What can you say to our readers about joining The Buzz?

The Buzz is a great campus experience. It is a great way to earn internship hours on campus while perfecting your craft along the way.
