Let’s go over some reminders for how you should take your test so that you can do your best!

BEFORE You Read

Read questions FIRST!Before you read the passage, read the

first few questions for the passage. This will help you to FOCUS on finding the important information that will help you answer the questions.

WHILE You Read

Read each paragraph CAREFULLY!Block out noises around you. Follow along with your finger or

your pencil. Visualize the text as you read.

AFTER You Read

Write quick summaries after you read.Stop after every 1-2 paragraphs and

fill in the left side of your answer sheet with… Who or What the passage is about What happened

AFTER Your Read

Explain your answers.

Thomas stood outside the cafeteria on his first day at his new school. The room was bustling with hundreds of kids snaking their way through the breakfast line, eating with friends at the cafeteria tables, or simply walking around greeting each other and catching up on the latest gossip before they were off to classes. Thomas stood there, trying to figure out how to make his way through the crowd to feed his growling stomach. Sweat poured from his forehead at the very thought of entering this sea of unfamiliar faces. Maybe today, he would just have to go hungry.

Final Thoughts…

Be focused. Block out distractions. Take your time.

Be a critical thinker. Use the ALL strategies your teacher has taught you.

Be confident! You have worked hard in classes to practice these reading

skills. You WILL do an excellent job.

Be calm. Take a deep breath and think positive thoughts if you get

nervous. “I know I can do this!” “My goal is 80% or higher!”

If your friend was being bullied by a classmate, what would you do? Why would you react that way? If you have experienced a situation like this, explain how you reacted.

Yesterday, most of you said that you had never been bullied. But bullying is a very broad term with lots of meanings. You may not see something as bullying, but simple teasing and name-calling can sometimes be just as harmful as physical abuse or threats. Think about that the next time you consider calling someone a name.
