Indiana’s Academic Standards describe what mathematics you should learn this school

year. Your textbook, Math Connects, Course 3, is one of the main tools you will use to

learn this math. If you master the mathematics, you should be able to do well on the

ISTEP+ test in the spring.

This workbook, Mastering the ISTEP+, is another tool to help you review the

mathematics you will need for performing well on the test this year. It is actually two

workbooks in one.

This side of the workbook contains tools to help you determine which of the standards

you know well and which ones you still need to practice. The questions are similar to

those you might see on the ISTEP+ test.

The Reference Sheet on the next page lists some of the formulas that you should

be familiar with in order to solve problems more quickly.

A Prerequisite Skills Check tests the standards from last year, which are tools

you’ll need for this year’s mathematics.

The Diagnostic Test assesses the math skills you will learn this year.

The Practice by Standard section contains worksheets that focus on each

standard individually. These also can be used to practice types of questions you

may have answered incorrectly on the Diagnostic Test.

In the Problem Solving section, you will learn how to read word problems

and find the best ways to solve them.

Practice Tests are included to help determine how much you have learned

this year.

If you flip this workbook over, you will find the Study Guide and Intervention and Practice Workbook, Course 3 that goes along with your student edition textbook.

There are two pages of practice for each lesson in your textbook. These pages review

the math being taught in the lesson and give you practice problems for that math.

Remember that the most important thing is to concentrate on learning the

mathematics. When you know the math, you have the power to do well on the test.

Follow the Four-Step Plan below to help you answer Problem 1.

1 Derek built a square pyramid with a side length of 18 centimeters for the base. The slant height of each face of the pyramid is 20 centimeters.

What is the surface area of the pyramid?

Answer square centimeters

The pyramid will rest on a table. Derek plans to cover the visible parts of the pyramid with felt. How many square centimeters of felt will he need?

Answer square centimeters

Read the problem.

What do you want to find?

What information can you use from the problem?

The make a model strategy can help you visualize the dimensions of the pyramid so that you can find the area of the base and each face of the pyramid.

What formulas will you need to solve the problem?

Follow the Four-Step Plan below to help you answer Problem 2.

2 Gabriela, the manager of a wildlife rehabilitation center, is making a schedule for volunteers. She would like there to be 2 volunteers for every 7 animals in the center.

At the present time, there are 18 volunteers on the roster. If Gabriela sticks to the plan, what would be the maximum number of animals at the center?

Answer

An oil spill resulted in a total of 98 animals at the center. How many more volunteers than the ones on the roster does Gabriela need to find?

Answer

Read the problem.

What are you asked to find?

What given information can you use to solve the problem?

One approach to solving this problem is to use the make a table strategy, which can help you identify the relationship between the number of volunteers at the center and the number of animals.

Make a table of equal ratios, starting with the ratio of 2 volunteers to 7 animals, and ending with 18 volunteers to the number of animals.

Number of Volunteers Number of Animals

Use the table to find the maximum number of animals that can be at the center if all 18 volunteers are there.

Use the table to find how many MORE volunteers would be needed if there were 98 animals at the center. Explain how you used the table.

Reread the problem.

Did you answer the questions that were asked? Are your answers reasonable? Does your explanation make sense within the context of the original question?
