From the Deskof the Director—December, 2005

It has been an interesting and chal-lenging Autumn Quarter for us atInternational House. We are again openafter a brief period of closure thispast summer for the initial phase of theroom restoration project. We movedback into I-House just days before thestart of the fall term in the midst offinal work being completed on the WestWing residential rooms and finaltouches on the rewiring and sprinklerinstallation for office spaces on the first and second floors.

Currently 173 residents occupy the171 rooms that make up the West Wingof the building. We have residentsfrom 40 countries living together andsharing the truly unique experiencethat sets International House apartfrom all of the other living opportunitiesin the Hyde Park area.

Work continues on the East Wingwith restoration running slightly aheadof schedule—something that isalmost unheard of in construction circlesthese days! We expect to install newfurniture on the East Wing and haveadditional residents occupying someof these spaces by January 1, 2006.

One of our many improvementsto the building is the creation of ahotel-style floor on the East Wing. The8th floor now serves as a permanentshort-term guest floor. Rooms have beencarpeted and furnished with queen-sized beds, TV’s, alarm clocks, telephone service and access to theinternet. They rent for the very reason-able rate of $62 for a single or $67 for a double with discounted weeklyrates also available.

On your next visit to Chicago comeand be a part of the revitalized homethat we are making for today’s students.

Gertrude (Trudy) Pauline Trogdon 1912–2005

Gertrude “Trudy” Trogden, inspired byher travels around the world and herlove of entertaining guests in her home, founded the International ThanksgivingFellowship Program based on her“grassroots philosophy” of promotinginternational understanding one family at a time. Thanksgiving was chosenfor its tradition of bringing friends andfamilies together. This unique Americanholiday gives international studentsand their families an opportunity toexperience American family life outsideof Chicago and gives host familiesthe occasion to learn about the culturesand ideas of their international guests.During the first year of the program in 1956, 141 students and their familiesrepresenting 35 countries were guestsin 90 Paris, Illinois homes. Administeredthrough International House at theUniversity of Chicago, the program hasspread across the state to include the communities of Morrison, Geneseo,Prophetstown, Rockford, and Sterling-Rock Falls who now invite internationalstudents to join their families in celebrat-ing the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

Trudy’s legacy lives on through the thousands of friendships the pro-gram has inspired over 49 years. A fund has been established in Trudy’smemory to support the ThanksgivingFellowship Program. Contributionsas well as any stories and photos thatyou would like to share should be sentto the Office of Programs and ExternalRelations at International House.

As International House looks to the future, planned giving will be important to our growth as a home away from home for our residents. For more information about how a planned giftcan help the International House, please contact Heather McClean, Associate Director ofGift Planning at 773.834.2117 or [email protected]

The Residential Fellowship Program was inspiredby the desire to have equal representation ofAmerican and International students in the House.Begun in the early 1980’s with an award of oneFellowship, the program has greatly increased thenumber of fellowship awards, thanks to contribu-tions by former residents and friends of the Housealong with annual fund-raising events. This year,25 qualified residents have been awarded aca-demic year Residential Fellowships, including theChen Fellowship and the Watkins Fellowship. The Chen Fellowship is made possible by the gen-erous support of Min-sun and Anita Beltran Chen who are former residents of InternationalHouse. The Watkins Fellowship is been made possible by the generous support of Mr. & Mrs.George and Catherine Watkins who served as Board members for International House.

Over 50 percent of the residents now comefrom countries outside of the United States, partly as a result of this successful program.Residential Fellowships are offered throughoutthe academic year. Inquiries should be directedto Alumni Relations in the Office of Programsand External Relations.
