IEEE Student Branch at Poornima University, Jaipur

The IEEE Student Branch has been opened under Advanced Studies Research Center (ASRC) of the

Poornima University vide welcome letter dated 22 June 2016 having Student Branch

code STB1014 and School Code is 60108724. The basic objective of opening this branch under ASRC

has been to further open different Society Chapters in various departments of the University thereby

involving all Bachelor, Master and Doctoral students and faculty in IEEE activities and awareness

through conduction of Technical Seminars, Workshops, Conferences and other technical & cultural

activities leading to promotion of IEEE and advancement of technology in right perspective. At present

there are more than 90 IEEE Student Members and more than 15 Professional members under the

branch.

The function began with a welcome speech by the Dean (R & D) Dr. Mahesh Bundele , Professor & head

Dept of ASRC, PU. He welcomed - Prof. K. Subramanian, Chair, IEEE Delhi Section, Guest of honor Prof.

A. Murali M. Rao, Chair, IEEE CS, Delhi Section, Honorable President Dr. K. K. S. Bhatia, President

Poornima University, Dr. Manoj Gupta, Dean (SET & SOM) and Provost, Poornima University, Dr. Arun

Dev Dhar Dwivedi, Student Branch Counselor, Mr. Devendra Somwanshi Chair Student Branch & his

team of Office bearers, Ms. Shikha Gautam, Chair, CS Chapter of the University, Dr. Nidhi Mishra,

Advisor, CS Chapter, other IEEE members, participants from PCE, PIET, PGI and other Institutions in

Jaipur, Deans, Heads, faculty members, other guest and delegates. He told that this is 14th

Technical

activity of the Student Branch since its inception in June 2016. He said that we have opened four IEEE

Society Chapters under the branch and Women in Engineering Affinity Group under the branch. He also

discussed the benefits of IEEE Membership and facilities of Computer Society. He told that Poornima

University IEEE student branch website was created as provided by headquarter and it is being maintained.

He also thanked Prof. K. Subramanian and Prof. A. Murali M. Rao on behalf of Poornima University and

Rajasthan Subsection for accepting the invitation for the Inaugural Program and as Distinguished speakers.

He expressed his special thanks to management of Poornima University for extending financial support in

organizing various activities. Lastly, he thanked to Dr. KKS Bhatia and Dr. Manoj Gupta for their

cooperation and support from planning to execution of the activities under the student branch.

Dr. Arun Dev Dhar Dwivedi, Professor, Branch Counselor, IEEEE student Branch welcomed to all the

dignitaries on the dais, guests & participants of the function. He briefly introduced the IEEE Student

Branch Poornima University, its objectives and scope. He has elaborated about the activities organized by the

student branch during June 2016 and April 2017. He further said that the branch and chapters together will

conduct Poster presentation, student seminars, project exhibition, National/International workshops and

ethics competitions and many more. He shared the details of all last events and upcoming events

organized by IEEE Student Branch. He told that currently more than 90 members are there in the IEEE

students Branch Poornima University which includes bachelors, masters, doctoral students and faculty

members. Lastly he expressed his best wishes for success of the technical seminar.

Address by Provost

Dr. Manoj Gupta

The Provost Dr. Manoj Gupta congratulated to Prof. Dr. Mahesh Bundele & his team for their

successful attempt to establish an IEEE Student Branch at the university and wished them the best for

the further events. He said, Poornima University is committed for providing quality education to the

students. He has advised the students that excellent technical skills are required for becoming good

engineers. He also told that our faculties are utilizing their best potentials for the improvements of

curricular and co-curricular activities. He advised the student participants to take a note of what would

be covered in the two talks. He told the various benefits of technical seminar to the students in their

research work and projects. He further said, Poornima University will provide full support in terms of

resources and facilities for newly inaugurated society.

Prof. A. Murali M. Rao

Prof. A. Murali M. Rao Chair, IEEE CS, Delhi Section congratulated the student branch for their

initiatives. He discussed about IEEE and encouraged students to become member of International

professional body –IEEE. He promised the full support of IEEE Computer Society, Delhi Section in

the way ahead. He then went on to talk about how IEEE Computer Society is involved in changing the

face of computer science worldwide and how we can get benefited through being a part of this group

of technology leaders. He shared his own experience in the IEEE and Computer Society and motivated

the audience. His inspirational and thoughtful words were greeted by loud applauses from the

assembled crowd.

Prof. K. Subramanian

Prof. K. Subramanian Chair IEEE Delhi section, delivered the inaugural address. He said that IEEE

Computer Society is the world's leading organization dedicated to computer science and technology.

Serving more than 60,000 members, the IEEE Computer Society is the trusted information, networking,

and career-development source for a global community of technology leaders that includes researchers,

educators, software engineers, IT professionals, employers, and students. He also discussed the mission

and vision of IEEE Computer society. He told that IEEE Computer Society sponsors more than 200

technical conferences and events every year, including the industry-oriented "Rock Stars" series, all over

the world, aimed at research and industry professionals. He told the pros and cons of being an IEEE

member. He told student benefits and exposed the student resources available at platform of IEEE. He

said that in addition to conferences and publishing, the IEEE Computer Society is a leader in

professional education and training, and has forced development and provide partnerships with major

institutions and corporations internationally. These rich, self-selected, and self-paced programs help

companies improve the quality of their technical staff and attract top talent while reducing costs. Lastly

he wished Computer Society Poornima University the very best in all its endeavors.

Then President, Dr. K.K.S Bhatia welcomed Prof. K. Subramanian, Chair, IEEE Delhi Section, Prof.

A. Murali M. Rao, Chair, IEEE CS, Delhi Section, all the guests and participants. He said that IEEE

Computer society chapter will benefit the students in their academic career. He also appreciated Dr.

Mahesh Bundele for his continuous effort to organize such events in the Poornima University. He also

talked about personality development requirements expected from the new engineers. He shared one

story of man who was trapped in the freezer closer to death and suddenly the security guard came and

opened the door of freezer and saved his life. The man asked the guard how he knew that he was locked

in the freezer. The guard replied that hundreds of worker came in and out every day but you are the one

who use to greet me in the morning and evening. Today in the morning you greeted me but in the

evening I did not hear your voice. The guard said he thought something had happened and was searching

everywhere for you in the factory. The moral of story was to greet everyone. He appreciated the efforts

of IEEE Student branch members for organizing this event.

Vote of Thanks by IEEE CS Chair

In the end, Ms. Shikha Gautam offered a vote of thanks to Chief Guest Prof. K. Subramanian & Guest of

Honor Prof. A. Murali M. Rao for sparing their valuable time and motivating the participants. She

expressed gratitude and thanks to Dr. K.K.S. Bhatia, President Poornima University for his gracious

presence and motivational speech in the program. Further expressed obligations to Dr. Mahesh Bundele

& Dr. Manoj Gupta for their presence and guidance for conduction of the program. She thanked all the

participants without whom the program could not have been a success. She thanked all office bearers of

IEEE student branch, CS chapter and student members of PU Student branch for their efforts in

Talk Delivered:

Prof. A. Murali M. Rao defined what is Defensive Programming and the Techniques used.

Explained Intelligent Source Code Reuse and stated that If existing code is tested and known to

work, reusing it may reduce the chance of bugs being introduced. However, reusing code is

not always a good practice, because it also amplifies the damages of a potential attack on the

initial code. Reuse in this case may cause serious business process bugs. There are Legacy

problems. He also explained through examples about Secure Input and Output Handling.

Illustrated use of Canonicalization, Low Tolerance Against “Potential" Bugs, Architect and

design for security policies, how to Adopt secure coding standards, Adhering to the principle

of least privilege, how to Sanitize data sent to other systems, and Practicing defense in depth.

He further introduced Open Web Application Security Project OWASP foundation. Explained

Top 10 Critical Web Application Security Risks – 2017 including A1- Injection, A2- Broken

Authentication and Session Management, A3- Cross-Site Scripting (XSS), A4- Broken Access

Control, A5- Security Mis-configuration, A6- Sensitive Data Exposure, A7- Insufficient Attack

Protection (NEW), A8- Cross-Site Request Forgery (CSRF), A9- Using Components with

Known Vulnerabilities, A10- Under protected APIs (NEW). Finally talked about Security need

to be done at Network Level, System Level, Application Level and Data Level
