Welcome Welcome to the Inbound Travel Directory 2008, your

authoritative guide to those New Zealand tour operators

and suppliers who handle a large share of New Zealand’s

inbound tourism business and who are members of the

Inbound Tour Operators Council (ITOC).

We know from feedback that this annual publication is

valued as a major source of information by our New Zealand

members and overseas tour wholesalers and retail travel

agencies.

ITOC plays an important role within the country’s tourism

industry and enjoys a close working relationship with the

various Regional Tourism Organisations, Tourism New

Zealand, Qualmark and other key national tourism bodies.

Our focus is very much on stimulating business to business

relationships between companies throughout the travel

distribution chain as well as in enhancing quality and adding

value.

In the past year ITOC has reviewed its membership and

financial criteria and has strengthened its focus on quality

by establishing an Inbound Tour Operator accreditation

system in conjunction with Qualmark. By early 2008 all ITOC

full member tour operators must meet minimum standards

in this area, ensuring that we play our part in New Zealand

delivering a world-class visitor experience. The first two

ITOC full members successfully completed their Qualmark

assessment in December 2007 and the remainder will follow

over the next 15 months.

Best wishes

NZ prizesA ir New Zealand’s new website www.airnzagent.co.nz for travel agents is up and running with one week left for frontliners to enter the online prize draw.Visit the site by December 14 and enter the competition for the chance to win, Koru membership and international travel.Keeping travel agents up-to-date is a key priority for NZ and the new site is a big step towards maximising agents’ time by placing key information at their fingertips, according to NZ’s general manager New Zealand and Pacific Islands region Cam Wallace.“The new site provides agents with 24/7 access to a variety of useful agent-related information and will continue to evolve in the year ahead.

“Indirect distribution plays a significant role with transacting business on behalf of our mutual customers and it is critical that we make it as easy as possible for agents to sell NZ.”

Established agent communication tools such as Wingtips, booking functionality and the groups site remain but are now hosted on the site.NZ agency sales support manager Jason O’Connell said that the site was more than just a technical reference point.“We believe that the information provided on the site will assist agents in answering various queries thus saving valuable time by reducing emails and response times.

“It is intended to be an extension of our face-to-face sales activity with travel agents.”

Content also includes NZ policies and procedures, ad hoc trade offers and relevant forms.

Unlike the confusion surrounding the implementation of Fiji’s Hotel Turnover Tax (HTT) last year, Fiji’s hotel association has rallied to limit the impact of the government increasing the HTT to five per cent from April. The Fiji Island Hotel & Tourism Association (FIHTA) has recommended its members follow a consistent policy absorbing the costs on existing bookings and those made until December 17 for guests travelling post April 1.

From December 17 onwards, it has recommended that new bookings for travel post April should include the new tax rate – two per cent more than the current three and applicable on hotel rates and all transactions onsite. FIHTA president Dixon Seeto said this allows for a smooth transition for

wholesalers and gives them time to clear bookings that are partially made to avoid any consumer law entanglements or customer dissatisfaction. He said that the recommendation had been sent to all its membership immediately after its December 1 board meeting. The association represents more than 80 per cent of Fiji’s room inventory.

“We believe that many will use this as a guide in implementing their policies. I must point out that the FIHTA is only able to make a recommendation to our members and are not able to direct the policy of individual businesses. “Each property will and must make its own decision based on their individual business needs.”

Seeto said hotels were not expecting the increase announced in Fiji’s

November budget especially since the FIHTA had spent time explaining to the government about lead time and how any increase in taxes would make Fiji less competitive against other destinations.“We have been at government’s ear for a long time now asking for them to be aware of the mechanics of the tourism industry, in particular the wholesale side of things,” he said.“They have tried to accommodate us slightly by imposing the extra tax from April and not January as the rest of the budget. We understand that wholesalers want 12 months notice and hotels would also like that timeframe but unfortunately budgets and tax measures don’t work like that.”

Progress is finally being made on the ghostly property that has haunted the Cook Islands since 1990 and Kiwis can own a slice of the pie – if they dare.New Zealand-based property developer the McEwen Group, Rarotongan-based Tepaki Group and Hilton International have opened an Auckland showroom (10-14 Upper Queen Street) designed to entice investors to buy into the Hilton Rarotonga Resort & Spa, which will open 2009.

The resort will rise from the ashes of the abandoned construction in Vaimaanga that has dogged Rarotonga

since contractors ran off with millions of borrowed funds in the early 1990s.The resort will feature 160 hotel suites and 50 apartments - ranging from one to three bedrooms - freshwater pools, salt

water lagoon, tennis courts, conference facilities, performance stages, multiple restaurants and limousine pick-up from the airport.
