This project format lives from your contributions. Cross-industry know-how transfer and mutual coaching are the primary goal. You select the topics and share your challenges, experiences and questions on specific issues with the other partners. In return, you will receive insights from them, occasionally complemented by external experts.

The Invention Center team supports you in identifying best practices and developing the most important recommendations for action. In addition, we design the organizational framework of the individual meetings and take over the moderation and documentation of the results.

Managing Collaboration in Innovation EcosystemsCross Industry Group

Overview

Focus topics

Cooperation management is becoming a key competence for innovativecompanies, targeting complex product-ecosystems that can no longer besuccessfully driven by one player on its own. However, the identification andselection of suitable partners and the structuring of long-term cooperation isusually associated with major challenges. Different corporate cultures andprocesses as well as Intellectual Property issues are only a few of thenumerous aspects that make cooperation challenging. In this Cross IndustryGroup we identify and discuss existing strategic approaches and bestpractices for successful participation in innovation ecosystems.

Core questions of this Cross Industry Group could be: Which forms of cooperation exist and which is the right one to choose –

ranging from startup cooperation to complex research alliances How can cooperation in ecosystems be managed and controlled? How is IP managed successfully? How can cross-functional development networks be established? What role does crowd sourcing play in this context? ….

TIMEX – Technology and Innovation Management Expert Circle Cross Industry Group

Overview

Focus topics

In the TIM Expert Group, innovation and R&D managers from established companies meet to discuss current topics from their fields of activity with each other and with researchers from RWTH Aachen University under the direction of Prof. Frank Piller in a mutual exchange. Focus topics will be collected and selected together with the participating partners. Intensive exchange and networking, interactive learning of innovation methods and joint projects take place in an open atmosphere.

This Cross Industry Group focuses on strategically relevant news, trends and knowledge in technology and innovation management In the field of technology and innovation management, new trends

and "buzzwords" are constantly circulating. Many of these have already been well researched theoretically and

scientifically or are already being used in niches. However, practical implementation in established companies is often

challenging and can often only be realized through targeted, moderated exchange with external experts.

Past and future topics: Innovation culture, business model innovation, idea selection, TRIZ, futurology and much more.

Sustainable Packaging – Materials, Processes and DesignsConsortium Project

Relevance of the Topic in 2020

Added Value

Due to regulatory decisions many companies are forced to prevent thegeneration of packing waste and need to initial measures to minimizethe environmental impact. Further, the reduction, reuse and recycling ofpackaging material and the substitution of packaging processes mayenable significant cost cuttings in operations. Thus, technologicalleaps are arising in a multitude of areas with the aim to facilitate theindustry to meet the regulatory requirements, to reduce waterpollution and waste as well as to slow down climate change.

Receive detailed assessments of innovations in the field ofpackaging materials such as biodegradable polymer, packaging designslike palletizing without film and mono-material sealed cups as well as inthe area of technical equipment for packaging, sorting and recycling.Learn how to realize a stable and enough supply of sustainablematerials like recycled polymer pellets. The finding will assist you to meet competitively the requirements ofgovernmental regulations.

Circular Economy for Battery TechnologiesConsortium Project

Added Value

Batteries are omnipresent in everyday life and it is hard to imagine life withoutthem. The most advanced everyday battery, lithium ion batteries, powermobile phones, cars and many other mobile devices. However, they partlyconsist of the rare material lithium, which is mined under highenvironmentally harmful conditions. In terms of sustainability, the topic"Circular Economy of batteries" is gaining in importance and will beexamined in more detail in this project. In order to get a complete picture onthis topic, alternative battery concepts as well as the latest developments inthe field of charging technologies will be investigated.

The benefit of this project for you derives from the fact that you receive acurrent and structured trend and technology overview about batterylifecycle management (battery monitoring, performance prediction, recycling, etc.) as well as a technological and economic analysis of themost promising technologies. Network with our research partners and otherindustry participants to jointly find solutions for your company.

Use our three-step approach to identify new applications and new markets which can be served by your own key competencies with the aim to keep your utilization at an optimum: 1. Independent evaluation of your companies’ core competencies

(bilateral approach within partner companies)2. Analysis of company-specific components concerning their risk of

substitution 3. Identification a variety of new applications and markets to serve with

your core competencies in order to take your own business decisions

Diversification in Automotive IndustryConsortium Project

Added Value

Production in automotive industry is designed and optimized for high capacityutilization and high quantities. Due to the shift to e-mobility, manycomponents are substituted by alternative assemblies / components orbecome completely obsolete. Thus, this shift implies the risk of revenueloss or even a loss of existence. For companies affected by thiscircumstances it is crucial to be aware of the own core competencies inorder to serve new components and markets.

Logistics 4.0 & Digital SCMConsortium Project

Added Value

Industry experiences a strong shift from production-driven towardsmore customer-centric and data-driven approaches. Specifically,(intra)-logistic and supply chain processes offer a tremendousoptimization potential against this background. Lackingstandardization and the large number of non-transparent interfaces(physical and digital) generate avoidable costs and prevent companiesfrom efficiently meeting customer requirements in-time. Digitizationapproaches in SCM and logistics potentially offer relief to these pains.

Understand how these fundamental changes will affect your business: Understand the potential of automation in supply chain

processes and how to integrate potential solutions in industrial supply chains, freight transportation and (intra-)logistics processes

Cope with constantly increasing complexity, turnover quantity and customization requirements in the future

Added Value

By 2030, 25% of all working hours will be replaced by robots and automation, by 2055 even 50% of all working hours (Mc Kinsey). The timely approach of this issue is therefore of critical importance. This project will provide a structured and comprehensive overview on all robotics and automation solutions that are already available or in development. These solutions are then aligned with the requirements of your company in order to derive detailed technology cases in cooperation with experts.
