Our SponsorIncarnate Word High School was founded and is sponsored by the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, San Antonio. The mystery of the Incarnation is the foundation of their lives and the heart of their ministries. Dedicated to making real and tangible the saving and healing love of Jesus, the Incarnate Word, they serve God’s people around the world in education, health care, and pastoral and social services. In each ministry, they use their energy, expertise, and resources to respond to the needs of those they serve, promoting human dignity, peace and justice.

The Sisters’ ministries in the United States include:

EDUCATION University of the Incarnate Word Founded in 1881 as a center of higher education for women, the university is now one of the leading private Catholic universities in Texas. Committed to educational excellence in a context of faith, it serves both women and men. Incarnate Word High School One of the oldest all-girls’ Catholic college preparatory high schools in San Antonio, the school prepares young women to become confident and strong citizens of the global community. St. Anthony Catholic High School Founded in San Antonio in 1903 as a junior seminary, the school became one of the Sisters’ ministries in 1995 and now serves as a co-educational high school. ServiceService is an integral element of the Incarnate Word High School experience. Students have a graduation requirement of one hundred service hours, a minimum of 25 hours each year they are enrolled as a student. In the spirit of Christian service and social justice students are encouraged to identify the needs in the community and commit the greater percentage of service hours to those needs. These are some service highlights from 2014 - 2015:

Q Br. Frank Snider, SJC, mathematics teacher, and Tina Hernandez ‘15 were selected as the 2015 honorees of the CCVI Spirit Award. Br. Frank is a Senior class sponsor, a dedicated and compassionate instructor, who spends many hours before school, after school and on weekends helping his students as well as serving as the “Biggest Fan” for all our Shamrock Athletes. Tina Hernandez is a member of the Emerald Dolls Dance Team, helps plan school Masses and retreats as a Peer Minister and is an active member of St. Pius X Catholic Church.

Q For the past 14 years, the IWHS Sophomore have given their time and talent volunteering at the Davidson Respite House three Saturday’s a year and on Service Day. This year the Class of ’17 presented Davidson Respite House with a $500 donation earned through their traditional cookie dough fundraiser.

Q The National Honor Society volunteered at Kinetic Kids - sports and recreation for all (dis)abilities, UIW’s Light the Way, Street 2 Feet - Haven for Hope 5k, Dream Factory - blankets for hospital patients, St. Peter’s Prince of the Apostles Halloween Festival and at the San Antonio Academy Fall Festival.

Q As a branch of the national organization, the IWHS chapter of Pax Christi USA, Catholic Christian-based organization concerned with social justice issues and putting faith into action. This is done via volunteering for community service projects such as the Animal Shelter and The Village of incarnate Word, and by hosting an annual blanket & winter clothing drive.

Q IWHS participated in “SHARE in Africa: Empowering Girls through Education” as the Lenten Project for 2015. Together our students, faculty and staff donated the funds needed to sponsor 25 young woman with a one year scholarship to one of the best boarding schools in the region; Hekima Girls’ Secondary School.

Athletics 2015The focus of Incarnate Word’s athletic programs is to improve player’s performance by emphasizing skill development, tactical training, and improved fitness. Athletes make up 55% of our student body of which they participate in one to three sports per school year. As IWHS selects its talent from both sport-specific and multi-sport athletes, all three phases of training, as well as our core values, are inherent to the ongoing success of the program and to the mind, body and spirit of our athletes.

Incarnate Word High School provides students a variety of opportunities to grow in their faith while remaining true to the mission and the values established by the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word. These opportunities foster growth that continually guide young women on their spiritual journey.

Q Our campus ministry program offers many opportunities for community involvement. We offer liturgies, class retreats, music ministry, adoration, community rosary, spiritual formation and service. Students are invited to join music ministry, become peer ministers, and participate in all campus ministry events throughout the year. It is our hope that the spiritual formation our students receive at IWHS will have a lasting impact on the way they live out their faith for years to come.

Q IWHS celebrated Dia de los Muertos remembering the faithful departed by displaying cherished photos, personal items, marigold flowers, sugar skulls, and candles in honor of their loved ones on an alter located in Madeleine Hall.

Q As a part of Pope Francis’ call for “Interfaith dialogue,” Pax Christi USA has had guest speakers following the paths of faith/thought of Methodist Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Mormonism, and Atheism, as well as occasional presentations by Sr. Martha Ann Kirk, CCVI.

S H A M R O C K S F O R L I F ESERVICE - INTEGRITY - ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE - COMMUNITY OF FAITH - STEWARDSHIP - COMPASSION

CompassionCompassion, kindness and grace are prevalent at Incarnate Word High School through the actions of clubs, activities and daily student life. Listed below are some examples of the IWHS community modeling the core value of compassion:

Q Coach April Fricke successfully completed a 250 mile cycling adventure, following the same route taken by the first three Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word in 1869. The ride, from Freeport, TX to San Antonio, known as the “Sisters’ Trail”, continues to raise donations for the Friends of Christus Santa Rosa Foundation Mobile Mammography Program.

Q The IWHS community participated in many fundraising, awareness and community building activities including the Robotics Club - blood drives, Pax Christi USA’s – blanket and winter clothing drive and the STUCO food drive for San Antonio Catholic Charities.

Q Student Council presented a check for $5,000, the proceeds from the Back to School Dance, to Dr. Lisa Uribe-Kozlovsky ’82 Executive Director, Women’s Global in memory of co- founder Sr. Dorothy Ettling, CCVI. WGC is a ministry of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word.

Q Advent Project: Juniors and Seniors, collected food for the San Antonio Food Bank. Freshmen and Sophomores, collected toiletries and necessities for Visitation House (a sponsored ministry of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word addressing the needs and concerns of economically poor woman and children). Campus Ministry made a donation to RAICES (Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services) from their annual poinsettia fundraiser.

Q The World Geography classes participated as guests of the Holocaust Memorial Museum of San Antonio, where they participated in group discussions and attended a presentation by Holocaust survivor, Rose Williams.

Q Through the Kindness Campaign, created and inspired by former Guidance Counselor, Sharon Carlton, the IWHS community was invited to submit names of students or staff members who exhibited kindness. Each submission was displayed on a colorful, paper heart and hung in the main hallway. In addition, the IWHS community created and delivered 50 valentine cards and notes to the patients at the Children’s Hospital of San Antonio and at Santa Rosa Hospital and to the veterans at the Fisher House.
