Speed is an essential component for success. In the time-honoured way organisations, as they grew, added complexity to their execution models. Against this backdrop customers want answers, products and services – instantly. Technology has given us instant access to knowledge, communications and products. Yet the pace at which many organisations execute remains frighteningly slow by comparison, exasperating customers and losing many along the way. Change can be executed at great speed. Organisations can alter course provided the Apollo 13’s mantra, ‘We believe anything is possible’, is applied. At Incite we create Apollo 13 moments which generally blow a hole in most execution models. Not easy for sure – but neither was the success of the potentially fatal Apollo 13 mission. Tough – yes. Rewarding – absolutely.

“You don’t have any time to lose. The beauty... is that it really makes you focus on keeping up your business momentum.”

VELOCITY

Page 3: Incite

Professor Gary hamel says, ‘To create an organisation fit for the future we have to create an organisation fit for human beings.’ he is so right. The culture or the ‘environment’ has to be rewarding; people need to feel valued and they have to be able to achieve things on a daily basis. Sadly complexity and business prevention have been built into many organisations over the years. Consequently when times are tough and people can’t get ‘stuff ’ done then the workplace becomes a punishment, a demoralising experience and a place from which to escape. Talented people will be the first to leave and it will become increasingly difficult to hire. To parody JFK’s immortal words, ‘Ask not what you can do for your company; ask instead what your company can do for you.’ little grows in barren land – only a few weeds.

“I use Incite to drive a cultural change.”

CULTURE

“We’re a bunch of human beings with souls... we happen to be in a building called a corporation – it means nothing, this idea of ‘corporation’. The facts are that corporations are people. They’re not bricks. They’re not machines.”

The late Peter drucker said, ‘every organisation has to challenge everything it does’. This has never been so true as today. Organisations are facing out into the future amidst an increasingly hostile competition and an uncertain economic climate. Only occasionally do we experience real challenge – ‘challenge that rocks’. We don’t mean tidying up exercises that masquerade as change. We mean ‘Why are we in this or that business?’ or ‘This process sucks; we need to abandon it or fix it beyond imagination – quickly’. People, through their managers (controllers) have conditioned themselves not to challenge. Yet it is through vigorous and meaningful challenge that organisations will survive. Real challenge requires both courage and confidence – and the moment. incite creates the moment - not to be missed.

“The Incite experience allows people to say things they wouldn’t say in an office, challenge in a way they wouldn’t challenge in an office and that is the power of it.”

CHALLENGE“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.”

Few people or organisations can attract the label ‘dynamic’. Most would love the accolade. Yet all have the ability to be dynamic. I witness people’s eyes lighting up when we address this subject. So what is preventing this happening? Over time people have been conditioned to work within themselves and within their teams and businesses. Consequently ambition has been drilled out of them. It is so rewarding to see the fuse within people ignited and to watch their trajectory climb out of the dormant and mediocre to the new heights of high performance. The atmosphere is electric and contagious. The Incite challenge is to turn this into an epidemic.

“After 3 days.... most importantly there is a self belief that they can achieve so much more. They are now ready for a much higher level of performance. I don’t think any other course would have given them that.”

DYNAMISM

Page 6: Incite

If there was an award for silo management and behaviour it would be fiercely contested. Alignment and the need for effective collaboration across relevant functions is now a critical challenge in all organisations. In fact continued non-alignment will not only put future earnings at risk but possibly place the very survival of the business in jeopardy. The Red Arrows, the RAF’s world class fast jet formation team, don’t just ask 9 pilots to take to the skies in the hope that they can fly together. It takes vision, planning, perseverance, brilliance, will, courage and world class communication and feedback. To be fit for the future ‘flying in close formation’ is a prerequisite for success. Ignore this at your peril.

“We have a much more joined-up business. People now understand how what they do impacts somebody else in a different part of the business. If they understand that then we can all understand how we can provide a better service to our clients.”

As competition increases ‘edge’ matters. It matters to teams and organisations alike. The word ‘differentiation’ is the clever word, but ‘edge’ is better. Without it you die. To be a class act you need an edge. It can be achieved through strategic brilliance, product innovation or the ability to execute like no other. At Incite’s very core is our ability to work with clients to discover or create ‘edge’ that will take them to a new place in the ladder towards success. It certainly takes inspirational leadership coupled with courageous determination to overcome the internal and external threats. It is this ability to set the bar at a much higher level and convince everyone it is achievable which sets world class leaders from the rest. Only those who can rise to this level will see the promised land. We apply our edge to help others find theirs.

“When you are running a business you are looking for ‘edge’... something different, something dynamic and something to make people think differently.”

EDGE“Come to the edge. We might fall. Come to the edge. It’s too high! Come to the edge! And they came, and he pushed... and they flew.”
