LIVINGLIVING ON-SITE

Page 6: INCLUDING ACADEMIC INDUCTION AND FRESHERS’ WEEK WEL …€¦ · Most people find the end of Freshers’ Week the most challenging because that’s when the work begins and the party

University life can be quite demanding so it is important that you get the right balance of work and play. From the moment you arrive on campus Freshers’ Week begins, presenting plenty of opportunities to socialise with fellow students and get to know those who you will be living and studying with.

LIVING OFF-SITE

10.

A bus service from Gloucester / Tewkesbury / Bishops Cleeve and Cheltenham operates regularly during term time. There is a charge of between £1.50 and £2.00 for a single journey (2016/17 prices) and between £2.40 and £3.20 for a return journey. If you purchase 10 tickets in advance there is a discount. The current bus timetable and charges will be available from the Transport Office and Student Services from 1st September 2017 and can be found on www.hartpury.ac.uk under the transport section.

Andycars are providing a special Freshers’ Week rate for Hartpury students, at only £10 for a four seater taxi into Hartpury from your off-site accommodation. To qualify for this rate, quote Hartpury Freshers’ Week to the driver, or when you book your cab. After Freshers’ Week, this rises to £12, which is a special Hartpury student rate.

Page 7: INCLUDING ACADEMIC INDUCTION AND FRESHERS’ WEEK WEL …€¦ · Most people find the end of Freshers’ Week the most challenging because that’s when the work begins and the party

10.1. Don’t be a stranger – get involved with social events running throughout the year at Legends Bar. By volunteering you can gain free entry to events, plus other goodies. Contact Jake Marks for details. You can find his office upstairs in the Student Zone.

2. Get to know your surroundings – bars and clubs are good fun, but make sure you also know the area you live in so you can make your way home safely.

3. Get to know the Swanbrook bus service. If you don’t have your own transport, this is essential for you to get in and out of college AND the bus drivers are lovely. Timetables are available online via www.hartpury.ac.uk or swanbrook.co.uk

4. Build up a network of taxi numbers in your mobile – even if you live just around the corner, never underestimate how useful a taxi can be to get home on a rainy night. AndyCars 01452 523000 (preferential rates for Hartpury students) – (£12 to Gloucester or £25 to Cheltenham)

5. Make the most of Freshers’ Week and attend every event. The events are designed for you to get to know each other and form friendships that are going to last throughout your degree. And it is a great excuse to break the ice.

6. Don’t drink too much. As welcoming as the pub is, make sure you spend some time in the library.

7. Do attend your lectures. Believe it or not, the first few weeks of lectures are the foundation to a long year ahead. So do some studying, even if you are nursing a hangover from the night before!

8. Use Social media. Add people you met the night before and chat to them online. But remember to meet up with them in person too.

9. Make sure you compare prices between supermarkets and shop around in town for better deals. Your money has to last you, so don’t be shy of Poundland.

10. Most importantly, be yourself, smile (a lot) and talk to everyone. This is your university and your degree. Make the most of every opportunity that comes your way!

TOP TEN TIPS

And after Freshers’ Week?It is advisable to attend and, therefore, buy tickets for as many Hartpury events as you can when you first arrive (tickets can be purchased from Legends Bar), or you can buy a wristband that will give you discounts on events. These are available on the online shop. Past experience tells us that your student loan will disappear rather quickly once you get here. Learning to plan your finances on either a weekly or monthly basis is a good idea.

And finally...You need to remember that you are now in new surroundings, which may well be very different from those you are used to. Please do not assume that because you are in student accommodation that it is okay to leave your bedroom door unlocked like you would at home, or your valuables unattended in your new lodgings. Please remember to lock your door every time you leave your room. Unfortunately, while we try to make all of our student accommodation as safe and secure as possible, it is advisable to always be on your guard and avoid taking any risks. Be very careful who you let into your accommodation, and if you see something suspicious make sure you report it as soon as possible.

Page 8: INCLUDING ACADEMIC INDUCTION AND FRESHERS’ WEEK WEL …€¦ · Most people find the end of Freshers’ Week the most challenging because that’s when the work begins and the party

Most people find the end of Freshers’ Week the most challenging because that’s when the work begins and the party atmosphere calms down. This is when it is important to join in with as many new clubs and activities as possible to keep you busy and help to continue improving your social network. We try to cater for all our students and their interests. There will be a range of entertainment and activities on offer throughout the year as well as fortnightly weekend trips off campus. However, if you think there is something missing or a club that you would like to start, then please let us know. No suggestion will be ignored.

We offer a range of different clubs, activities and entertainment once you arrive on campus, which run throughout the week to keep you busy. These range from pub quizzes, movie and curry nights to exercise classes, swimming trips and a whole variety of sports which anyone can join in with. We try to cater for all our students so different clubs and groups start up each year. Legends Bar is the central point for all our university students and that is where you can relax and pick up a drink or snack. This is also where you can find out what is going on. If you are looking to get involved in something different, there are several people you can talk to, to gain advice on what is going on:

There is…

Jake Marks, Student Experience Manager Hartpury Students’ Union Jenny Arroud, Hartpury Active Co-ordinator

They are all based in the Student Experience Office situated in the the Student Zone.

There are several Hartpury Facebook groups/pages which we strongly suggest you conect with. There are accommodation pages, a Legends Bar page, where you can find out what’s happening, as well as subject pages and sports groups. Social media is a really good way to get to know people and keep up-to-date with what’s happening around campus.

Don’t forget the online shop where you can purchase:

Clothing Credit for your meal card Your parking permit if you want to park on-site Horse feed

Trips and visits And much more!

To buy all of the above, including the permit that you’ll need to park on-site, go to www.hartpury.ac.uk/shop
