Better Life for All, with Global KOICA

KOICA (Korea International Cooperation Agency) is Korea’s development coopera-tion agency dedicated to enhancing prosperity through inclusive and sustainable growth. Founded on 1 April 1991 as a government bilateral agency responsible for implementing grants, KOICA manages its ODA programs through its country offices in 44 partner countries.

Inclusive and Sustainable Rural Development: Saemaul Undong

1 For Sustainable and Inclusive Development

Saemaul Undong is an inspiration for development for people in rural and marginalized communities and people living in poverty and desperation. Saemaul Undong is targetingsustainable and inclusive development in line with SDGs such as education, women empowerment, human rights and climate change

2 By Spirit Saemaul Undong has a slogan which translates to “Can Do Spirit.” The guiding principles of Saemaul Undong “diligence, self-help and cooperation” not only encourage people’s voluntary participation and ownership, but also promote governance at the local, national and global levels. In order to formulate a development plan by way of village meetings, people’s sense of responsibility and ownership is strengthened

3 With Smartness In accordance with the 21th Century’s development environment, Saemaul Undong progresses by upgrading development strategies. SMU adopts the value chain model and supports producers not only at the input and production stage but also at the processing and market-ing stage. The application of appropriate technology and innovate technology that is most suitable and optimal for local environments can help increase income and boost the capacity of local communities. Working together with diverse partners, including international organizations, INGOs, businesses and banks, SMU will be adapted to many countries in smart ways

The rural development model, Saemaul Undong (New Village Movement), 45 years ago played a critical role in enabling Korea to eradicate poverty. Now we wish to share Korea’s development experience with a world that needs it. Since 70 percent of the world’s extreme poor live in rural areas, rural development will be essential to meet the SDGs. Saemaul Undong provides valuable lessons to achieving the SDGs

HEALTHY LIFE FOR HUMAN DIGNITY CLIMATE-RESILIENT LIFE FOR ALL INCLUSIVE GROWTH THROUGH SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY & INNOVATION

We believe that healthy life is not only a basic human need but also an essential human right. Global Health Security Agenda aims to secure healthy life from the threat of infectious diseases by improving health security capabilities of part-ner countries. Out of the 11 action packages set by the GHSA, KOICA will focus on three action plans to support and con-tribute to disease control and health security of partner countries

Climate change is considered to be a fundamental threat to development. Developing countries currently experience se-vere climate-related disasters every year and will be enormously affected by climate change in the future. KOICA will focus on four dimensions to combat climate change in partner countries

KOICA recognizes the great potential of STI as a critical means of inclusive growth. KOICA aims to support such global development efforts through a three-pronged approach: Building the capacity of science and technology personnel; strengthening innovation systems in partner countries; fostering and mobilizing STI capacity of private partners in and out of Korea
