STRATEGIES FOR SUCCESS
OrganizationDeveloping effective self-management practices is a lifelong endeavor integral to success not just in high school but in life. To develop effective organizational routines and use them to support academic success and college and career readiness is essential for a successful student. Students can learn and implement this by organizing folders in their Google drive and using the calendar on Canvas.
Time ManagementAt the center of skills and routines for organizing time is a tool to support time management. Using a tool such as your google calendar as part of a robust organizational system is critical to balancing activities, projects, and study time. If you struggle with the digital platform, the old fashioned planner is the best route to go! Don’t underestimate this critical tool!
Studying SkillsThis will be a lifelong approach to learning that will develop throughout one’s life. It is important for students to consistently evaluate their studying habits to determine if how they study is appropriate for their classes. Students can discuss best studying habits with their teachers and how to effectively utilize their resources. Approaches like flash cards and repetition still work! Many students are losing the understanding of the importance of memorization and practice in favor of instant answers from google and internet searches.
![Page 24: INCOMING 9TH GRADE ACADEMIC NIGHT](https://reader031.vdocument.in/reader031/viewer/2022012018/615c29d2a9d1440113465e96/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
SUPPORTING STUDENTS FOR SUCCESS
• Check Skyward and Canvas regularly. Is your student turning in assignments on time? How well is your student testing? Check your student’s attendance (and potential tardies). Keep open communication with your child regarding grades and assignments.
• Encourage your child to speak directly with their teacher. Ask them to stay after the dismissal bell or get to class early before the late bell to speak with their teacher. Ask your child for an update on how the conversation went to determine if further action is needed.
• If possible, have your student attend a tutoring session in that subject area. We offer tutoring options in most core courses, however, many of our teachers conduct their own sessions.
• Next would be to contact the teacher directly yourself. The staff directory is listed on our website.
• If there is still a concern or a trend across multiple classes, you would schedule a parent/teacher conference with your student’s school counselor.
Remember that the end goal is not just about their grade. Students should be working to develop academic and self-advocacy skills as well as problem-solving abilities.
![Page 25: INCOMING 9TH GRADE ACADEMIC NIGHT](https://reader031.vdocument.in/reader031/viewer/2022012018/615c29d2a9d1440113465e96/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
STUDENT SCHEDULES
● Students schedules will be built and reviewed through the summer. We may need to adjust course requests depending on student data. Students will have the opportunity review and request course changes during the Return of the Pride through the first week of school.
● We do not change classes for lunch, specific periods, or specific teacher requests..
● All students will be scheduled into a College & Career Pathway of their choice.
● In order to have a reduced day senior year, students will need to have earned at least 1 acceleration point at LNHS to show that they are College & Career ready. Students earn acceleration by passing an AP exam, passing an industry certification exam(s), or completing a course through the Valencia, UCF, UF, or FIU Dual Enrollment program. Students will also need to be on track for all graduation requirements including passing Algebra 1 EOC and ELA FSA, a 2.0 GPA, and be scheduled in all required courses.
