In 1973 Courtaulds took over with a turnover of £15 million and 1000 employees. This building was later converted into the Rosemary Centre complex of offices and shops which opened in 1984. Shops currently trading in the centre are Argos, Store Twenty One, Lloyds Pharmacy, Domino Pizza, Slacks News and Iceland. Iceland was once a ‘Fulham’s Frozen Food’ shop and over the years has expanded taking over the Fulham’s and Coral’s bookies. They have a bonus card that gives out vouchers as prizes on a monthly basis and acts as a card for free home delivery. Did you know that Iceland used to trade from inside the Littlewoods Store which is now Primark? The back of the Rosemary Centre and access to the car park is off Union Street which except for the Golf Support shop and Bilton Hammond Solicitors is now a residential street. Way back in1912 the street according to the Linneys Almanack and Diary for that year was made up of many small businesses including a grocery store, joiner, builder, bricklayer, fruiterer, draper, guard, whitesmith, plumber, firewood dealer, mineral waters, Sanson Bros Union Foundry and the Hope and Anchor Inn. Foster Bilton & Co. (Mansfield) merged with Alfred Slack & Co. (Chesterfield). The combined Partnership traded under its separate names until 2001 when it adopted its new name of Bilton Hammond. Bilton Hammond converted to an LLP on the 1st April 2005. Foster Bilton & Co. can trace its origins back to approximately1930 and Alfred Slack can trace its origins back even further to1890. The company specialise in three main practice areas, crime, family law and property. The Business Centre The North Notts Business Centre houses a number of offices which many businesses operate from. This is situated on Rosemary Street, behind the Rosemary Centre. Also at the rear of the centre is the office for Associated Corporation Ltd., access can be gained via the centre’s car park. It was with money he was given for his 19th birthday that William purchased tools and leather and started up his own business making and repairing boots and shoes. Two of William’s sons Kenneth and Colin carried on the business for many years. Kenneth retired in the 1970’s and Colin continued to run the business until ill health forced him to finish work and the business was taken over by John who had only just turned eighteen. John further developed the outdoor equipment retail side of the business. In 2002 the business celebrated their centenary and they were very proud to receive a letter from the Queen to acknowledge their achievement. Secret of success The business keeps growing and evolving into new markets which John Slack says “is one of our secrets of success. We hope that in another hundred years W Slack and Sons will be trading as a family business living up to our motto, Service and Satisfaction”. The business will celebrate their 110 year anniversary this August. Originally the business started making surgical shoes and made to measure footwear. William previously worked at Mansfield Shoe Co. but when his hard work was unrewarded he left.
