HOWDY GLACURH!

Dear Regional Board of Directors of the Great Lakes Affiliate

It is with utmost excitement and respect that I submit this bid for the position of GLACURH Regional Advisor. Beyond my skills and experiences, it is my belief and support in the work that NACURH Inc. has done, and continues to do, and a desirable passion to see our region flourish to its fullest potential.

During my Student Affairs tenure, I have had the privilege to serve as a residential life student affairs professional in various roles and facets. In the capacity of my roles as Assistant Hall Director, Residence Hall Director, and currently as a Program Director for our Honors Living Learning Community. My passion for the field of student affairs was developed on the campus of San Diego State University where I was introduced to the Residence Hall Association, and had the opportunity to experience of NACURH at the Pacific Affiliates 2007 Regional Conference. From NCC, to a Central Staff Residence Life employee my love for NACURH and its affiliates has never faded. The day in and day out of my roles have consisted of management; of people, budgets, facilities, polices. Every year since leaving San Diego State I have given back time through the art of advising. My time in the regions of PACURH, MACURH, and now GLACURH have provided me an experience that allows me to bring a breadth of skills and passion to you, our region, and our overall organization..

As an Advisor to various student organizations I have had the opportunity to work directly with engaging students in various developmental and involvement opportunities within their residence hall and campus communities, all which assist in their acclimation and matriculation. Through my role as an advisor I have made a commitment to mentor and foster relationships that challenge, encourage, and inspire the diverse student leaders I work with.

As a professional staff advisor I have had the privilege of being part of transforming the student experience through the advising of organizations and program committees. Programs ranging from trainings and retreats to campus wide cultural fashion shows, lectures, banquets, homecoming week, Safe Zone, drag shows, and benefit events. As a resourceful advisor I have had the privilege of partnering with offices such as the Office of Inclusion and Intercultural Relations, New Student Programs, International Student & Scholar Services, Dining Services, etc. Advising has been one highlight of my career thus far, as it truly connects my passions of retention, mentoring, social justice, and inclusion.

A few words from the GLACURH Strategic Plan that resonated with me was your desires to increase knowledge, fundraise, promotion, and service. I am excited for the opportunity to be able to help build an innovative and collaborative experience for current and future members, leaders, and advisors in our region. In this position I will strive to assist students in the development of their own GLACURH story.

Respectfully,

Brian J. Moffitt

Letter to the Region

I advise because I want to.

Going into graduate school I have consistently sought out opportunities to advise students. Advising many times falls outside of the job description, but it is my way of giving back. Giving back to systems and opportunities that helped in the development of the leader you see today.

I advise because I need to.

My students are more than a case load, my students are more than a customer, my students are part of my story, and their stories are what sustain me in my daily work. My work as an advisor is about relationship building, skill building, and character development. My work as an advisor is

transformational, for both the student and I.

I advise because they need me.

I believe that advisors have the chance to truly inspire student leaders, and help them become who and what they want to become. Advising has allowed me to coach hundreds of students

who been part of the student organizations I have served in the last 7 years. Advising is demanding and challenging, but most importantly it has been rewarding.

I advise to support a voice.

I believe in the power of student voice, and I believe in the student’s right to organize. I create space, opportunity, and time for students to engage in their own expression no matter the idea.

As an advisor I challenge my students to be fully engaged, and be willing to critically examine structures, policies, and practices to enhance their experience. I challenge students to also

consider the missing voice at the table.

I Advise…
