What Exactly Is A Dental Veneer?

A dental veneer is a shell, or layer of tooth-coloured porcelain or composite. It is placed over the front surface of your teeth to fix worn teeth, uneven tooth alignment or spacing, discolouration and chips or cracks. A crown is like a veneer, but covers the full circumference and biting surface of a tooth.

Although veneers and crowns fall into the category of cosmetic dentistry, because they create bright, white smiles with beautifully aligned, shapely teeth, they also protect the surface of damaged teeth and may eliminate the need for more extensive treatments. Other benefits include durability, an improved smile and often protection to the underlying tooth from biting forces when broken down.

4 Reasons Why You Would Need A Veneer

Regardless of what causes unattractive teeth, den-tal veneers and crowns may solve most, or even all of your cosmetic dental issues, including:

    1) Worn enamel: Over time, the thin, hard translu-cent substance covering your teeth (enamel) may become worn, dulled and discoloured. Such wear and discolouration may be natural or result from a genetic predisposition. However, it often results from consuming soft drinks; tea and coffee; smok-ing; using certain medications, etc.

    2) Wear and tear: Teeth naturally wear down as people age. Aged teeth are more likely to have chips, cracks or a generally uneven appearance.

    3) Genetics: Certain people are born with abnormal spacing between their teeth that widens with age.

    4) Uneven teeth: Uneven teeth can result from tooth grinding or general wear and tear.

This is a good place to briefly, but

    effectively, describe your product or

    Are You Suitable For Veneers?

The removal of any natural tooth structure is permanent, so today, cosmetic dentists prefer to offer patients the most minimally invasive options first. If your natural teeth are functionally and aesthetically adequate, veneers or crowns may not be an appro-priate treatment for you.

However, if you have severely dull or discoloured teeth you may be a good candidate for veneers. They are clinically proven to be long-lasting and enhance the appearance of the lips, smile and other facial features that are better supported by properly shaped teeth. To determine if you are a candidate for dental veneers or crowns, your dentist will schedule a preliminary consultation during which your oral health will be evaluated and all available treatment options discussed.

Treatment involving tooth preparation is irreversible, so your dentist will discuss any alternatives that provide the same results, but with minimal to no removal of tooth structure. If you and your dentist decide that veneers or crowns are the best option, the next step involves a thorough review of treatment details, including preparing your teeth for your specific procedure and what will be necessary for them to look and fit correctly.

Finally, during your consultation you will actively participate in the ‘smile design pro-cess’. Sharing your preferences for the shape, length, width and colour of the restora-tion, and the change in the appearance of your smile that you want your dentist to cre-ate, helps ensure that your treatment will meet your expectations. It is important that your dentist understands your objectives when undergoing a veneers procedure.

The Treatment – What To Expect

The dental veneer and crown procedure can often be completed in 2 visits over the course of 2-6 weeks. The visits are comprehensive and may require a few hours of ex-amination and tooth preparation. We boast amenities that include sedation dentis-try, and audio/visual equipment to keep you entertained during the procedure.

The diagnostic and examination phase of treatment is essential and identifies any oral health concerns that must first be addressed before restoration placement. We will also work with you to select the best tooth colour for you from a special shade chart.

Imaging technologies can provide you with a preview of your expected results, and ‘before and after’ images provide opportunity to view other successful cases. Treat-ment begins when the examination is completed and the customised plan designed.

There are several steps in the procedure. First, your dentist will likely administer a lo-cal anaesthetic so you will be comfortable during tooth preparation and placement of the veneer or crown. Your natural tooth is then prepared by minimally reshaping it with a small handheld rotational cutting device, called a bur, to provide the best fit.

Once the correct preparation has been completed your dentist will make an impression of your teeth from which a mould of your mouth will be made. This impression may be sent to an outside dental laboratory where the veneers will be professionally made.

Once a mould is taken your veneers

    can then be professionally created

Previewing Your New Crowns & Veneers

Prototype veneers and crowns provide a preview of the expected outcome. If your treatment involves one or a couple of teeth, and enough enamel remains on the sur-face, your dentist may forgo the temporary process.

However, after your teeth are shaped they may be slightly more sensitive to hot and cold due to the loss of enamel during tooth prepa-ration.

Increased sensitivity may also occur if you have temporaries placed, and for a brief time following placement of the final restoration.

During the placement appointment, your dentist will remove the prototypes and place your final restorations, after which they will be evaluated and adjusted to ensure the optimal fit and colour.

    Maintaining Your Veneers & Crowns

Veneers and crowns are durable and have been shown to last for many years before requiring replacement. Seeing your dentist and hygienist for regular examinations and dental cleanings is essential for maintaining the health of your mouth and longevity of your restorations.

Aftercare is extremely important. Chipped or fractured porcelain veneers can rarely satisfactorily be repaired, so your dentist will advise you of the costs and added time associated with replacing a damaged restoration.

To reduce the risk of damage, do not bite or chew on hard objects such as nutshells or bones, and do not use your teeth to open or tear packages. Your dentist may advise you to avoid certain foods that could cause damage.

Brush and floss your teeth as you normally would, and be sure to use a non-abrasive toothpaste. Because veneers are highly polished, the risk of staining them with food or drink after the procedure is complete is greatly reduced. However, brushing after drinking red wine, coffee, tea or soda is advisable.

Care must be taken not to abuse veneers because the thin porcelain shells or compo-site layers can be damaged or break.

I’ve Heard About Cosmetic Bonding, What Is It?

Cosmetic bonding, often called resin bonding, is when a tooth-coloured resin is bond-ed to your teeth, then sculpted into the proper shape. The resin is a composite of liq-uid acrylic and tiny particles of glass. The composite resin forms a durable, stain-resistant surface that can be polished to mimic the texture of your natural teeth.

With advances in modern dentistry, there is no reason you should be unhappy with the way that your teeth look. Psychologists have proven that a beautiful smile enhances your personal appearance and improves your self-confidence. If you don’t like your teeth, cosmetic bonding may be the right solution for you!

In the past, if your tooth was chipped, stained or cracked, you would probably receive a crown. Today bonding is a quick and easy solution for many of these problems.

For example, by lightly filling a tooth on one side and building it up on the other, your dentist can eliminate the gap from a gap-toothed grin. By adding thickeners to vary the consistency, dentists can use the resin-like clay to restore chipped or broken teeth. In fact, worn or darkened “silver” fillings can be replaced with tooth-coloured bonding materials that are indistinguishable from your natural tooth enamel.

Bonding is used to whiten stained teeth, to stabilise loose teeth, and to replace miss-ing teeth. With resin bonding, you can change the colour, the shape and the position of your teeth, improving your smile. While bonding is a wonderful technique, it will not solve all restorative dental problems. Where a large portion of the tooth surface is damaged, a veneer or crown may be more advisable.

What Is The Procedure For Cosmetic Bonding?

Because the tooth surface is left intact, bonding isn’t painful and doesn’t harm the tooth. The procedure is normally completed without local anaesthetic or tooth prepa-ration, this means no injections or drilling. In most cases, bonding requires only one vis-it to the dentist once the planning has been completed. A further appointment may be required to allow the teeth to hydrate prior to final polishing for optimal results.

To bond a tooth, the surface of the tooth is treated with a specific dental liquid. This creates micro pores in the enamel, making the tooth more porous and receptive to the plastic bonding material. Next, the soft, pliable resin is spread over the tooth in layers. A bright beam of light locks the resins onto the tooth surface. Each layer hardens in minutes. After the last coat has been applied and hardened, the bonded material is shaped and polished. The resin comes in many shades. Your dentist will match the res-in to the shade of your natural teeth.

    Are There Any Disadvantages?

The acrylic materials used in bonding do not last as long as porcelain. The bonded plas-tic coating can break off if you bite down on something hard or accidentally fall and bump your tooth. Bonds can last many years but are more susceptible to stains com-pared to your natural teeth.

Smoking cigarettes, drinking tea or coffee, and even eating blueberries may cause some discolouration. This can be managed by reducing consumption of these coupled with regular hygienist visits with air-flow polishing.

Tooth Whitening For A Brighter, Whiter Smile

You Don’t Need To Hide Your Teeth Any More!

Tooth whitening is perhaps the most commonly recommended cosmetic dentistry pro-cedure. It can reliably and successfully lighten teeth which have darkened due to age changes, staining by tea, coffee, red wine etc.

Teeth whitening is a simple, safe and effective, non-invasive treatment which is grow-ing in popularity as more and more people, young and not so young, are experienc-ing the benefits that it brings.

What Is Involved With Tooth Whitening?

The technique involves taking impressions of your teeth and getting laboratory made, custom bleaching trays. Tooth whitening gel is then applied to the trays which are fit-ted to the teeth. The trays hold the gel on the teeth and with time the teeth lighten. The more often you apply the gel the lighter the teeth will go.

    How Long Will It Take?

Generally the effects can be seen within one week for the in-office technique and in about one month for the home bleaching technique. Some stains, like those caused by antibiotics, may require a prolonged course of treatment.

    How Long Will It Last?

This depends on your lifestyle (tea, coffee, red wine etc.), but generally the effects should last up to 2 years. We advise patients to keep their bleaching trays and addition-al tubes of the tooth whitening can be purchased for a ‘top-up’ as required.

Will It Affect My Fillings Or Crowns?

No, there will be no colour change to existing fillings (silver or white), crowns, veneers, inlays, bridgework etc. Some restorations may need to be replaced if they do not match the new colour of your teeth.
