We’re here to support you through these challenging times.

The Indefinite Arts Centre team has been coming together to brainstorm and test new ways to support our artists – because you are amazing and you deserve it! We’re thrilled to share some highlights of our new programs that will be rolled out in the coming days and weeks.

CALL US, EMAIL US, REACH OUT TO US.

During our closure, our team is still here for you. If you are an IAC artist, family member, support worker, supportive roommate, or other, and you want to share your ideas, have questions about our upcoming programs, or just need support – we are here. Call Kyra at 403.253.3174 x 0 and she can direct your call to a studio facilitator or staff member. Or email us at [email protected] and we will forward your inquiry and respond.

Make sure you’re connected with us to receive regular updates.

The best way to stay informed of any new programs, online events and other initiatives is through our Facebook or Twitter pages. We also ask all artists, family members, support workers, supportive roommates, and others to subscribe to our mailing list.

Note that all activities and resources will be made available online, along with an event calendar so you know what kind of content to expect each week! Visit www.ouriac.ca and click on “Indefinite Arts Centre + You.”

YOU ARE AN ARTIST AND A HISTORIANHow do artists record and respond to events and changes?

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

Computer, tablet, or smartphone with internet connectivity

D E S C R I P T I O N

Over the coming weeks, we will be working with you with the theme of Artist as Historian. Historians record important events that have had an impact on our lives and you as artists can play an important role here.

Congratulations you are all now historians!

Historical accounts can be day-to-day activities, such as journal entries, sketchbook drawings, photos, creative writing, paintings, sculptures.

How might you as an Indefinite Arts Centre artist contribute to an understanding of what’s currently happening on a local and personal level? How have artists responded to historical events in the past? How do contemporary artists continue to shape and record the culture of our time?

The following ongoing initiatives will help you formulate your role as an artist and historian.

Whether in museums or galleries, exhibitions tell a story and shape narratives. Artists are natural storytellers, and here we will explore the ways museums and exhibitions can help tell those stories. We will provide information about accessible and digital ways our artists can explore online exhibitions while we outline how exhibitions can enliven their experience as artists.

Explore historic and contemporary examples of how artists have shared the stories of their time. Each post will provide background information on a particular artist, accompanied by images of their artwork. The content will be compiled by each of our IAC Studio Facilitators, who will provide their personal connection to the artist (i.e. why they consider them to be important to their art practice). Providing context and examples will help show how we as artists can participate in these historical conversations.

Art prompts are all about provoking interesting and creative responses! Our Art Prompts series will be simple, compelling, and amusing instructions to help fuel the imaginations of our artists.

Similar to other examples of instruction-based projects from, for instance, the Fluxus art movement and Nova Scotia’s College of Art and Design’s experimental Projects Class, rough guidelines will be presented in ways that will allow our artists to engage in any way they see fit. These prompts will not only introduce artists to these historical types of artistic experimentation, but they will promote a playful way to work out, or through, new kinds of art-making processes!

FLUX KITS: YOUR TOOLKIT TO WORK ON PROJECTS FROM HOME.

Coming soon – all Indefinite Arts Centre artists will receive “flux kits” that will help you work on an exciting new project.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

No computer necessary.

Look forward to getting your kit in the mail!

F L U X K I T S

Our Indefinite Art Studio Facilitators have assembled our very own version of a Flux Kit! The Flux Kit was first developed in 1962 by George Macjunas, a prominent artist in the transcontinental Fluxus movement. These artist-delivered kits consisted of a scattering of objects and instructions, assembled in a box, and distributed. Received through the mail, our IAC Flux Kits will promote an interesting way to engage with art-making as well as learn more about another important movement in art history. We’re using these kits as another way of stimulating your sense of participation while away from the IAC studio space!
