DESCRIPTION:Karnak #16AF Double Coverage Cement is manufactured from a blend of selected asphalts, mineral fillers and refined solvents. This composition is then passed through a high speed mixer which provides a smooth consistency product, free of foreign matter and lumps.

SPECIFICATIONS:ASTM D-3019 Type III

SURFACE PREPARATION:Karnak #16AF Double Coverage Cement is applied by brush, broom or squeegee. The area to be coated must be free and clean of all debris, dust and dirt.

COVERAGE:Under normal conditions, Karnak #16AF Double Coverage Cement should be applied at the rate of 2 to 3 gallons per 100 sq. ft.

CAUTION:Do not use near open flame. Avoid breathing solvent fumes and prolonged contact with skin. Do not take internally. If swallowed, do not induce vomiting. Call a physician immediately. Keep out of reach of children. Keep container covered when not in use. Do not thin. Dispose of in an environmentally safe manner. Cover air intakes during application and while drying.

CARE OF TOOLS:Tools may be thoroughly cleaned after use with mineral spirits or petroleum solvents, taking the due precautions necessary when handling combustible materials.

Designed for application by trowel #18AF is a durable, elastic cement with excellent adhesion and weathering characteristics . This product when applied dries to a tough, flexible, water resistant and corrosion proof coating that provides excellent performance over a wide range of temperature and weather conditions.

Excellent for sealing cracks in concrete, brick, as a joint filler for pre-cast roof slabs and general purpose use in maintenance of exposed buildings and structures.

APPLICATION:Spread Karnak #18AF Perfectseal Plastic Cement to an average thickness of 1/8” (approximately 8 gallons per square) and press tightly into joints, seams or cracks. To repair large cracks, breaks and blisters, spread Karnak #18AF Perfectseal Plastic Cement over the damaged area, then embed Karnak Cotton, Glass or Poly-Mat Membrane reinforcement and then apply another coat of Karnak #18AF Perfectseal Plastic Cement over the entire patch.

DESCRIPTION:Karnak #27AF Fibered Perfectseal Aluminum Exterior Coating is made of selected asphalts and pigment flakes of pure aluminum, blended with petroleum solvents and mineral fibers. When Karnak #27AF Fibered Perfectseal Aluminum Exterior Coat-ing is applied to the roof, the aluminum flakes leaf to the surface, forming a reflec-tive, metallic shield over the base material.

The advantages of this metallic aluminum shield are twofold:

A. The asphaltic oils in the base coating are protected from harmful intense rays of the sun by the reflective properties of the aluminum. Over 50% of the sun’s rays are reflected by this aluminum shield, thereby preventing these oils from being “cooked” out of the base coating. The coating, therefore, retains its resilient char-acteristics and will not prematurely crack or dry out.

B. During the hot summer months, Karnak #27AF Fibered Perfectseal Aluminum Exterior Coating will help reduce indoor building temperatures and improve inside living and working conditions. Karnak #27AF Fibered Perfectseal Alumi-num Exterior Coating prevents the sun’s rays from penetrating the roof coating and passing the heat into the building interior.

The combination of these protective materials - aluminum, asphalt and reinforcing fibers - by the exclusive Karnak process results in a self-protecting roof coating with longer-lasting moisture and heat resistant features. Karnak #27AF Fibered Perfect-seal Aluminum Exterior Coating remains tenaciously bonded to the base material, thus assuring longer roof life, with subsequent savings on roof maintenance.

New asphalt roof surfaces should weather a minimum of 90 days before being coated with Karnak #27AF Fibered Perfectseal Aluminum Exterior Coating. However, Karnak #27AF Fibered Perfectseal Aluminum Exterior Coating can be coated on roofs 3 to 5 days after Karnak asphalt emulsions have been applied. Badly weathered or alligatored asphalt surfaces should be primed with Karnak 100AF Non-Fibered Emulsion or 220AF Fibered Emulsion prior to coating with 27AF Fibered Aluminum Coating. Allow emulsion primer to cure a minimum of 3-5 days before application of aluminum coating.

This could have a damaging effect on the leafing of the aluminum. Pour the correct amount of aluminum coating to cover a given area and apply uniformly. Be sure to mechanically mix the aluminum coating thoroughly before using. Karnak #27AF Fibered Perfectseal Aluminum Exterior Coating can be applied with a soft roof brush, roller or spray.

COVERAGE:Apply at the rate of 1 to 1.5 gallons per 100 sq. ft.

CARE OF TOOLS:Tools and other equipment should be thoroughly cleaned after use with mineral spir-its, taking the necessary precautions when handling combustible materials.

Note: Coating Modified Bitumen Membranes with Aluminum Coatings

Karnak recommends coating modified bitumen membranes as soon as possible after the membrane is installed.

Karnak’s experience, laboratory and field tests, as well as NRCA, RCMA and ARMA reports, indicate that aluminum coating will reduce the combined effects of ultraviolet rays, heat and moisture, which, especially on APP modified bitumens, enhance exudation that can cause discoloring and delamination of any surface coating.

COLD-PROCESS SYSTEMS AND COATINGS, EITHER EMULSION OR SOLVENT BASED, SHOULD ONLY BE INSTALLED ON DECKS WITH POSITIVE DRAINAGE.

DESCRIPTION:Karnak #66AF Modified Bitumen Adhesive is a COLD-APPLIED, SBS POLYMER MODIFIED ASPHALT ADHESIVE, that provides great adhesive and elongation prop-erties.

USES:Karnak #66AF Brush-Grade is used to adhere SBS modified bitumen membranes, base and ply sheets. Karnak #66AF Modified Bitumen Adhesive can also be uti-lized to adhere conventional BUR ply sheets or fully granulated cap sheets.

Karnak #66AF Trowel-Grade can be used to make repairs on existing modified applications and flashings on vertical surfaces, i.e. skylights, vents and pipes.


SURFACE PREPARATION:All surfaces should be free from oil, grease, dirt and loose materials. All BUR surfaces should be patched and repaired with Karnak #19AF Flashing Cement and Karnak #31 Glass Membrane. Metal surfaces must have all rust and scales removed.

On vertical surfaces apply #66AF Modified Bitumen Adhesive Trowel Grade at 1/8” thickness (approx. 8 gallons per 100 sq. feet.) The combination of these two protective materials, aluminum and asphalt, by the exclusive Karnak process results in a self-protecting roof coating with longer-lasting moisture and heat-resistant properties. Karnak #169 Non-Fibered Aluminum Roof Coating remains permanently bonded to the base material, thus assuring longer roof life with subsequent savings on roof maintenance.

ADVANTAGES:The asphaltic oils in the base coating are protected from the intense rays of the sun by the reflective properties of the aluminum. SURFACE PREPARATION:Areas to be coated should be free of dust, dirt, loose particles, rust, oil, standing water, or anything that might inhibit adhesion. Repair all cracks, breaks and blisters with cot-ton, glass or polyester membrane and Karnak #920AF Fibered Emulsion Mastic. Allow 24-48 hours to dry.

Badly weathered or alligatored asphalt surfaces should be primed with Karnak 100AF Non-Fibered Emulsion or 220AF Fibered Emulsion prior to coating with 297AF Aqua Lum. Allow emulsion primer to cure a minimum of 3-5 days before application of alu-minum coating.

APPLICATION:Karnak #297AF Aqua-Lum may be applied by soft brush, roller, or spray at 1 to 1.5 gallons per 100 square feet. A one coat application usually gives sufficient protection over most adequately prepared surfaces. For best results when using a brush or roller, keep them immersed in the product or in water to help eliminate the solidification of

PREPARATION AND APPLICATION GUIDELINES

1. The roof should be power washed maintaining a minimum of 2000 PSI of work-ing pressure. This should remove dirt, dust, waste products, i.e. grease, animal fats, solvents, loose roofing products and any air borne pollutants.

2. All fasteners should be re-tightened or replaced as necessary. Stripped fasteners must be replaced with larger fasteners. All fasteners must include a neoprene washer.

3. Rusted through panels or sections must be replaced.

4. Rusted areas must be wired brushed and coated with a rust inhibitive primer.

5. All fasteners must receive a dollop (swirl coat) of Karnak’s AR Elastomeric, brush grade.

6. All horizontal seams must be treated with AR Elastomeric, brush grade and Resat- Mat. If vertical seams are tight, they should receive an application of AR Elasto-meric or a bead of AR Caulk.

7. All protrusions should be flashed with AR Elastomeric and Resat-Mat following good roofing practices and roofing industry standards.

8. Finally, apply a coat of our #298 Alumin-R at a rate of 2 gallons per 100 square feet.

9. Field measurements are essential due to the fact that actual square footage of cor-rugated roofs are more than flat conventional roofs. *There could be as much as a 20% difference in square footage.

5. The entire roof surface must receive a coat of Karnak #505P Primer at the rate of .5 gallon per 100 square feet. Allow Karnak #505P Primer to dry thoroughly (approx. 2 to 4 hours) prior to application of sealant or coatings.

6. All fasteners must receive a dollop (swirl coat) of Karnak #505 Seam Sealer.

7. All horizontal seams must be treated with two coats of Karnak #505 Seam Sealer with #5548 Resat-Mat embedded in between.

If vertical seams are tight, they should receive an application of Karnak #505 Seam Sealer. If seams are open, follow the procedure for treating horizontal seams.

8. All protrusions should be flashed with Karnak #505 Seam Sealer and #5548 Resat-Mat, following good roofing practices and roofing industry standards.

9. Finally, apply Karnak #505 Elasto-Brite M Base Coat at the rate of 1 - 1.5 gal-lons per 100 square feet and Karnak #505 Elasto-Brite M Finish Coat at the rate of 1 - 1.5 gallons per 100 square feet. Allow base coat to dry a minimum of 24 hours before applying the finish coat.

10. Field measurements are essential because actual square footage of corrugated roofs are more than conventional flat roofs. There could be as much as a 20% difference in the total square footage.

NOTE: Do not apply over asphaltic or aluminum coated surfaces.

A. Prime entire roof area with Karnak #505P Rust Inhibitor Primer at .5 gallon per 100 sq. ft. (allow to dry).

B. Application at Seams

Karnak #505 Elasto Brite-M Seam Sealer and Elasto Brite-M Mat are applied in three steps:

1. Apply a base coat of Karnak #505 Seam Sealer. The Seam Sealer is to be applied at 1/16” nominal thickness by 6” width. (Approx. 50 lin. ft. per gallon).

2. With base coat of Karnak #505 Seam Sealer still wet, completely embed 4” Resat-Mat in the Seam Sealer. Resat-Mat must be kept smooth. There can be no wrinkles, fish mouths, or bridging of the mat. If these conditions exist, areas must be cut and reinstalled.

3. Apply a final coat of Karnak #505 Elasto Brite-M Seam Sealer. The final coat of Karnak #505 Elasto Brite-M Seam Sealer is to be applied at 1/16” thickness (approx. 50 linear ft. per gallon) to totally cover the Karnak Resat-Mat. Work should be free of pinholes or loose strands of mat. No mat should be visible. Coverage rate will vary with substrate geography. The application coverage is approximately 25 linear ft. per gallon when applied 6” wide @ 1/8” total thick-ness.

4. All horizontal seams should be treated with Karnak #505 Seam Sealer and Karnak Resat-Mat as described in this section. Vertical seams if tight need only to be treated with #505 Seam Sealer. All fasteners must be treated with Karnak #505 Elasto Brite-M Seam Sealer. Allow to dry a minimum of 48 hours prior to the application of the surface coating.

The Karnak “220AF System” is the economical way of adding extra protection and new life to smooth surface asphalt roofs with surfaces that have deteriorated beyond simple correction. The Karnak “220AF System” when properly applied, provides a protective membrane layer resistant to roof temperature variations.

Easy to handle, #220AF Fibered Emulsion Roof Coating (#220AF) with #3036 Poly-Mat (#3036) weighs only 1/7th as much as cumbersome roofing felts. The “220AF System” is fast, permanent and easy to apply.

The first step consists of applying a coating of #220AF and then while still wet embedding a layer of #3036. The mat is then top coated with another application of #220AF.

An optional but highly desirable feature of this system is the ability to accept an Energy Star® labeled reflective roof coating such as Karnak #501 Elasto-Brite (#501) elastomeric roof coating, Karnak #298 Alumin-R (#298) or Karnak #98AF Fibered Aluminum Roof Coating (#98AF) after only 5 to 10 days drying time. Kar-nak #97AF Fibered Aluminum Roof Coating (#97AF) can also be applied after 5 to 10 days in lieu of an Energy Star® labeled coating. Karnak #501, #298, #98AF and #97AF dry to a brilliant finish that reflect the hot rays of the sun providing U.V. protection and reduced surface temperature by as much as 75°F.

The Karnak “220AF System” will cover most compatible surfaces, which have become cracked, mildly alligatored or have weather-exposure related effects.

METHOD OF APPLICATIONStep 1: All surfaces must first be swept clean to remove all loose dust, dirt, or other foreign matter.

Step 2: Apply first coat of #220AF to the surface at a rate of 2 gallons per 100 sq. ft. and immediately imbed one ply of #3036 into the wet coating. Allow a two-inch overlap where one strip adjoins another and 6 inches on the end laps. The mat should be cut and end-lapped every 5’ – 10’ to eliminate fishmouthing. Gently brush each strip of mat in place so the emulsion seeps through to form a monolithic surface.

Step 3: Apply a second coat of #220AF over the previously embedded mat at the rate of 3 gallons per 100 sq. ft. Smooth coating lightly with a brush and allow 24 hours for proper curing time.

Step 4: After a suitable time, 5 – 10 days minimum or until surface can bear foot traffic, either Karnak #501 (in two coats) at the rate of 1 gallon per 100 sq. ft. per

MATERIALS#220AF Fibered Emulsion Roof Coating: A specially prepared emulsion derived from refined asphalt combined with a unique colloidal mineral resulting in an interlocking mechanical film structure. Karnak #220AF will not support combus-tion in it liquid state. The “220AF System” can be easily applied by brush or spray directly from the container. Once the water has completely evaporated, the #220AF is fully cured and will not alligator or blister and will resist extreme variations in tem-perature. This non-pollutant coating creates no undesirable odors or fumes.

#3036 Poly-Mat: Karnak #3036 spunbound polyester is a reinforcing membrane made of continuos filament polyester fibers that are arranged, highly dispersed, and bonded at the filament junctions. While the chemical and thermal properties of #3036 are essentially those of polyester fiber, the product’s spunbound structure endows it with an extraordinary combination of physical properties. The distinctive characteristics of #3036 include high tensile strength in all directions, combined with good low temperature flexibility, outstanding tear strength and toughness, high bulk and porosity, non-raveling edges and excellent dimensional stability. Karnak #3036 is available in 5-square size rolls. The white color ensures elimination of holiday making it easy to visualize the complete coverage by the roof coating mate-rials.

#501 Elasto-Brite: An acrylic polymer based, elastomeric roof coating formu-lated and field-tested to be mildew resistant and color stable. Karnak #98AF is an excellent and economic way to obtain the features and benefits of an Energy Star® labeled coating.

#97AF(Asbestos-Free) Fibered Aluminum Roof Coating: A reflective coating containing pigment flakes of pure aluminum blended with refined solvents, selected asphalt and reinforcing fibers for heavy duty service. The metallic shield produced from this coating reflects the sun’s rays, preventing the asphaltic oils in the base coating from being “cooked” out, while also reducing roof surface tempera-tures.

LIMITATIONS:DO NOT APPLY WHEN RAIN IS EXPECTED WITHIN 24 HOURS.

#192 One-Kote: is a single-component, cold-applied, coal tar free liquid poly-urethane membrane for waterproofing structural concrete above and below grade. One-Kote cures at ambient temperatures to form a seamless, impermeable, non-deteriorating rubber membrane that allows for expansion and contraction over a wide range of temperatures.

One-Kote is available in two grades: Horizontal and Vertical for use in both above and below grade waterproofing. Karnak One-Kote is compatible with concrete, cinder block, wood and metal surfaces. One-Kote’s advantages are as follows: no mixing on job site, no heating required, fast application, excellent elongation.

#229AR Elastomeric: is a single component, rubber reinforced, asphaltic elas-tomeric waterproof coating which is available in four consistencies: Trowel, Brush, Spray, and Caulk. It is recommended for above and below grade foundations and most areas where extreme movement is anticipated.

The advantages of AR-Elastomeric are as follows: 48 hour curing and excellent water and water vapor resistance. Karnak AR-Elastomeric has 700% elongation and contains ultra-violet inhibitors.

#501Elasto-Brite: A new generation elastomeric coating, developed in the laboratories of Karnak Corporation. It is an acrylic emulsion coating of outstanding appearance and protection, formulated and field treated to be mildew resistant and color stable, ideal for use on above grade sidewalls where a decorative coating is required that is aesthetic to look at. Colors available: Patina Green, Terra Cotta Red, Gray, Tan and Energy Star labeled White.

#920AF Non-Asbestos Fibered Coating—Light Trowel: This non-pollutant product is composed of a non-volatile bituminous binder carefully prepared from selected asphalt crudes and dispensed in water by means of selected mineral col-loids. The asphalt emulsion thus produced is fibered with mineral fibers.

It has excellent adhesion on all types of walls and thoroughly protects the surface by permanently sealing it against the transmission of moisture saturated air or other dis-integrating conditions. Karnak #100, #220 and #920 are also used as adhesives for adhering styrofoam insulation to masonry walls. #86AF (Asbestos Free) Trowel Mastic: is manufactured from a blend of selected asphalts, mineral fillers and suitable solvents. The elastic nature of the dried coating provides excellent performance over wide ranges of temperature and service conditions.

These products are recommended for application as a dampproof coating for the exterior of masonry walls below grade. The inherent strength and adhesion of these products serve to retard the entrance of water and moisture vapors into or through the foundation walls. They are also used for the dampproofing of interior faces of exterior masonry walls above grade and for all backup materials for masonry, such as stone, brick or concrete. #112AF Foundation Coating: A blend of heavy bodied asphalt cutback and high grad solvents. #111AF Quick-Drying Asphalt Primer: A general purpose, Quick-Drying penetrating asphalt primer specially formulated for the preparation of all types of surfaces prior to the application of hot or cold asphalt systems and/or coatings. The open mesh construction of the fabric allows the surface coatings to penetrate through and interlock, thereby providing a firm mechanical bond between coatings, and insuring long life of the application. DESCRIPTION:Karnak #LL10 & LL20 are environmentally friendly colorless silane modified siloxane emulsions manufactured for use as masonry water repellents. They are formulated for deep penetration which enables surfaces to shed water effectively.

The active material penetrates into the substrate and condenses to give hydrophobic characteristics to the substrate. The reaction does not substantially affect the water vapor permeability of the treated surfaces.

USES:Karnak #LL10 & LL20 are water repellents designed specifically for use on fresh con-crete and similar alkaline substrates. Neutral substrates will require longer curing times to develop similar water repellent characteristics.

This material is a multi purpose, cold applied protective dampproofing that dries to a tough, durable and flexible coating that gives excellent performance over a wide range of temperature and conditions. This product exhibits excellent resistance to acids and alkalies in the soils and in the environment.

USES:Karnak #83AF Fibered Dampproofing is designed to dampproof masonry and con-crete exterior surfaces below grade and interior surfaces above grade. Karnak #100AF Non-Fibered Emulsion Dampproofing is a water-based asphalt emulsion that is 100% compatible with polystyrene insulation or protection board. As an adhesive, Karnak #100AF Non-Fibered Emulsion Dampproofing should be applied in 4” diameter dabs directly to the insulation and immediately pressed into place.

Note: When more than two courses are required, wall ties may be necessary. Allow the film to cure for a minimum of 24 to 48 hours prior to backfilling.

USES:It is especially designed for use as a general utility prime coat for concrete, gypsum, masonry, brick and metal surfaces over which waterproofing, dampproofing, roof coatings and other asphaltic products are to be applied. It is specified as a prime coat previous to the application of the membrane system of waterproofing on all concrete structures. It is also very efficiently used as a felt primer on old dried out built-up roofs where penetration is required to revitalize the base surfaces before roof coatings or cold applied systems are applied.

SURFACE PREPARATION:All surfaces to be primed or coated with Karnak #108AF Asphalt Primer must be dry and free from oil, grease and any other foreign matter.

This protective coating forms a smooth, tough, elastic film which gives an excellent performance over a wide range of temperature and service conditions. Karnak #112AF Foundation Coating is used primarily to protect and dampproof masonry walls. The inherent strength and adhesion of this coating serve to help retard the entrance of moisture into or through the foundation wall. If a hydrostatic pressure condition is present against the foundation wall, Karnak #112AF Foundation Coating is not recommended. In such cases, Karnak #86AF Trowel Mastic and Cotton Fabric, or Karnak #192 One-Kote Elastomeric Mem-brane should be used.

USES:Karnak #112AF Foundation Coating can be used to dampproof the interior of above grade block walls and the exterior of below grade masonry walls where no hydrostatic pressure is present.

Karnak #220AF Fibered Emulsion Dampproofing will not burn or support combustion in a liquid state. It has no odor or fumes, and resists the absorption of exterior moisture. D) Polystyrene insulation adhesive:Karnak #220AF Fibered Emulsion Dampproofing is a water-based asphalt emul-sion that is 100% compatible with polystyrene insulation or protection board. As an adhesive, Karnak #220AF Fibered Emulsion Dampproofing should be applied in 4” diameter dabs directly to the insulation and immediately pressed into place.

Note: When more than two courses are required, wall ties may be necessary. Allow the film to cure for a minimum of 24 to 48 hours prior to backfilling.

Care should be taken during backfilling not to puncture or damage the coating. A protection board is highly recommended and backfilling should take place within 7 days.

DESCRIPTION:Karnak #88R Rubberized Waterproofing is a solvent based asphalt compound, spray grade, manufactured with selected asphalts, stabilizers and mineral spirits. Karnak #88R Rubberized Waterproofing is prepared to semi-mastic consistency for easy spray application. Karnak #88R is a multi purpose, cold applied protective waterproofing that dries to a tough, durable and flexible coating that gives excellent performance over a wide range of temperature and weather conditions. Karnak #88R Waterproofing exhibits excellent resistance to acids and alkalis in soil and in the environment.

USES:Karnak #88R Rubberized Waterproofing is designed to waterproof masonry and concrete exterior surfaces below grade and interior surfaces above grade. This product is also suitable as a general protective coating for wood, steel and for all backup materials for masonry such as stone, brick and concrete.

SURFACE PREPARATION:Surfaces must be clean, dry and free from oil, grease, release agents, laitance, dirt, dust and debris. All cracks and imperfections should be repaired and filled with Karnak #86AF Fibered Trowel Mastic prior to coating. If the surface is very porous, it is recommended that Karnak #108AF Asphalt Primer be utilized to provide a firm film base prior to coating with Karnak #88R Rubberized Waterproofing.

SPRAY APPLICATION:A standard heavy-duty airless spray pump with heavy-duty guns and nozzles should be used for spraying. Equipment manufacturers should be consulted for more com-plete information. Spray tip should be 0.035 to 0.041 mm. Apply at the rate of 4 gallons per 100 sq. ft.

NOTE: Allow the film to cure for at least 24 to 48 hours prior to backfilling. Care should be taken during filling not to puncture or damage the coating. A protection board is highly recommended to protect the film prior to backfilling. Contact Karnak Corporation for alternate product suggestions.

ONE-KOTE IS THE ANSWER!A FLUID APPLIED ELASTOMERIC WATERPROOFING SYSTEM.

DESCRIPTION:Karnak’s One-Kote is a single-component, cold-applied, coal tar free liquid polyurethane membrane for waterproofing structural concrete above and below grade. One-Kote cures at ambient temperatures to form a seamless, impermeable, non-deteriorating rubber membrane that allows for expansion and contraction over a wide range of substrates and temperatures. One-Kote bonds tenaciously to the substrate, thus water cannot travel laterally beneath the membrane, even if it should be accidentally punctured. Because it is a single-component system which can be applied in one coat, its cost of application is the lowest of all waterproofing systems. Meets or exceeds the requirements of ASTM C-836. USES:Karnak One-Kote is available in two grades: vertical and horizontal. Our verti-cal grade is non-sag and normally applied to vertical surfaces using a smooth edge trowel. Our horizontal grade is self-leveling and normally applied using a heavy duty 1/4“serrated rubber squeegee.

One-Kote functions seamlessly as a waterproofing layer between the surface course and base structural concrete slab above or below grade, such as: multi-level parking garages, bridge decks, roof decks tunnels patios, waterways and swimming pool aprons.

It is also used as a waterproofing behind interior walls and flooring, as in shower stalls, toilet facilities, cafeterias and kitchen areas.

One-Kote vertical’s primary use is in vertical waterproofing where it affords posi-tive waterproofing to foundation walls. It has excellent adhesion to most vertical surfaces without priming.

One-Kote can be applied in a variety of configurations, from horizontal to vertical. This feature is especially valuable when it is used in flashing applications at joints, and where horizontal surfaces meet vertical. For example, foundation walls, floors, planters, reflecting pools, etc.

INSTALLATION:•Preparatory Work: All surfaces must be smooth, dry, firm and free of voids, projections, loose materials, oil, grease, asphalt, curing compounds and other for-eign matter. Concrete decks should be cured a minimum of 30 days before applying One-Kote. High early strength and insulating concretes do not provide suitable substrates. ACI-301-1104(b) float-finished surfaces should be consid-ered as minimum finish for best results.

One-Kote may develop blisters or bubbles when applied to concrete having a rela-tively rough finish or sand pits. This phenomenon can be minimized by applying a prime coat of Karnak #192 One Kote at the rate of 1 gallon per 100 sq. ft. prior to the final coat.

APPLICATION:Karnak One-Kote Horizontal is ready to apply directly from the container. It should be applied in a uniform film thickness, using a soft bristle brush or 1/4“ serrated squeegee. Conventional airless spray also can be used. It is recommended that One-Kote not be applied unless the temperature is 40°F and rising. It should not be applied during inclement weather conditions. Karnak One-Kote (vertical grade) should be mixed to a uniform consistency prior to application and applied with a smooth edge trowel.

Coverage: Karnak One-Kote should be applied at the rate of 4 gallons per 100 square feet to achieve a wet film thickness of 60 mils. Thicker single coats can be readily achieved, or second coats can be applied when or where desired. After proper curing of initial coat, Karnak One-Kote bonds to itself.

Joints and cracks: All expansion and contraction joints over 1/8“ wide should be filled with a suitable joint sealant to within 1/8“ of the surface. After joint seal-ant is applied, Karnak One-Kote should be applied and imbedded with Karnak Poly-Mat reinforcement. The imbedded Poly-Mat should then be covered by a second application of One-Kote. Hairline cracks should be covered with approxi-mately 120 mils of membrane or above specifications for joints may be followed.

Drains: The base structural slab should be pitched to drains - a minimum of 1/8“ per running foot. Drains should be provided at the level of the base structural slab as well as the wearing course.

Flashings & Joints: Areas where horizontal and vertical surfaces meet should be coated with One-Kote at least 4” above the finished surface. Where a cant strip is specified, it should be placed on top of membrane approximately 40 mils

thick and then covered with approximately 60 mils more of membrane material. Option of Poly-Mat application as used for joint detail may be fol-lowed.

LIMITATIONS:One-Kote is not designed for use as a finished traffic surface or in areas exposed to constant direct sunlight. Certain curing compounds and chemical additives may have an adverse effect on the bond of One-Kote. A field test is recommended under these conditions. Do not apply over any type of lightweight concrete without prior written approval. Steel-pan decks must be vented with 1/4” holes on 4 inch centers. Always use in well-ventilated areas. Do not apply unless ambient temperature is a minimum of 40°F and rising, or on excessively hot decks.

PROTECTION BOARD: To protect One-Kote from damage after application and before the installation of insulation or a wearing course, the membrane should be covered as soon as it has cured with a suitable protection board or lightweight concrete.

CLEANING:Tools and equipment may be cleaned using xylene. These solvents are toxic and flammable; observe manufacturer’s precautions.

STORAGE LIFE:When stored at a temperature not exceeding 80°F (26°C) in sealed containers, One-Kote is stable for a period of six months.

PRECAUTIONS:One-Kote contains diisocyanates; harmful if swallowed. Avoid prolonged breathing of vapors and contact with skin and eyes. Wash hands thoroughly before eating or smoking. Upon accidental contact with eyes, flush thoroughly with water or min-eral oil and seek medical attention immediately. The dried film cures to a tough flexible finish and will resist variations in temperature and weather. Karnak #229AR Elastomeric has excellent resistance to acids, alkalies and salts in the soil and will not deteriorate.

USES:Karnak #229AR Elastomeric is available in brush/spray and trowel grades. Karnak #229AR-Elastomeric is used as a waterproofing coating on primed and unprimed exterior above or below grade surfaces such as masonry, metal, wood, stone, brick and concrete. Karnak #229AR Elastomeric can also be used as a vapor barrier when applied to interior above grade surfaces.

In areas where hydrostatic pressure is known to occur, a 229AR Elastomeric membrane system should be applied to all exterior foundation walls and floor, both below or on grade.

DESCRIPTION:Karnak #79AF Wood Block Mastic is prepared from carefully selected asphalts, sol-vents and mineral fillers. These components are mechanically mixed thoroughly and passed through a high speed homogenizer ensuring a smooth, trowel consistency product free from foreign matter and lumps.

USES:Karnak #79AF Wood Block Mastic is a highly adhesive asphalt cement expressly designed for mastic use in cold application of wood block flooring.

APPLICATION:The temperature of karnak #79AF Wood Block Mastic when applied should be above 70F. If necessary, Karnak #79AF Wood Block Mastic may be warmed by storing containers in a heated room prior to application. Concrete floors must be dry, sound, level, clean and at least 30 days old, with a good wood float finish or equal. Grease, oil stains and dust must be removed, and high spots levelled. Low areas should be filled with concrete patching mix. Let dry thoroughly after cleaning or patching. Dusty or very porous surfaces should be primed with Karnak #108 Asphalt Primer at the rate of 1/2 to 1 gallon per 100 sq. ft. Karnak #108 Asphalt Primer must be fully cured, (dry to the touch), before application of Karnak #79AF Wood Block Mastic.

COVERAGE:Karnak #79AF Wood Block Mastic should be applied directly from the container. Spread at the rate of 1 gallon per 40 to 50 sq. ft. using a 1/16 inch serrated mas-tic trowel with a sawtooth pattern. Apply the Karnak #79AF Wood Block Mastic only at recommended rates of coverage. An inadequate amount will result in poor bonding, while an excessive amount may cause bleeding of the mastic between the blocks.

Karnak #79AF Wood Block Mastic must be allowed to dry a minimum of at least 2 to 3 hours or until the surface is dry to the touch. Installation of the wood blocks to the Karnak #79AF Wood Block Matic may be safely delayed up to 24 hours if desired. Drying is hastened if adequate ventilation is provided. Do not apply blocks to wet or excessive Karnak #79AF Wood Block Mastic .

Application instructions of the wood block manufacturer take precedence and should be followed in close detail to ensure a satisfactory application.

PART 1-GENERAL1.1 ScopeA.) Work included: Provide labor, materials, equipment and supervision necessary to install a waterproofing membrane and joint system below grade and in areas protected from sunlight on horizontal and vertical surfaces, between two courses of concrete slab construction as in pedestrian concourses, parking garages, plaza decks, roof terraces and other areas such as tunnels, foundation walls, interior reflective pools and planters.

1.2 Description of SystemA.) A monolithic, seamless waterproofing membrane resulting from the curing of a cold applied product having elastomeric properties.

1.3 SubmittalsA.) Literature: Submit brochures and descriptive literature indicating the perfor-mance and application procedures.B.) Test Results: Provide test results indicating compliance with specified perfor-mance criteria.

E.) Construction & Expansion Joints: All construction and expansion joints shall be a minimum of 3/4” wide. Insert a polyethylene backer rod to the required depth. The sealant depth shall be at least equal to the width of the joint.

F.) Cracks and non-working joints (over 1/8”): All cracks and non-working joints over 1/8” width shall be filled when using One-Kote vertical grade.

G.) Cant Strips: If Cant Strips are specified at the perimeter cover or other areas where vertical and horizontal surfaces meet, apply One-Kote Horizontal Grade to the slabs and up the vertical surface to within 1/2” of the floor line. Embed the cant trip with a minimum 60 mil thickness of coating.

H.) Priming: One-Kote may require priming. This can be accomplished by apply-ing a prime coat of One-Kote Horizontal Grade at .5 to 1 gallon per 100 sq. ft.

3.2 Membrane ApplicationProperly mixed Karnak products shall be applied by suitable means for the area involved and material chosen, either spray, brush, trowel or gauged squeegee.

A.) Application rates shall be at the rate of 4 gallons per 100 sq. ft. Applications shall be over the entire substrate, including prestripped areas, cants, etc.

3.3 Flood TestFood testing, if specified, should be instituted prior to placement of the protection board. Dam and flood the entire area with a minimum of 1” water for a period of 24 to 48 hours. Inspect underside. If repairs are indicated, drain, dry and re-apply membrane to leakage area.

3.4 Repair ProcedureThe surface must be clean, dry and free from debris.

3.5 Membrane ProtectionThe finished waterproofing membrane shall be protected from subsequent con-crete pours and backfill operations by use of contractor-architect approved protec-tion board of either 1/8” or 1/4” thickness.

Work included: Provide Labor, materials, equipment and supervision necessary to install a waterproofing membrane and joint system below grade and in areas protected form sunlight on horizontal and vertical surfaces between two courses of concrete slab construction as in pedestrian concourses, parking garages, plaza decks, roof terraces and other areas such as tunnels, foundation walls, interior reflective pools and planters.

1.2 Description of SystemA.) A monolithic, seamless waterproofing membrane resulting from the drying of a cold applied product having elastomeric properties.

1.3 SubmittalsA.) Literature: Submit brochures and descriptive literature indicating the perfor-mance and application procedures.

B.) Test results: Provide test results indicating compliance with specified perfor-mance criteria.

1.4 QualificationsA.) Manufacturers: To assure the quality of materials, these specifications are

based upon Karnak brand products as manufactured by Karnak.B.) Applicator: Shall be established contractor who has demonstrated past profi-

PART 2—PRODUCTS2.1 MaterialsA.) Elastomeric waterproofing membrane: Shall be a one component asphalt SBS products marketed under the trade name of Karnak 229AR-Elastomeric, manufac-tured by Karnak Corp., Clark, N.J.

1. 229AR-Elastomeric: A one component asphalt/SBS modified, cold applied elastomeric product. This product produces a smooth, mono-lithic, seamless waterproofing membrane. Easily applied by brush, gauged squeegee or trowel. Material may be sprayed with heavy indus-trial airless mastic spray equipment at a minimum material temperature of 70°F. Suitable for horizontal application in any specified thickness. Vertical applications are limited to 4-6 gallons per 100sq. ft. in a single application (trowel grade only.)

Elastomeric Joint Sealant: Shall be one component, cold applied asphalt SBS product marketed under the trade name of 229C AR-Elastocaulk and manufac-tured by Karnak, Clark, N.J.

1. 229 AR-Elastocaulk: A one component, cold applied elastomeric joint sealant. Application by extrusion from 10 oz. caulk cartridges suitable for horizontal, sloped or vertical joints.

SOLVENT AND EMULSION BASED ASPHALT MATERIALS

NEWLY POURED CONCRETE:All newly poured concrete or C.M.U. mortar joints should be cured a minimum of 30 days prior to applying any solvent based product and a minimum of 7 days before applying emulsion (water based) products. Curing agents containing wax, oil or pigments should not be used. All surfaces should be clean, dry and free from oil, grease, dust, loose paint laitance or other foreign matter.

PRIMING:For surfaces that are very porous and/or dusty, it is recommended that an asphalt primer be utilized to provide a firm film base prior to coating with solvent base asphalt material. The asphalt primer used should be the same type as the coating system ie: solvent based coatings use a solvent based primer.

PROTECTION BOARD:Regardless of the dampproofing/ waterproofing material used, it is:1. Highly recommended that a protection board be utilized to protect the film from

damage prior to and during backfilling operations.2. Allow the film to cure a minimum of 24 to 48 hours prior to backfilling.3. Backfilling operation should take place within 7 days.

COVERAGE:Additional applications of material can be applied to achieve a thicker film thick-ness after proper curing (minimum 24 hrs.) of the initial coat, and then after curing of each consecutive coat.

All products should be applied at the recommended coverage rate as stated in the manufacturers current printed literature.

WEATHER APPLICATION:Materials should not be applied when rain is imminent. (Within 24 hours). Emulsion coatings must be cured fully before any exposure to water.

Emulsion based materials must be protected from freezing. Freezing of emulsion products prior to, or during application may result in product failure.

PRODUCT ALTERING:Coatings should in no way be altered or thinned. Any attempts at thinning these products can alter their designed physical properties, thereby resulting in possible product failure and/or shorten longevity of the cured material. Thinning of solvent

base products is in direct violation of V.O.C. (Volatile Organic Compound) compli-ance laws and/or regulations. Thinning of products will void all warranties.

If taken internally, call a physician immediately. Use solvent base products in a well ventilated area. Always dispose of discarded material in an environmentally safe manner. A. Work Included:The contractor will provide all labor, materials, equipment,required to prepare and complete the installation of Karnak 505 Elasto Brite-M Liquid Membrane Metal Roofing System. All workmanship shall conform to the manufacturer’s mate-rial recommendations and accepted industry standards.

1.1 Guide Section Scope:A.) This section of work is guided by the principals of applicable recommendations of the manufacturer and good industry practices involving workmanship and meth-odology.

1.2 Applicators:A.) Karnak recommends that a Pre-Bid Meeting be held to review the project require-ments for installing Karnak 505 Elasto Brite-M System. A Karnak representative should be part of the project meeting when possible to provide technical input.

PART 2—PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:2.0 Product:Karnak’s UL rated “Class A” 505 Elasto Brite-M System consists of an acrylic copo-lymer formula based on the latest state of the art acrylic technology. The product was developed in Karnak’s laboratories and has undergone extensive field testing and client acceptance both in the American market place as well as overseas. The system remains flexible across a wide range of temperatures. The ease of applica-tion allows the 505 Elasto Brite-M system to be maintained by in-house facilities personnel as required. The end product is a seamless elastomeric protective film that protects the roof for years against leaks and degradation by the elements. A.) Elasto Brite-M System Components:Karnak # 505P Rust Inhibitor Primer:Used to enhance the adhesion of Elasto Brite-M to the substrate.

505 Elasto Brite-M Seam Sealant: A high solids elastomeric, single compo-nent, acrylic copolymer that forms a highly elastomeric seal at joints, flashings and fasteners.

#5548 Resat-Mat: A spun-laced fabric made of 100 % polyester, an industry proven material that conforms to the Batten or Standing Seam metal roof configu-rations found on many metal roofs. #5548 also has the ability to conform to other metal roof configurations as well as transite roofs, Flat Pan, Flat Seam, Crimped Seams, Rolled Seams and roof pan terminations.

505 Elasto Brite-M Base-Coat: A highly elastomeric acrylic emulsion coat-ing specifically designed for application over properly prepared metal roof substrates. Elasto Brite-M exhibits excellent low temperature flexibility, tensile strength and elongation.

B.) Storage and Handling of Products: 1. All components of the 505 Elasto Brite-M System must arrive at the job site in

the original containers, packages, etc., in an unopened condition. All man-ufacturer labels, logos, and other identifying markings should be intact.

2. Store all materials comprising the 505 Elasto Brite-M System in a dry and heated area as provided for in the product literature.

3. No damaged materials are to be installed on this project and are to be removed from site if discovered to be damaged.

PART 4—505 ELASTO BRITE-M USES4.0 Metal Roofing: Old and New ApplicationsA.) 505 Elasto Brite-M may be used on new or weathered metal roofs. The metal deck should be free of rust, scale, dust, oil and grease, prior to the application of Karnak #505P Primer. All rust or scale must be removed. This may be accomplished by wire-brushing, power washing or sand blasting. All removal of rust, scale, and other substances such as grease, oils, dirt, etc. shall be followed by power washing the entire surface. Power-wash shall consist of a minimum of 2,000 psi water pres-sure in order to remove all contaminants from the roof surfaces. The metal roofing should be allowed to dry completely before any primer is applied as required.

PART 5—KARNAK CORPORATION FREE ROOF AUDIT:5.1 - Karnak Pre-Application Roof Audit:A.) The metal deck must be structurally sound before application of the 505 Elasto Brite-M System. Any rotted, cracked, loose, deflecting, sections must be repaired prior to the application of the 505 Elasto Brite-M Metal Roofing System. Do not proceed until all structural defects, if any, are corrected. A Karnak representative can assist in a walk through examination of the roof(s) with a free of charge evalu-ation (two-weeks advance notice required). Karnak Corporation does not practice architecture or engineering and recommends that you consult a registered architect, engineer and/or roofing consultant.

PART 6—ROOF CONDITIONING:6.0 Fasteners:A.) Mechanical Fasteners: All mechanical fasteners should be evaluated for loose-

ness, corrosion, & absence. Karnak recommends that all fasteners be tightened and all defective or missing fasteners be replaced with industry approved fasten-ers and a neoprene washer insert. All fasteners will then receive an application of Elasto Brite-M Seam Sealant in the form of a dab or dollop. All seams of the roofing system, flashings, pitch pockets, and other areas of expected or known movement should also receive an application of 505 Elasto Brite-M Seam Seal-ant.

B.) Loose Metal Roof Panels: Any loose metal panels including edges should be

secured with the appropriate metal fasteners.

C.) Primer: Prior to applying the Karnak #505P Inhibitive Primer, all fungus, grease, oil, rust, and other contaminants should be either mechanically removed by wire-brushing, or removed by means of power-washing. A minimum working pres-sure of 2,000 PSI is required to remove all contaminants from the roof substrate. Allow the roof to dry completely before beginning any primer applications. An alternate method of removing the rust may be sand blasting, although caution must be taken not to puncture or damage the integrity of the panels.

D.) Sealed Joints: Any joints in the metal roof system over 1/8 “ wide should be covered with a coating of 505 Elasto Brite-M Seam Sealant and reinforced with Resat-Mat polyester fabric. A second coat of 505 Elasto Brite-M Seam-Sealant applied immediately over the mat will protect the application and provide a well secured and prepared joint.

E.) Roof Openings, Vents, Heat Stacks, Skylights, Curbs

Flashing Details:All roof penetrations and points of movement must be “framed” with Karnak 505 Elasto Brite-M Seam Sealant, prior to the application of 505 Elasto Brite-M Base and Finish coats. Any penetrations in the metal roof system should be covered with a coating of 505 Elasto Brite-M Seam Sealant and reinforced with 5548 Resat-Mat polyester fabric. A second coating of 505 Elasto Brite-M Seam Sealant over the mat will protect the application and provide a well secured and prepared penetra-tion detail. Note: Any/all seams including ridge caps must be made flush with the roof surface plane using self tapping screws. Use an inert backer rod to pre-fill any void in the metal over 1/2”, prior to applying 505 Elasto Brite-M Seam Sealant. All seams and ridge caps should dry for a period of not less than 24 hours before an application of 505 Elasto Brite-M is made.

Note: Some shrinkage may occur after application. The contractor should inspect for the following:

1. All seams should be properly sealed with no voids. 2. No wrinkles or fish mouths should be present. 3. No Resat-Mat should be exposed.

All irregularities may be repaired by spreading additional 505 Elasto Brite-M Seam Sealer on the areas and smoothing out the fabric where necessary.

PART 7—APPLICATION OF 505 ELASTO BRITE-M ACRYLIC BASE COAT:A.) The 505 Elasto Brite-M Base Coat should be applied to a deck that has been

primed with Karnak #505P Primer and all the joints, fasteners, and penetrations have been flashed with 505 Elasto Brite-M Seam Sealant and Karnak 5548 Resat-Mat.

B.) Dry Surfaces: All surfaces must be dry at the time of application. The ambient temperature at the time of application must be 40°F and rising and must remain above this temperature for a period of 48 hours after the application of the coat-ings.

Note: If spray equipment is used, only trained individuals should operate the spray equipment. Care must be taken to insure that nozzles do not get clogged. Consult with Karnak’s Technical Department and the manufacturer of the spray equipment prior to spraying this system. When using spray equipment, it is advised that care be taken to protect objects and buildings, cars, etc. from spraying damages. The recommended mils for the application should be 20 - 25 wet mils at each coat. It is recommended that a trial pass be made to familiarize the operator with the equip-ment if this is the first attempt at using the equipment.

8.3 Coverage Rates: Coverage rates will vary depending on the porosity of the material being coated and the equipment used to apply it. Large projects are better served by using spray equipment. The size and quality of the work crews will also factor into the application. If spray equipment is used, it is advisable to have an individual hold and guide the hose while the spray person performs his/her spray application. If the applicator is not familiar with the application of the system, it is our recommendation that a 100 square feet area be measured to verify the coverage rate. Note: Since most metal roofs have different surface con-figurations, the profile of the panels must be considered when calcu-

lating the surface area. There could be as much as a 20% difference in square footage as compared to a flat conventional roof.

709 Karna-Klean

DESCRIPTION:Karna-Klean is a biodegradable non-toxic petroleum free cleaner/degreaser with all natural ingredients. The base ingredient in this highly concentrated formulation is a natural solvent obtained from orange peel and pulp, giving Karna-Klean a pleas-ant scent of fresh oranges. Karna-Klean is an extremely versatile cleaner/degreaser capable of removing the toughest grease, tar, lubricants, adhesives and asphalt. Karna-Klean can be safely used to clean aluminum, stainless steel, chrome, concrete and most plastics and painted surfaces. Using Karna-Klean can reduce your costs especially if you are presently using products containing petroleum distillates, alco-hol or other hazardous materials. Karna-Klean affords you the opportunity to utilize one product to clean and degrease your entire facility safely and effectively.

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES:USES: Dissolves and removes asphalt, tar, grease and asphalt emulsions. Cleans asphalt and tar from brick, cements, stucco, concrete and metal sid-ing and all types of roofing equipment and vehicles. Also cleans and removes ink, adhesives, oil and most paints, graphite, dirt and scale.

Note: Karna-Klean is a solvent. As a result, some staining may occur. Test a small area prior to use.

SPECIFICATIONS:85-90% Limonene Solvent.

APPLICATION: Spray onto affected area full strength and allow to penetrate a few minutes. Hose off completely with strong stream of water.
