10 Design ThesesWhen Dieter Rams entered ourlives 16 years ago as a partici-pant in FSB’s Design Workshop,he taught us his 10 designtheses, which are now partand parcel of any good desi-gner’s thinking:
1) Good design needs to beinnovative. It must not reiterateexisting product forms.
2) Good design needs to makea product usable; that’s whatproducts are bought for, afterall, to be used.
3) Good design needs to havean aesthetic dimension, sincethe fascination this engendersis an integral constituent of aproduct’s usability.
4) Good design needs toenhance a product’s ability toexplain itself. It has to renderthe product compellingly elo-quent.
5) Good design is unobtrusive. However, in this, it differs fromdecorative works of art.
6) Good design has got to behonest. It does not attempt tomake the product appear tobe something it is not.
7) Good design needs to beenduring, since fashion isfickle and encourages a throw-away approach.
8) Good design extends toevery last detail. Anything elsewould be disrespectful towardsthe consumer, the productand its function.
9) Good design has to be envi-ronmentally benign and mustnot be a visual pollutant either.
10) The tenth, last and mostcentral tenet of our great men-tor, to conclude, states thatgood design is a minimum ofdesign. Getting back to what ispure and straightforward.
Under the slogan "Multiplicitynot Simplicity”, we are onceagain attempting to meet DieterRams’ exacting demands inthe 02|03 edition of our Manual, issued in the 121st year of ourcompany’s history, and provethat good design does notneed to be boring and mono-tonous. As ever, it will be themarket that determines howcompelling our proof is.

Project fittings
Lever sets on heavily-useddoors are subject to greaterstress than their domesticcounterparts. Designers in thebuilders hardware industry have for this reason long beenworking on how best to con-tain the forces exerted whendoors are opened and closed.FSB opted for a techniquetried and tested in automobileconstruction and mechanicalengineering. Here, stress andthrust are absorbed usingcombinations of rubber andmetal as opposed to all-metalbearings. This proven construction method has enabled FSB tocome up with project fittings,in which a 7 mm self-lubrica-ting bearing is flexibly attachedto a backplate screwed to thedoor. We have been success-fully marketing this system fora decade now.
Fire safety furniture
The specifications for fire, smoke and panic doors are setforth in the following DIN (Ger-man Standards) provisions:
DIN 4 102, Pts 5 + 18DIN 18 082, Pt 1DIN 18 095, Pts 1 + 2DIN 18 273
Standards for fire-safety furni-ture address design-enginee-ring as well as function andstress-rating criteria. FSB sup-plies almost all heavy-duty fur-niture in a fire-safety variant. These fittings are certified andquality-controlled in line withConstruction Rulebook (Baure-gelliste) A (6.17). A generalConstruction Supervision Certi-ficate (P) and Certificate ofConformity (ÜZ) have beenawarded by Dortmund MaterialTesting Laboratory. The safety-engineering contractbears the registration number 12 9902-Do 20.3.
Standard fittings
FSB standard furniture restssnugly in a 7 mm bearing made of black glass-fibre rein-forced plastics containedwithin a rose or backplate. Inaddition to the 7 mm glass-fibre reinforced bearing, FSBroses and back- plates featurelugs that, if pro-perly fitted, ensure all tensile, compres-sive, and torsional forcesarising in normal use are com-prehensively contained andabsorbed. These design fea-tures have been proving theirworth for decades.

Lever handlesSelection guidelines
When selecting and orderingdoor furniture, there are a number of guidelines to fol-low:.
Door thickness
Standard doors almost invari-ably feature standardised doorthicknesses: internal doors38–42 mm, entrance doors66–70 mm. This is the stan-dard FSB spindles are desi-gned to. The thickness of olderdoors should be checked andany discrepancy pointed outwhen ordering.
8 mm 9 mm 10 mm
Lock follower
According to DIN lever hand-les employ different lockingmechanisms depending ontheir application.FSB supplies:
- for internal door locks leverhandles with 8 mm squarespindle
- for entrance door locks leverhandles with 10 mm squarespindle
- for locks in fire safety, smokeand panic doors lever handles with 9 mmspindle
Handing
Doors are either right or lefthand, relative to which way theyopen. When ordering lever fur-niture with dead knob or spindleelement located on the outside, you should specify left or right.Indication with use of diagramnos. 1, 2, 3 or 4 would suffice.Further details p. 508.
FSB Stabil-spindle
All FSB lever handles are to be fitted with the FSB Stabil-spindle. The spindle is solidand meets all the specifi-cation set out in DIN 18 255 if correctly mounted.

During a visit in 1996 to theCharité hospital in East Berlin,FSB staff came across a leverhandle design they had neverseen before - an upright ovalgrip yoked to a cylindricalshank.
Always on the look-out foruncluttered designs, the visi-ting group duly reported backto base on returning to theWeserberg hills. FSB in-housedesigner Hartmut Weise liste-ned attentively and then setabout constructing a modelincorporating what he hadheard.
It pleased us no end, so wethought it might find favourelsewhere too. And so it cameto pass that we marketed ourfelicitous little find from Berlin.

Some lever handle types defyexplanation as to either theirorigins or their market dura-blity. This is especially true ofFSB 1012. It used to be knowncolloquially as a 'Reich-shape'but is now described as an'upright oval'. It is said to havebeen first used in 1926 in IG Farben’s admin block inFrankfurt.
It was inspired by the architectHans Poelzig. The versionshown here was adapted byPeter Assenmacher in 1988.

For some time now a designphilosophy dubbed the 'newrestraint' has been doing therounds. The names most frequently cited in architecturalhardware circles in this connection are Hartmut Weise(FSB 1025) and Jasper Morri-son (FSB 1144).
We would now like to make afurther contribution to the newspirit of restraint with lever handle design FSB 1014 andthe new FSB 1417 narrowbackplate. Handle and plateenter into such a slender un-fussy union that imagining any-thing more restrained wouldbe a bit difficult. Designed byHartmut Weise.

The 'functional style' of the 50sfound its clearest expression in the model FSB 1020. Johannes Potente designedthis model in 1953. His de-sign’s strong points are itsphysical dynamism, its simplehand shape and an assymmetrythat gives the illusion of symmetry.
When Johannes Potente de-signed his 1020 model, it washis intention to provide visualrelief from the strict lines ofthe door, 'inviting' the observerto take hold of the handle.
FSB 1020 is one of four mo-dels designed by Designer Johannes Potente which be-came part of the permanentcollection of the MoMA in New York.

Illustrated on pages 4 and 5 ofa 30s' catalogue by the bronze-ware company S. A. Loevy arehalf a dozen door fittings byRachlis, Grenander, Behrens,Wagenfeld and Paul in which around shank is combined witha flat grip section. In the 90s,the Spanish designer MiguelMilá bent things round a bit toproduce the FSB 1126 model.
This time, though, we are ad-hering more to the original 30s'designs. The third modernistage embraces the spirit of theBauhaus.

When the Ulm Design Collegewas being built in the Fifties, the Swiss architect, sculptorand designer Max Bill withErnst Moeckel designed a leverhandle based on the railwaycarriage handle common inSwitzerland. It entered designhistory as the 'Ulm handle'.
Johannes Potente took this asthe starting point for the 1023model, still a compelling alter-native to anonymous tubulardesigns.

FSB 1025 is the nucleus of the'FSB Light' range of handles.
Its stylistic identity is clearlydiscernible. A straight handlegrip, fashioned in cross sectionlike the outline of a teardrop, slants away from the axis ofthe lever shank to which it isconnected.
FSB 1025 possesses an ele-gant modesty that will pleaseall those keen on no-frills effi-ciency. With the gripping sur-face tilted at 45 degrees, thehand slips on easily; the hand-le’s globular section makes forcomfortable and secure grip-ping, allowing the door to beopened or closed with littleeffort.
A central element in the designof FSB 1025 is its vividly con-densed ridge of luminosity. The effect of slenderness inthis unfussy door handle mo-del is heightened by the waylight and shade are mani-pulated.

Lever handle model FSB 1026adds a rising quarter circle tothe core features of the 'FSBLight' range, thus pointedlymaking its mark. The sectionally globular griparcs up in a quarter circle asthough reaching out to be held. This is a door handle that canbe grasped with equal easeleft- or right-handedly. There’sgood support for elbows andforearms.
The curvature creates the im-pression of increased grippingsubstance, although here, too, material input was kept to aminimum.

FSB 1028 is the most ornateof the handles in the 'FSBLight' range. It’s a bold varia-tion on the FSB 1025 themethat nonetheless retains thevital ergonomic features.
This is a design that catchesthe eye and is just as good tohold. The undular styling ofthe actual handle is both visu-ally striking and a stimulatingexperience for the hand. It’s aselegant a silver embellishmentas you could wish to see onany door, and it also does thejob of opening and closing thedoor pretty well.

FSB 1029 is a special moul-ded-to-the-hand design thataugments the other threehandles in the 'FSB Light' range.
We only use the phrase 'moul-ded-to-the-hand' for modelsthat meet our four Good Gripcriteria to the letter.
Hartmut Weise managed tomodify the teardrop motif insuch a way that the thumband the forefinger have some-where to go and the palm ofthe hand has ample bulk togrip on.
This model incorporates a fewmore grammes of aluminiumthan the other three lighter de-signs in the 'FSB Light' series. But that could not be avoided, given what the model has tooffer. And at the end of the dayaluminium is fully recyclable.

The FSB 1034 lever handlewas Johannes Potente’s firstmajor hit. It dates from 1952.Once the copyright lapsed, itwas imitated by the millionthroughout the world. It evenhad to suffer being remodelledin grey plastic – back in thedays before plastic wenttechnicolor. The Four Rules ofthe Grip viz. thumb guide, forefinger furrow, ball-of-thumbsupport and gripping substanceare ideally catered for.

In the autumn of 1996, theDüsseldorf-based interior de-signer Heike Falkenberg invitedus to recreate a handle designfrom the past as part of a reno-vation project. On the strengthof sketches submitted, the FSBdevelopment department didsome milling work on FSB1076 to arrive at a first appro-ximation. We were so enamou-red of the prototype that wedecided on the spot to presentour hefty new idea to the mar-ket.

The FSB 1051 lever handlehas come to epitomize FSB. Itwas known as the 'Schneider-handle' virtually from its con-ception in the mid Fifties. Wecan only surmise as to whythis model was such a successfor Johannes Potente in theFifties (as it still is). Maybe it’sbecause of the smooth design,
the harmonous interplay be-tween an unerring rectilinearityand the calculated triangulardesign motif towards the neck.

The styling of lever handleFSB 1052 echoes the 'Brakellightweight' with its dynamicsense of motion (the 1107model). Several architects and plannersurged us to harness this handleshape for heavy-duty appli-cations (e.g. in hospitals). Theextended slight curvature to-wards the door is conducive toelbow operation should thisprove necessary. This lever handle set is idealfor heavy-duty and fire-doorapplications. In view of thelarger handle projection, FSBrecommends the use of lockswith a 9 mm follower and acorresponding lever handlespindle.

Nicholas Grimshaw’s doorhandle design is notable for its easy readability. The gripappears to be saying 'to openplease press'. The flattenedbulk is clearly inviting the handto envelop and operate it. Thegrip is as slender from the frontas it is broad across the top.The silver aluminium layer thatseparates the top of the gripfrom the bottom lends the de-sign a sense of great lightness.

What is there left to say aboutthis particular design? Art histo-rians report that it was a black-smith of yore who fashionedthe first tubular handle. In morerecent times - in the 1920s - it was most likely the Wehagcompany that introduced thecircular cross-section to archi-tectural hardware. At aboutthe same time the neighbou-ring Woelm company waslaunching an identical designit dubbed the 'stable doorhandle'.
FSB didn’t leap onto the circu-lar bandwagon until the1970s,when the market was very welldisposed to such moves. Leverhandle model FSB 1070 hasadmittedly since found apowerful rival at home. Weacquired the redesign habitfrom our friend AlessandroMendini. With this approach, FSB 1070has been redefined as the FSB 1146 model.

The 1920s gave us three trulyenduring door handle designs. In Paris, the architect Mallet-Stevens cut a tube in half andmitred it back together again(FSB 1076). The open end wasrounded. In Vienna, mean-while, the philosopher LudwigWittgenstein was busy bendinga brass tube through 90 de-grees (FSB 1147). He, too, rounded off the end. MessrsGropius and Meyer, finally, yoked a square section shankto a circular grip (FSB 1102).
All three designs are still withus today. In fact, two andthree times over as far as FSBis concerned, viz. the FrankfurtModel, Wittgenstein’s handleand the Gropius/Meyer rede-sign by Alessandro Mendini. There’s even a variation on thetheme: Model FSB 1075.Someone had the bright ideaof slicing off the round tip. That was the simple way FSB1075 turned out.

The architect Robert-MalletStevens (1886–1945) designedseveral blocks of flats in theParis of the 1920s. He was probably the first designer to hit upon the idea of taking thetubular handle devised by theViennese philosopher LudwigWittgenstein in the same de-cade, splitting it where it bends, and mitring it back togetheragain at right angles.
They are now known as the'FRANKFURT model', and there’s a simple reason for this. They were rediscovered for thenew Architecture Museumbuilding in Frankfurt and soontook the market by storm.

Much has been written aboutwho invented the tubular de-sign. Most probably it wassome master craftsman wayback when hammering steeltubing into a handle format onthe anvil. The phrase 'horsestable handle' has long beencommon parlance - the endbent towards the door waspresumably designed to pre-vent the bridle from snagging.Having served the animalworld, it experienced a world-wide comeback in manifoldmaterials and countless jazzed-up plastic colours a centurylater. That’s the general back-ground to this classical design.
There’s no doubt who designedFSB 1080, though - none otherthan our during life anonymousdesigner Johannes Potente. His idea was to produce ashorter version suitable for do-mestic use. He was successful.

The notion of combining metaland wood in a lever handle took to the streets, as it were, in the early Eighties. For FSB,Johannes Potente conceived asolid metal shaft with a highlytactile tubular beech grip inlight and dark versions. Thisunorthodox series was a greatFair success and has remaineda consistent seller. The FSBprogramme would be incon-ceivable without it.

So popular has AlessandroMendini’s 're-design' provedthat there have been many re-quests for a stainless steel ver-sion. We’re only too pleased tocomply.

The FSB 1103 lever handle byHans Hollein is shaped to thehand in classical FSB fashion.Hans Hollein incorporated twospecific principles into thismodel: Firstly, he wanted tokeep the user’s hand wellclear of the edge of the door.Hence the stagger betweenthe point of pivot and the grip.Secondly, he wanted to offer achoice of either upward ordownward lever position, thuslending the door a flexibleidentity.

With FSB 1104, Mario Bottasought to highlight the factthat, to open a door, the humanhand requires an implement. The planning of this model wasguided by the realisation thatopening a door brings togetheran organic component, viz. thehuman hand, and a mechani-cal component, viz. the doorfurniture. Mario Botta markedthe heart of his 'Calvinist'offering with a small square. The material used is black-coated steel.

FSB designer Hartmut Weisehas long been wondering wherethe secret of the two populardoor handles 'Wittgenstein’sHandle' and 'Frankfurt Model'can lie. Then one day he hitupon the term 'unpretentiouspresence' to sum up the out-come of his deliberations.
Spurred on by this analysis,Hartmut Weise resolved toplace an even more chaste variant on the decision-makingtable:Round tubing is mitred to anoval grip at right angles. The'Frankfurt heavyweight' is in-stantly transformed into anelegant 'Brakel featherweight'without in any way having sa-crificed the unpretentious pre-sence of the former.

Richard Rogers commissionedhis colleague Laurence Abbottand a team headed by FlorianFischötter to come up with alever handle design with a difference. The brief foresawan elegant stainless steel hard-ware collection whose indivi-dual constituents would be im-mediately discernible to thehuman eye. This far from easytask was achieved with aplombwith door handle model FSB1114.
A stainless steel bar 16 mm indiameter floats airily above apivot to which it is connectedby means of a heavy-dutyshackle. Sporting the looks ofa mechanical lever, this is ano-nonsense tool for openingclosed doors.

When the Spanish designerMiguel Milá suggested that wemake a gently arching leverhandle from a flat steel hoop,we first thought Milá was re-surrecting a form familiar fromthe work of Wilhelm Wagenfeldand his followers.
But we were to discover that, by grace of its organic curvatu-re, Miguel Milá’s steel handleboasted hitherto unknown for-mal properties. His design isan inventive re-interpretationof an old motif, the fusing of around shank and a flat steelband into a single entity.

The shape of door handle mo-del FSB 1127 evokes thewing-beat of a gull. The slendercontours of the folded stain-less steel sheeting give thehand plenty to grip on, andquite as if by chance the thumbalso slips nicely into place. This is an unpretentious de-sign offering its services as ahand tool for the opening andclosing of doors. To the 'large wing-beat' of hisfirst door handle Mr. Magnussenhas added a smaller version,FSB 1128. His wife Jonna, when asked what she thoughtof the original design, arguedthat a more petite model wasalso needed. The grip is shorterand fuller, though the term'grip' scarcely does it justice;this is truly a tactile delight thehand will not want to let go.

Reassured, the handreaches out. The thumb co-mes to rest; the index settlesin its recess; the hand clen-ches to give a firm grip. All thegood-grip criteria identified byOtl Aicher and ourselves havebeen met.

Much has been written aboutwho actually invented the tu-bular design. Most probably itwas some master craftsman inthe mists of time hammeringsteel tubing into a rudimentaryhandle on his anvil. He hadvery likely been commissionedto produce a handle that wouldprevent animals’ harnessessnagging on doors. The dis-paraging phrase 'stable doorhandle' has long been commonparlance. Having served theanimal world well, the handlecame back in an array of ma-terial and colours a century la-ter to adorn doors for humanuse the world over.
That’s the general backgroundto this classic design. But FSBfelt the time had come to taketubular design a stage further. The shank was made to taper, the arching free end given aspherical tip. Only two verysimple features have lent theFSB 1146 model greater indi-viduality with this reworking.Isn’t it strange? FSB 1146 getscopied more and more.

In 1988 we got to know theyoung English designer JasperMorrison, explained the FourRules of the grip to him andinvited him to turn this formulainto a lightweight stainlesssteel handle. He accepted thechallenge and turned up a fewmonths later with the FSB 1166model. We were impressed.
Handles with thin grips hadbeen produced before but hadtended to be geometricallyprosaic.

FSB featured a window handlein its 1986 catalogue that wasnicknamed the 'string model'because its handle consisted of a double length of fine steelwire. Before very long, we were being asked whether wecouldn’t produce a lever han-dle in the same style. We could.

FSB’s lever handle model 1171owes its existence to a 'crazynotion' hatched in FSB’s tool-making shop. It’s a notion witha history. In the inter-war andpost-war periods FSB produ-ced a lever handle that entereddesign history as the nickel hornhandle. It combined a bent sil-verplated shank with a blackplastic grip.
It was in 1992 that FSB’s tool-makers set about recreatingthis design classic in tubularstainless steel using modernexpansion technology. Lawand behold - it worked.

FSB 1173 model sports a trumpet-shaped design verymuch reminiscent of a modelthat emerged in the late Twen-ties in the Frankfurt area andhas also long been part of theFSB repertoire. In earlier cata-logues it was listed as FSB7411. The chaste styling ofthis redesign in aluminium andstainless steel represents acompelling alternative to thefamous door handle modelFSB 1147, based on a designby the philosopher LudwigWittgenstein.

The design of FSB 1176 is like-wise based on an older FSBmodel. The shank and tip ofthe handle were originally madeof rolled steel, this later givingway to cast aluminum, whilstthe grip itself was finished inchunky black plastic.
The tool makers and R & Dpeople at FSB joined forces tofashion this familiar form outof steel tubing, which thensimply had to be rolled to apoint at one end. To producethe moulds for the aluminiumversion was much easier.

Looking at this lever design divorced from its backplate, itmight be suggested thatPhilippe Starck was out to en-dow us with horns. Strangelyenough, though, when thesehorns are fastened to the back-plate they turn into door hand-les as functional as any youcould wish for: The lever can be grasped atvarying heights. Thumb, fore-finger and palm nestle securely. The handle fills the hand whengripped; there is sufficientvolume available.
With this door furniture, FSBoffers an alternative to thesymmetrical design philosophybased on circles, triangles andrectangles. And the set as awhole provides a visual con-trast to the rectangular doorwithout seeking to rise aboveits station. Matt silver backplate, polished lever. Both in high-quality aluminium.

In works design FSB 7010, the'dynamic golden growth spiral'was recreated with a roundcross-section, the lever tape-ring progressively towards thetip. This effect enhances themomentum of the naturalcurvature. With its restrainedlooks and direction-of-motionstyling, FSB 7010 is a joy tohold and use.

In the case of works designFSB 7011, the round cross-section of the FSB 7010 modelmakes way for an ergonomictriangular form. Very strikinghere is the organic ease withwhich the shank of the handleinitiates the 'dynamic goldengrowth spiral' and oversees atapering of the grip's cross-section from 24 mm to 18 mmat the tip. This is an unob-trusive, non-slip design thatreflects the direction of motion.

Works design FSB 7012 yokesthe 'dynamic golden growthspiral' to an elegant squarecross-section. In this series,we quite deliberately adoptedthree classical Euclidean forms- circle, triangle and square. We wanted to demonstrate thatthe 'dynamic golden growthspiral' applies for all forms. Inthis model, too, the grip tapersas the spiral expands. Thistough handle is conducive togripping and features direction-of-motion styling.

This design is the splendid re-sult of a time taking researchand solves virtually every ergo-nomic problem associated withheavily-used doors. Why we’vecalled it the 'Ergo handle' isthus plain to see.
The main benefits of the Ergohandle FSB 7655 are:
-The triangular styling corre-sponds to the direction ofmotion of the user.
-This angular shape absorbsthe effort of operating thedoor.
-The fullness and triangularcross-section of the designcomplement the shape of thehand as it closes to grip.
Where an elbow is applied, theleft-right offers ample sup-port.
The FSB Ergo lever furnitureset 7655 is turnably fixedbackplate and is suitable forfire doors (acc. to German DIN18 273). Because of the widthof FSB 7655 we recommendto use locks with follower 9 mmonly. That’s why the spindle isonly available in 9 mm.
