LaserStar A specially formulated translucent film for the productionof high resolution PCB artworks directly from any Laserprinter. LaserStar has a 75 micron base with a specialcoating for high resolution keying and fixing of tonerenabling crisp dense artworks to be produced. The filmwill also accept copier toner enabling usable artworks tobe produced from pre-printed originals.

JetStar Standard A specially formulated, inkjet film for the production ofartwork photo tools for graphics and PCB production. Thecoating on the film allows dense image to be produced with-out the ink bleeding. The film is designed for use with ink jetprinters using dye-based ink. Negative FilmOrange Dry Peel Negative Film

A UV opaque orange artwork reversal film. After exposurethe film is applied to the adhesive peeling board whichmust be purchased separately. The board has a low tackadhesive on the surface which aids separation during thepeeling process. The top layer of the film which is peeledaway will be an exact reversal of the original artwork. Theorange emulsion is UV opaque.

The FP8000 (8000 dpi) Raster photoplotter is a highlyaccurate machine for creating dense phototools. Themachine draws the image on a piece of light sensitive filmwith a laser. The film is attached to the outer surface of arotating drum and the laser moves step by step along therotating drum. A supplied external universal power unit isused to supply required power (110-240V/ 24V). The photoplotter software allows you to read input filesand to set output resolution and type of image (reverse,mirror, etc.) drawn on the film. When working withGerber files, it is possible to check and modify usedapertures (D-codes) and make simple film panelization forGerber data and corresponding drill data. Viewing ofGerber files and conversion of various types of aperturefiles is possible in freeware program ViewMate (made byPentalogix).

Photoplotter software is supplied on CD or one diskettewith installation program. Requires Pentium computerwith USB port and Windows 95-98 or higher, 100 MB HDspace minimum for software and output files. Thecomputer speed has influence on plotting time. Various types of films may be used for this photoplotter,but all of them must be sensitive to light wave length of670 nm (red light). A suitable film and chemistry isoffered below. Full darkroom conditions are needed toload and process the film. A green safe light fluorescentbulb is available for use in a darkroom in three differentlengths.

Fotoboard Pre-sensitised 'FR4' Copper BoardThe first choice for the production of quality printedcircuit boards.

Fotoboard is a positive working, Photoresist coated, glassfibre printed circuit laminate to BS4584 and MILSPEC MIL-P-13949GE GRN. The resist is applied 5 microns thickusing a specially developed roller coating process whichensures a particularly even layer. The resist is hightemperature cured which, combined with its tough plasticfilm laminate covering, results in a durable board which canbe handled, guillotined and processed with a high degree ofsafety. Inspection at the development stage is simplified byuse of a green dye in the Photoresist. Fotoboard is 1/16"thick, 1 oz copper. It has a minimum shelf life of one yearand is available as both single and double sided. 2 oz andother thickness' are available on request.

FPC 16 Pre-sensitised Economy BoardA fibre glass and paper composite laminate manufacturedto the same high quality standards as Fotoboard butgiving certain price and weight advantages. FPC-16consists of two fibre glass outer layers with a papercomposite in between. The 1 oz copper thickness andhigh quality Photoresist are the same as Fotoboard. Theconstruction of FPC-16 makes it light, easy to cut anddrill. It also costs less to manufacture making it cheaperthan Fotoboard. Various single and double sided optionsare available all supplied as single sheets.

Microtrak Resist Coated LaminatesMicrotrak laminates were previously

supplied by Instagraphic Products Ltd.The FR4 epoxy glass laminate isdip coated with a high resolution

positive working Photoresist. ThePhotoresist contains a dye which gives

a good contrast against the copper,allowing boards to be easily inspectedat the developing stage. Panels areprotected by a specially designed light-

proof blue film which allows panels to beguillotined without the risk of fracturing

PLUVEX 1410

Low Cost UV UnitsThe steel cased LV models are the most cost effective UV unitsoffered. The tubes are in the base which means the artwork hasto be registered on the UV sensitive area and then placed facedown onto the exposure area. Coloured black, each unit has ahinged lid containing a pressure pad which, when the lid is heldclosed by the two retaining clips, acts to force the artwork andsensitive material firmly together on the UV illuminated area. Allcontrols are conveniently front mounted. The LV202-E has a sixminute mechanical timer which also acts as the mains switch.When the control knob is rotated to the required time the poweris turned on and the exposure commences. The timer clicks off assoon as the exposure is completed. The LV204 controls consist ofa 0-500 second digital timer that is set with touch keys. The settime counts down during exposure and then flashes to indicatethe exposure is complete. Both UVs come complete with IECsocket and moulded 13 amp plug.

Pressure Line UV Exposure unit PLUVEX 1410The new Pluvex 1410 UV is a high quality pressure contact UVexposure unit featuring UV tubes in the lid to aid artworkregistration. To perform an exposure, the artwork and UV sensitivematerial being exposed are placed on the precision exposure foampressure pad (fig1). The separate hinged frame containing 4mmglass is then lowered onto this foam pad. It hinges from the rearof the unit and induces a progressive contact line across the faceof the foam pad aiding the expulsion of air between the artworkand UV sensitive material (fig 2). The frame is secured with thetwo front mounting catches to achieve the necessary pressure forthe required artwork contact. When the frame is secured the finalposition and registration of the artwork is checked (fig 3) beforelowering the exposure head and commencing the exposure (fig 4).Exposure is controlled by a 0-500 second digital timer that is setvia touch keys. The set time counts down during exposure andflashes to indicate the exposure is complete. The tubes in theexposure head are screened with a special membrane whichprotects the operative from the potential hazards of live electricalparts. The foam exposure pad sits in a tray and can be easilyremoved for cleaning or quick installation of exposure trays fornon-contact curing. The Pluvex is supplied with an IEC socket andmoulded 13 amp socket.

For the ultimate in reproduction definition, a vacuum unit has to be thechoice. Unlike the pressure pad units the AY series use a vacuum toensure the artwork and material to be exposed are held in perfectcontact. When fine tracks are required on a PCB or detailed definitionon a graphic reproduction, an AY vacuum unit should be chosen. All theAY units now feature the latest rubber blanket and glass vacuum systemfor the ultimate exposure resolution. The time is then set via the touchmembrane control panel and the start button pressed. This activates the

integral vacuum pump which removes the airfrom the chamberensuring perfectcontact betweenartwork and

material to beexposed. Onlywhen a vacuumhas beenachieved will thetubes activateand the exposure

commence. When completed the vacuum pump is turned off and a valve automatically releases the vacuum allowing the lidto be raised. All units come complete with an IEC socket and moulded 13 amp plug.

Mega is the leading manufacturer of small PCBprocessing tanks which are used with great success inboth Industry and Education. The successful provendesign features self contained units each of which arefree standing and will accept boards up to 320 x 260mm(12.6" x 10.23"). Each unit is formed in two parts, thehigh density polypropylene inside tank being injectionmoulded as a single piece. This method of constructionhas proved to be far more efficient than the old methodof welding together several vacuum formed parts whichby design gives inherent danger of leaks from joins. Thisone piece design is an important safety feature whichshould be considered when choosing PCB tanks. Thisinside tank has an integral top surround, which securesover the second of the two parts, a rigid rotationallymoulded polyethylene outer case. A splash proof lid withfull length board holder mesh covers a working area of 5litre capacity. The board holders feature yellow side clipswhich can be secured to close the sides of the meshwhen very small boards are being processed.

For added safety the inside tank is bolted to the outercase at the bottom of the unit. This must be removedbefore access to electrical components. Where applicable,the specially developed 500 watt heater with protectivesilica sheath is externally mounted in the tank, as is thethermostat sensor. The heater is fitted with an internal re-settable safety device to protect the tank if it isinadvertently turned on without any liquid in. All splashproof electrical controls including a variable thermostatsetting are located in a recessed panel on the case front,which prevents liquid getting in contact with the electrics.

For ultimate convenience of use we recommend allour PA processing tanks are used in conjunction withthe Process Tank Workstation Tray featured on page16. We also recommend that all tanks are used witha RCD power break device such as the unit featuredon page 47.

The Jet 34d is a low cost rotary etching machine ideallysuited to the manufacture of prototype and small batchquantities of PCBs. As well as etching the unit can also beused for spray developing and spray resist stripping. Themachine is of a sturdy PVC construction and is mountedon a stand which places the machine at a convenientworking height. Etching solution is contained in a tank atthe base of the machine. It is heated by a powerful quartzheater which assures a short warm up time and constanttemperature which is controlled electronically. Boards upto 300 × 500mm can be etched although several smallerboards can be placed in the special board carrier, thehandle of which protrudes out of the machine eliminatingoperator contact with the etchant.

The machine etches one side at a time and so for doublesided PCBs the board holder is rotated 180º before thesecond etching cycle. In front of the etching chamber is abuilt in overflow wash tank for the rinsing of the etchedboards. The triangular form of the body of the machinemakes it ideal to place in a corner of a room. ROTA-SPRAY The Rota-Spray Processor has many advanced features making an ideal upgrade from a Bubble Etch Tank.

The Rota-Spray etches 1oz (35 µm) PCBs with Ferric Chloride in less than 90 secondswhich is 3-4 times faster than a Bubble Etch Tank. The motor rotates a hollowcolumn up which the etching solution is drawn, before being sprayed out at thepanel via a number of predrilled holes in the column. The unit will spray one side of apanel at a time. The board holder can then be rotated 180º to process the secondside. The Rota-Spray has a 10" × 12" (254 × 305 mm) board capacity and the newboard holder will take a number of multiple small boards, or one large board. Thelow profile design of the board holder means less processing chemical collects on itkeeping processing cleaner. The Rota-Spray features a digital timer which controlsthe processing time. Another benefit is that as the board is not immersed in liquid,there is no over-processing after completion, this makes over-etching very difficult.Another digital control module sets the temperature accurately. The Rota-Spray has atransparent case design which means panels can be examined after processingwithout the operator having to remove them. Next to the etch chamber is an integralspray wash tank, fitted with adjustable spray bars, that washes the entire boardholder to keep the whole etching process clean. As well as an etching unit the Rota-Spray can be used to develop photoresists. The etch chamber has a bottom drainwith secure fastening so no syphoning is necessary when the etching solution needsreplacing. At the top of the unit there is a splash hopper which helps to containchemistry to aid clean processing and a safety cut-out on lid cuts off the motor if lidis raised during etching. An optional Base Unit is available which places the top ofthe processing tank at an efficient working height of 110cm.

SplashA professional PCB double sided spray etching machinewhich can also be used for spray developing. The SplashEtcher will process boards to 210mm × 300mm. As withmost vertical spray processors of this type this machinewill etch 1oz (35 µm) copper boards in approximately 90 seconds.

Mega’s ABC Plating Lines are for the production of highquality Prototype and Production quantities of PlatedThrough Hole boards. IONEXThe name IONEX stands for IONEXchanger, which is the very heart of this modern wastewater treatment system. In total it consists of a two-stage filtration, two ion exchange and one PH-levelling unit.

IONEX is ideally suited for all wastewater-cleaning processes in modern PCB prototype laboratories. Mega 210 Multilayer Press This high performance multilayer press was designed for PCB labs. toenable quick prototyping of multilayer PCBs of up to 6 or 8 layersaccording to industry standards. A compact and floor standing aluminiumrack contains all parts of the unit including pressure supply, press platesand heaters. The large loading door that allows quick and easy access tothe pressure part is of course security switch protected. A compressor,which is integral part of the Mega 210 press is stored in the back of themachine. In the front, you will find additional storage room for tools orboards (lower door). the unit is controlled by two digital and adjustablethermostats, one digital timer as well as a pressure valve with pressuremeter. Fume Extraction

We constantly review our high quality product range toensure that not only does it meet our customers currentneeds and offer excellent value for money but it is also safeto use. Safety could not be more prevalent in the selectionof our PCB chemistry. For some years now we have notsold Sodium Hydroxide for use as a developer, the 4006 &4007 developers do not contain this caustic chemical.

We are also often asked "Is fume extraction required forPCB processing?". Recently the services of an occupational hygienist from Thomson-MTS Limited wereemployed to carry out an analysis of our chemistry whilstit was being used to process PCBs. Mega tankscontaining the following chemistry were used:

Developer - 4006V05 (600-010)Etchant - Mega Ferric ChlorideEtchant - Fine Etch Crystals (600-014)Resist Strip - PC155 (600-019)Tin - PC163/8 Immerse Tin (600-020/1)

The conclusion reached was that providing PCBs are produced in the same method and environment as thetest conditions (i.e., using the above chemistry in MegaPCB tanks in a reasonably sized room) then NO LOCALEXHAUST VENTILATION IS REQUIRED.

For those using other PCB processing chemistry or

techniques who would prefer a dedicated fume extractionsystem a range of canopies, stands, splash backs, fansand ducting are available from Mega. As every building is different it is impossible to specify a system to meet everyindividual's requirement without a site survey. For those who are unable to arrange their own survey and installation we can arrange an initial survey (chargeable) and the fitting of a Mega extraction system which will be tested and theappropriate certification issued (requirement of law).

Canopies6mm PVC canopies specifically designed to meet appropriate air flow requirements for local exhaust ventilation. The low level capture vents ensure approximately 80% of the fumes are removed at source,the remainder being caught by the higher level vent.Canopies are available in various widths up to 96". The36" model being suitable for PB type benchlines and the48" for Labstations and PL series plating lines.

Where wall mounting is difficult and to enable thecanopy to be located right over the PCB processing unit asteel mounting frame is available (not shown). Alsoavailable is an optional 760mm deep splash back whichcan be mounted between the bottom of the canopy andthe top of the processing unit. Please ask for furtherdetails of frames, dampers ducting etc.

Corrosion Resistant CentrifugalExtraction FansA range of fans ideal for use with the above canopies. All are mounted on a rigid bracket and can be fitted inany orientation to alter the angle of discharge. Suitablefor temperatures up to 49°C. They can be externallymounted for which protective weather proof cowls areavailable. Single phase - 240V, 3 phase also available.

PCB Board Dryer

This stainless steel bench top PCB drying machine drieswet circuit boards through a series of squeegee towellingrollers and a heated air knife.

The unit consists of four pairs of squeegee towellingrollers, the first pair rotate in a shallow water tank with awater level detector, this helps to capillary water trappedin the drilled holes. The second and third pairs of rollersremove excess moisture before the circuit board entersthe heat zone where the high output blower air kniferemoves moisture from both surfaces of the board andfrom inside the holes. The board then exits through thelast pair of rollers completely dry.

The electronic control module allows the operator choiceof two heat settings with variable feed rates, thus givingoptimum drying rates. Two powerful, cost effective, shears which have theability to accurately cut PCB laminates, plastics up to2.00mm thick and aluminium up to 1.5mm. An importantfeature of these shears is safety. Free access to thecutting area is prevented by heavy Perspex shieldingextending along both sides of the blade. A safety latch isfitted to the pivot to prevent operation without it firstbeing released. For positional accuracy the cutting bed isfitted with a rule which is recessed to assist in securingthe PCB or sheeting whilst cutting is in progress.

ES420 Corner Rounder

An inexpensive invaluable tool to meet the demand for aquick corner rounding facility for plastic/metal labels andfront panels. The table is effectively split into two halves,each containing 90 degree stops, in the angle of each is ahardened radius of either 6mm or 4mm. The punch hasbeen ground to simultaneously marry both of theserounds when driven down by the cam actioned handle.The material to be rounded is slid from the left or righthand side positively into the stops, to leave an overhangwhich is sheared through by the punch to leave a cleancorner of either 6mm or 4mm radius.

The spindle, which has a fixed speed of 30,000 rpm, islocated below thework table. The CCD2 is the smallest in a range of CNC machines for drilling androuting of PCBs and other materials. All our CNC units can be used for'Isolation Routing' where the unwanted copper to produce a PCB isremoved mechanically rather than chemically etched. The CCD2 is thesmallest and most affordable unit but it still has a processing area of270mm x 320mm. All CNC machines are complete with drill and profilerouting software. For Isolation Routing the IsoCam software is alsoneeded but there is no need to buy the old separate ‘Windows BlackBox’ as this is now supplied integrated in the CCD/2. For a larger working area than the CCD2 the standard CCD isavailable in Manual or Automatic Tool Change versions. The maximumworking area is approximately 324 × 495 mm. These high speed,accurate machines will drill PCBs, manufacture isolation routedprototype boards, and engrave a whole range of substrates includingaluminium. For PCBs the machine will accept the drilling files createdby most CAD software packages and will drill several boards in astack. As with the CCD2 it is also possible to produce prototype PCBswithout the use of etching chemicals, the method of productionknown as isolation routing.

A special piece of software is available, called IsoCam, which uses thedata from the GERBER files to generate the corresponding outlineshape. The whole operation can be performed ‘real time’ in Windows.The high speed and precision of these machines, together with arange of specifically designed sophisticated features (e.g. mechanicaldepth limitation) make this method of production highly accurate andefficient.

The Seno applicators offer a safe, clean and efficient alternative to processing in trays. Each applicator containssafe ready to use PCB chemistry. All work at roomtemperature, the chemistry being completely sealed in acontainer terminated by a sponge with a valvemechanism which dispenses precisely the right amount on each board. When not in use the sponge is protectedby a cap. All applicators are waste free and whenexhausted can be disposed of without the need for anyspecial precautions. Each applicator contains safe to usechemistry and there is no need for special precautionswhen using them. The developers for instance beingtotally free from Sodium Hydroxide. Each applicator has a shelf life of at least two years. With the exception ofetching the complete range of PCB processing sequencecan be carried out with the applicators.

Five Star Photostencil FilmFive Star is an indirect stencil film which combines highresolution with a tough and robust stencil, requiring aminimum of spotting out prior to printing. The film isquick and easy to process. Firstly it is exposed to UV lightin contact with an artwork. It is then developed byimmersion in Photostencil Film Developer, rinsed in warmwater and applied wet to the screen mesh. New syntheticmeshes should be abraded with Seriprep 101. Again allmeshes should be degreased with Universal Mesh Prepprior to application of Five Star.

NEW Bench Top Screen Printing Unit which is ideal forcircuit board and non circuit board applications. Forcircuit boards it can be used to screen print componentidents and solder masks with either conventional silkscreen stencils or photo-imagable inks. Polyscreen InksPolyscreen inks are an ideal medium for printing componentlegend onto printed circuit boards, as well as for printingfront panels, nameplates, schematics etc. The inks combineoutstanding resistance to many chemicals and solvents withexcellent adhesion to difficult surfaces. They also offerexceptional resistance to heat (including soldering).Polyscreen inks are supplied in two parts (base and catalyst),packed separately. Catalyst is added to the base componentin the ratio of 5 parts base to 1 part catalyst. The ink maybe thinned using Polyscreen Thinner & Cleaner (air dryingtime 1-2 hours). Note that full chemical resistance andadhesion will not be achieved until about 4 days afterprinting. The drying time can be reduced to 5-8 minutes ifthe inks are dried using a convection oven operating at150°C. 520 Solder Resist InkA new advanced two-part screen printable solder resistwith outstanding heat, chemical and solvent resistance. Prints will air dry by solvent evaporation overnight or aconvection stoving oven can be used. Infra-redconveyorised dryers may also be used. The inks can bethinned with the OA Thinner.

Photo-imageable Soldermasks /IdentsThese photo-imageable inks are 'blanket' screened ontothe PCB before curing in an oven and then exposing withan art-work to UV and processing in normal dry filmlaminate developer.

5600 - Two Part Solder Mask / Ident InkA two part preparation. Hardener is supplied with thepack and the appropriate amount needs to be mixed withthe ink prior to use. The shelf life of the prepared ink willthen only be 24 hours. Five colours available making itsuitable as an ident ink and soldermask.

GEDAKOP is a simple system for producing yourown single or multi-coloured anodised aluminiumpanels. The dye is added to the anodised layer of the aluminium and the finished panel sealed in hot water. This 'subsurface' imaging produces permanent scratch and solvent resistant aluminiumpanels. The GEDAKOP aluminium is available fromstock in sizes up to 500 x 1000mm and thickness'from 0.2 to 3.00mm. It is ideal for 'one offs' or short production runs. For large quantities thescreen printable GEDALU is available.

Standard GEDAKOP and GEDALU has a matt aluminium finish. 'Polished' finish material availableon a non-stock basis for approximately 20% extra.

Nine simple steps - all that's needed to produce ananodised aluminium panel !

1. Produce an ArtworkDesign the panel using dry transfers or CAD outputting to a pen plotter or laser. Anyopaque image on a transparent or translucentcarrier will suffice. OurLaserStar film on page 6produces superbartworks.

2. Cut materialSelect a piece ofGEDAKOP and cut to size using one of Mega'sshears.

3. Expose to U.V.Place the positive artworkon top of the GEDAKOPpanel and expose in a UVunit. For optimum resultsuse a Mega AY vacuumUV unit.

4. Develop the imageDevelop the exposedimage by placing thepanel under runningwater. Blot the panel with newspaper and drywith a hot air blower orhair dryer.

5. Dye the panelApply the appropriatecolour dye or dyes to thepanel. Remove excess dyeand dry with a hot airblower or hair dryer.

6. Strip the PhotoresistRemove the Photoresistfrom the panel using thestripper.

7. Seal the panelPlace the stripped panelin a Mega Sealing Tankfor 45 minutes minimum.This will offer excellentprotection sealing the dyewithin the anodic layeritself.

8. Punch the panelAdd any required holesusing a press.

9. FinishTrim to final size using a Mega Shear and applyradius corners with aCorner Rounder.

Stainless Steel Sealing TanksA completed Gedakop or Gedalu panel should be immersed in 90°C+ water for at least 45 minutes to seal the dye molecules in the surface of the aluminium, thus protecting the panel from scratching or by chemical attack from solvents etc. To carry out this process a range of sealing tanks are available, each consisting of a thermostatically controlled heated stainless steel inner tank which is thermally lagged and placed in a sturdy wrapper. Each tank is supplied with anumber of baskets which hold several panels duringsealing.

Sealing ConsumablesGedaseal solution needs to be added to the water used inthe sealing tank. It helps seal the panels and preventsexcessive ingress of dye into the sealing water. 'Seno'universal solvent is needed to remove the protective sealand clean the finished sealed panel. The solvent can alsobe used to thin the Gedalu screen printing pastes.

Gedalu - anodised aluminium for screen printingFor larger runs of an identical panel or sign, screen printableGedalu is strongly recommended. The same high qualityaluminium is anodised and chemically protected but noPhotoresist is applied. The image is added to the barealuminium by the screen printing process. The aluminiumhas been anodised to 17 microns minimum to give excellentprinted colour consistency. The sheets are chemically treatedto keep it printable for one year after delivery and also toensure it can be handled without any special precautions.

Like Gedakop - panels are sealed after printing.

Where possible the 1000 × 2000mm sheets are cut to asmaller size (eg 500 × 1000mm) for ease of shipping. Allabove material has a matt finish. 'Polished' finish materialavailable on a non-stock basis for extra cost.

Quikmask Photosensitive Mask Processor For SandblastingThe popular method of producing etched or sandblasted designs onglass is to use a photo-imaged mask. A computer design is transferredto the mask film, which is then applied to the glass before sandblasting.The Quikmask system have been especially designed to produce in-houseultra-violet sensitive film mask simply, quickly and to a consistently highstandard. The mask is then applied to the object to be sandblasted e.g.Glass, Marble etc., using a low tack spray adhesive allowing the originalartwork pattern to be created on the object.

Quikmask StencilKit ProcessingSequence

1. Artwork productionA computer generatedartwork is printed viaan Epson inkjet printeron Jetstar or via a Laserprinter on LaserStar.

2. U.V. ExposureThe artwork and apiece of Quikmask filmis exposed to U.V. lightin the LV202-Eexposure unit

3. DevelopingThe artwork is placedon the special lowvoltage illuminatedlight box. The angledprocessing tray withwater reservoir isplaced on top of thelight box. The exposedQuikmask film is thendeveloped with asponge and water.With the originalartwork under the trayaccurate reproductionis easy.

4. DryingThe quickmask film isthen placed in thedrying cabinet.

5. Spraying withAdhesiveWhen completely drythe film is sprayed withan adhesive for pos-itioning on the glass.

6. Mask positioned on the glassWith the mask inposition on the glass,the top part of thefilm, the clear protectiveoverlay, is removed

7. Masking TapeThe edges of the glassare then protectedfrom inadvertent sand-blasting with maskingtape.

8. SandblastingThe glass is thenblasted with a sand-blaster from Megawhich is soldseperately to the filmprocessing kit.

9. Finished GlassAfter blasting theunwanted Quikmaskfilm is removed withwater and the finishedglass cleaned.
