Nine costal indian states are home toall major and minor ports of India. –Gujrat, Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka,Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Orissaand West Bengal.

Total 13 major sea port – 12government and 1 Corporate

and about 200 non-major ports.

Cargo traffic, which was 911.5 million metric tonnes (MMT) in 2012

which is expected to reach 1,758 MMT by 2017.

India currently ranks 16th among maritime countries, with a coastline of about 7,517 km.

Around 95 per cent of India's trade by volume and 70 per cent by value takes place through maritime transport, according to the Ministry of Shipping.

The Indian government continues to support the ports sector:

Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) of up to 100 per cent under theautomatic route for projects regarding construction and maintenanceof ports and harbours.

10-year tax holiday.

The Indian ports sector received FDI worth US$ 1,635.40 million in theperiod April 2000–May 2014, as per the Department of Industrial Policyand Promotion (DIPP), Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

Kandla Port- Gujarat: Gujarat The Growth Engine ofIndia host of the major seaport of west coast, TheKandla Port is situated on the Gulf of Kutch in Gujarat.

Kandla Port is hub for major imports like petroleum,chemicals and iron also export grains,salt and textiles

Nhava Sheva- Maharashtra: Nhava Sheva now knownas Jawaharlal Nehru Port is the largest container portin India, situated in Navi Mumbai Maharashtra.

The major exports are textiles, carpets, boneless meatand main imports are machinery, vegetable oils andchemicals.

Mumbai Port: The Mumbai Port is located in themainland of west Mumbai on the West coast of India.

Handles bulk cargo traffic with its four jetties forhandling Liquid chemicals, Crude and petroleumproducts.

Marmagao port- Goa: The main port of Goa,Marmagao port is a best natural harbors of Indialocated in South Goa.

Marmagao port is one of the leading iron oresexporter port in India and raw materials too.

Panambur Port- Karnataka: Panambur Port known as theNew Mangalore Port, in Dakshina Kannada district ofKarnataka.Port of Mangalore export major commodities likemanganese, granite stones, coffee and cashew and mainimports includes timber logs, LPG, petroleum products andcargo containers.

Cochin Port- Kerala: The Cochin port is one of thelargest port in India and the major port on the ArabianSea and Indian Ocean sea route.

Kochi Port is equipped with maritime facilities CochinShipyard,Kochi Refineries and Kochi Marina.

Tuticorin Port- Tamil Nadu: Tuticorin Port is an artificial deep-sea harbour.

The artificial port of Tuticorin is a all weather port and who receive a large volume of international traffic.

Chennai Port: Madras Port is the one of the oldest port of India and the second largest port in the country. Chennai Port also the largest port in the Bay of Bengal and a hub port for cars, big containers and cargo traffic in the east coast of India.

Vizag Port- Andhra Pradesh: The port cityVisakhapatnam is located on the southeast coast ofIndia in the state of Andhra Pradesh.

The Visakhapatnam harbors is the only Natural harborsin the bay of Bengal shore.
