    Why India?

y There are several similarities between dairy sectors in India & Kenya as it is a key sector in both countries

dominated by small-holder farmers where milk production is highly unorganized and a supplementary

occupation for producers. The average herd size is about 2-5 cows with low productivity per animal (4-5 lit/

animal for Kenya vs. 3.3 lit/ animal for India).

y Indian dairy sector has seen some major innovations which have led to signicant increase in milk production

from around 20 MT to 130 MT in the last ve decades. Institutional, feed & health, technological, product

diversication and marketing innovations have enabled India to become world’s largest producer of milk

having achieved an annual output of 132 million tonnes of milk (2012-13). The per capita availability of milk

has reached a level of 296.5 grams per day during the year 2012-13, which is more than the world average of

    294 grams per day.

y There are about 170 Producers’ Cooperative Unions, federating into 15 State Cooperative Milk Marketing

Federations in the country have contributed to this grand success of the Indian Dairy sector.

y All these makes India a credible partner in contributing to the progress of dairy sector in Kenya!

    Why Dairy Sector in Kenya?

y Kenya is second largest producer of milk in Africa and

dairy sub-sector plays a prominent role in Kenyan

economy. It contributes respectively 3.5% & 14% to the

national and agricultural GDP of the country. This makes

the dairy industry an important contributor to national

    economy.

y The milk is consumed as liquid milk, fermented milk

products, dried milk products like full & skim milk

powder and other high value products like cheese and

    butter.

y Sector needs support in increasing milk production

and processing levels to bring down the wastage andcontribute to food and nutritional security to people.

    About the Programme

India-Kenya Dairy Innovation Bridge Program (IKDIPB) has series of integrated interventions along the value chain

aimed at improving the competitiveness of the sector and aligning with other programmes being implemented in

Kenya. It is funded jointly by USAID India and IL&FS Clusters. These interventions are expected to increase milk

production, improve dairy management practices and increase processing levels thereby improving the incomes.
