NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata

Party (BJP) will release its

Sankalp Patra (vision docu-

ment/manifesto) on Friday, a

week before the last day of cam-

paigning on February 6. In 2015,

the BJP had released its mani-

festo just two days before the

last day of campaigning.

“Union minister Nitin Gad-

kari will release the BJP’s Sank-

alp Patra for the assembly elec-

tions,” Ashok Goel Devraha,

BJP’s media head for the Delhi

Assembly elections, said.

While the party is targeting

the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on

freebies and is largely keeping

the ongoing protest at Shaheen

Bagh against the controversial

Citizenship (Amendment) Act,

2019, (CAA) at the centre of its

election campaign, the party’s

manifesto is likely to focus on

the subsidy on electricity and

water, apart from other devel-

opment plans, especially infra-

structure.

The BJP has been attacking

the AAP for stalling develop-

ment work in the city.

Senior BJP leaders said the

party, which has been speaking

in different voices on the issue of

subsidy, is likely to present its

plan regarding the two essential

services—water and electricity.

In its 2013 manifesto, the BJP

had promised to cut tariff by

30% if it comes to power.

But in 2015, it promised

reduction in rate of electricity

and rationalisation of water tar-

iff without specifying the per-

centage.

Delhi BJP chief Manoj Tiwari

had previously said the party

will not discontinue the benefits

which people are getting at

present. He, in fact, promised

“five times more benefits”.

A senior BJP leader said that

though freebies are not a good

idea “we can’t withdraw with

people are already getting”. “It

(the subsidies) will continue

when the BJP comes to power in

Delhi. But we will have to

find a way to ensure that the

government doesn’t suffer

loses,” the leader said.

While campaigning in their

areas, a large number of BJP

candidates are talking about the

subsidy given by the AAP gov-

ernment.

“We are telling people that

the subsidy will continue. But

we are also telling them that the

quality of water has gone down

as the samples collected from

Delhi failed the quality test con-

ducted by the Bureau of Indian

Standards,” a candidate said.

Recently, water quality had

become a flashpoint between

the Delhi and the Centre gov-

ernments after the water sam-

ples collected from Delhi failed

the BIS quality test.

Prime Minister Narendra

Modi, while addressing a rally

at the Ramlila Grounds in last

month, had said the “supply of

drinking water” was the biggest

problem in Delhi.

The party’s manifesto com-

mittee, headed by Union health

minister Harsh Vardhan, has

sought suggestions from party

members regarding key issues.

Union minister Prakash

Javadekar, who is in-charge of

the Delhi assembly elections,

held a meeting with the mani-

festo committee members and

senior leaders to discuss the

issues which the party plans to

add to its vision document.

Modi, Yogi to add power to BJP election campaign

Harsh Vardhan said Modi’s first

public meeting would be held at

the CBD Ground in Karkar-

dooma in east Delhi around 2.30

pm on February 3. Modi’s second

public meeting will be held at

Ramleela Ground in Dwarka sec-

tor 14 on February 4.

“Elections campaigns are con-

tinuing in full swing and in the

coming week, two important pub-

lic meetings will be held, where

Prime Minister Narendra Modi

will address the gathering on Feb-

ruary 3 and 4. These rallies will be

held in support of BJP candidates

from 20 assembly segments each

in east and west Delhi,” Harsh

Vardhan said.

Campaigning for the elections

will conclude at 5 pm on February

6 and polling for the 70-member

assembly will take place on Feb-

ruary 8. The results will be

declared on February 11.

A senior BJP functionary said

the dates and places for the rally

were yet to be decided but he said

the UP CM would campaign for

three to four days .“Yogiji is likely

to address public meetings in

Mustafabad and Karawal Nagar

in northeast Delhi after February

1. Other places and dates are still

being decided as the schedule for

his rallies is being prepared,” the

BJP leader said, requesting not to

be named. The development was

also confirmed by another Delhi

BJP functionary.

Union home minister Amit

Shah addressed public meetings

in Chhatarpur, Malviya Nagar

and RK Puram in south Delhi. He

also held a road show in Kasturba

Nagar area of south Delhi.

In his public meetings, Shah

hit out at AAP for allegedly failing

to provide better healthcare and

education facilities and also not

fulfilling its promises.

LAST LEG OF CAMPAIGN Yogi’s meeting at Okhla on Feb 2 is planned just a few kilometres from Shaheen Bagh, where hundreds of people are sitting on a protest for the past 47 days; Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hold two meetings in Delhi on February 3 and 4

NEW DELHI: The Delhi Police and

officials of the state election com-

mission on Thursday conducted

a joint assessment of the situation

in Shaheen Bagh to ensure

smooth elections in the area. Offi-

cers said the assessment, so far,

suggests no “imminent danger”

that could affect or disturb the

polling process on February 8.

A protest against the Citizen-

ship Amendment Act and

National Register for Citizens

since December 15, 2019, at Shah-

een Bagh.

Special commissioner of police

(intelligence), Praveer Ranjan,

said, “A joint assessment of the

situation was carried out by the

district election officer and the

district deputy commissioner of

police. We are making all efforts

to ensure that the election proc-

ess there is not hampered in any

way. We are confident of facilitat-

ing the election process.”

A senior officer in the state

election office said, “A joint

inspection was taken up in the

area to assess the situation in

order to ensure smooth and

peaceful conduct of the election.

No imminent danger has been

reported so far. Also, since a road

has been blocked by the protest-

ers, alternative routes have been

planned to reach polling stations

on that side. However, we will

remain vigilant and ensure poll-

ing is smooth here.”

NEW DELHI : Uttar Pradesh chief

minister Yogi Adityanath will

the February 8 Assembly elec-

tions. Prime Minister Narendra

Modi will hold two meetings in

Delhi on February 3 and 4

In the last leg of campaigning,

Yogi is scheduled to address mul-

tiple public meetings, some of

which will be in Muslim-domi-

nated areas such as Okhla and

Mustafabad.

Yogi’s meeting at Okhla is

planned just a few kilometres

from Shaheen Bagh, where hun-

dreds of people are sitting on pro-

test for the past 47 days.

Confirming Yogi’s schedule,

South Delhi MP Ramesh Bidhuri

said, “He will hold meetings in

Tughlaqabad and Badarpur

assembly segments. In Tughlaqa-

bad, the meeting will be held at

Okhla industrial areas.”

Trinamool Cong offers support to AAP for Feb 8 pollsNEW DELHI: The ruling party in

West Bengal, Trinamool Con-

gress, has offered its support to

Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi

Party (AAP) in the Delhi elec-

tions, scheduled for February 8.

Trinamool Congress’s Rajya

Sabha leader, Derek O’Brien,

posted a video in support of Kejri-

wal and AAP candidate Raghav

Chada, who is contesting from

Rajendra Nagar.

Trinamool Congress, in the

past, had fielded candidates in

Delhi for the Lok Sabha polls but

suffered defeats by huge margins.

Trinamool Congress’s show of

solidarity towards the AAP is

seen as a reflection of the rapport

between Kejriwal and Trinamool

Congress chief, Mamata Baner-

jee. It also underlines the Trina-

mool Congress’s willingness to

stitch a combination of Opposi-

tion forces against the Bharatiya

Janata Party (BJP).

In a video message, O’Brien is

seen praising the work done by

the AAP government in Delhi.

The Trinamool Congress leader

claimed that the Delhi govern-

ment has delivered on “bijli

sadak pani and other issues” of

the local people.

O’Brien also described Raghav

Chada as the “brightest young

mind” he has met in the recent

past. Trinamool Congress lead-

ers, however, maintained that

their top leaders are unlikely to

join rallies or other campaigns of

Delhi’s ruling party. HTC

NEW DELHI: As actor and Congress

spokesperson Nagma, 45,

reached the bylanes of New Seel-

ampur to campaign for its Gan-

dhi Nagar candidate Arvinder

Singh Lovely, she appealed to

voters to support a candidate

who has proved his or her work

and a party that does not dis-

criminate on religious grounds.

As slogans such as ‘jaat pe na

paat pe, mohar lagegi haath pe

(not on caste or religion, vote for

Congress)’ in the background,

Nagma kick-started the Con-

gress’ star campaign on Thurs-

day from New Seelampur’s

H-block.

Supporting the Congress for

the February 8 Delhi assembly

elections, she attacked the Aam

Aadmi Party (AAP) for allegedly

ignoring the Gandhi

Nagar constituency and the BJP

for playing the politics of polari-

sation.

“You (voters) could not have

asked for a better candidate. He

(Lovely) has worked for this con-

stituency for 15 years and has

shown his calibre with his work.

The AAP tried to lure the voters

by giving them freebies, but they

only gave free water that was

dirty and unfit,” Nagma said.

She said, “Their (BJP’s) min-

ister urged that the ‘gaddars’

(traitors) be shot down and today

the lanes of Delhi echoed with

gunshots. Who are these traitors

that they speak of? Today on the

death anniversary of Mahatma

Gandhi, these people have

insulted his legacy.”

Lovely in his speech said that

even when the Congress was not

in power for the last five years,

his doors were open to all the res-

idents of Gandhi Nagar and he

was addressing all issues.

“The AAP leaders for the last

four years kept complaining that

they weren’t being allowed to

work. Then how were they sud-

denly allowed to work in the last

six months? They only had the

elections in mind while we have

worked throughout our 15-year

tenure,” he said.

The AAP and the Congress vie

for the same vote base with the

BJP’s remaining intact in the

past several elections. The Con-

gress is hoping to give a tough

fight to AAP in at least five

seats—Gandhi Nagar, Badli,

Seelampur, Mustafabad and Bal-

limaran.

Another party star cam-

paigner, Punjab chief minister

Captain Amarinder Singh, will

reach Delhi to campaign for Con-

gress candidates between Febru-

ary 3 and February 5.

A party leader confirmed that

he will be holding public meet-

ings in Hari Nagar, Kasturba

Nagar and Jangpura on Febru-

ary 3 and 4. He has also sched-

uled a road show in Kalkaji.
