Malaysia Airlines orders up to 36 ATR 72-600s

ATR and the flag carrier Malaysia Airlines signed a purchase agreement for 20 firm ATR 72-600s, plus options for 16 additional aircraft. The deal is valued at over $840m, including options. The signature of this new contract follows a Memorandum of Un-derstanding announced by the airline in December 2012. With this signature, Malay-sia Airlines brings to 42 the total of firm ATR 72s purchased since the initial purchase agreement in 2007. Malaysia Airlines currently has 22 ATR 72-500s, operated by booming business units Firefly (12) and MASwings (10). The introduction of these aircraft, which are the first ATR -600s to be selected for the growing Malay-sian and regional market, will reinforce Firefly’s and MASwings position on community markets and business routes and con-firms Malaysia Airlines as a major operator of ATRs in Asia. Deliveries will start by mid 2013.

Embraer Executive Jets flies second Legacy 500 prototype

In the wake of November’s highly successful maiden flight of the Legacy 500, the first, full fly-by-wire midsize business aircraft in the corporate aircraft industry, Embraer Execu-tive Jets’ second Legacy 500 made its maiden flight, officially entering the flight test and certification program. The Legacy 500 has flown more than 44 hours in 23 flights since its first flight on November 27th, 2012. Initial envelope clearances, including flying quali-ties, systems evaluation and Engine/APU air starts, have been completed. In late January, the aircraft performed a series of natural stalls with expected results. Reports indicate that systems, performance and flying qualities are excellent. The second Legacy 500 prototype will be dedicated primarily to aircraft systems development and certification. The test pro-gram, as well as numerous other work that continues in tandem with the flight test pro-gram, is designed to ensure the maturity of the Legacy 500, its systems, interior and cus-tomer support before the aircraft enters serv-ice in 2014. The maturity program ensures customers will have the smoothest possible entry into service.

AJW partners with Engineering of Russia to set up consign-ment stock base

A J Walter Aviation and Engineering – The Aviation Maintenance Hold-ing – signed an agreement aimed at enhancing spare parts support and provision in Russia through the establishment of an exclusive consign-ment stock pool of Airbus A320 and Boeing B737 parts. These compo-nents will be housed centrally at Engineering’s facility at Domodedovo Airport, Moscow, allowing for quick and easy distribution across Rus-sia and CIS, as well as the surrounding areas. The consignment stock agreement is considered the first venture of its type in Russia between a leading Western independent parts specialist and an independent Russian MRO provider. The set-up of the pooling facility is the result of a positive and long standing relationship between the two Companies and clearly fills a gap in the market for a fast, reliable and cost effective parts provision service within Russia. Both AJW and Engineering expect to see a high level of demand for the new service from local operators of Airbus A320 Family and Boeing 737 aircraft across Russia and CIS.

Airbus activates A350 XWB lithium ion battery ‘Plan B’

Airbus is confident that the lithium ion (Li-ion) main battery architec-ture it has been developing with Saft and qualifying for the A350 XWB aircraft is robust and safe. The A350 XWB flight test programme will continue as planned with the qualified Li-ion main batteries. However, to date, the root causes of the two recent industry Li-ion main batter-ies incidents remain unexplained. In this context, and with a view to ensuring the highest level of programme certainty, Airbus has decided to activate its “Plan B” and therefore to revert back to the proven and mastered nickel cadmium main batteries for its A350 XWB programme at Entry into Service (EIS). Airbus considers this to be the most appro-priate way forward in the interest of programme execution and A350 XWB reliability. In parallel, Airbus has also launched additional maturity studies on Li-ion main batteries behavior in aerospace operations and will naturally take on board the findings of the ongoing official investi-gation. As a result of making this decision now, Airbus does not expect it to impact the A350 XWB Entry Into Service schedule.
