Heaven and Hell The parable of the wheat and the weeds in today’s Gospel reading raises questions about the final judgements and about heaven and hell. At the final harvest, the weeds are thrown into the fire and the wheat is gathered into the Master’s barn. Is there a hell? The teaching of the Church has always affirmed and defined its existence as separation from God in whom alone we find the life and happiness for which we were created and for which we long. God is Love and only Love. In God there is no hatred, desire for
revenge, or pleasure in seeing us punished. God wants to forgive, heal, restore, show us endless mercy, and see us come home. But just as the father of the prodigal son let his son make his own decision God gives us the freedom to move away from God's love even at the risk of destroying ourselves. Hell is not God's choice. It is ours. The concepts of heaven and hell are as intimately connected as those of good and evil. When we are free to do good, we are also free to do evil; when we can say yes to God's love, the possibility of saying no also exists. Consequently, when there is heaven there also must be hell. These distinctions are made to safeguard the Mystery that God wants to be loved by us in freedom. In this sense, strange as it may sound, the idea of hell is good news. Human beings are not robots or automatons who have no choices and who, whatever they do in life, end up in God's Kingdom. No, God loves us so much that God wants to be loved by us in return. And love cannot be forced; it has to be freely given. Restored to Eternal Life One thing we know for sure about our God: Our God is a God of the living, not of the dead. God is life. God is love. God is beauty. God is goodness. God is truth. God doesn't want us to die. God wants us to live. Our God, who loves us from eternity to eternity, wants to give us life for eternity. When that life was interrupted by our unwillingness to give our full yes to God's love, God sent Jesus to be with us and to say that great YES in our name and thus restore us to eternal life. Pope Emeritus Benedict on the Final Judgement It seems clear today that the fire of the judgment of which the Bible speaks is not a form of punishment beyond the grave but rather the Lord himself, whom we encounter at the moment of judgment … It means that when we come face to face with the Lord in judgment all the ‘straw and hay’ of our life will be consumed and nothing will be left but that which is truly lasting. It means that we are transformed by our encounter with Christ into what we really should and could be. The crucial decision for us is, then, that YES that makes it possible for us to receive God's mercy. - Pope Benedict XVI In Christ’s Love, Deacon Paul

Merciful Jesus, during your life on earth You
showed great concern for the sick and the
infirm.
Have compassion now on all those
who are sick, depressed, and or in pain.
Grant them a healing of mind and body and
restore their strength of spirit.
Comfort them with the knowledge that we are
praying for them, and give them peace with a
sense of Your presence. Amen.
The MMA Leadership Team has spent time planning
for a future of serving St. Mark’s Maturing Adults that
will be influenced by COVID-19. MMA is developing
ways of taking programs and services TO our Maturing
Adults. And to do this successfully, we need MORE
VOLUNTEERS. Here are some areas where we need
some help:
1. Mailing the weekly bulletin to those who do
not have technology.
2. Taking the Eucharist to those who are
isolating and not attending mass.
3. Sending handwritten cards.
4. Providing transportation to appointments or
simply taking someone on a drive for
pleasure.
5. Assisting in assembling, and delivering, the
next “MMA Care Package”.
6. Helping prepare, and delivering, meals to
our Elders who would enjoy a nutritious
meal.
7. Making weekly “check in” calls to St. Mark
Elders.
If you have an interest in getting involved in any of
these MMA efforts, please contact Steve Helmich
at [email protected] or 317.903.9657 (cell
and text).
A BURDEN of these years is to give in to the thought
that personal spiritual growth is no longer an issue for
us and so leave the world a legacy of incompleteness.
A BLESSING of these years is to have the time to
complete in ourselves what has been neglected all
these years, so that the legacy we leave to others is
equal to the full potential within us.

MINISTRY FOR MATURING ADULTS
PARISH LIFE PARISH LIFE Material donations collected in the Narthex for the respective ministries such as St. Vincent DePaul, Birthline, Coin toss, etc. are SUSPENDED at this time given the current COVID-19 conditions and CDC guidelines. This is an effort to reduce contact to surfaces and materials. Additionally, all paper pamphlets, books, etc. have also been removed from the message stations until further notice. Please check with the parish office before leaving any material in the Narthex. This is an ever changing situation and will be updated accordingly as new guidance is given. Thank you for your adherence, patience and understanding! Church Cleaning: As we continue to adhere to the CDC guidelines of cleaning between Masses, we are in need of additional individuals to assist with the cleaning committee. Please contact Angi Swiezy at [email protected] or Carol Cassetty at [email protected] if you are interested in helping.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL The St. Mark group of St. VdP volunteers are amazing! Our
volunteers support the larger St.VdP food pantry each week,
have done so throughout this pandemic! More hands are
always needed!!
St. Vincent de Paul has been serving an ever-increasing
number of people at our Food Pantry and we are about to
lose the assistance of the National Guard. We are in need of
volunteers more than ever to help packing food and produce
boxes and putting these boxes in the cars of those we
serve. We are in a similar situation at the Distribution Center
processing donations … sorting, tagging and hanging
clothing; sorting household items and linens; assisting at the
dock receiving donations … the list is endless. Our Mission
27 Resale store on Shelby Street could also use your help
assisting customers, stocking shelves, etc.
We are observing COVID-19 guidelines at all locations …
masks are mandatory; we have hand sanitizing stations and
exercise social distancing wherever possible. Please join us
… students, families, co-workers, everyone … during these
times when our neighbors need us the most by signing up to
volunteer at SVdP. Go to www.svdpindy.org. Click on “I
Want To Help.” Click on “Donate Time.” Scroll down to the
facility at which you would like to volunteer and select the
date/time that best fits your schedule. Questions? Darlene
Sweeney [email protected].
Handmade, cloth masks are available in the Narthex
for a $5 donation to our St. Mark St. Vincent de Paul
