Indian Currency Note Denomination Detection
Methodology for the Blind
Introduction• Kapil Kumar, a visually impaired PhD scholar, says, "I have to take help from friends and
relatives to know the value. I keep Rs 10 notes in my trouser pockets and the higher value notes like Rs 100 or Rs 500 in my shirt's upper pocket to distinguish between them."
• The country's visually challenged, in addition to several other challenges, face difficulties in distinguishing currency notes. This is because they have to depend on sighted strangers they come across for assistance. They often get cheated by shopkeepers in everyday transactions even before they know it.
• In contrast to the West, which is characterized by technological advancement and a greater degree of awareness, our nation hasn't leveraged the resources at its disposal to come up with an effective, cheap and user-friendly solution for the problem.
• The visually challenged have, for long, relied on naive and crude methods to differentiate currency denominations. For the most part, this comes only with experience, and so may not always be reliable.
