readers might have even seen a documentary about it on the television, extolling its fantastic infrastructure
and superb planning. It ticks all the right boxes too - “great vision”, “sustainable”, “well-planned”, “smart
city”, “impressive use of technology” and more.
One might start thinking about Prime Minister Modi’s “Smart City Mission” in India, possibly giving you
people an “out” from the city they currently live in ...

Smart city progress stumbles over bumps of solid waste all over state
BHUBANESWAR: ODISHA is in the midst of transforming Smart City
from a concept into a reality but has ignored a pivotal component, solid
waste management (SWM). The scenario of solid waste disposal in most
of the cities speaks volumes about the manner in which the Housing and
Urban Development Department (HUDD) has shied away from SWM.
Unscientific disposal of garbage closer to habitation has led to public
unrest on several occasions across the State. Read More ...
IISc turns into a mini-lab for ‘smart city’ concept
400-acre campus and a population of 10,000 make the institute ideal for the project. While the country has
set an ambitious goal of developing smart cities, the 440 acre mini-township inside the Indian Institute of
Science (IISc) campus is being turned into a "living laboratory" to implement the smart city concept. The
first part of the project, which will cost Rs 93 lakh, is being jointly funded by the Department of Electron-
ics and Information Technology (DeitY), Government of India, and the Robert Bosch Centre for Cyber
Physical Systems (RBCCPS) at IISc. "Since India is giving a big push for developing 100 smart cities, we
decided to focus on this aspect. IISc has a 400-plus acre campus, a floating population of over 10,000 stu-

Seven pillars of building safer smart cities
A smart city is about how you apply advanced technology to achieve your own objectives and configure
technology to support what you want to do. Therefore technology is not the end game; rather it's what we
achieve with it that is critical.
This was according to Walter Lee, head of innovation, Global Safety Division at NEC, speaking at the
XON and NEC annual smart cities summit in Limpopo yesterday. Lee discussed the three major trends of
technological evolution within smart cities across the globe today. ...

Connected bus stops to smat bicycles: the smart city start-ups you need to know
Smart cities are on their way – and this time they're for real. Disparate as-
pects of cities are beginning to connect with internet of things (IoT) devic-
es.
"Projects look at a single system – like transport – but don't link it with say,
health," says Steve Turner, head of the Future City programme at Man-

Four ways technology will change how we commute in the future
Columbus, Ohio, is a mid-size city known primarily as the home of Ohio
State University, not as a hub of cutting edge technology for public transpor-
tation. But that is exactly what this city of 790,000 people plans to be.
By 2019, residents of Columbus could see autonomous shuttles cruising the
Easton commercial district, motion-sensitive LED streetlights that also pro-
vide free Wi-Fi internet to the residential neighbourhood of Linden, and 175
smart traffic signals that aim to ease traffic jams and speed first-responders’
paths through the city.

New Audi cars can tell you when traffic lights will turn green
Starting this autumn, when you're stopped at some traffic lights, new Audi Q7 and A4 cars will show a real
-time time-to-green-light countdown on the driver's information cluster. Now you'll know exactly when to
start revving like a hooligan.
The tech, which Audi has imaginatively dubbed the Traffic Light Information System, receives traffic light
timing data via the car's cellular modem. In this case, rather than getting the data directly from nearby traf-
fic lights, the data is being broadcast by some kind of city-wide traffic management system. ...

Building a Better Traffic Signal
The promise of “smart city” solutions is so trendy and so all-encompassing —
with cities pursuing tech-enabled optimization on such a wide range of issues —
it can be easy to forget that it all started with the lowly traffic signal. Los Ange-
les installed the first adaptive signal timing system back in 1984, with the goal
of managing traffic flow during that year’s Olympics. Today’s systems are more
sophisticated, and a whole slate of new technologies exists to adjust traffic
lights based not just on vehicle flow, but also on smartphone data ... Read More ...
