The Hoosiers opened the head coach Terry Hoeppner Era with a 20-13 victory at Central Michigan on Sept. 2. While the Hoosiers are obviously pleased with the vic- tory, the season opener also gave them sev- eral points to address on both sides of the football. “We still have a lot of work to do. We’ll learn so much from this. Everything was new to us,” Hoeppner said. “I learned that we have a lot to work on. I was a little surprised that we didn’t run the ball as well in the first half. But I learned our team is tough, they respond well and are a team that can be coached.” PANNOZZO HONORED Indiana senior middle linebacker John Pannozzo was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week for the period ending Sept. 4. Pannozzo was the Hoosiers’ starting full- back each of his first three seasons, but IU coach Terry Hoeppner and his staff moved the 5-11, 235-pound captain to middle line- backer in the spring. This allowed 2004 all- league pick Kyle Killion to move to his more natural outside linebacker slot. Just as Killion is more comfortable at out- side linebacker, Pannozzo made himself at home in the middle. Pannozzo made his defensive debut with six tackles (team-high three for loss) with one forced fumble and one sack against Central Michigan. Pannozzo led an aggressive Hoosier defense that helped Indiana post a 21:40-8:20 advan- tage in time of possession en route to a sea- son-opening victory. This marks the first time that a Hoosier has received the league’s top weekly defensive honor since Herana-Daze Jones (Sept. 13, 2004). THE NICHOLLS STATESERIES

This marks the first-ever football meetingbetween Nicholls State and Indiana. In addition, the Hoosiers have never faced a program fromthe Division I-AA Southland Conference.

NEW TRADITIONSIndiana University football fans who are

motorcycle enthusiasts had the opportunity to`Ride to the Rock' prior to Saturday’s game.Several motorcycle enthusiasts will help toescort the IU Football team from their pregamehotel to Memorial Stadium.

Saturday’s game also marks the debut of“The Walk.” Two hours prior to each homegame, the Hoosier coaches and players willdepart the team busses, walk across 17th Streetand through the tailgating section en route toMemorial Stadium.

"This is our symbolic march into the stadi-um," head coach Terry Hoeppner said. "It's atremendous opportunity for the fans, as well asthe coaches' and players' families, to see theplayers and coaches before the game. Theplayers love it; it's very motivating for them. We're going to have Memorial Stadium rockingthis fall, and we need everyone to be there."

SCOUTING NICHOLLS STATEDue to the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina,

Nicholls State postponed its Sept. 3 seasonopener at Utah State. Thus, the Indiana gamemarks the Colonels’ 2005 season opener.

Head coach Jay Thomas re t u rns 45 letter-winners and 16 starters from last season’s 5-5club. Senior quarterback Yale Vannoy threw for700 yards and five touchdowns a year ago, whiles o p h o m o re fullback Broderick Cole (512 yard s ,four touchdowns) is the top re t u rning ru s h e r.

D e f e n s i v e l y, junior linebacker Cory Vavala isthe Colonels’ top re t u rning tackler (69), whilesenior defensive back Joe Ogletree (48 tackles)anchors the secondary.

THE START CHARTQ u a rterback Blake Powers, wide re c e i v e r

M a rcus Thigpen, defensive tackle Greg Bro w n ,safety Troy Grosfield and kicker Joe Kleinsmithmade their first career starts last week atCentral Michigan.

Defensive end Victor Adeyanju (34), left

g u a rd Adam Hines (34) and cornerback BusterLarkins (12) each extended their consecutives t a rt stre a k .

TWICE AS NICEShould Indiana defeat Nicholls State, it

would mark the first time since 1993-94 that theHoosiers have opened consecutive seasonswith 2-0 start s .

POWERING THE OFFENSEIn his first career start, sophomore quart e r-

back Blake Powers completed 17 of 35 passesfor 276 yards and three touchdowns in a 20-13v i c t o ry over Central Michigan. He distributed amajority of his work (13 completions and 265y a rds) to a quartet of wide receivers - JamesH a rdy (5 for 107 and one touchdown), Marc u sThigpen (2 for 92 and one touchdown), JahkeenG i l m o re (4 for 48) and James Bailey (2 for 18).

Powers' 276 yards and three touchdownspassing was the best by a Hoosier quart e r b a c kin his first career start since Antwaan Randle Elt h rew for 385 yards and three scores againstWe s t e rn Michigan in 1998. What makes Powers’p e rf o rmance all the more impressive is that aftercompleting just four of his first 11 passes for 19y a rds, the 6-4, 235-pounder closed the half byhitting 7-of-8 for 118 yards and two touchdowns.

ROAD WARRIORSTe rry Hoeppner-coached teams have

enjoyed considerable success in road games,posting a 27-17 ledger as the visiting team,including a 17-7 mark since 2002. Furt h e rm o re ,H o e p p n e r-led squads led the nation in 2003 ro a dvictories (eight) and have not had a losing ro a dre c o rd since 2001.

BY THE NUMBERSNot only does Te rry Hoeppner rank among

the top-10 active coaches in the nation for win-ning percentage, but his teams:

• have never been shut out• are 36-8 when they score first• are 28-7 when they lead at the end of the

first quarter • are 44-3 when they lead at the start of the

f o u rth quart e r• are 18-1 since 2003 when they score first

AN EFFICIENT OFFENSECoach Te rry Hoeppner's spread off e n s e

p roved to be a quick-striking attack. TheHoosiers' three scoring drives averaged 4 plays,59 yards and 1:51.

MAXIMIZING TIMEThe time of possession proved decisive, as

Central Michigan had a 17:16-12:44 advantage inthe first half, but Indiana responded with a 21:40-8:20 advantage in the second half. The Hoosiersa re third in the league in time of possession at3 4 : 2 4 .

BIG PLAY DAYBlake Powers’ 74-yard touchdown pass to

M a rcus Thigpen was the longest Hoosier touch-down pass since Matt LoVecchio and JahkeenG i l m o re hooked up for an 80-yard score atIllinois on Nov. 6, 2004.

In addition, James Hard y ’s spectacular, one-handed, 54-yard reception set up the Hoosiers’second touchdown of the game.

A HARDY EFFORTJames Hardy caught five passes for 107

y a rds, marking the first time since Oct. 9, 2004( C o u rtney Roby at Nort h w e s t e rn) that an Indianaplayer had 100-plus receiving yards. Hardy is thefirst freshman in school history to re c o rd 100-plus yards receiving in his debut game. The lastf reshman to re c o rd 100-plus yards re c e i v i n gwas Levron Williams (105) vs. then-No. 1 OhioState on Oct. 31, 1998.

The Southeastern Conference recently compiled a list of the nation's top-20 winningest active coach-es in terms of career winning percentage (minimum five years as a Division I head coach - thru 9/4).

INDIANA FOOTBALL The Nicholls State Game - Sept. 10, 2005 - 5

Indiana head football coach Terry Hoeppneris in his first year at the helm of the Hoosiers. TheWoodburn, Ind., native, who led Miami (Ohio)University to a pair of consecutive Mid-AmericanConference East Division titles and bowl gameappearances for the first time in 30 years, wasnamed Indiana University’s 26th football coach onDec. 17, 2004.

In less than nine months, Hoeppner hasalready made his mark on the Hoosier program. Not only did IU enjoy a productive spring on thepractice field, but season ticket sales are up 25percent as Hoeppner and his coaching staff andplayers have made numerous appearancesacross campus, the Bloomington community andthroughout the state.

Indeed, there is a buzz about Indiana football. In his first season, Hoeppner has established

two new traditions for the program. Two hoursprior to every home game, the coaching staff andplayers will depart the team buses and walkthrough the tailgating crowd to MemorialStadium. In addition, after each IU victory, thecoaching staff and players will sing the schoolfight song to the student section.

During his Miami career, Hoeppner men-tored nine eventual NFL draft picks, including2004 NFL Rookie of the Year quarterback BenRoethlisberger of the Pittsburgh Steelers.Roethlisberger says that the IU program is in ter-rific hands.

“I can’t say enough about Coach Hoeppner. He is an inspiration, a second father to me. I lovehim to death,” he said. “I told him that I willalways support him, because he has always sup-ported me. He’s a wise man who made a wisedecision. Going home (to Indiana) has got to be agood feeling.”

“Indiana players are getting a great coachand a great mentor,” Roethlisberger continued.“ H e ’s touched so many lives in so many ways.H e ’s going to do great things at IU. The playersare going to love him. He’s a players’ coach.”

Hoeppner arrived in Bloomington afterspending 19 seasons at Miami, including the pastsix as head coach. During his head coachingtenure, Hoeppner helped restore the nationalspotlight to the tradition-rich RedHawk footballprogram. In addition to compiling a 48-25 overallrecord, Miami finished among the top three in theMAC East each of the last six years.

The Southeastern Conference recentlycompiled a list of the nation's top-20 winningestactive coaches in terms of career victories aswell as career winning percentage. Indianacoach Terry Hoeppner is tied with Texas A&M'sDennis Franchione for eighth in the nation amongactive coaches' winning percentage (.657).

The RedHawks closed the 2003 season bywinning the MAC and GMAC BowlChampionships and were ranked 10th in the finalAssociated Press poll and 12th in the ESPN/USA

To d a y Coaches poll. In addition, Miami was ratedas high as 11th in the Bowl Championship Series.

Hoeppner is the third former MU coach toeventually stroll the Hoosier sidelines. John Pontwas a three-time first team All-MAC halfback atMiami from 1947-50 before moving onto an illus-trious 28-year head coaching career that includ-ed stops at his alma mater (1956-62) and Indiana(1965-72). He directed Miami to three league titlesand the 1962 Tangerine Bowl before earning 1967National Coach of the Year honors for leading theHoosiers to the Big Ten title and Rose Bowl.

Bill Mallory was a two-time all-league endat Miami in 1955-56 before embarking on a 27-year coaching career that included stops atMiami (1969-73) and Indiana (1984-96). He ledMiami to the 1973 MAC and Tangerine Bowl titles, and he is the winningest coach in Indiana history. He directed the Hoosiers to six bowl games ineight seasons.

Just as Hoeppner followed Pont andM a l l o r y ’s footsteps in Oxford, the 1969 Franklin(Ind.) College graduate is poised to do the same inBloomington. Hoeppner is second on Miami’s all-time wins list (48), and those victories include tri-umphs at Northwestern (1999, 2003), at NorthCarolina (2002), at Colorado State (2003) andagainst Louisville in the 2003 GMAC Bowl. A 2003finalist for the Paul “Bear” Bryant National Coachof the Ye a r, Hoeppner won the 2003 Schutt SportsCoach of the Ye a r, the Columbus Dispatch O h i oCollege Coach of the Year and the MAC Coach ofthe Ye a r.

Prior to taking over the MU program fromcurrent Northwestern coach Randy Walker inJan. 1999, Hoeppner spent 13 seasons as anassistant coach, including Assistant HeadCoach/Defensive Backs from 1993-95 andAssistant Head Coach/Defensive Coordinatorfrom 1995-98.

During the 1998 campaign, Hoeppner’sdefense ranked fourth in the nation in scoringdefense, fifth in pass efficiency defense and 16thin total defense. Miami’s record with Hoeppner asAssistant Head Coach was 42-22-2 (.652)

During his 19-year Miami career, Hoeppner

enjoyed considerable team and individual suc-cess. Miami gives special recognition to majorvictories - triumphs over programs from BCS con-ferences, and Hoeppner played a role in 12 suchcontests and six as head coach. Included in thesedecisions are wins at then-No. 8 LSU in 1986, atthen-No. 25 Northwestern in 1995, at then-No. 12Virginia Tech in 1997 and at then-No. 12 NorthCarolina in 1998.

H o e p p n e r ’s impact at Miami was felt on andoff the football field. The RedHawks enjoyed atleast five national television appearances each ofthe last two seasons, and Miami’s bid to the 2004Independence Bowl secured the highest bowlpayout in MAC history. Hoeppner has spearhead-ed efforts to renovate Yager Stadium and thedevelopment of the $5 million Walter L. GrossFamily Student-Athlete Development Center.

A 1969 graduate of Franklin College with ab a c h e l o r ’s degree in physical education andminor in biology, Hoeppner earned his master’sdegree in education from Butler in 1983.

Hoeppner was invited to the St. LouisCardinals’ and Green Bay Packers’ trainingcamps, and he played one season each with theDetroit Wheels and the Charlotte Hornets of theWorld Football League.

Hoeppner and his wife, Jane, have threechildren - Amy, Allison and Drew - and fourg r a n d c h i l d r e n .

“ I can’t say enough about Coach Hoeppner. Heis an inspiration, a second father to me. I lovehim to death. I told him that I will always supporthim, because he has always supported me. He’sa wise man who made a wise decision. Goinghome (to Indiana) has got to be a good feeling.Indiana players are getting a great coach and agreat mentor. He’s touched so many lives in somany ways. He’s going to do great things at IU.The players are going to love him. He’s a play-ers’ coach.”
