Coach Wimmer’s Comments “Are You Normal?” Winning is not easy. As a matter of fact, you could even say it is not normal. There are 7 football teams in the

Hoosier Crossroads Conference – only one will be the champion. There are 4 teams in our sectional, but only one is the winner.

There are 32 football teams in 6A, but only one wins the ultimate victory to become the Indiana 6A State Champion.

Winning is not normal. If you want to win, you cannot be one of the crowd. The crowd does not win. You have to be

willing to act differently, do things differently from the others…from the losers. You cannot train like everyone else. You

cannot practice like everyone else. You have to set yourself apart to be a winner. You cannot worry about being cool.

You cannot worry about being in. You cannot worry about being one of the crowd. You have to set yourself apart. Winning is

not normal.

You have to make a decision to want to win. That desire to win is not inherent. You are not born with it. You decide

you want it and you make it a priority. You make it a priority to get to scheduled workouts. You make the way you prepare and

train important. It is not a hard decision to make. Everyone wants to win. However, not everyone is willing to prepare

themselves to win. Don’t leave it to chance. Be intentional. Train with a purpose. Practice with a purpose. Doing so will help

you set yourself apart from the others who are afraid to challenge themselves – the normal people.

This does not only apply to football. Apply it to any goal you set – academic, career, athletic. In whatever you choose

to do, being successful – winning – is not the norm. What can you do to set yourself apart from the others who also think they

want to win? You will find that what you may view as a sacrifice of your time or fun, is really no sacrifice at all. The rewards of

reaching goals and achieving dreams – of winning – are worth the effort. Understanding that you cannot be like everyone else

is the first step toward winning. Set yourself apart from the crowd. Don’t settle for being normal.

APC Course Sign Ups Any athlete who wishes to take the Advanced Physical

Conditioning (APC) class next year must enroll in the

course when guidance counselors begin signing students

up for next year’s courses. Guidance counselors will begin

this process shortly after we return from Christmas Break.

Only students who participate in an IHSAA-sanctioned FHS

sport are permitted to enroll in APC because of weight-

room space and class size. This course is designed for

those student-athletes who are serious about improving

their overall strength, speed, explosive power, and agility.

Students perform resistance training in the weight room

four days each week and work on explosive power, foot

quickness, agility, and speed development once each

week. Many students who have taken this course have

made excellent physical improvement in these areas. It is

especially important for multiple sport student-athletes

who have little off-season time to get in the weight room

after school to develop strength. It is extremely important

to the development of athletes involved in football,

wrestling, basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball, soccer,

and track (particularly sprinters and field event athletes),

because explosive power, speed, agility, and strength are

important ingredients for success in these sports. Every

school that has a successful athletic program, particularly a

successful football program, has a very high percentage of

their athletes enrolled in APC or a similar class that

emphasizes strength training and speed development.

Make it a priority to take APC as one of your electives next

year. You must first complete the two required P.E. course

credits in order to enroll in APC.

Individual Player Meetings Being ConductedAll returning players (current freshmen,

sophomores, and juniors) should sign up for an

appointment for a 20 minute meeting with Coach

Wimmer. Appointment schedules are posted outside the

APC locker room door where Coach Wimmer’s office is

located. Players can sign up for an interview time for

either before school or after school, whatever is more

convenient for you. Coach Wimmer does not expect any

in-season athlete to miss or be late to a practice because

of this meeting. Find an available time that does not

interfere with a practice or a game. Sign up for a meeting

as soon as possible, but meetings are expected to continue

until about Spring Break. If you have not yet signed up for

your interview, please do so immediately. Coach Wimmer

will talk with you regarding your skills and areas for

improvement as well as physical goals, individual football

goals, team goals, and academic goals. About 60 players

will have completed their interviews with Coach Wimmer

by Christmas Break. Sign up for your Individual Meeting on

the sign-up sheets outside the APC locker room if you have

not already done so.

Please complete the spreadsheet that was

emailed to you and send it back to Coach Wimmer as an

excel document before the meeting. If you did not receive

one or need another, please e-mail Coach Wimmer

immediately and one will be sent to you.

Gridiron Club Officers Approved Our coaching staff, players, and parents would like to thank outgoing Gridiron Club officers for their time and efforts during the past few years that each of them has served our program. We especially want to thank outgoing Gridiron Club co President Sean Duddy for his years of service to the club. Officers for the Gridiron Club for the 2016 season have been selected and approved by the membership. The 2016 Gridiron Club officers are as follows: Co-Presidents – Bob Kantner Gionnine Cohoon Co-Vice Presidents – Kathy Syrus Aaron Uribe Secretary – Tina Siefert Treasurer – Stephanie Hochstedler Fundraising Coordinator – Kim Broughton The tentative date for the annual Tiger Night Lights sponsored by the Gridiron Club will be Friday, March 11 from 6 – 10 pm. This is for boys in grades 1-4. Coach Wimmer, staff, and players will conduct games, a youth football clinic, an NFL style combine and obstacle course, provide pizza to end the night. It is a great way for youngsters to meet and get to know many of the Fishers HS football players, learn a little football, and have lots of fun. It is also an opportunity for parents to have a great night out! Cost will be minimal and details will be released in our next newsletter. The Gridiron Club will begin its 2014 meetings in February. We will release the meeting dates for the upcoming months in our January Eye of the Tiger Newsletter. Don’t forget to also check out the Gridiron Club website at www.fishersgridironclub.org or you can access the website from our FHS football website www.fisherstigersathletics.com/football and click on Gridiron Club.

Workouts for 2016 Underway

The off-season workout program for the 2015 football season will resume on Wednesday, January 6 for all football players. All out-of-season football players not in APC class are expected to attend our off-season strength and speed program beginning Wednesday, January 7. Workouts for football players, along with athletes in track and baseball, will be held each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 3:15 – 4:30. To be a successful HS athlete, especially football, you must be involved on a consistent basis in our after-school strength program. Do not be left behind. Make a commitment to your physical development.

Players who are in the APC class are expected to be at after-school workouts on Monday and Wednesday after school (3:15 – 4:30). This is an opportunity to add needed volume to your strength program by adding Chain Squats, Band Squats, Chain Bench, Close-grip Bench, Compound Lifts (Clean + Front Squat + Jerk, Snatch + Overhead Squat, etc), as well as other supplemental lifts for our advanced lifters. Those who took part in November and December saw excellent gains when they tested last week. Don’t be left behind! Add more volume! Gain more strength and explosiveness. For those in APC, after-school workouts on Friday will be optional.

We also expect all off-season players to attend the Morning of Champions Speed and Sky School on Friday mornings from 6:30-7:15. The MOC is a speed and agility program designed to improve your athleticism, speed, agility, explosiveness, and foot quickness. This is an important part of our training process that cannot be overlooked.

The entire strength and conditioning program is under the direction of FHS strength coach Randy Wheeler. We will also have members of our coaching staff available in the weight room on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday to assist Coach Wheeler with the strength program and to conduct position-specific drills for those players enrolled in APC class.

Future Tigers Football Club Connects w/ Varsity Program The Future Tiger Football Club continues to be a popular way for young people in our community to connect with our

football program and players. had over 30 members in its first year. For the $35 membership fee, members received a Tiger

Ready t-shirt, a Fishers Football Senior Poster, a Fishers Football Value Card ($20 value filled 25 discounts from local business

that can be used everyday), special access to the sideline during pre-game warm-ups for home games, all 7 issues of the coming

year’s Eye of the Tiger Fishers Football newsletter, and discounts to any of our Fishers Development Football Camps held during

the summer as well as a $5 discount to our Tiger Night Light (Grades 1-4) held in March. One of the highlights of being in the

Future Tiger Football Club is the Big Brother Program in which a FTFC member is matched with a varsity player. A letter of

encouragement is sent from the Big Brother to the FTFC member and the Big Brother tries to visit his little brother at his youth

or junior high football game. Many of the club members also choose to purchase a season football ticket as part of the

package for an additional $15. Listed below are the current members of the Future Tiger Football Club.

Bishop-Dullaghan Camp Info As has become an important part of the process of becoming a champion here at Fishers HS, we are making preparations to attend the Bishop-Dullaghan football camps this summer. Varsity and Junior Varsity teams - made up of incoming sophomores, juniors, and seniors – will prepare to attend the B-D Team Camp where our players will not only focus on fundamental development, but our own coaches will install our base offense and defense and have the opportunity to work against other similar teams who will be at the camp. Last year we were able to work against Ben Davis, Columbus East, Crown Point, Whiteland, and Westfield and those teams are expected to return again this year.

We will send our Freshmen skill players (QBs, WRs, TEs, RBs, DBs, LBs) to a B-D Skills Camp where they will focus on the development of fundamentals. Our incoming freshmen linemen will attend the B-D “Down and Dirty” Linemen Camp which will also focus on the fundamentals of being an offensive and defensive lineman. Those camps are both held at Depauw University during the same week so all our freshmen players and coaches who are able to go will be able to attend together.

As we have done in the past, we will have scholarship money available from last year’s fundraising efforts for those who would like to take advantage of that. The amount of that scholarship will be set in January. Attendance at these camps is not mandatory, but we do believe they are highly beneficial to each individual player’s skill development and our team’s progress. Below are the camp dates we will be attending.

FHS Team Camp Dates Set The 2016 Fishers HS Football Team Camp (Grades 9-12) will take place Monday, July 18 – Thursday, July 21. This camp is for all players in our HS program grades 9-12. There is no cost for this camp except for $20 required for the Fishers FB Practice Shorts and Fishers FB Practice Jersey which are mandatory for the camp. These items obviously cost more than the required $20, but we plan to make up the difference with the sale of our Tiger Value Card fundraiser. This camp will run from 4:30 – 7:30 pm daily (7:00 pm for incoming freshmen). This is a very important instructional opportunity for our players to attend. We expect all players to make every effort to attend our team camp during July 18-21.

NCAA Scholarship Requirements and Clearinghouse

The NCAA requires student-athletes to reach minimum GPA and SAT / ACT test score standards in order to receive an athletic scholarship. These standards are on a sliding scale for Division I scholarship eligibility. The NCAA currently requires a high school student-athlete to have attained at least at 2.3 GPA in 16 core courses. Not all courses count as part of your core course curriculum. Core courses include college prep courses in language, math, science, and social studies. Your guidance counselor or coach can help you determine your core course GPA. Minimum test score requirements are on a sliding scale based on the core course GPA. For example, with a core course GPA of 2.3, an SAT score of 900 (Reading & Math only) or an ACT score of 75 is required. With a core course GPA of 3.00, only 620 is required on the SAT or a score of 52 on the ACT. Some colleges have GPA and/or test score minimum standards which are higher than those required by the NCAA. The NCAA does not use the writing portion of the SAT to determine your score. Only the reading and math scores are used for NCAA eligibility.

Course grades cannot be upgraded by retaking a course during your senior year. There are also restrictions regarding what online courses will be accepted by the NCAA. Most will not count toward NCAA eligibility. Check with your guidance counselor.

We strongly recommend that all players considering going to college take the SAT and/or the ACT no later than the

fall of your junior year. You must meet SAT or ACT test minimums before you can take an official visit as a student-athlete recruit. You may take these tests as many times as you wish with the best scores counting. It would be a good idea for sophomores to take the PSAT test in the fall to help prepare for the SAT.

See your guidance counselor to register for these tests. You may also register for the ACT at www.act.org or for the SAT at www.collegboard.com. Late registration (with additional fees) are also available if you miss the registration deadline. Check with your guidance counselor.

Any student-athlete who hopes to earn an athletic scholarship at any NCAA Division I or Division II institution must apply to the NCAA Clearinghouse. These forms should be completed at the beginning of your senior year. See your guidance counselor to receive and complete these forms or you can do it online at www.ncaaclearinghouse.net .

2016 Fishers Alumni Football Club “Tiger Challenge” Golf Outing Set The date for the 2016 Fishers Alumni Football Club “Tiger Challenge” Golf Outing will be Thursday, June 23, when we will return to River Glen Golf Club for this annual event. Other details will be forthcoming. Last year our 3rd Annual “Tiger Challenge” was a great success as we attracted about 75 golfers, provided a $1,000 renewable scholarship in memory of Trent Van Hoosen for a graduating senior and 2 former players, and raised an additional $5,000 to assist the athletic department in providing funds to purchase weight room equipment for the new 6,000 square foot weight room we will soon be completed next fall. Last year’s scholarship winner was Luka Skudrzik who is attending Purdue University. This year’s Trent Van Hoosen Memorial Scholarship winner is Colton Thomas who has been a leader in the classroom and on the field, learning to deal with the unexpected death of his father Darren last year to become a valuable member of our program and earning the Most Valuable Special Teams Player Award this past season. Our #1 goal will be to provide $4,000 worth of renewable scholarships for Colton and the other 3 former scholarship winners to continue their education. After that goal is met, we hope to continue to build funds to support the football program and Fishers HS. This is the 10 year anniversary of our first FHS football team from 2006. At this year’s outing we hope to bring many of those players back, recognizing and honoring them at our post-outing dinner. If you know players or parents who were part of our first team in 2006, please pass along our intentions and have them send contact information to Coach Wimmer at [email protected]. We expect to have a way for former players to link to Facebook to receive information after the New Year. We will also have a new website for the golf outing up and running in January where you may register and receive information regarding sponsorships. Below are listed the recipients of the Trent Van Hoosen Memorial Scholarship. Each of these former players will

receive a $1,000 scholarship at this year’s post-outing dinner.

Polar Plunge Coming Soon

Above are pictures of FHS Football players, coaches, and other students who took part in the 2015 Polar Plunge. Get signed up

as described above to take part in this year’s “Freezin’ for a Reason” Polar Plunge for Special Olympics.

Special Olympics Indiana is holding its annual Polar Plunge to raise money for the programs in Indiana that serve children and adults

with intellectual disabilities. This is a wonderful opportunity for the Tiger football family to serve the community in a worthy cause. It is our

goal that every player will either collect donations or actually take the plunge with members of the coaching staff. The partnership between

the IHSAA and Indiana Special Olympics includes a competition among many central Indiana high schools. Returning and graduating players

are all welcome and encouraged to participate.

The Plunge takes place at Eagle Creek Reservoir on Saturday, March 7 at 10 AM. Over the past 7 years that our football program has

participated in the Polar Plunge, our players and coaches have helped raise over $50,000 for Special Olympics of Indiana. Our hope is that

every player and coach will participate in this worthwhile cause in one of the two ways described below. Parents are welcome to plunge as

well as some have done in the past. Fishers HS has traditionally been one of the largest groups to participate in The Plunge.

Former FHS Assistant FB Coach Pat Schooley has organized this event for our program for several years. He will still be the main

contact person if you have questions ([email protected]) or you may also contact Coach Wimmer

To Take the Plunge:

* Go to www.firstgiving.com/soindiana to register and join the team Freezin’ Fishers Tigers. * When you register, you will also be setting up your fundraising page with FirstGiving and you can design that page as you see fit. * Again, make sure you join the team Freezin’ Fishers Tigers. * Your individual totals will be added to our team totals. Students only need to raise $50 to take the plunge ($75 if you want a

t-shirt); adults need to raise $75. * Let’s continue the tradition of Fishers High School being the model for high school involvement in the Polar Plunge.

To Just Donate: * Go to www.firstgiving.com/soindiana/

* Click on the teams tab then scroll down the list of teams then click on team Freezin’ Fishers Tigers to donate to a specific player. You can also give a check to a football player or coach, payable to Special Olympics Indiana. Polar Plunge information is available at www.soindiana.org Contact Coach Schooley ([email protected]) with any questions. Further details will be forthcoming when the date draws near. Thanks in advance for your help with this very important cause. Let’s make this a monster community service project in which we can all take pride.

Special Olympics motto: “Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt. “

FB Program Assists with FHS Celebration of Giving Several players assisted our PTO in helping a family in need with their Christmas this year in the annual Celebration of

Giving project. Matt Broughton, Luke Martin, Titus Martin, and Jacob Steiner formed one team while Preston Putzback, Jon

Vore, Garrett Fox, and Alex Morse formed another team. Each team shopped for one of two boys from a family who needed

some assistance this year. $160 from the football program was given to each group along with a wish list of possible clothing

gifts and sizes as well as a few toy ideas for each of the boys. Both groups of players did a great job of getting good buys and

coming up with great gifts for these boys. Thanks also to the moms who helped organize and assisted with some of the

shopping as well. Thanks to these players for their help in making Christmas a little brighter for another family.

Former FHS Tigers Playing in College in 2015 8 former Tigers were on college football rosters this past fall with several of them making significant contributions to their college teams. Not only are we proud of our former players’ accomplishments and contributions to their college programs, but we are proud of all of our players who decide to continue their participation in football as they continue their education. For some, their time has not yet come, but we encourage all of them to stay in school, have a great experience with the game, and continue to use the game to build relationships and experiences that can help them in years to come.
