Visitors to the Museum can see artifacts from his days in Hollywood as they examine original movie posters, costumes, scripts, photos and more. Jimmy personally selected some items for display in the Museum including, a Winchester commemorative rifle and propeller blade autographed by the cast and crew of “Flight of the Phoenix”.
James Maitland Stewart was born in his parents’ home on Philadelphia Street in Indiana in 1908. When Jimmy was five, his parents built a house atop “Vinegar Hill”. While Jimmy Stewart’s boyhood home is no longer owned by the Stewart family, visitors can drive by the residence, located at 104 North 7th Street in Indiana, to sneak a peek at this piece of history.

Make a reservation to tour NAESKAHONI TOWN, a French and Indian War era living village situated on Chestnut Ridge near Black Lick. Experience life from this era as you participate in the daily chores of the Eastern Woodland people. There are 10 structures within the village, each of which provides opportunities for hands-on-activities. These structures include: a hunting/fishing lean-to, a warrior’s longhouse, a trader’s lean-to, a border people’s house, a bow maker’s longhouse, a tanner’s wigwam, a toolmaker’s thatched wigwam, an herb lady’s wigwam, a cook house/pottery longhouse, and a gardener/jeweler’s wigwam.
Experience displays of history and heritage of the county at one of our many historical societies.
Stop by the HISTORICAL AND GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY OF
INDIANA COUNTY and visit the INDIANA COUNTY HISTORICAL MUSEUM. The museum is home to both permanent displays and a variety of changing exhibits. See the permanent exhibitions including farm and home, Native Americans, coal mining, and a 19th century doctor’s office, including a display of medical instruments. Temporary displays include art shows, seasonal decorations and cooperative exhibits with other community groups.
Visit the STRONGSTOWN MUSEUM operated by the STRONGSTOWN HISTORICAL SOCIETY inside a restored one-room schoolhouse or while in Cherry Tree stop by the TONKIN MUSEUM housed in the former home of life-long resident, Robert Tonkin. Tonkin bequeathed his home to the borough as a request for the development of the museum.
Today, visitors can see artifacts and read information about the cultural heritage of Cherry Tree. THE HOMER CENTER HISTORICAL SOCIETY displays heritage artifacts of the Homer City area in a refurbished caboose. Museum hours are seasonal.
Learn about the link between the Underground Railroad and Indiana County when you visit THE BLAIRSVILLE AREA UNDERGROUND RAILROAD MUSEUM. The museum is devoted to the memory of the area men and women who joined in the Underground Railroad Movement of pre-Civil War America. The museum documents and preserves area history through presentations, historic narratives and re-enactments.
