2019 State Finals

This year's state finals enjoyed great attendance.

Combined with the 4A Friday night crowd of 2,782,

Saturday drew 6,664. Thus, totaling 9,446 for the

weekend.

In 1A, University returned to Victory Field and were led by a state-record performance by senior pitcher Reese Sharp. The Trailblazers came away with a 4-1 victory over Washington Twp. Sharp pitched the complete game, allowing just four hits and striking out a state-record 17 batters. The title for coach Chris Estep’s squad is the first in school history, while Washington Township was playing in its first-ever state championship game in any sport. Coach Randy Roberts’s Senators finish the season at 23-7. Nate Shatkowski of University High School was announced the winner of this year’s L.V. Phillips Mental Attitude Award in Class A Baseball.

In 2A, Alexandria Monroe scored 2 in the bottom of the 7th to come away with a miraculous, 4-3 victory over Southridge in the Class 2A championship game. Southridge made a return appearance after falling in the 2A title game in 2018. The victory gives coach Jeff Closser’s Tigers (29-6) their first state title since winning the first 2A championship in 1998. Southridge (22-9) took a 1-0 lead in the opening inning and two more in the fourth. The Tigers broke through in the sixth inning with 2 one-out singles to pull the Tigers within 3-2. Joe La-Grange of Southridge High School was the winner of this year’s L.V. Phillips Mental Attitude Award in Class 2A Baseball.

In 3A, Andrean junior Mason Sannito singled in pinch runner Robbie Ballentine in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the 59ers a 2-1 victory over Edgewood in the Class 3A championship game. The 59ers won their seventh state title, second straight 3A championship, and four in the last six years. The victory gave long-time coach Dave Pish-kur his seventh state title tying him with the late Ken Schreiber of LaPorte and Lafayette Central Catho-lic’s Tim Bordenet for the most in IHSAA history. Earlier this season, Pishkur passed Schreiber as the all-time winningest coach in state history (1,014 wins). Andrean finishes the season at 36-1, winning its final 35 games. The dramatic ending to the only finals matchup of the No. 1- and No. 2-ranked teams came after a classic pitcher’s duel featuring Edge-wood’s Luke Hayden and Andrean’s Michael Doolin. Edgewood coach Bob Jones was leading the Mus-tangs into the state final for the first time in his 34-year tenure. Michael Doolin of Andrean High School was the winner of this year’s L.V. Phillips Mental Attitude Award in Class 3A Baseball.

In 4A, Hamilton Southeastern came away with a 3-2 victory over Columbus East. The Royals scored an unearned run in the bottom of the 7th to come away victorious. The Royals of coach Jeremy Sassanella captured the state title in their first appearance and finished the season on an 11-game winning streak. Hamilton Southeastern (23-8) took a 1-0 lead in the opening inning. The Olympians tied it in the third. The Royals came back in the bottom of the third with another RBI single. Columbus East re-tied the game in the fifth. Coach Jon Gratz’s Olympians saw a 12-game winning streak snapped and fin-ished 25-5. Julian Greenwell of Columbus East was named the L.V. Phillips Mental Attitude Award in Class 4A Baseball.

helped make the 45th annual

North/South All-Star event special.

Over fifty of the top seniors from

the State of Indiana reported to

Madison High School for the 45th

annual All-Star Series.

In the opener, the South took con-

trol with an 7-1 lead through the 5th

inning. They held on for the win 7-3

with both teams collecting 7 hits.

The North got revenge in a big way

collecting 12 hits on their way to

winning Game #2 by score of 16-3.

Sunday (wood bat game) was a close

game 5-4 through 5 innings. The

North added to their lead with 2

runs in the 7th and 1 in the 8th.

Thus, the North won 8-4 and taking

the series 2-1.

The Don Jennings MVP Award was

presented to Kyle Schmack from

South Central (UM) High School.

Who went 8-10 with a homerun, 2

doubles, and 8 RBI’s. Jostens will

FUTURES GAMES UPDATE

Thank you to Phil McIntyre and the

IHSBCA Executive Council who ran

this event with great efficiency.

The format allowed a lot of time

for the 70+ juniors/sophomores on

hand to demonstrate their abili-

ties for the 17 college coaches

from across the Midwest and 1

scout who were in attendance. The

showcase was held at Madison HS

prior to the North/South Series.

Thank you to the Madison HS staff

for their work in getting the fa-

cility ready for this annual

event. We adjusted the past for-

mat (pro-style workout) and added

2 games by splitting the players

into 4 teams. This was well re-

ceived by the college coaches in

attendance. Many thanks also go

out to BSN Sports who sponsored

the showcase T-shirts.

IHSBCA computer which measured the senior players against the established criteria. These players were

Executive Director Update

The first line(s) of this update belongs to the Madison HS baseball coaching staff and Madison Consolidated School Corporation for their out-

standing job of hosting the 2019 North-South All-Star Series! Tim Armstrong and his staff put on an amazing show and fought the weather

during the whole process….they were relentless, selfless, and spared no expense to afford the players the opportunity to perform on beautiful

Gary O’Neal field. If you have not seen the Madison HS facility lately, it is a must see! Mike Modisett is constantly grooming and maintain-

ing it to a very high level and the new scoreboard, windscreens, and other amenities make it a perfect venue for a town that loves their base-

ball!

Kudos also to Kyle Schmack of South Central (Union Mills HS) who won the MVP award for the series. It was a Yankees – Red Sox offen-

sive performance that impressed everyone in the house!

We have a very important fall season coming for the IHSBCA and the IHSAA. We submit proposals and we need to address arm care, length

of season, and number of games, along with some other topics. Your district rep will be in constant contact with you about surveys that need to

be taken and support that needs to be garnered through your principal and AD. We need you to be involved now more than ever.

One of the things that I want to put on everyone’s radar, and I very much welcome your input in regards to it, is our Executive Council. Since

I took this role over in 2012, I/we have delegated many duties and your council performs a collective effort in order to handle all aspects of the

IHSBCA. I could name names, but the main point is multiple people make this work at the level that it does. We are a grass roots organiza-

tion and do all of our own work and that work is done by volunteer force(s), including: council, district reps, committee members, etc. The

one constant factor is the organization / planning and that is where I want to put something on your radar.

I would like your thoughts, as the membership, about the pros and cons of having a council that does not continually roll over every year and

remains a little more consistency. Each year we elect a new VP from a ‘quad’ and that person serves for four years and can be re-elected or

rotates off the council. We train our people to serve and have roles; sometimes that takes time, and once they are up and running, they could

be gone due to the voting process. My goal is to NOT create an exclusive group, but a leadership group that is trained, operational, and can

continue on if something would ever happen to anyone of us.

Major roles include: the state clinic, the newsletter, the certificates, our vendors, the futures games / junior showcase (which went very well

this year!), the north-south series, all the voting procedures, vison and planning for the future, IHSAA relations, and the life blood of our group

– district reps and their communications. Lots of behind the scenes work. We have excellent people! My/our goal is to continually involve

many people/new people/etc., but I feel it is time to start looking at a more consistent leadership group at the top. I need to hear from you on

this because this will be a bylaw change and we will need to have the membership vote on this change. I am looking forward to your

PLAYER SPOTLIGHT—Josh VanMeter

Josh VanMeter was called up on May

5, 2019 with the Cincinnati Reds. He

is a 2013 graduate of Norwell H.S.

where he was a 2-time all-state

player. He was drafted by the San

Diego Padres in the 5th round that

summer. After a few years working

through the Padres minor league

teams, he was traded to the Reds on December 9, 2016. Josh’s

offensive production in AAA was so tremendous in 2019 that he

was called up the big league squad on May 5, 2019. In 43 games

2019 PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Again, this year when coaches voted for the All-State teams, they also had the opportunity to select the Indiana Player of the Year. The ballot included a nominee from each of the IHSBCA districts, plus any player who was drafted.

This years award was presented at the North/South All-Star banquet. The 2019 Indiana Player of the Year was Michael Doolin who played at Andrean H.S. for Head Coach Dave Pishkur. Michael will continue his baseball career at Vanderbilt University.
