1ST QUARTER 2018-2019 VOLUME 1, ISSUE 1

Dear Families, Assalam alaikum I would like to welcome all our returning and new families who joined us for this academic year. Alhamdullah, our school enrollment has been steadily growing each year with a waiting list in some grades. This year we have a total 33 families and 54 students preschool to 3rd grade. To maintain our quality and low staff/students ratio, we added new staff members. We have a total of 15 full and part time staff members. I would like to remind myself and you with our school mission, which is men-tioned on the top of the page. The mission guides our interactions, operation and decision making. As part of continuous growth and improvement, we implemented a new system for grading and attendance called Grade-link. Students’ quarterly report cards can be viewed online and you can keep track via the phone App. We started new Gymnastics after school club on Fridays where students learn how coordinate their movements, follow directions and strengthen their muscles. Lego club has started on Mondays and will continue for 12 weeks. It helps students with team work, creativity and scientific thinking. We also launched our IHA students’ council with third grade students and they are excited about taking some leadership roles and helping the school grow. We always appreciate your feedback and help. Our bake sales so far were successful and provided the school with good financial revenue. If you can help any Friday with cooking, donating money or selling, please let us know. All About Ms. Mari’s Preschool and Pre-Kinder

Cosmic Kids Yoga stories on YouTube are a huge hit! I even moved the tables around to make sure that everyone had room to move

and groove!

~The Pre-Kinder class

The sandbox was a donation from me to the children last year, it is a favorite of theirs,

and it offers them so many opportunities for math and science, even sensory if I let them

take off their shoes!

~The Pre-Kinder Class

The Preschool kids are developing their fine motor skills and social skills while working at the table. This picture was a start to trying to help them nap better. I am not a fan of taking pictures so I look a little out of sorts. I think I really needed a nap!

Our first field trip was a wet adven-ture!! It was still a really fun experi-ence and the next field trip will be in-doors!! I am so grateful to everyone who chaperoned, and I am also thankful that the kids had fun.

So far, it has been a busy two months. They have so many new skills to learn, from the calen-

dar to writing their names and coloring. There are new songs to learn, procedures and strate-

gies and how to solve their own problems. They have especially enjoyed their large motor time,

both inside and outside. Thanks to many donations, we are slowly building our collection of toys

to allow all of the children to continue to grow and learn.

Assalamu Alaikum, I am so blessed to be your child first Quran teacher. From the beginning of the year I worked so hard to implement the class room rules and help the children learn how to sit and listen to the teacher and Alhamdulliah the kids are doing a wonderful job following directions Ma-shaa-Allah. We learned three surahs so far Al-Fatihah, An-Nas, and Al-Falaq. In Arabic we learned six letters with at least five vocabularies for each letter. Kids now can recognize their names and the beginning sound in it. We are almost done with the colors some kids memorized the four seasons and the Islamic months and all of them can count till ten in Arabic. In Islamic studies we learned the duaas to say before and after food and the duaa to say before and after using the bathroom. We still we have a lot more to learn. My goal is to teach them the love of Allah and his book and the importance of having good manners.

Ms. Hanan’s Quran Blossom This is my third year in teaching the 4 year old Blossoms. I ALWAYS thank Allah SWT and I wish to thank our principal, Ms Lama, for helping me get my CDA. Arabic: Students are learning new alphabets every week with couple of vocabularies that begin with that alphabet. I use different methods to teach each letter, such as, pictured stories, songs, and games to enrich their learning of vocabulary as well. Quran: Students finished 4 Surahs: Alfatiha – Annass – Al falaq –Al Ikhlas. Islamic Studies: We teach Hadiths and Dua’a by acting them in our classroom and students always like we make a play about the hadith or Dua’a. I am always so happy when parents tell me how the children apply what they have learned in school in their daily lives. For example, one father told me his children say the Dua for leaving the house and entering the house everyday and even when they go from room to room. Another parent told me her daughter went to her father’s work place and saw a woman eating and she told her ‘hey you must say the dua first’. One of my students loves to act play so her parents bought her a doll to pretend teaching her Arabic and Quran.

Arabic for (KG): Students learned the shapes of each letter, how to connect letters to form a word and how words make a sentence. They learned naughty letters who don’t connect with letters after them. They learned the three short Arabic vowels al Harakat: َ ِ ُ fatha , damah kasrah, Arabic for (1st) grade: Students learned the following units in I love Arabic 1 book series. My name, my family, in the bathroom. They learned the following vocabularies of in Arabic: Greeting, the family names, the names of things at houses, rooms, tools, the names of our bodies’ parts, how to use the present verbs for feminine and masculine. Arabic for 2nd Grade Students learned more about greeting and present tense verbs for feminine and masculine Arabic for 3

rd Grade Students learned more about the four seasons, the days of the week and

time with more grammars. Islamic studies for (KG): As you know last year our Students learned Islamic Studies in Arabic language, this year they started learning it in English, they focused on Aqeedah and Tawheed( there is no God but ALLAH , they started using new vocabularies : religion – creator- prophets

Islamic studies for (1

st) grade: Students learned that Allah SWT is our Creator and we love

him and he loves us, we believe that he is the only God we worship him, he had 99 names they mostly knew their meaning Islamic studies for (2

nd & 3

rd) grade: Students learned all about Aqeedah, that we have to

obey and return always to Allah swt, they learned to be good believers. We have to believe in the 6 pillars of Faith which are the roots of the tree, while the branches of the tree are the 5 pillars of Islam.

Ms. Mona’s Quran Blossom

Dear Parents,

السالم عليكم و رحمة هللا و بركاته

Quran: We studied Adiyat, Azalzalh, Al Bayyinah with

Islamic Studies: We studied the following Hadiths and

Duaas:

Hadith of learning Quran benefits.

Morning and evening duaas

Wearing clothes duaa

Hadith of asking Allah SWT to enter Jannah

Hadith bir Alwalideen or being good to parents.

Arabic: We studied sounds and different shapes of these letters Alif and Hamza, Ba, Ta, Tha, Noon and Yaa in addition to matching vocabularies.

KG: We studied the following surahs Ghashiah, Atariq, Al-Aala memorizing, learning the ayat

meanings and life lessons from the whole surah. I would love students connect with the words

of Allah SWT.

We are doing lesson 9 in Nourania which focuses on Tanween and long vowels.

directly from the Quran. Muddathir, Maarij, Nuh, Fajr, Ghashiah, Aala and lesson 9 in Nourania.

We go over meanings of Ayat and life lessons that impact our life.

memorization. Most of students are already reading from Quran and know how memorize on

their own.

Ms. Wafaa’s Kindergarten Classroom

Hoot! Hoot! Our room is buzzing with learning! Kindergarteners are learning to read and write

and they are enjoying it! They are working on reading to self, reading to their friends EEKK style,

working on writing, and working with words while increasing their Stamina . We are continuing to

focus on the three expectations: Being responsible, being respectful, and being safe. . We are

all about reading. We read many books but among our favorites are: Aliens love Underpants,

Aliens love Dinopants, and Pirates love Underpants.

Curriculum Updates:

Reading, we are focusing on comprehension strategies like key details, visualizing, and asking

and answering questions. For Genre, we are focusing on nonfiction/ informational text. In lan-

guage Arts we are focusing on segmentation, blending, and isolation of phonemes. Please make

sure that you review with them their sight words as you continue to read with them every night.

Sight words are essential for reading success and for building fluency later.

Math, Kindergarteners are working on counting numbers, teen numbers, estimating, reading and

writing numbers, representing and comparing numbers, recognizing patterns, exploring 2 and 3

dimensional shapes. Please make sure that you do the home link activities with your child. Our

goal is to make them recognize that math is everywhere around us and to make them relate to it in

their everyday life.

Please make sure you read the weekly newsletters and to complete at home activities with

your child. Also remember to read with your child every night( 15-20 minutes) to strengthen their

reading skills and enrich their vocabulary. Sight words are essential for children’s learning so

don’t forget to review them with your child every night even over the weekends.

• Scholastic Book fair- A warm and a sincere thanks for parents who donated books to our classroom( Jude Alnahass family and Omar Al Kharat). • Bake Sale- Thanks for parents who make this event successful! • Open House- Thanks for all the parents who showed up for our open house!

Ms. Sherry’s

1st Grade Classroom I can't believe it is the end of the first nine weeks! This year is already flying by. The students have done a great job of learning the routines and expectations of our classroom.

In reading, we have spent the first nine weeks working mainly on key details. In a fiction story, stu-dents have learned that key details are the important events that happen in the story. In a nonfic-tion book, students have learned that key details are the facts that the author wants you to learn.

Our first unit in reading focused all on us. We learned about school, where we live, pets, friends, and our bodies. Each week, science and social studies go along with the topic we are learning about.

In math this year, we have already worked on place value, comparing numbers, addition, and sub-traction. These are all skills that we will build on through the year. This is the foundation of math. One thing we are working on this year is addition and subtraction fluency. Each day, stu-dents are given a one-minute time test where they are to complete 20 problems correctly at a giv-en level. All students started at plus one and once they passed that, they moved to plus 2. Each time a student correctly answers all 20, they move to the next level. Please practice these facts at home with your child.

Ms. Pam’s

2nd Grade Classroom

Wow can you believe it’s been nine weeks! We are already 1 quarter of the school year down! We have been very busy! We have completed two Math Units and we’re on our 3rd. We are working on fact

fluency in addition and subtraction. We have completed 8 weeks in reading which is over 120 spelling words and 64 vocabulary words and that includes 16 stories! Writing is as easy as eating a big juicy cheeseburger! We are drafting, editing, revising and publishing our work. We are learn-ing to print neatly. We are learning to be scientists.

Social Studies is teaching us about our past and our future! We enjoyed our visit to the Science and Industry in Chicago. Second grade is awesome and we have remarkable students who are always eager to learn. I am a very proud 2nd grade teacher! Keep up the good work both students and parents. It takes all of us to make this work! Indiana Horizon is a great school with an awe-some staff! Feel comfort in knowing your children are in good hands.

IHA Third Grade Student Council Our mission statement:

The goal of the Indiana Horizon Academy student council is to

promote pride, spirit, service, and achievement in our school and community.

We are excited to introduce the first Indiana Horizon Academy student council. We have

many great ideas and we are excited to share them with you.

First, we are developing a program, so we can recycle our

paper and plastics here at IHA. Next, we hope to begin

some charitable work. On our student council list of ideas

are a food drive, coat drive, and a hat and mitten drive.

Our student council will also be actively participating in our

school’s Friday bake sale. We will be helping by baking

brownies and cookies for the sale. Finally, we are exploring

ideas for after school programs such as soccer, art class,

and cooking class.

We look forward to an exciting school year.

Best Wishes,

Abdullah, Hashim, Nour, Rayan, and Sidra

This year is certainly going by fast! We are having a great time in 3

rd grade. Everyone is so excited to

learn new things.

We have been working on reading fluency and in math we are working on measurement. Science is probably our class favorite; we are learning all about earth science. In social studies, we are learning about our State of Indiana and U.S. geography. Our class has also started a student council. We had a great time visiting the Museum of Science & Industry on October 25. We are looking forward to all the upcoming events that are planned for the school year!
