T h e L o u i s v i l l e - D e M o l a y Commandery No. 12, Knights Templar congratulates Noble J.B. Hitt, Jr. who continues as Grand Treasurer of the Grand

Commandery. Sir Knight Bobby Crittendon advanced to Grand Commander. Sir Knight Ray Swanson was elected Grand Captain General. It is announced that the annual dues for Commandery No. 12 will be only $38.00 for 2012-2013.

cont. from pg.1

The Saturday before was also a great day for a parade at Lebanon after the Ceremonial where Kosair gained 37 new Nobles. A special thanks to everyone who made it happen, especially the Palmer family--Noble Casey, Andrea, Lexie, and Silas. Thanks to the Oriental Band, the Director’s Staff, Mark Twain Shrine Club, Dale Hollow Shrine Club, Glasgow Shrine Club, Riasok Shrine Club, and the Lodge at Lebanon, also the Kosair Cast and Crew and the Motor Corps. Thanks to Jim Eaton for taking pictures, Art Davis for bringing the Emergency Relief Coach, Don Ward for hauling the rotating Fez down--what would a parade be without that? And Don deserves a special thanks for his hard work as Parade Chairman this year.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Blondie for getting up early,

going with me to events, helping me remember all the details, and helping me make Kosair look good. Boy, do I need a lot of help! I apologize if I forgot to thank somebody. It takes a large team to put on this event--thank you all.

The last Ceremonial is Nov. 17th. Working together we can make this the best one yet.

The Holidays are coming up. Check the Kolums and the web site for special events. On Dec. 7th the Ladies of Liberty will be here for a repeat performance, a very special night. Don’t forget the Shocker’s Ball on Nov. 24th. Make reservations now for New Year’s Eve dinner and dance with the Monarchs.

Thanks for all your help. Be safe. Big Dave

The Commandery will join with Bullitt Chapter and Council and the Chapers and Councils of Louisville to hold a special $100 fee festival in February of 2013. The Chapter and Council degrees are expected to be held on Saturday, February 2 beginning at 8:00 AM.

Please contact G. Michael Miller,

Sr., P.C., P.G.C., KCT, Recorder at [email protected] for more information about becoming a Knight Templar.

The LADIES FOR LIBERTY will be performing their Patriotic program. There is no cost for the meal. Please call the Scottish Rite office 584-6185 and make reservations for you and your group.

Motor CorpsTime to kick out another month of what’s been happening. So here goes...as I write this article the leaves are beginning to turn and fall off the trees. So I guess that means it is getting time for old man winter to pay us a visit. As I reflect back over this last year

I realize that I only rode my Harley 4 times. I guess that’s pretty good? Do you think there i s anybody w h o r o d e more? I think p o s s i b l y Nob le Phi l S m a l l w o o d and his wife J e a n n i n e have racked

up more air miles than anyone else. Seems like they travel to Florida every other week...it will be a sad day when they fly down and don’t come back... of course with Noble Bill Miller already down there, they could start a southern chapter. I think most of the rich Motor Corps members vacation down there too.

On the health watch Noble Leo Kirkpatrick is in rehab for a broken hip. Seems he was chasing after a lady friend and fell...any way that’s how I heard it. The

received the degrees in 2012 and their wives and all of the members who participated in putting on the degrees.

The Temple will be closed for Thanksgiving.

On Thursday December 13th, 2012 there will be a stated meeting. Also the Scottish Rite Guard will have their annual meeting and election of officers at 6:30p.m... The Guard Dinner will be held on Saturday December 15th.

The Temple will be closed Christmas week.

On Tuesday, January 1st, 2013 Louisville Scottish Rite will hold their NEW YEARS DAY reception 12 NOON to 3:00 p.m. Make plans to attend, meet old friends and make new ones. Don’t forget to pick up your souvenir glass.

Motor corps wishes him a speedy recovery.

On a sad note the Motor Corps offers its heartfelt sympathy to our Noble John Kuzuoka and his wife Gina on the Passing of her beloved Father Donald Joseph Lish, Sr..

The Motor Corps welcomes our newest member Gary Wilson. He joined the Unit this last month. So Gary, Welcome Aboard.

I would be remiss if I didn’t shout out to Noble Charlie Gardner and Noble Bud Garrison who tirelessly work on the road blocks.

Noble Paul Pfiefer won this month’s half and half. and finally some Truths for Mature Humans:I think part of a best friend’s job should be to immediately clear your computer history if you die.

I disagree with Kay Jewelers. I would bet on any given Friday or Saturday night more kisses begin with Miller Lite than with Kay.

I love the sense of camaraderie when an entire line of cars team up to prevent a jerk from cutting in at the front. Stay strong, brothers and sisters!

The first testicular guard, the “Cup,” was used in ice hockey in 1874 and the first helmet used in 1974. That means it only took 100 years for men to realize that their brain is also important.

Street Machines

We held our annual Street Machines picnic at the home of Noble Marshall Geoghegan and Lady Janice. The attendees enjoyed a selection of barbeque and deserts that were wonderful. The weather was perfect. We sat around and enjoyed conversation and fellowship with each other. The picnic was attended by Illustrious Potentate David Juergens and Lady Clara, Dodie and Karney Thomas, Billie and Bill Foster, Dorothy and Hubert Huffman, Maxine and Randy Skinner, Adah and Bill Smith, Candy and Ed Embry and of course Janice and Marshall Geoghegan.

Our December Drive and Dine will be on December 15 at 7:00 pm at The Corner Cafe in Lyndon. Reservations are a must for this one.

I will report on our first Fall Car show in Leitchfield that was held on October 13 at M and D’s Marina on Rough River Lake. We hope that the weather was kind to us.

The Kosair Street Machines unit is open to any Noble who has a street legal vehicle that wants to share in discussion about Hot Rods and collector vehicles. We meet on the last Monday of the month at Kosair Temple after the Unit Director meetings. That usually is around 7:30 pm. Come by if you are interested. You will enjoy the fellowship.

FunstersHello out there in Shriner land. I hope all are doing well with you fellow Shriners and your ladies.

First of all, let’s keep our fellow Shriners and their ladies who are sick, in the hospital, recovering from an operation, are there at home and can’t out in your prayers for a speedy recovery. And let’s not forget the children in the hospital getting the right medication and care so that they make a speedy recovery also. Because if I’m not mistaken, that’s why what we do and that’s for the “KIDS”.

There has been so many activities going on in the Klown world for the Funsters, we are having to turn down requests because a lot of them are on the same day. And remember, if need a Funster for one of your activities, the request must be in no later than 30 days prior to you activity. The request form is on the Kosair Funsters, in the Kosair Shriners web page.

Well! If you didn’t attend the SASA convention in Myrtle Beach SC., then you missed a nice showing of friendship and brotherhood. The parade was simply awesome. The competition was fierce and exciting but the Funsters prevailed again by bringing home two trophies. I’m just wondering if there is any way possible for us to get a new room because of all the trophies the Funsters are bringing home? It’s only a thought.

The parade in Jeffersontown was quite good and I heard there was a nice turnout of our fellow brothers. Way to go. Keep up the good work.

The Ceremonial that was held in Lebanon on “ham day,” along with a parade was nice also. That was a nice turnout there also. I can’t remember how many new novices that joined, but I heard that there was quite a few. Keep up the good work in getting new ones in to join the Kosair Shriner Temple.

So! My fellow Shriners and brothers, (No I’m not running for any office) If any of the new Novices are interested in joining the Funsters, please feel free to come to one of our meetings which is held on the last Monday of the month in the basement following the Unit Director’s meeting at 7:30 pm or pretty close to that. If you can’t juggle or do tricks, there are enough brothers to assist you on those kind of things. We will show you how to apply your face paint and dress. If you want to become a member of one of the most recognize units in the temple, and want to joined the circus you need to apply no later than our next meeting which will be October 29th. At the circus there are many long hours, but the smiles make

it so much easier to endure the long hours.

This is starting, to get to our really busy time of the year. Parades, Christmas shopping for the kids, wrapping the presents, hospital visits to distribute all the toys to the kids in the hospital, Shriner Christmas party, Kosair Charities Christmas party, and several other events. Then after the Christmas rush is over, then you’ll have a break for about 30 days till the circus.

Don’t forget the car raffle on November 9th at 7:30pm at the Crown Plaza hotel, which Bob Beatty has held for the last 4 years which brings in money for transplants for the kids.

So! Hope to see some of the novices at one of our meetings to see what we are all about and what we do. I guess I’ve taken up enough of your time, but I’ve to go and do some entertaining. Have a good day and let’s keep the kids smiling.

WUSHTAN, Afghanistan - During a halt in a security patrol here May 18, Lance Cpl. Dylan R. Barth, a native on New Albany, Ind., sat down next to Muhammed Hasim, one of his counterparts with the Afghan National Army, and struck up a conversation.

Though Barth is not fluent in the Dari language, he knew enough to be able to make jokes with Hasim.

S o o n , t h e Marine and soldier were l a u g h i n g t o g e t h e r , and a crowd o f A f g h a n c h i l d r e n gathered to see what was g o i n g o n . Hasim and the other Afghan

soldiers handed out food and candy to the children while others soldiers and Marines spoke with adults of the village.

Barth is a team leader serving with Animal Company, 1st Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment. He acts as an advisor and liaison to Afghan forces serving alongside Marines.

During Operation Sangin United Horizons, Marines and ANA forces entered the town of Wushtan to investigate insurgent activity. Terrorists operating throughout the region were known to use Wushtan as a staging point for attacks in Sangin, Kajaki, and Musa Qa’leh.

Marine patrols were accompanied by detachments of ANA soldiers, searching for insurgents, weapons caches and hidden stockpiles of narcotics. When a compound needed to be searched or a local civilian needed to be spoken to, Barth and the ANA would take the lead.

“The ANA assisted us in moving in and establishing a baseline,” said Capt. Peter Ankney, commanding officer of Baker Company. “Their ability to get in there and talk to people and get things done brought us to a different level than we could have done without them.

The Afghan soldiers have patrolled Wushtan before, so they were familiar with the area. That familiarity helped patrols move smoothly and efficiently.

Barth always makes sure to keep a positive attitude and be approachable to the Afghans during patrols.

“Whenever the civilians see me joking around and talking with the ANA they will be more willing to come and talk to me,” he said.

Barth said having a good relationship with the local population helps Marines and ANA gather information and limits the ability of the insurgency to operate in the area.

A large part of bonding with the civilian population comes from interacting with the children.

“We want the people to like us,” Barth said. ”If the kids all like it when the Marines come around, the adults will see that. They will see us give them candy and have fun with them and show them we are good people.”

The ANA have learned from the example set by Marines, and also make an extra effort to connect with the civilian population.

Barth and the ANA he patrols with frequently come across groups of curious children. During one patrol, Hasim opened a bag of rations and began handing out the food and candy inside to a group of laughing children. Even after all the food was gone, the crowd of children remained, asking questions and playing games with the Afghan soldiers.

Barth said it isn’t hard for him to connect with the people of Afghanistan.

“The people are very hospitable to us,” he said. “Anything they have, they offer to share with you. Even when they really don’t know you they will offer to bring you in and give you things. That’s just their culture and that’s who they are.”

As the operation ended and the Marines and ANA left the town, Mohammed Ikhahlas, a local farmer, offered to let the tired troops rest in his compound. He said the ANA and Marines help the people of Afghanistan, and he wanted to return the favor.

Barth said his most meaningful connection has been with his brothers in arms of the ANA he serves alongside each day.

Brother Dylan Robert Barth is the son of Noble Steve Barth of Kosair Shriners. Dylan became a Mason on his eighteen birthday and is now a Master Mason of New Albany Lodge.

Nomads

OK, for all of us that are new to the Shrine....

To all New Nobles aka Nomads ..... there is a meeting on November 16th at 7 pm or right after the Friday night dinner ($10 each for a great meal). We are still trying to get all the new members to meet and see if we could get this new club started. Hey

guys ... it’s for our benefit... it is to help all newbies (NOMADS) become familiar with the goings on within the Shrine...help us find our way and understand what the Shrine is and what can done to better ourselves as Masons and within this great organization.

We are trying to do this because, how many times have you joined something and felt like you were lost in high weeds and finally just gave up or just stood back and let it just roll on without you!

So please, if you can just stop by on the 16th around 7 pm and see what we are all about... and what we can do for you & each other.......

Hope to see you then; fraternally yoursKenny [email protected]

Ceremonial Director’s StaffThe Ceremonial Director’s Staff are known to be a fun loving and fun providing unit of our temple. The Nobles are also hard workers on behalf of Kosair Shriners, support our Kosair Charities and help our Shrine hospitals.

Each year many of the Nobles provide hot breakfasts for the participants of the Harvest Homecoming Parade held in New Albany. Photos are with this article. Are you in one of the photos? Next year you can be if now you are not. We had some who worked but missed the photos; Jim Szofer was one (Roger Dabney is shown in photos, Ed.).

A new friend of Kosair has been made in Scott Spencer. Scott is the new manager of the Family Dollar store on Vincennes Street in New Albany. He is continuing the twenty year tradition of allowing our Unit to set up of our cooking area in the store parking lot. Thank you, Scott! Please remind to keep Scott and his store in mind for your shopping needs.

Sunshriners

Kosair Sunshiners go to the Masonic Home in Shelbyville this month to visit all Veterans and Masons.

Dale LeMond and John Wesley took control of putting on a nice video presentation of our various Veteran projects we were involved in this past year to a crowded room of Veterans and Masons at the Masonic Home in Shelbyville, Ky. Walt Oster was unable to attend because of his broken foot and is home bound in a cast. The residents were very receptive and were glad to see that Shriners and men of Military care about them. We assured them that they will never be forgotten and we shall return in the near future.

Nobles please take a minute of you time and go visit some of our brothers that are now residents of the Masonic Homes that we all support and care about. The reward will be yours.

I challenge other units and clubs to get a group together and visit the New Sam Swope Center and the Masonic Homes both in Louisville and Shelbyville, Ky..

Ladies Oriental ClubBy Jo Barrett

At the October meeting we had the pleasure of hearing, from one of our own, Martha O’Bryan, a world traveler, who told us about the many places she has travelled and the sights and scenery she has seen. It was a happy evening filled with colorful events from her trips around the world. Have suitcase – will travel.

The Annual Style Show “Autumn Fashions in the Ville” has come and gone and everyone had a great time watching the models go

down the runway and expressed their pleasure at the clothes that were presented. Have Shopping Bag – will shop!

Pam Wilson and all Ladies Oriental Club members are busy selling tickets for the Gift Card Basket, the basket has over a $1,000 worth of gift cards and even has a beautiful necklace and earring set, so hurry and buy your tickets, the basket will be given away at the November meeting. Don’t need money to shop or eat

if you win this basket! The Kosair Charities Campaign is winding down, this is the final month, so don’t forget to send your money to Paula Eaton. It will help our Kosair Kids!

Our “White Thumb” night is fast approaching, Ladies Oriental Club’s cake night, it is November 16th, so put on your “white thumb” and make some delicious desserts for the evening. Yum Yum!

Our annual “Christmas Party” will be held at the Oxmoor Country on December 13th, make your reservations, at the November meeting, we will again be having the $15 exchange gift, as well as sharing clothing items for Kosair Children’s Hospital, a festive night is planned. Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells – Christmas is coming!

The Ladies Oriental Club enjoys wonderful speakers and dinner each month and raises money for Kosair Charities. We look forward to seeing each of you at our meetings. Fun and more Fun!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Give “Thanks” and

remember to have an

Attitude of Gratitude!

Transportation UnitBy Roger Hines, Secretary

At the time of this writing we still have a few of our members or their family who are recovering from injuries or illnesses. Larry Cox, who suffered a serious stroke in June and underwent open heart surgery in July, is now home recuperating after being released by Frazier Rehab; per his wife Nevada he is showing improvement every day. Bobby Clark suffered a broken collar bone and other lesser injuries from a off-road accident and is doing well, but since he’s a fire fighter cannot work until he heals. Bobby’s daughter, who was in a very serious automobile accident, is now home from the hospital but has to use a walker for the time being; she is healing very well and ahead of schedule in her recovery. Estil Wilkerson reports his wife is doing well with her radiation treatments. And lastly, the writer, who is experiencing a bad case of double vision that is temporarily being corrected by a plastic paste-on prism lens; I should have the permanent lens very shortly and be able to take Transportation trips once again.

I’m starting to compare my body to a danged old 1936 Ford. First the

transmission goes out so you fix that, then the engine needs a overhaul so you do that, then the brakes need to be replaces, after repairing the brakes the clutch goes out, and on and on and on. You finally get the thing up and running and you discover it need tires. You get the tires and it running so good you decide to see how fast she’ll go and you wind-up totaling the thing. That the way my body is of late, I get one thing fixed and something else pops up that needs work. I believe all you older Nobles can relate to this.

As to trips the Unit has been kept busy by children and their families needing transportation. During the time span between August 15th and September 18th we made 22 trips and drove 5919 miles for an average of 269 miles per trip. The longest of these being 515 miles and the shortest being 40. We made 5 trips to the Lexington, Ky. Shrine Hospital, 11 to the Cincinnati, Ohio Shrine Hospital and 6 trips to other medical facilities.

Until next month, Roger Hines, Unit Secretary

Members of the Kosair Charities 1000 Club recognize that treating children sometimes requires a multi-year commitment. Annual donations to Kosair Charities secure funding for pediatric-related programs and individual nancial support, so that no child’s medical need is left untreated. Donors who have pledged to provide Kosair Charities a minimum of $100 each year for 10 years are recognized as members of the 1000 Club.

MeMory Bricks

The Kosair Shrine Center Memory Bricks are available and may be purchased for yourself in honor or memory of an individual loved one or ones, a family member, a Lodge, a Unit or a Club. What better way to honor the living or the memory of deceased loved ones than with a memory brick? These bricks are being placed around the “Silent Messenger” statue erected at the Second Street Corner of Kosair

Shrine Center.

These bricks make a unique gift for any occasion. What a wonderful gift for that person who has everything and is so hard to buy for! What a meaningful way to honor any loved one! You can view some of the bricks that have already been placed around the statue by going to the Kosair Shrine Temple site http://www.kosair.com and then clicking on the navigation button on the left that is labeled “Kosair

Shrine Memory Bricks.”

For more information contact the Recorder’s Office on 502-585-5412 or visit our Memory Bricks webpage http://www.kosair.

September 20, 2012

Dear Fellow Nobles:

At the Annual Meeting of 2009, a very historic vote took place….Our membership authorized Shriners Hospitals for Children to move forward with a Revenue Cycle Initiative. That collective decision ensured that children in need…will continue to receive Shriners specialized care for many more years. And please be assured that this initiative is not changing Shriner’s commitment and mission at all.

Shriners Hospitals now have contracts with many insurance companies and state healthcare programs. This is requiring us to comply with numerous laws and regulations. As a result, we must be very careful that we no longer promote Shriners Hospitals as providing “free care.”

That phrase “free care” or “care without cost” does not really accurately reflect the significant contributions made that are made every day by our Fraternity and by our generous Donors that support the expert care we provide. It is truly “more accurate” to say… that Shriners Hospitals provide the highest quality medical care to children “regardless of the patient’s or family’s ability to pay.” We all need to encourage our Nobles to utilize this newer phrase, which is also a part of our mission statement. Unfortunately, those phrases such as “free care” and “care at no cost” are red flags to our insurance providers and the regulatory agencies. They reflect practices that contradict our Shriner’s “contractual obligations” with the insurers.

It therefore becomes very important for all of us to promptly review our documents, our newsletters and our other publications at your Shrine Center

and change those that contain these statements. We will also need to eliminate these phrases from our web-sites.

In addition, these phrases that are on our Shrine Center vans, parade vehicles, and anywhere they might be displayed in our buildings, should also be removed. It will serve our philanthropy much better to use this newer phrase from our “Mission statement”, “Regardless of our patient’s or family’s ability to pay.” So that we have no further “awkward discussions” with the insurance providers or regulators, all of the members of your National Boards, hope that you will be able to make these changes at your facility, as quickly as possible

This action on your part is extremely crucial to the continuing success of our Revenue Cycle program. Once we are past this issue, our historical action of 2009 will help Shriners International sustain our charitable mission well into the future. Each of us appreciate all that you do on a daily basis to support our fraternity and our hospitals.

Please help us spread the word to all of our nobles and their ladies, that our new Shriners’ Slogan is….“All care at Shriners Hospitals for Children is provided without regard to a patient or family’s ability to pay”.
