Message from the Rabbis and Cantor

L’shanah Tovah.

The Psalmist was honest about life and death: “The days of a human being are like grass. We flourish like a flower in the field, then a wind passes over and we are gone. No one can even see the place where we were any longer.”

At the core of our High Holy Days is this awesome truth. Our time here is limited, and we are gone, all of us, too soon.

Rosh Hashanah is a beginning; the entire world is created on this day. Yom Kippur is a day to think about the many endings in our lives, even our own mortality. And we find ourselves, once again, on a very narrow bridge in between – between beginnings and endings, between life and death, between “this is the day the world is created anew,” and “repent one day before your death.”

We do not walk that bridge alone. We gather together to feel the presence of so many who touch our hearts. And we bring with us into the sanctuary many others who exist now only in our memories, but whose presence we feel strongly. Their names are here, as if we could forget them. Seeing them in print keeps the memories strong.

We need these pages like we need one another – to lift us up, and to accompany us through these Days of Awe.

May the memories of our loved ones live on for blessing and may we find comfort as we remember them.

THE KADDISH The origin of the Kaddish prayer is mysterious; angels are said to have brought it down from heaven and taught it to men and women. The tenderest threads of human recollection are entwined about this prayer; for it is the prayer of the orphans! When the father or mother dies, children recite Kaddish through the year of mourning, and then on each anniversary of the death, the Yahrzeit.

Kaddish possesses wonderful power. If there is a bond strong and enduring enough to chain heaven to earth, it is this prayer. It keeps the living together, and forms a bridge to the world to come. One could say that this prayer is a guardian of the people by whom alone it is uttered; and that therein lies their guarantee of continuance. Can a people disappear so long as its children remember their parents? It may sound strange: in the midst of dissipation this prayer has recalled the dissolute to their better selves, to reflect and purify themselves at least for a time, by honoring the memory of their parents.

Kaddish affirms the spirit of the perishable in man. Because it does not acknowledge death, because it permits the blossom which has fallen from the tree of mankind to flower and develop again in the human heart, it possesses sanctifying power.

“To know that when thou diest, the earth falling on thy head will not cover thee entirely; to know that there remain behind those who, wherever they may be on this wide earth, whether they be poor or rich, will send this prayer after thee; to know that thou leavest them no house, no estate, no field by which they must remember thee, and that yet they will cherish thy memory as their dearest inheritance - what more satisfying knowledge canst thou ever hope for?”

Such is the knowledge bequeathed to us by the Kaddish.
