Marian University at a Glance

The question is, where are you going?

This is Marian University: a distinctively Catholic university in the Franciscan tradition. We’re preparing our students to be tomorrow’s leaders in health care, business, education, ministry, and public service. We will teach you how to think, how to communicate, and how to apply the values you acquire here to become the type of leader that today’s marketplace demands. If you only want a degree, look elsewhere. If you want to change the world, let us teach you how.

this is where it starts. Here we go.

Marian University is part of an 800-year-old tradition—the Franciscan intellectual tradition. Every student and their family becomes a part of that ethos. Every faculty and staff member is committed to furthering that legacy. It is also what makes Marian University distinctive. There are more than 3,600 colleges and universities in America.Out of those, 23 are Franciscan. One of them is Marian University.

A picturesque, wooded campus. In one of America’s most vibrant, livable cities. Marian University sits just minutes from the heart of downtown Indianapolis and several cultural districts, including Broad Ripple, Fountain Square, and Mass Ave, and they are all connected by expanding bike trails.

And though Indianapolis used to be called “Naptown,” there’s nothing sleepy about it anymore. It’s an amazing blend of cosmopolitan culture and Midwestern charm—with nationally recognized restaurants, a vibrant art and music scene, and big-time professional and college sports. Indianapolis is a very happening place to be—and we can help you make it your place.

Parisian Renaud Sicard considered three major factors in choosing to attend Marian University: the reputation of the Clark H. Byrum School of Business, the soccer program, and campus size. “Marian University makes it easy to quickly feel a part of the community, make friends, and get help when you need it. Class sizes are small, so professors always have time for you if you need help.”

“What influenced me the most at Marian University, especially as a foreign citizen, was the network of people. I have had the chance to meet great people who have guided me, believed in me, and motivated me to work toward my goals. It is great to learn skills for a class, but even better to be inspired.”

Renaud Sicard is now working for ExactTarget in downtown Indianapolis. He is participating in ExactTarget’s entry-level Catapult Program. Catapult allows employees to discover where they fit within the ExactTarget Marketing Cloud, while gaining cross-functional experience within this growing organization. Sicard will follow Catapult’s business track focusing on marketing and management and feels well-prepared him to begin his career in marketing. “With my determination and the education Marian University has provided, I feel confident that I will achieve success in all my future endeavors.”

It’s not just about learning a skill. It’s about learning to be an interesting, interested, engaged citizen of the world.

It’s not just about sitting in classrooms. It’s about internships that give you practical, hands-on experiences at some of America’s most progressive companies. And maybe about studying Spanish in Spain.

It’s not just about educating your mind. It’s about your body and your spirit—the whole you—too.

It’s about broad experience to make you a well-rounded person. And deep experience in what you love the most.

it’s about discovering who you are. and who you’re going to become.

One of the many study abroad opportunities Marian University offers is a 10-day business course, Contemporary European Business Issues, at Harlaxton College in Grantham, England. The grounds include a 100-room Victorian manor house built in the 1830’s which features a great hall, a conservatory, and many other beautiful architectural features.

the importance of Faith

Marian University’s identity as a Catholic and Franciscan institution is grounded in Jesus Christ. Our faith is ever present and visible in the fabric of the educational philosophy and operation of the university. It guides the way faculty, administration, staff, and students relate to one another and how visitors are welcomed to campus. Our Catholic and Franciscan identity guides what courses are offered, and the mode and purpose of the teaching and learning that occurs in the classroom. It guides the activities and tone of campus life, and most importantly, guides the university’s journey into a remarkable future.

Last year, more than 100 Marian University students gave over 1,500 hours in STARR (Students Taking Active Reflective Roles), a program that provides students opportunities for hands-on service, personal and spiritual growth, and building relationships, both among fellow students and within the greater Indianapolis community.

Thirteen Marian University students and two faculty members were in the process of planning a trip to Haiti when a devastating earthquake struck early in 2010. Alyssa Simpson was one member of that Haitian relief corps. She recalled, “The trip involved helping the people in Haiti physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually.” The experience prepared her—as it had prepared other students before her—for the rigors of difficult cases and challenging commitments. Today, Simpson is an RN at Hendricks Regional Health in Danville, Indiana.

“There are a lot of good schools out there. What sets Marian University apart from other schools and universities are the passionate professors, the community of students who are courageously pursuing their own dreams, and the overall atmosphere of wanting to truly change the world. How could anyone not thrive under those circumstances?”
