Welcome Welcome to the 2015 Indianapolis Sport Facility Symposium. This exciting WKU Study-Away course is designed to give students an understanding of the facility planning, design, and construction process for recreation and sport facilities. This course will include exposure to some the most outstanding facilities and professionals in the country. This cutting edge experience will provide a tremendous learning experience that will enhance student resumes.

Course Description

Facility development process with emphasis on the unique features of different types of facilities. Site visits coordinated in cooperation with the International Association of Venue Managers (IAVM).

Objectives

Students should be familiar with the following concepts and content areas upon completion of the course:

• Master plan, site selection, and development phases • Planning facilities for safety and risk management • Sustainable design, construction, and building operations • Universal and accessible design • Electrical, mechanical, and energy management • Ancillary area considerations • Planning for effective graphics and signage • Indoor and outdoor surfaces • Landscape design, sports turf, and parking lots • Development of specialized recreational spaces

• Design trends in stadiums and arenas • Trends in equipment and supplies • Equipment and facility design standards

Textbook Information

2015 Indianapolis Sport Facility Symposium Course Packet (issued to students upon arrival).

Required Coursework: Students will be expected to: 1. Attend and participate in all class activities and site visits 2. Submit required Facility Profiles 3. Complete Group Projects 4. Complete Examinations 5. Represent WKU and KRS with pride and professionalism

Site Visits

Actual site visits to a variety of facilities will comprise the bulk of the coursework. For each site visit, students will need to bring the course packet, copy of the Facility Profile (for each facility), portfolio, pen, walking shoes, comfortable casual clothing (check weather and suggested attire sheet), and a camera (optional). A complete listing of venues is on the course site with corresponding web links to each.

Facility Profiles: Students are responsible for completing Facility Profiles for all facilities during the site visits and submitting the completed profiles to instructors by the specified deadlines. The Facility Profiles can be viewed and printed on the course site.

Group Project/Presentation: A culminating activity, in the form of a group project and presentation, will be assigned to students. The instructors will provide specific information and instructions on the course site and at a group meeting on the trip.

Exams: Two exams will be administered. One exam will cover coming facility terminology in the industry, while the other exam will pertain to the venues on the course/trip schedule. Both exams will be administered via Blackboard.

Graduate Student Component

Additional work will be required of the graduate students above and beyond normal course expectations as outlined in this syllabus. The instructors will meet with the graduate students on Monday, May 18th to outline the additional course activities.

Grading Scale

A 90-100% B 80-89% C 70-79% D 60-69% F Below 60%

Grade Book: The instructors reserve the right to make grade book corrections to ensure grades accurately reflect performance. Please alert instructors if you notice a mistake or discrepancy.

Academic Honesty: Facility Profiles, Exams, Projects, and Discussion Board posts must be your own work. Any work borrowed without appropriate citations or permission of the author (including other students) will result in the grade of zero and possible course failure.
